haha nan re woodpeckers on the roof - we have a type of Ibis known here as a hadeda becaucse of their loud call - they converse with their neighbours from our roof at 5am almost every day

The woodpeckers are noisiest in the spring. We had a northern flicker (I think) that kept coming back to bang on the top of a nearby light standard last year. I think maybe he never did find a mate.

Origami - my daughter is in school in Southern CA - they are all on line by March 20 - one of her classes already is.
My son is a freshman in college - they are going online Mon for 2 weeks but still having labs in person. Really. And he is in computer classes, so the easiest labs to do online they are doing in a classroom?
Our University is closed for he rest of the semester. Students, who are on break now, have to take all their property home by next weekend

Just visited Trader Joe's on a Thursday aft at 2 pm thinking (silly me) it wouldn't be busy. It felt like the End of Days in there. Shelves stripped clean. Lines like in Soviet era groceries. Carts piled to the brim. I bought some feta cheese :-)

hello. just home from an after school seminar with the principal. As of right now, all schools in our county still open. people, especially the pregnant teachers and those with little kids, were clearly vexed. All after school activities, sports and field trips are cancelled, and no community groups can use the school facilities. Im not too happy with this. in school - safe. after school - not safe. makes no sense!

it is all very upsetting. most of the kids I work with have at least one sibling in college, who have been sent home due to the colleges closing. and those students come in to school every day

Italy did not have anywhere near enough restriction, hence the country of 60 million is at a shut down right now.
a lot of people got upset when the principal said the school was remaining open because we don't have any confirmed cases yet, but are trying to prevent cases happening. I cannot see how waiting for a case to present and then shutting the school solves anything

I was in the hospital for three months at the end of 2018, and one thing that I noticed was how automatically the medical folks used the purell stuff - and there was a dispenser every few feet, it seemed. It was like "see dispenser, use dispenser" even if they'd touched nothing in the room. I imagine it's even more so now.
Hi Peri, Trif, Helen et al. I have 2 siblings who are General Practitioners. Both have seen infected patients today. Both have staff who are rightly concerned about their own, and their families health. I work in the Coroner's service & we are currently arranging a conference call for Sunday to discuss mass fatality arrangements.

I get ya, lol - but it's true we do go through an incredible amount of it here, with my disabled daughter, her fellow, and my son all under my roof with me. Part of her problem leads to frequent bathroom visits, and she's the sort of person whose habits (overuse of TP is one) are seemingly unchangeable.
Trif, in our town I've been putting up health posters, answering questions, etc, and I get asked all the time: What's up with toilet paper shortage!? It's because the CDC advised people have about an extra two weeks worth of non-perishable food and household goods and medicines, in case they need to self quarantine. Many people took that to mean getting a year's supply of toilet paper. lol!! I honestly don't know why!! We stocked up on our favorite brand of tissue, for sneezing.
Luckily, my DIL texted me early this morning to see if I could get this stuff. I called to the store before 9.00am & bought 4 packs. By 1.00 pm there wasn't a grain of it left. (Also - and I know I'll spell this wrong) diarrhoea is a symptom.
