oh, no they're not. Few years ago, coworker need to get to airport, and was worried about how far it was. I took him to window and pointed out that the airport was 3 exits down the road. He was not listening, and finally asked "are those mountains?"

the AC is working, jilli, and the worst heat broke yesterday, so happily the temp is not an issue.
The Chesapeake is about an hour E of here, the Atlantic is about 2.5 hours E of here on the shortest route.

scrabby you must come up and explore algonquin park one time.the endless rivers for canoeing,portaging though the woods and coming across a deer lay of soft moss under the trees,exiting a river at dawn just as the mist and fog burn off a series of small lakes and a loon give a haunting cry..well the portages are not all that great but the rest is nice :))
the little black flies stick to you and your clothing they like to fly in your ears eyes not unheard of to swallow them as they fly in your mouth

Not that I know of. Just head MRI and CT and they had me on the heart monitor all night with blood draws every few hours to check my cardiac enzymes.
Too old for mono. Probably an Enteroviral infection--can cause severe headaches and even viral meningitis.

The best patient/family care we ever got was when my Dad had bypass surgery at Walter Reed. They really addressed all of us through the whole thing. I was impressed.

hmmm - homeschoolers have a concept called unschooling - this is when you don't have a curriculum, you just experience the world and find teachable moments as you do it (worked for my son for a year after he'd been traumatized by traditional schools but I don't know if I'd recommend it for everyone)

I haven't done a study of it, dos, but having a parent who is a teacher, or at least highly educated, certainly helps
my son's problem was that he was extremely gifted in some areas (was reading at a 7th grade level in 1st grade) but not in others (math), and the regular schools didn't know what to do with him; they were starting to label him ADD because he was bored all the time
... I just keep coming across kids who are really nice kids ... and are even quite bright ... but they end up having concentrated on the one subject that the parent knows something about ... and nothing about the other eight courses on the curriculum
so I was kind of frantic :-) I can tell you that trying to homeschool a kid when you are a single mom and working full time is not a good idea
well, with my son we traveled a lot, so I would have him read up on the history and cultural geography of the places we were visiting; we did also do a lot of science but he was already a voracious reader and would read just about anything on his own
mostly what I did was try to keep out of his way :-)
... yes ... your son's case is a difficult one ... my nephew is similar ... but my sister doesn't know the first thing about education ... she just thinks she does ... and now she has a twelve year old operating at a grade 2 level ... and the schools don't know what to do with him
i friend of mine did homeschooling and when my kids were young i homeschooled through the summer...
after a year of unschooling (with a teenager who had been homeschooled herself) he went from reading at a 7th grade level to reading at an 11th grade level - he was about to start the 4th grade at that time
we did a combination of both... unschooling and a formal lesson
I did find a private (day) school for gifted kids about an hour from here, and he went there for three years - they taught the kids at their own level in each class - it was wonderful for him
i kept my kids on a schedule during the summer.....early morning swimming lessons..then home for 2 hours of school work...mostly reading skills then..by 10 am... thye could do what they wanted
but it was an hour away so we moved and I commuted
( favourite thing wee did was make a sun oven ( i forget now proper term...) and there was a solar eclipse so we watched with the pin hole box
after that he was back in the regular schools and was not particularly successful - he is finally finding himself now, though
solar oven is what we usually call them, carlee
i did themes for a week...
there u go..solar oven...baked a ham in it
and made sun tea
... doing it in the summer is one thing ... but I've had a student return from a two year trip around the world ... who gained a lot from the world experience ..... but when she returned to school she had the knowledge suitable for grade 10 ... but she didn't have the foggiest idea about how to do school work ... and her knowledge tended to be on the neat things ... not on the principles that let you learn more neat things ...

i more wanted them to maintain a schedule... and...enjoy the process of learning... that learning is not just a chalkboard and a teacher...but is experiencing stuffs

Sue, they tried to pin ADD on my oldest too. Same deal, he was gifted and bored.
pretty sad when all they have to offer bored gifted kids is an ADD label :-(
re:add ,adhd..they would not let my son into grade one and the public school system unless i drugged him..was a long hard fight and he was diagnosed with adhd,is off that evil ritalin after i threatened to take the public school he went to to court for endangering my son,got him on addral gave him losts to do,and now my son who they called "unteachable" is in grade 11 and pulling a 90 percentile in auto mechanics and was advised to take advanced classes by his shop techer and will be doing co-op work this summer and will graduate at the end of next year:))

I think there has been a move away from that. But back when my 31-year-old was six or seven, all the boys who acted "bored" or "restless", well they tried to tag them with ADD. Didn't work with my son.

speaking as a teacher of the gifted and a parent of a gifted highly active son - it is very difficult to accurately differentiate between ADD and gifted. Characteristic of gifted - high energy activity level, jump for one topic to another, have difficulty finishing projects. Need to get them tested (both IQ and achievement) and then work with schools to get right services. Many states gifted is under special ed and you can require approriate services provided
not in Illinois, unfortunately - no services for gifted students are required
college will be good for my boy,he can focus and be more specialized in his courses and do what he excells at
and used netbooks,tablets etc as he needs to for classes,and not have some draconian high scool dictate when he can and cannot use it for school work
i mean instead of a netbook or even a typewriter,they have someone who write for him! i mean the child can type 50 wpm for god sakes
the nerves in my fingertips are dead from chemo..i also can no longer write,but can hunt and peck with the best! lol
my son's 2nd grade teacher thought he couldn't do math because he would sit without writing on his paper - turned out he was doing all the problems in his head first, because writing was hard for him (the math was easy, he just wanted to make sure he had it right before going to the trouble of trying to write it down)

My favorite story about dyslexia is about my brother-in-law, when he was about 8. He brought home a math test with a big F on it. All the answers marked INCORRECT!!! Turns out,they were all correct, just backward. If the answer was 18, he wrote 81...etc. His mother had a few choice words for the teacher.
