oh...well..last year I basically got tuition $ in a gov't loan...that it...so...7k all my other expenses i had to shoulder...this year am getting more than dble that in loan..but am also getting dble that in grant ( ie...I dont have to pay back)...AND i got word today / yesterday...that I have been approved for an appeal ( to get yet more $) for travel expenses as i live 100 km (60 mi) from school and there is no public transportation that would get me to school on a daily basis.

I discovered an abscess on Bunny Tucker's upper lip this morning so I am taking him to the vet in 40 minutes.
am very happy my doctor isn't too keen on them. She only gives them for things that won't go away by themselves. And she often has us take tests to see which antibiotic we need.
and also "we will assume without asking that every other country is jealous of our health care system"

He is eating well and acting fine but I was petting him this morning and felt it. I don't think it is a tooth abscess.

It's a shame about health care in the US. We actually have very good "quality" health care. And some of the best medical schools in the world. Which is why so many people come here from other countries to go to medical school. It's the way the insurance companies have been allowed to screw up health care that is the problem.

good morning everyone.a interesting tidbit of my own today for those of you who have more than one cat in the house and have introduced a new cat and are going crazy with dominance/alpha cat/fighting issues.you take the worst offender or the new cat if it is trying to overthrow the current alpha kitty and put a harness on him or her with a short thin leash.instantly the cat goes from holy terror to a dangle toy for the other cats and becomes totally submissive and easier to intergrate with the other cats.leave it on for an hour or so at a time.works amazing (imho)

go to costco, get a package of creme brulee in chocolate cups (come either 4 or 6 to a package) -- thaw in fridge and just before serving pour a tablespoon of cointreau or grand marnier on top and put a match to it

I think the chocolate cups is a really nice embellishment for them as well, though. Sort of tricky because I would usually bake them in a bain-marie...but chocolate wouldn't stand up to that.
Ingredients 3 egg yolks1/4 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup heavy cream1 tablespoon brown sugar2 tablespoons white sugar Directions 1.Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Move a rack to the bottom of the oven. 2.Whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla together in a stainless steel bowl until smooth. Bring the cream just to a simmer in a saucepan over medium-low heat; pour into the egg yolk mixture, whisking continually until combined. 3.Bring a couple of inches of water to a simmer in an oven-safe saucepan over medium low heat; set the bowl with the cream mixture over the saucepan to form a double boiler. 4.Place the entire double boiler into the preheated oven; bake until the mixture sets, about 30 minutes. 5.Chill in refrigerator 2 hours. 6.Preheat the oven's broiler and set the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source. 7.Combine the brown sugar with 2 tablespoons of white sugar in a bowl; sprinkle evenly over the cold creme. 8.Heat under the preheated broiler until the sugar melts and browns, 2 to 3 minutes; return immediately to the refrigerator and chill until the sugar is set, about 15 minutes.

oh! RED -- just to be sure I told my son the right thing. I said that the single-most effective disease prevention weapon was washing one's hands thoroughly. We were talking about the use of antibiotic soaps, and I explained why I don't use those, DO wash my hands regularly with regular soap and use alcohol sanitizer when I get in my car from shopping or teaching.

jes, I did a "dummy" thing -- Lucky licked himself raw, and you know shepherds, he got himself infected on his hindquarters. So the vet shaved him, and gave me oral and topical antibiotics. But I completely got turned around and was giving the ceflex only twice a day the first three days. Realized this morning I was completely off schedule and now giving thrice-daily dosing. *shakes head sadly*
We still don't know what actually triggered the itching, it started while I was away. I wonder if he was just being nervous.
just bump it up to 3 times a day, and go with it :)

the problem with overuse (and incorrect use) of antibiotic anythings is the creation of antibiotic-resistant organisms.
yes, crossy. the antibiotic doesn't actually do anything above what regular soap does, except contribute to chemical contamination of the water sources
So their use is properly restricted to times and people who urgently need the extra boost.

On the rare occasion we are both (Grant and I) on antibiotics at the same time we make sure the bottles are color-coded!
I'm confused. What do your allergies and your son's allergies have to do with what the dog is taking?
If the dog takes something and becomes resistant to it, then those resistant bugs are in our environment, too, Molly. Which means that one or the other of us won't be able to take the next-level of antibiotic defense if an infection starts. Bad news.
also, if the antibiotic gets on our hands or other surfaces and is accidentally ingested it could be bad.
well, that, stid, and sometimes you can have contact reactions - some people are so sensitive that just handling the pills can set off an allergic reaction.

it's been a great week... my kids outdid themselves with the cooking as well. good thing we have a beautiful running trail near here (i got lost this morning and ended up walking/jogging for over an hour) and then the kayaking. hopefully won't undo my summer of weight loss in just one week.. will find out monday morning

I had a most-amazing chicken salad that Grant made -- cucumbers, sweet pickles, mayo, honey, canned chicken, paprika, salt, pepper. With lovely corn chips.
