Re: May Day. This year the may flowers (hawthorn blossom) are out in force here making countryside and town beautiful. It is bad luck to bring them into the house though, probably cos they attract flies and smell v. strong !

in NY, where I was brought up, schools were closed, people fasted and went to church (not me, though). Here, they work as usual, don't go to church and don't fast.
Very few even get ashes at the beginning of Lent or even think about Lent. So much for a catholic country....
wow! It is against the law here to be open on Good Friday and absolutely illegal to sell alcohol! Same as Christmas Day. And on Anzac Day, if you are open before 1pm, you are fined hugely... Good Friday and Christams are the two days that are sacred here.
