9:51 am

It took me a minute. We have the QU5 City of Charlotte here. That's where my head was.

10:02 am

I just got Ruru’s funny clue about SF…..boy am i slow.

11:27 am

happy Superb Owl Sunday to all who observe

11:28 am

superb owl? that's a new one

11:29 am

Can't say that I care who wins, but we are festive nonetheless. I heard this is the second biggest day for food consumption, Thanksgiving being the first.

11:29 am

oh - super bowl

11:29 am

not a football fan

11:30 am

yes a clever way to get around the NFL licensing/trademark folderol

11:30 am

Is there no Superbowl of curling?

11:30 am

The Briar

11:31 am

I see the police finally cleared the idiots from the border - at least on the Canadian side --- people like them who think it is there "charter right" to disturb and disrupt the lives of others make me so angry.

11:31 am

and the Tournament of Hearts

11:31 am

... true

11:32 am

* their right -- funny how the mind thinks one thing and the fingers do something else

11:33 am

it's all rights, no responsibilities

11:33 am

have pr 8 and re 8 -- what am I missing please?

11:34 am

qu 8

11:34 am

I guess as a parent who raised that generation I have to accept responsibility for the "me first" attitude, but it still makes me angry at how selfish people can be.

11:37 am

they're only there because of self-centered-ness to start with - i.e. that masks should not apply to them because of whatever groundless reasons they have come up with for the last two years.

11:37 am

oh, and tr 8

11:38 am

I read something the other day to the effect that those born in 1900 suffered through 2 world wars, the korean and vietnam wars, the spanish flu pandemic and a stock market crash that caused hardship and hunger nationwide and still went forward witha "get on with it and enjoy life" attitude. Now these guys think it is a hardship to get a vaccination?

11:39 am

indeed, nan, excellent point

11:40 am

ok back to looking for those 8's, tr and qu

11:40 am

masks, vaccinations, they reject them both for the same lame reasons. In Japan they've worn masks forever, well before this virus, and don't mind them at all, they know it helps everyone else.

11:42 am

it's interesting. I do think, though, that at some point in life you start looking for what you yourself believe - not necessarily leaning on what you thing parents taught you to believe. I sort of hate that 'it's the way i was raised. oh come on.

11:44 am

The way I was raised vs, me now are two very different things

11:44 am

Yeah, my mom complained that me and my sister turned out different from her philosophically. I pointed out that we grew up in the Washington, DC of the 1970s and 80s, not the Cleveland, Ohio of the 1950s and 60s, so of course we didn't fully align with her.

11:44 am

I don't see where you are coming from mab. But then I am probably one of your parents' generation.

11:46 am

I see nothing wrong in practicing decency and kindness towards others nor in respecting others rights and needs.

11:46 am

I think mab is saying that the way you raise your kids is not necessarily the way they turn out. Hence the phrase "I didn't raise you to be this way"

11:47 am

well I was born this way

11:47 am

I guess that how one's brought up has to be looked at critically in some areas. people need to think for themselves - they are not who their parents are.

11:48 am

Ru goes Lady Gaga

11:48 am

priceless

11:49 am

but as you point out, nan, sometimes the legacy you leave your kids is good. the kids just have to think it through.

11:49 am

I think it is unfortunate that with the economic necessity for most parents to need 2 incomes, today's kids are not receiving the "hands on" parenting of previous generations. Attitudes are learned at a very early age and hard to get rid of -- racism being a prime example.

11:51 am

* that was on the bad side -- on the good side children benefit from seeing their parents help others.

11:51 am

I think working parents can do a lot of hands on parenting. It's a choice.

11:51 am

I grew up with really narrow minded parents and they were uptight and stingy too. I"ve become their polar opposite

11:52 am

stats for the last column lone E please?

11:52 am

Maybe they just didn't have the money to throw around, ru -- or were you meaning emotionally stingy?

11:53 am

eq 5 harp

11:54 am

they were not generous people nan.. they were middle class. They were emotionally stingy too.. never home always gambling or working and leaving us alone

11:54 am

yes, ru. mine were not exemplary, and somehow i knew that on some levels as a kid ie racism, all kinds of ways of thinking of 'others'.

11:55 am

I can see why you feel bitter then

11:55 am

my father was a total racist.. it was unbelievable the crap that came out of his mouth

11:55 am

i mean, i knew they were so wrong.

11:55 am

I'm not bitter nan.. at least not anymore.. I've moved on

11:59 am

I grew up in a small town where your school is an ethnic melting pot and your friends come from all different backgrounds. I guess that is why I am so shocked at the racist violence we see today. Now I know that my parents didn't have close friends of people of different ethnicities and faiths, but they didn't "badmouth" them either and they did belong to the same service clubs and do business with each other.

12:00 pm

mine had terribly difficult times growing up. think it made them mean-spirited, angry was their baseline.

