curds are pressed together and aged to make cheese. Cottage cheese is curds and whey. Dried curds are used for poutine, so they squeak when you chew them.

oh, I hate when that happens. I threw a royal hissy fit one year when Grant was swamped by a single teacher's homework -- a teacher who refused to listen to us. Grant didn't have to do the homework for that class after that point, but the next year the teacher reverted to the same policies.

I am taking a break from flogging the keyboard. I am doing nano this year, DR -- and have hit a blank brain. I want to write extra today and tomorrow so that I have enough of a surplus I can slack off when I work. I am getting called 3, 4, sometimes 5 days a week. It's nice to have the work, but I come home too tired to think.

Worth looking into, for sure. Last year, I decided that Grant needed "out" of the math class where he was languishing (he's naturally gifted in math, but was earning only a C, even on tests). We enrolled him in an online public school for math for the rest of the year and that ended up working pretty well. He stayed in his other classes. There are so many things I would do differently though, if I had known ahead of time...

I would definitely talk to parents of students at any school you look at. Sometimes those kinds of schools get very competitive between students.

Rather than scores, find out where students go when they graduate, how many of the students graduate on time and how many transfer out before graduating. Those are measures of how the school serves students that are more meaningful in many ways than test scores.

in washington state, we have an online database through the superintendent of public instruction. It tells how students "do" on the high stakes tests in various grades over time as well as graduation rates, poverty rates in schools (by a free and reduced lunch count) and also can tell how many of the teachers are highly qualified.

Hanging out sounds nice! I had lunch with a couple friends today, and it was so much fun. Can't afford to do that often, but it was so worth it. Next time, maybe I'll suggest we visit at home and I can bake something nice. My friend and I are both on restricted diets, when I combine the few things we can both eat, it makes for a sensible but tasty treat.
I didn't realize your kids swim -- used to take my kids to the Y several times a week when they were little. Swimming is great exercise.

I actually rendered lard this year (I can eat pork products) and made a lovely chicken liver pate with some of it. It didn't last long! LOL but she couldn't try any.

I think both my grandfathers struggled with it a bit, and some of the extended family. I have heard stories. Tom and I have tried to make wine and occasional alcohol part of our children's growing up (we had occasional wine with supper or things like egg nog and let them sip at it) so there isn't any mystery, neither one really likes the taste so I think we might be on the right track.

I am told wine is actually good for the digestion, and there are medical studies that describe benefits of moderate drinking. Which is why I try to model that for our kids.

I'm more of a listener than a player these days, have a 20 seat pass to the Cleveland Orchestra. They have new affordable seating plans which makes going more often possible. My adult kids and I make a family outing of it. I love our hometown treasure.

Last night Grant's school band had their first concert of the season. Down to two tubas, and they sounded FINE! The senior player got the new tuba with the paddle valves, but Grant got the other fairly nice one. They had some really difficult passages, too. Love it when they play so well. The first orchestra concert of the year for him is Sunday, too.

The music with the commercial was pretty high brow for me .... that and the Lone Ranger

The only restriction is that you can only redeem your seats starting monday the week of the concerts, but you can redeem as many or as few as you like for a concert. So, instead of seeing them twice last year, I saw them SEVEN times. (: To anyone who complains about ticket prices, I point out that for the price of a ballgame, you see 100 people onstage, the top of their profession, and the never choke!

so true, melon! because we don't live in seattle we can't take advantage of those sorts of offers, but the season passes are reasonable in our area.
I just love tubas. I know so much more about the orchestra and band instruments now, thanks to my boys' participation I can even pick out different instruments and parts now! :-) I used to hear only the parts that were in my vocal range.
Giving a kid the chance to play a musical instrument is one of the best things a parent can do, IMO.

I think so, too -- there is a self-confidence and perseverance that musicians develop that is wonderful, particularly for adolescents. And the band has been a great social/support for both my kids.

Exactly, stid. In most high schools, instrumentalists are "overrepresented" in calculus and AP courses. The thing about the arts is, you can't do it for the grade, by nature a kid who loves music doesn't want to just get by, they want to get good, really good at it, an ethic that will follow them. And, yes, band nerds are cool!
