If you know woodpeckers, that may help with the pi7.

12:38 am

only thing I know about woodpeckers is that they have an annoying habit of pecking on the metal flasihing on the roof at 5:30 am

12:39 am

I just wondered why Lickety's announcement hadn't happened. The list is there with an extra word. If anyone finds the word, please post it and I'll let him know.

12:40 am

The woodpecker I'm thinking of is apparently Canada's largest, and it will bang on anything that makes a loud noise when it's trying to find a mate.

12:41 am

pi7 - heap of something + past tense of taking in food.

12:41 am

Thanks, Jacula

12:42 am

the vi7 is the extra word on lickety

12:42 am

Thanks - I'll email him.

12:43 am

Done - when he sees the email, I'm sure he'll update the list.

Fireworks! ~*~*~*~*

12:51 am

haha nan re woodpeckers on the roof - we have a type of Ibis known here as a hadeda becaucse of their loud call - they converse with their neighbours from our roof at 5am almost every day

12:52 am

grats jacula

12:52 am

Congrats jacula

12:56 am

The woodpeckers are noisiest in the spring. We had a northern flicker (I think) that kept coming back to bang on the top of a nearby light standard last year. I think maybe he never did find a mate.

12:57 am

no wonder -- I don't think even the birds want to listen to that racket!

1:01 am

This isn't really a good are for them, I think, but I had seen a pair of them in previous years, so maybe he'd lost his mate.

1:01 am

hi, all.

1:04 am

I'm practicing solcial distancing re: that virus. Grateful for the friendly confines known as Babble (:

1:13 am

so far we have one case now that has been home quarantined for 10 days now -- nothing else so far, but a bunch of snowbirds returning soon, so no idea how long that will last

1:17 am

4 left but too tired to look for them now -- good night everyone :)

Bummer!

10:22 am

Yeah and he bought some groceries

10:24 am

He said he was gong to try to get in with a coat hanger from someone somewhere.. no idea

10:26 am

i just heard that what the world needs to do is have EVERYONE stay home for 2 weeks and the virus wont spread and will die! or maybe 3 weeks just for extra safety.

10:27 am

but who knows what the next virus will be?

10:27 am

question: is this how humanity will end? from viruses?

10:27 am

only time will tell mkg

10:28 am

interesting stuff viruses........they mutate all the time.

10:28 am

TU 6/27 clue pls and is the 5 related?

10:28 am

10:29 am

10:39 am

Hey, hurshy. Was wondering where you have been,

10:40 am

nowhere in particular, i've been around

10:41 am

mkg i think we have had those words before

10:42 am

we have, indeed

10:42 am

Hubby just called and is getting someone to help him get into his car. I don't know what that means but..

10:43 am

anyone have the left i word?

10:44 am

il6 i think?

10:44 am

il6/24 to light up

10:44 am

ahh, how poetic

10:44 am

well my plumber just came........he said he goes into houses and worries who might have this virus.......not easy

10:45 am

mkg unfortunately you have to e careful anywhere you go.

10:45 am

to light up? hmmm.

10:45 am

i keep remembering the black plague.........and my mothers stories from the 1918 flu where people were so afraid.

10:47 am

got that il 6. wow. great word.

10:47 am

ty

10:49 am

mkg, go to the CDC's webpage. They have a list of things to do that will help you understand the virus and how to prevent getting it.

10:49 am

Sounds like your husband locked himself out of his car

10:50 am

bea, if hubby goes to NIH hospital then how can i prevent it???????? he is a doctor.

10:51 am

He will have to follow protocol.

10:51 am

Good advice Bea. Understanding and ways to prevent getting the virus are better than panic inducing comments.

10:51 am

amen to that

10:51 am

Presumably he wears protective gear while treating any COVID-19 patients, then strips off and cleans prior to going home...?

10:52 am

Doctors always follow contagion protocol.

10:52 am

i've got 100 words!!

10:53 am

You may go to the head of the class. : D

10:53 am

zoooom

10:53 am

The flu epidemic of 1918 spread and killed so many people because they did not have the medicines we have today. Sanitation is better as is the understanding of germs.

10:54 am

and other equipment is better too, like ventilators

10:54 am

and if we "flatten the curve" as everyone keeps talking about then it sounds like it will be manageable

10:55 am

There was no hand sanitizers, no public access to hot water, etc

10:55 am

ok here is a funny thing that happened about the virus

10:56 am

on tuesday night my local news said the st. patrick's day parade would continue as planned next week. they never cancel. they would never consider cancelling. then last night they said, it is cancelled.