12:00 pm

Hugs Ru...my parents were the parents that all kids deserve...I am so lucky to still have my 94 yo mom...such a guppy childhood and beyond filled with unconditional love for everyone another and all mankind. They both came from broken homes and not a mean bone in their body. Here's another hug for you!

12:00 pm

true for me too Mab.. my parents came out of the depression with a bad attitude

12:01 pm

Oh dear it wasn't a guppy childhood, lol, meant happy!

12:01 pm

there's something about many in my parent's generation that astounds me as to how self-centered and mean they were.

12:02 pm

thanks' MP.. i thought your comment was a little fishy

12:02 pm

that's lovely mp. see? your parents were able to see who they wanted to be, perhaps, despite difficult early times. bless your mom.

12:03 pm

Yes I didn't want anyone tuning in to to get hooked on that!

12:03 pm

break time - back to finish later.

12:03 pm

be well, nan

12:04 pm

Darn typos again I meant tuna-ing...ruined my sarcasm

12:04 pm

LOL MP

12:04 pm

bye nan

12:04 pm

you're floundering mp with puns

12:05 pm

Bye Nan dude she say she'll be back to fish later?

12:05 pm

the internet isn't her only net

12:06 pm

Oops my fingers are flopping around today

12:06 pm

I'm surprised no one else is taking the bait?>

12:07 pm

i'm the worst punner, but guppy to see yours.

12:07 pm

with baited breath

12:07 pm

Meanwhale, some others jumped in

12:08 pm

Not to bass man

12:08 pm

I probably should get going... I have to be trout and about

12:08 pm

12:08 pm

Darn meant not too bass mab

12:09 pm

12:09 pm

Yes me too ru I have a few fish to fry also

12:10 pm

Ru are the grunion running tonight?

12:15 pm

Hey dc, glad our winter storm was very mild haven't been out yet but looks like grass covered lightly and drippy wet.

12:16 pm

yes, it's melting fast as snowflakes yet fall. Black ice likely later, but a pleasant afternoon.

12:19 pm

oh, our lovely black ice. i remember it well.

12:21 pm

I don't miss commuting in the winter weather. Now I just stay in and play!

12:23 pm

i had drivers' ed in ice and snow in February when i was 16. Very useful conditions for driving lessons.

12:28 pm

i hope nan didn't leave because of our open therapy session, but because it was too hard to babble.

12:28 pm

i, for one, over exposed my past. wish i hadn't.

12:29 pm

fun game, babble, bring all your deepest secrets! Reveal, reveal!

12:37 pm

relatives told my of their times fighting in WWI, living through the depression, and fightingin WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. I am grateful for the first person accounts that i was able to hear.

12:38 pm

me, not my, oops

12:39 pm

My Dad wrote his autobiography. Wrote about his time on a LST at Iwo Jima. Plus, lots of other things

12:39 pm

oh, neat, bichon

12:42 pm

so good to have that. and maybe, too, to share with history organizations.

12:49 pm

hi again - no worries mab, I left because it was 10 am and I hadn't had breakfast yet :)

12:55 pm

oh, good!

12:56 pm

I just meant to say that i don't think how you raised your children caused all this. or at least i really doubt it.

12:57 pm

people can have the best of childhoods and turn out awful - strange, that.

12:57 pm

done.

1:00 pm

I meant we as a generation, Mab. My generation as a whole was certainly more permissive than the previous one. For myself I am amazed that my children turned out so well -- not sure it was all on me.

1:01 pm

mo 7 please?

1:03 pm

so many unknown factors. but parents are huge, of course. mo - your cash is escaping!

1:06 pm

but it can't get far on foot...

There is an ai word that the dictionary tells is Scottish and means point the way, and an ai word that is always in the grid and accepted but not in the dictionary,

1:18 pm

still haven't found that qu 8

1:21 pm

1:22 pm

what an odd mo word, thank you mab

1:40 pm

Yay instacart on the way. they are still limiting how much water one can buy at a time.

1:53 pm

first pe 6 please?

1:54 pm

what is instacart?

1:57 pm

instacart is a gig-based grocery shop+delivery service. like Uber, but for your shopping

1:58 pm

ah - ok. Just called grocery delivery here, or you have the option of curbside pickup

1:59 pm

is there a problem with water purity where you live?

1:59 pm

love instacart. It's such a treat to not have to fight my way through the grocery store.

2:00 pm

instacart is store-agnostic (or multi-store, I guess) so it is mostly for metropolises

2:02 pm

If I could retire and get alcohol delivery I might become a shut-in : D

drizly is pretty prevalent now, molly. you could

2:03 pm

Not in Maryland. It's an ABC state.

2:03 pm

lol - not too many of those around here. We are the 3rd largest metropolitan area in the province at around 223,000

laaaaame

2:04 pm

first pe 6 please?

