in short, my father draw me through hell. I suffer from ptss as a result of his upbringing and that will be a handicap to me for the rest of my life. But I also know that people learn from life, and they can change. I feel now, that with my pain and damage acknowledged, there might be room for healing between us.

yes, that is true, that is a good thing to keep in mind. He opened conversations out of the blue last month, with an unpleasantly short, cold letter and a bunch of pictures, and the order to contact him.
I wrote back, thanking him for the pictures and telling him I live with the past every day of my life, that I cannot afford to invite unnecessary hurt into my life now and that his letter did not at all suggest there was anything else to expect but more hurt. So that I would not stay in contact with him.
Then he wrote another kind of letter, in which he regretted he had been so short and cold while he did not intend to be that way. And that he would accept my refusal to not have contact, but that he regretted it very much. I meant to leave it at that.
sprite, your safety and feelings are Number 1. Tread carefully ... your peace and serenity come first :)
i agree, please be careful that your need for closure and admissions do not allow him to continuehis abuse
but it kept churning in my, of course, so finally I decided to tell him, for once in my life, what kind of father he had been to me and what it had done to me, and ask him a lot of questions on the why and how could you. It was a tough letter to write. I told him all the bad memories and the few good ones I have of him.
sounds like you have made some big strides with him already, sprite... i think you're off to a good start and your idea to keep it to letter-writing for now is a good one
and I told him I couldn't be other than extremely cautious and careful when it came to things he wanted or said.
I thought that would be the very last of it, lol
He has never been able to listen, let alone take some criticism. But he has clearly read the whole letter, and let it in, and he has come back with a very honest and adult letter. So... well, who knows. I am going to let it rest for a couple of days, and then I am going to write back another kind of letter. Let's see where it will take us.

One of my daughters is a teacher - She teaches in Broome in the North of our state
I would find that terribly boring, I think. I like the interplay with students -- the less I deal with paperwork and regs the better (so of course I am _so_ looking forward to becoming a public school teacher in a few years...)
...make sure all the paperwork is in order, keep the faculty in line, get students into classes, etc.