10:56 am

LOL!

10:56 am

(keeping in mind i am not actually in ireland. maybe there they really wouldn't cancel.)

10:57 am

No they did cancel in Ireland.

10:57 am

i'm sure st pat understands

10:57 am

he was a real good guy

10:57 am

The NCAA isn't allowing fans at the tournament because they don't want to get sued if someone contact the virus at an event.

10:57 am

and the NBA cancelled the rest of the season

10:58 am

Many universities are sending students home for spring break and telling them to stay there. Classes will be remote for the rest of the year. I saw a photograph of two college guys, holding up Corona beer bottles that said "No more classes this year"

10:58 am

Because they have players that tested positive for the virus.

10:59 am

the trouble is, some people look at these measures and think "oh wow, this must be really bad" when really what we need to think is "oh good, people are doing what needs to be done to prevent this from getting really bad"

10:59 am

Molly's Financial Tip of The Day: Invest in Charmin. : D

10:59 am

Exactly.

11:00 am

I agree Hursh. I could do without the massive over reaction.

11:00 am

No, invest in Gilead Sciences (makers of remdesavir) and Zoom (EVERYONE is working on Zoom now)

11:01 am

They are even homeschooling on Zoom.

11:01 am

I was joking Natasha, but you might have something there.

11:01 am

mullet is a phantom word. if only it were also a phantom hairstyle.

11:01 am

What is Zoom?

11:02 am

remote meeting app

11:02 am

next door neighbor took spare key to hubby

11:02 am

Oh, like Go To Meeting?

11:02 am

My board held its first remote meeting yesterday. Using Zoom. All the universities will be using it to conduct classes.

11:03 am

Zoom and Slack are the apps du jour

11:03 am

I do my best to stay away from meetings. They usually put me to sleep.

11:03 am

yes nba is cancelled for the rest of the season or for as long as it takes. I heard on a talk show a few days ago that quarantine can tale weeks

11:03 am

I use Zoom to tutor Hebrew to adult bnei mitzvah students.

11:04 am

did you hear how the kids somewhere in asia realized that if they all rated their homework app one star, then it would get removed from the app store for bad ratings?

11:04 am

That is the problem with Zoom... they can see you falling asleep. So yesterday one of the board members put her feet up and we briefly saw her pedicure because she'd aimed her camera wrong LOL

11:04 am

I private messaged her and she turned off the camera

11:06 am

Well, as long as it was a nice pedicure. : D

11:06 am

I volunteered this morning. Understandably, there were a lot less volunteers this month. Some one had to get that food out though.

11:06 am

That is funny Natasha.

11:06 am

Good for you Bea.

11:07 am

Someday we'll resume normal life. I hope and pray. Meanwhile it's interesting figuring out what really matters. Life stripped down to its essence...

11:07 am

Understanding that our illusions of control are just that. And when in a tizzy, there's always Babble to calm the mind.

11:09 am

tu 6/27, pls

11:09 am

my dad said in england they are paying people large amounts of money to take part in vaccine trials. 9000 people signed up for 50 slots. i hope they do one near me!!

11:20 am

It was just announced that all classes at the university where I work will be on-line beginning Monday. No face-to-face classes until the end of the school year.

11:20 am

Very descriptive methinks.

11:41 am

11:50 am

Origami - my daughter is in school in Southern CA - they are all on line by March 20 - one of her classes already is.

11:59 am

My son is a freshman in college - they are going online Mon for 2 weeks but still having labs in person. Really. And he is in computer classes, so the easiest labs to do online they are doing in a classroom?

12:01 pm

Our University is closed for he rest of the semester. Students, who are on break now, have to take all their property home by next weekend

12:01 pm

my son was on break last week so they all already went back. but he has friends that have to move out.

12:02 pm

at other colleges

12:19 pm

I daresay me4y is a word - "my grilled cheese sandwich is nice and me_y"

12:28 pm

Just a reminder, if you type out the indicated word in a clue, you are basically giving the word away.

12:29 pm

ok, if I stopped my comment after "word" would you know what I was talking about?

12:30 pm

I got side tracked...

12:31 pm

I'm about to go plant some flowers, bea. we took all the landscaping around the pool out because it was looking bad.

12:31 pm

I'm ready to plant flowers.

12:33 pm

No drastic measures are being taken by the NFL yet

12:33 pm

Damn! Got the needlecase yesterday, but not today...