2:07 pm

or the tr 8?

2:09 pm

the tr is peaceful, calm

2:09 pm

pe6 is if Peri Lived a long long time

2:09 pm

2:13 pm

*!*~*!* not a bad grid -- my brain just doesn't want to work today

2:14 pm

think I'm going brain dead as a result of being locked down for such a long time.

2:14 pm

sadly, the more that restrictions are lifted, the more they tighten up for us.

2:15 pm

if mask mandates are dropped, I won't even be able to go shopping anywhere but online and certainly no community events, even outdoors.

2:17 pm

Nan, you can certainly go outdoors if not around people. COVID does not float through the air.

2:17 pm

the omicron variant is airborne, Molly

2:18 pm

but true I can go out for a walk, but I still don't see or talk to anyone other than virtually.

2:18 pm

if you have 3 shots nan you are safer. you can wear a mask and keep your distance from others and the omicron won't hit you too hard. It is like a 24 hour flu for those with 3 shots.

2:19 pm

bugs - my hasband has lung cancer -- that is why we have to stay in lock down. Covid, flu or a bad cold could be life threatening for him.

2:19 pm

*husband

2:19 pm

Well if that is true than it will come into your house through your ventilation and you are not safe anywhere.

2:20 pm

nooo, not through the ventilation i don't think.

2:20 pm

Why not, if it is airborne?

2:21 pm

i've not heard that's a problem, but for office buildings and schools with people in them. not homes.

2:21 pm

It doesn't hang around in the air forever Molly -- you should read up on it. The reason Omicron is spreading faster and more easily than Delta is because it is airborne as opposed to waterborne.

2:21 pm

Molly, why don"t you go to the CDC website and educate yourself, rather than depending on tidbits you might glean from here...

2:23 pm

yes -- if someone in the building has omicron then it will spread through the ventilation system in a closed environment. That is why the schools are being require to keep windows open where possible and have hepafilters in the classroom and improved filter systems on the furnaces.

2:24 pm

it is also why self-distancing is a good idea - even outdoors.

2:25 pm

infection is dose-dependent. If any virus got into the house from outside it would be at levels too low to infect

2:26 pm

i'm very uneasy with so many states ending mask mandates in schools and businesses. too soon. we're still losing more than 2000 irreplaceable souls a day.

2:26 pm

true, unless you are immune compromised, lyv

2:27 pm

hagd everyone - on my way to wordle. Stay safe :)

2:27 pm

Jesus, reading chat is heartbreaking, ever

2:27 pm

Jesus, reading chat is heartbreaking, ever

2:27 pm

and kids can carry a tremendous virus load. what about the teachers and people at home? i don't understand.

2:28 pm

Death is inevitable. You are living in fear because of the media.

2:29 pm

I call crap on that ajb. you also need to read the reports of reputable scientists

2:29 pm

not actually, ajbns. real people are dying. you need to choose your media carefully.

2:29 pm

do you stop at red lights ajb?

oh lord. what's heartbreaking is someone calling others cowards in so many words.

2:31 pm

People are always dying. The propaganda has caused you to live in a constant state of fear, live life because you're eventually dead any ways.

2:32 pm

No one is calling any one a coward and yes I follow traffic laws

2:32 pm

again - do you stop at red lights ajb?

i'm not living in fear at all, because i'm vaccinated and i believe in science, because a virus isn't political or looking for its way into the news cycle.

2:33 pm

let's all lie down on the train tracks. it's obviously a dreadful disease; i wouldn't want anyone i know to succumb to it - it's horrible. and esp. when it doesn't have to happen with existing protections.

2:35 pm

honestly, shall we stop treating other diseases as well? well, life is short anyway?

yep, don't treat that breast cancer because i'll eventually die anyway.

2:36 pm

Ah. This conversation brings me out of lurking. My husband is just home from a month in the hospital with COVID. Because he has leukemia, the vaccines were ineffective. He has had monoclonal antibodies and will receive an COVID antigen shot next week. We are very much aware that people die all the time, but this is not the way he wants to die. We are NOT in a constant state of fear, but we're being cautious because of his immune system--and diligent.

2:36 pm

Nan is doing exactly what she needs to do to keep her husband safe and none of us have any right to judge her which is where this went.

thank god my 92 yo grandfather was vaccinated, because when he caught COVID a month ago it was bad enough for someone just a week out of heart surgery. without the vaccine he might have been dead.

2:38 pm

That's a pity to read Miranda, ineffective vaccines

2:39 pm

You can't be certain of that Leigh. Lots of people have lots of different symptoms to this strand of the flu

2:40 pm

ineffective immune system due to treatment, not ineffective vaccines.

2:40 pm

Some suffer, some don't even know they have it

2:40 pm

Ineffective for his kind of leukemia, aj. Research just out on that. I also had COVID and, because of my 3 shots, experienced just a cough and tirednes.

