i didnt really want to paint, since we rent this place. i think its a lot of time, effort, and sometimes money (though not much money this time) to put into a place thats not yours. but we are getting ready to sign another year-long lease at this place, so i let hubby talk me into it.
Newness and brightness is always an improvement. Be sure to show the landlord what a HUGE favor you did for him/her.

We had our living room and upstairs hall painted last year. Accent wall in the living room. I LOVE it and we get so many compliments on it. Totally worth it.

I've learned many things from DIY painting. #1: Always use Sherwin Williams paint (not the cheap stuff).
It goes on like pudding because it's so thick, but it lasts forever.
Thicker paint drips less.
#2: If you're going to sell the house soon, use neutral colors.
i have my paint favs too...i will be repainting this whole house in the next few weeks
Actually, #1 should be: if you can afford it, have someone else paint for you!!

Sanding the louvers is really hard, time consuming and a royal pain.
my only miscalculation yesterday was not getting enough of the red paint. i brain-farted and forgot that red takes more coats than most colors, so really, our red wall could use another coat. oh well.
carlee -- i could probably do with cutting in, but frankly, i dont trust hubby to do that. he needs the tape. ;)
Yes, wallpaper removal can be horrifying. Generally, wallpaper is forbidden in my house. I only used a large wallpaper border to cover up a Winnie-The-Pooh border that was in one the bedrooms when we moved it. Puh-leeze.

I found a steamer plus spray with vinegar works. Use breathing mask.
they use all time..no steamer required..no mask....just fleecy

wipe on with a sponge....let sit a few mins...pull off paper...the only time i ever had a problem was someone put up wallpaper with what looked like heavy duty oil based super glue type glue
then was scraping and sanding
I actually like grassy wallpaper. I don't think I'd ever be bbrave enough to use it though.

I agree with Judi. If you are thinking of selling, use neutral colors. And not a different color in every room. My condo looked like Walt Disney threw up when I bought it. Salmon in one room, purple in another, weird blue in another.

i don't see why neutral colors would be better for selling. as a buyer, i hated beige, but knew i could paint over it. i would imagine those who love beige would therefore also know they could paint everything that color.
unless of course people who like color are just smarter, an idea i am willing to entertain :)
mushroom cap is the best colour for selling a home.it is inoffensive,goes with everything and like you ,if a buyer does not like it they think"well,that will be easy to paint over"
Colors evoke different emotions in different people. Realtors and property stagers suggest neutral colors so that potential buyers can envision their own furniture and accessories in the new abode. Vibrant/loud colors tend to turn off buyers.
but look, i have nice colors in my home, and they go well with my furniture, and i think if the overall effect is nice, people just think, this is a nice room - not my taste, maybe, but nice.

well, i have a maritime sort of blue in my kitchen, a pumpkin in the living room, and pale yellow in the bedroom. i don't know if pale yellow counts as neutral or not.

Actually, yellow is recommended for Kitchens. It is considered bright and cheerful - good for waking you up in the a.m. My kitchen is also painted a pale yellow.

That's just it. You want the walls to be neutral so people feel like they can paint over them without a hassle. A buyer sees a red wall and think three coats of paint

well... grammar counts, but not always. I am to4 between knowing how important consistent expectations are for learning; and focusing content-area grades on the actual goals for that lesson (grammar is not "usually" a goal in a mathematics lesson)
I agree Stid- The funny thing is - this is the same teacher who said " I am not a reader. SHe has not read any of the Unfortunate Events, HP, etc...
I would agree that marks should not be docked from a Math assignment stid, but writing is important
I would think that if you are teaching a certain grade, you should at least be familiar with the books that are popular in that age group
hm. I would think it very difficult to connect with students -- and to model literate behavior -- if a teacher can't be bothered to read the texts that are all the rage.

At the same time, I see many students who think well -- critical thinking and logic are strong suits -- but who believe themselves to be slow or stupid because all they ever seem to get graded on are spelling and grammar. I think that is sad.

I work with a terrific Grade 7 Math and Science teacher who doesn't care at all what they are reading or watching. None it has to do with her subjects and she is a great teacher! it all depends on their approach

indeed stidmama,my son uses computer aids for his school work as he as he has fine motor skill issues that will forver make his penmanship much like a second grade student,but we fought and fought and got approval now he can express himself in his studies at 40+ wpm:) we must let go of old and dated ideas and give the children what they need to exell
yep. things like that are learning disabilities of some kind. ideally, that student had accommodations of some kind to help keep learning at grade level in the content areas while continuing to receive help in reading.

I have to agree with all of this. Students should never be shot down for having a weakness in one area or another. They should be encouraged to try harder.

:-D exactly, cross. our elder son types faster than most adults, but handwriting is -- and always will be -- an issue, and tedious. So I insisted throughout his school career that handwriting "neatness" would never count and that single word or phrase answers needed to be accepted on any tests given when he couldn't use the computer.