12:34 pm

I always forget that word

12:35 pm

We're in the Seattle area, MLF - schools closed, no gatherings over 250 (including churches), and people over 60 (me) and with health issues advised to stay home.

12:36 pm

ughh ch

12:36 pm

Stay safe and do what they say keep yourself as healthy as you can being indoors:)

12:36 pm

Why would the NFL be taking drastic measures. They aren't even playing.

12:37 pm

the college have their pro days and the draft is coming up

12:37 pm

my nephew plays for Kentucky Wesleyan.

12:38 pm

is he going for the draft?

12:39 pm

the draft meaning if they will allow people to be there or not ie spectators/fans

12:39 pm

Not sure -- haven't heard. Wouldn't be surprised, but I know his mom and dad want him to finish college first.

12:39 pm

Well, I guess if college is not in session, that would cancel college days. It's over a month before the draft.

12:39 pm

oh that's good :)

12:40 pm

bzz some schools are/were on spring break already

12:40 pm

some were told not to go back

12:41 pm

Yes, I heard that.

12:41 pm

I don't know how many are having their pro/college days as we speak

12:44 pm

my husband said a man in Walmart put lots of cans of food in his cart. I guess my husband found whatever he thought we needed

12:44 pm

but also said the store was kind of depleted

12:46 pm

All St Patricks Day activities -

1:34 pm

Have been cancelled here. All schools & colleges closed. Mass fatality planning underway. It's really very scary.

1:34 pm

Yikes, Soodle.

1:38 pm

I think we're moving in that direction.....

1:39 pm

stay home Soodle and wash everything before you go out and when you come home. Mass fatality planning is very scary!

1:42 pm

Indeed. We are in uncharted waters for sure. ((((Bugs))). I hope you are well?

1:47 pm

we are. I am making chicken soup for friends who have colds so it will get here soon enough. I just wash things down all the time and starting out healthy helps.

1:56 pm

ever evolving here in the US

1:56 pm

although the response is much more state by state than at the federal level for the most part

1:57 pm

States like California and Washington, as well as the city of New York are banning public gatherings

1:57 pm

Hockey, Basketball and Soccer have all suspended their seasons

1:57 pm

Broadway too

soodle

okey dokey then

2:11 pm

Just visited Trader Joe's on a Thursday aft at 2 pm thinking (silly me) it wouldn't be busy. It felt like the End of Days in there. Shelves stripped clean. Lines like in Soviet era groceries. Carts piled to the brim. I bought some feta cheese :-)

2:20 pm

sounds like a fun time

2:41 pm

The more that things close down, the more people go into panic mode. I just read that Broadway theaters have gone dark.

2:43 pm

yeah, just found out our local grocery store is out of most things cleaning/anti bacterial related...even eggs

my county has to greatest number in the state. on the way home from the y today i heard the governor's press conference. the couty is effectively shut down, except for essential retail, which are grocerires, gas stations pharmacies. all gymsa nd community centesr, all schoolsallt heaters , are closed.

theaters and entertainment venues like concert halls.

for two weeks, effective Saturday.

and the neighboring state of NJ is in sync with this.

2:48 pm

mix 3 parts 91% alcohol to 1 part aloe vera gel to get homemade purell

if that makes you feel better, do it. anything that makes you feel better, without taking supplies away from your neighbor, go fot it.

2:52 pm

yes, unfortunately a lot of the toll is psychological it would seem

2:52 pm

And if you can find rubbing alcohol, are a clever shopper. Stores are wiped clean of that too.

as for me, my county goernment CALLS ME with updates and sponsors town halls via phone where we can talk ditrectly with state epidemiologist, health dept., etc.

i have a large bottle we bought to de ice the car locks. no little vectors running around in here, so i will not be disinfecting the residence.

but i will say i ran to walmart this AM and a whole aisle evoted to TP was bare.

i agree with non medical measures. the goal is containment

2:55 pm

I think I have a year's supply of TP in my house, but it has more to do with mismanagement of buying frequency than because I'm planning for the apocalypse

2:55 pm

Well, if the apocalypse comes, you will go out with a clean butt.

unfortunately, we have learned a big lesson from the awful scenario in WA state

2:56 pm

at least we have babble :)

lol moo. e3very buy something twice becaue you forgot?

2:56 pm

We'll always have Paris...I mean Babble

2:56 pm

I'll keep that in mind as I fight off the TP-deprived zombies

i just gave away a second jair os pimientos to my friend.