2:40 pm

How old are you Miranda?

ajb- .....what? he had covid, it was confirmed.

2:41 pm

82

i'm going back to what i was doing. this is a waste of my time.

2:42 pm

it's statistically proven the vaccine works. you sound like an antivaxxer ajb. over and out.

2:42 pm

That's a good age. God bless you and your husband

2:45 pm

mirandapan, i hope he does well - sounds like he really is. I agree, this is not how to end a long life. best to your family.

2:46 pm

It's also completely unknown what the long term impacts of these mrna vaccines will be, but yes by all means use that label anti vaxxer.

It is not scientifically reasonable to expect long term effects from them, so…yeah. You sound pretty ill-informed.

2:47 pm

Thank you mab. I really would like to have him around for a while yet.

2:48 pm

i feel no happiness when the unvaccinated get ill. good luck to you ajbns. maybe reconsider.

2:48 pm

I'll stay in the control group. Thanks

2:48 pm

Someone needs to get a life and stop stalking my every post. As for COVID, everyone needs to do what they believe will keep them and their loved ones the most safe. I get that.

2:49 pm

All scientific experiments need a control group

2:49 pm

just curious - who is stalking your posts? how can you tell?

This isn’t an experiment. It is a pandemic.

Man! How about that bottom-row e? Could I get a clue?

2:50 pm

and the vaccines did have control groups, did they not?

They did, mab

2:51 pm

Not you mab

2:51 pm

the control is the unvaccinated - they die more

No. In an experiment you control for variables like age, health, smoking yes/no. In a pandemic people call themselves “control” when they mean “living reasons my unvaccinated asthmatic son has a limited social life.”

2:53 pm

please find some proper news outlets ajbns.

2:53 pm

2:58 pm

Mab, could you recommend me some of your proper news outlets?

3:03 pm

I don't understand why people think they can convince someone of anything in a word game chat

3:04 pm

failure to read the room is an internet endemic

3:05 pm

ajbns... you must be loving having Mark Drakeford in power//

3:05 pm

i don't know what's available in wales or the uk at large, really. they exist in numbers i'd guess.

3:06 pm

I'm lucky enough to live largely off grid, what Mark Drakeford rules bares little impact largely

3:06 pm

mab...unfortunately Wales and the UK is flooded with Murdoch tripe....much as the rest of the world

Anything from the top-center of this chart..... https://adfontesmedia.com/

3:08 pm

Weird how the world changes through fear mongering. You can see how wars get voted for.

3:08 pm

mmm.. not sure that's the case at all, at all. you might check murdoch's holdings. then steer clear, for a start.

3:08 pm

ajbs... another example of contradictory living... you live largely off grid...but happily play on line

3:08 pm

ajbs... another example of contradictory living... you live largely off grid...but happily play on line

3:10 pm

There are people who believe that everything the government and government agencies put out is propaganda. Hence, the big division between vaccine lovers and vaccine haters.

3:10 pm

wars, sars cov-2? not seeing a connection. but someone's told you that so it must be true.

3:10 pm

how is it fear mongering??? I dont live in fear... I live with caution... its like looking both ways before crossing the road... i could just stroll out onto the highway willy nilly... buy I choose to exercise caution before doing so

3:10 pm

You are talking like a fool AJBS.. I hope you avoid catching covid. Here in California we call unvaccinated people covidiots or vaxxholes

3:13 pm

i'll have to read back - looks interesting. ru, how far are you from lakeport?

3:13 pm

not too far.. maybe 45-50 minutes

hello welk

3:15 pm

I hope I get it, I want natural immunity

3:15 pm

hi owl

love the icon

3:16 pm

date a few millennials AJB.. that ought to help you catch it

3:16 pm

excellent...ajbs... and dontcha just hate all that vaccine that's been coursing thru your body all your life from childhood... how your parents oppressed you and forced you to live a life safe from childhood disease...I honestly don't know how you can live with yourself...

3:16 pm

ajbns, if you survive you'll have a limited degree of immunity. i hope you don't get it. meanwhile read up on the role of the uninoculated and the evolution of mutations in the virus.

pernod. could use a shot.

3:18 pm

no vaccines, no end to pandemic.

3:18 pm

These conversations generally stay more civil if people just state their opinions and refrain from name calling.

3:27 pm

Thanks TO. Damned if I am going to let some citrus fruit get the better of me!

i need to go clean. and get a cocktail it's nearly 5

3:27 pm

meringue is mean, although julia child made it look so easy. whipping it up in her copper bowl, competing with her standing mixer.

perhaps i will venture up the road for a chocolate porter.

3:28 pm

Julia Child made everything look easy

before the super bowl crowd

3:28 pm

the meringue part was easy! The filling was misbehaving