2:56 pm

no, never ever done anything like that TO :)

lol

2:57 pm

which reminds me, I would like to get some more olives

2:57 pm

Another item that I generally over supply myself on

hahaha we'll all be craving SOMETHING

2:57 pm

but happen to be on an ebb right now

*sigh* i do need to go to the grovery to get a birthday card. *shudder*

2:58 pm

Make your own ;)

2:58 pm

my wife is good at those sort of things, not that she always admits it

i could eat for a month with what i have on hand. but i do know people who live paycheck to paycheck and can hardly buy for a week at a time.

2:59 pm

yeah, and a lot of those folks are also going to be hurting for paychecks given the suddenness of this

i worry about hourly workers. there are many who just about get by.

i am going to a metting of food pantry tonight to see what we can do

county website was not available - too much traffic i think

but last town hall was last night. things changing rapidly.

sorry for going on

3:11 pm

suit suite

me 6/27 is a weird word

3:56 pm

hello. just home from an after school seminar with the principal. As of right now, all schools in our county still open. people, especially the pregnant teachers and those with little kids, were clearly vexed. All after school activities, sports and field trips are cancelled, and no community groups can use the school facilities. Im not too happy with this. in school - safe. after school - not safe. makes no sense!

it seems as if kids are vectors, trif. how do you deal with that?

4:06 pm

it is all very upsetting. most of the kids I work with have at least one sibling in college, who have been sent home due to the colleges closing. and those students come in to school every day

we are on the same restirctions that Italy implmented. It's working there to contain things

it is very upsetting to be in education or health care right now. i wish you the best.

Italy did not have anywhere near enough restriction, hence the country of 60 million is at a shut down right now.

4:28 pm

a lot of people got upset when the principal said the school was remaining open because we don't have any confirmed cases yet, but are trying to prevent cases happening. I cannot see how waiting for a case to present and then shutting the school solves anything

4:29 pm

hi all. I am glad I am retired and no longer working in healthcare.

5:01 pm

I was in the hospital for three months at the end of 2018, and one thing that I noticed was how automatically the medical folks used the purell stuff - and there was a dispenser every few feet, it seemed. It was like "see dispenser, use dispenser" even if they'd touched nothing in the room. I imagine it's even more so now.

5:05 pm

Hi Peri, Trif, Helen et al. I have 2 siblings who are General Practitioners. Both have seen infected patients today. Both have staff who are rightly concerned about their own, and their families health. I work in the Coroner's service & we are currently arranging a conference call for Sunday to discuss mass fatality arrangements.

5:05 pm

hello soodle my dearest. it's a weird time for sure

5:06 pm

Ah, Trif. How lovely to see you. ((()))

5:08 pm

you too! I was so hoping they were going to suspend school - give us all a chance to catch our breath and figure out what is going on.

5:09 pm

Today I paid €12 for 4 packs of a particular brand of baby food. I paid €31 to post it to the UK. It is out of stock there, and his nibs likes it. Go figure.

5:09 pm

golly. that was nice of you!

5:10 pm

Extraordinary times!

5:10 pm

here the stores are completely out of ....well, everything! people are panicking and hoarding

5:10 pm

i am not at all sure what the big demand for toilet roll is. Coronavirus doesn't cause diarrhea

5:11 pm

it's the fear of stores closing, and the fear of being stuck at home for weeks in quarantine without enough.

5:12 pm

no no, i know - just being cheeky. get it?

5:14 pm

I get ya, lol - but it's true we do go through an incredible amount of it here, with my disabled daughter, her fellow, and my son all under my roof with me. Part of her problem leads to frequent bathroom visits, and she's the sort of person whose habits (overuse of TP is one) are seemingly unchangeable.

5:14 pm

Trif, in our town I've been putting up health posters, answering questions, etc, and I get asked all the time: What's up with toilet paper shortage!? It's because the CDC advised people have about an extra two weeks worth of non-perishable food and household goods and medicines, in case they need to self quarantine. Many people took that to mean getting a year's supply of toilet paper. lol!! I honestly don't know why!! We stocked up on our favorite brand of tissue, for sneezing.

5:14 pm

Luckily, my DIL texted me early this morning to see if I could get this stuff. I called to the store before 9.00am & bought 4 packs. By 1.00 pm there wasn't a grain of it left. (Also - and I know I'll spell this wrong) diarrhoea is a symptom.

5:14 pm

panic won't help anyone though.

5:15 pm

anyway, i am off to cook dinner. tra la la

5:15 pm

I can't afford to panic - broke until next Wednesday, by which time things may well and truly be on lockdown, who knows?

5:19 pm

Bye Trif! Enjoy dinner. And, Rbud, you are far from alone. Many people simply don't have the funds to buy in advance. Like you, I live paycheck to paycheck.

5:29 pm

Our supermarkets are now limiting Toilet paper to one pack per person - somehow they are still selling out within an hour of restocking shelves. Grand Prix starts this weekend, just announced there will be no public allowed in. Not sure if GP will go ahead - Mc:Laren has pulled out and gone home

5:30 pm

But I understand Ferrari (based in Northern Italy -

5:30 pm

Sadly Tom Hanks and his wife have contracted coronavirus here & are in Gold Coast Hospital now

hello, lyn!

5:31 pm

Ferrari came - weird decision!

5:31 pm

sorry. I hear Ferrari are still travelling????

5:31 pm

Hi Owl

are they that bad that they are in hospital?

trif, phila schools are open beacuase they say they are a food source for many children. at least, for now.

5:33 pm

Owl - symptons sound mild but yes they are - they are both quite old so seems prudent

are mild or are very sick?

and so much for the hope that the virus will go away with warm weather

5:34 pm

Mild by the sound of it

lol 63 is not my idea of quite old :)

5:36 pm

nor mine - but it is for coronavirus

the information here is that the rateis highest in those 80+

5:37 pm

starts at 60 here - oh to be a child again

unless you are already chronically ill or immuco comromised

5:38 pm

don't I know it

how are you?

5:38 pm

71

oops i did not mean how old!

5:39 pm

and immun compromised

5:39 pm

so-so given everything

you are in my prayers.

5:40 pm

a couple of orthodox schools up the road have been closed as a teacher and family returned from the US have coronavirus

5:41 pm

The tinfoil hat brigade are saying this is a cull. (Multiple eyerolls)

wow i guess they were on the weat coast.

5:42 pm

All the persons with coronavirus have returned from the USA or Iran here. Not sure how the Hanks got it...I am guessing they had movie staff come from the US recently.

5:43 pm

what is a cull in Ireland Soodle?

yep, the west coast is terrible.

5:45 pm

Well- for example- when the deer population becomes a problem, authority is given to euthanise a number of them. O

forgive me my insensitivity, lyn

5:47 pm

so they say Mother Nature reckons it is time for another plague?

5:47 pm

Thats a cull. Happens with seals as well. Dreadful, I know, but it happens.

5:47 pm

We do it too don't feel special!

i was to go to a meeting tonight and my SO was wuite agitated that I not.

5:48 pm

I think they think this particular cull is manmade

oh, the rumors are rampant.

5:48 pm

At least they won't blame it on China - as most things are

i am getting my info from my health dept. the media does not get it right.

5:49 pm

Like I said - the tinfoil hat brigade

5:49 pm

aka the Facebook brigade perhaps

stop it or someone will think tinfoil hats protect you from the illness.

5:50 pm

lol

5:50 pm

tule

i really need to get dinner. somehow, i don't feel very hungry.

5:51 pm

you can't buy face-masks anymore here but I haven't heard of a run on tinfoil - perhaps we can start a new trend

5:52 pm

But in practical terms, the closure of schools etc has huge implications for working parents. Kids have to be cared for. Parents have to work. Huge dilemma.

i just want to get through the 2 week shutdown and be ok on the other side. did a public relations thing last Sunday night at a concert.

crowds and close talkers.

getting back to the grid, i want "uptilt". denied.

5:56 pm

8:15 pm

OH NO!!! It's fine the schools are closed, large gatherings are prohibited, and there's no toilet paper, but now I just found out the LIBRARY is closing! AAAGGGHHHH!!!

8:16 pm

Oh, no! The library closing would be a BIG problem for me.

8:17 pm

Exactly! They did give us a heads up - we have until 6pm tomorrow to go get books, movies, music, etc. No word on when they will reopen.

8:19 pm

I would have to check out far more books than I could read in a couple of months and just keep renewing the ones I hadn't got to online.

8:20 pm

Yes! In a way, since I'm retired and have been strongly advised to stay home for the duration, this is a blessing in disguise. In fact, my daughter teased me today and said, "Mom, as an introvert, you've been preparing for this your whole life!" lol!

8:21 pm

I'm your age, but still working part-time. Although there are rumors they may be closing the campus.

8:26 pm

All schools are shut down here for at least the next 5 weeks, and even some restaurants are closed. Our police station and fire station are closed to visitors and walk-ins. Churches have cancelled services.

8:29 pm
