my daughter teaches reception (4-5 year old) and loves every minute of it, she keeps us in fits over some of the things the children say

I don't really know much about guns, have never fired one. However hubby is in law enforcement (animal services) and does have several guns in the house. He also did period reenactment for years, so has some black powder rifles

omg, there was a shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut this morning. 18 children and 8 adults were killed. We need gun control in this country.
I think it was mentioned here earlier. It is horrible. I read that the shooter is one of the parents.
As a parent, this is the unthinkable thing. School is one of the first places you send your children, trusting that it is a safe environment.

This is frightening for anyone who teaches in an elementary school environment.
we're reeling here in calgary because a little boy fell at school in a washroom and his hall pass lanyard got stuck in a door - he was found unconscious (who knows how long he was without oxygen) and is now on life support. and then this. parents send their children to school - 'have a good day, sweetheart' - and then things like this happen. heartbreaking.
scary times all over - in schools, shopping malls, theatres, home invasions - i'm sorry for what people do to people.

I am so blessed to have had a real family experience in my childhood and provided one for my kids. And we have 3 other boys, friends of ours, that when they needed a family we were there for him.
I don't think parents fully realize what a precious little time they have with their kids and how fast it will go....
And I think the news needs to cover this stuff LESS, just adds fuel to the fame..
It is amazing how time telescopes on us. The years looked so far away when the children were just born and then they are gone and we are sometimes thought of as the wise ones. How did we get this way?
My friend in CT says her 8 year old doesn't want to go to the memorial service. Smart kid. Knows what she DOESN'T need.

yes, he should start chemo next week (we missed the call from the cancer center today as we were at the vet's with the dog, will call first thing Monday)
will he start with the flushing out kind of chemo or will that come later?
not sure what the flushing out kind is. I think they will start him on the biological (monoclonal antibodies) as well as the FOLFIRI (which is a mixture of 3 chemicals)
the biologicals he will get every week, the FOLFIRI every other week, for six months
I read about a thing you posted where they open the gut and flush the whole thing with chemo for a couple of hours to catch any escapees.
oh, right. No, they won't do that unless he gets significant recurrence, where they would have to operate again to get it out. Hopefully that won't happen.
got it. I do hope he has an easy time with the chemo
me too. Apparently it is cumulative; it is easier in the beginning but gets tough towards the end. But everyone responds differently so we shall just have to see.
and are you still taking care of yourself? I can offer you all kinds of virtual treats here that won't hurt like a trip to your favourite beach on a sunny day........

They just said on the local news that the parents are still at the fire station waiting for the release of the children's bodies. There are memorial services in just about every town and people are flocking to them. The local news has been nothing but since 10 am.

I live about 45 mins. from Sandy Hook or Newtown and parents here were taking their kids out of school. I, like you Doren, don't cry easily, but went they announced that 20 little ones had died that did it for me. They also said that the mother wasn't a teacher, but an aide. And that the killer was "moody" - maybe he disliked the fact that his Mom was taking care of other kids. Who knows. I just hope when he died he felt the pain of the 100 bullets he blasted into each and every person.
I worked in an ER for several years.....every time we had an auto accident or some other horrible case come in, I would have to get the details for the office......many times I have gone to the local tavern (they had a drive up window) and get something to drink before I was able to go home.
I think Doren's comment is on the money then. Why can't we stop spending money on destroying countries and rebuilding them and spend the money here on our mentally ill, homeless, poor, and out of work

I think kids do need to hear about this, and they need to hear about it at home. If no one at home says anything, and they hear about it at school, that creates another problem.

They praised the teachers for what they did to keep the kids safe. I went through the 50's where we all crawled under desks in case of war. They have here metal detectors at the schools for guns and knives, some of the worse schools have armed police at the school, and a lot of the schools here lock the doors at 9:00. That's why they can't figure out how the guy got in.
cause his mother worked there. they would let him in. and they don't lock their doors until 9;30 -- ours are locked all day!

i heard on the news about one of the teachers leading kids into a bathroom and locking the door and getting them to be quiet
I would imagine that elementary school kids all across the country are going to hear about this in school on Monday. The schools are going to want to address any questions or fears kids have about this happening to kids their age.
yes, all schools have "lockdown" drills, shooter on the premises, lock the doors, draw the blinds, sit on the floor in silence and dont open the doors for anyone until the police/principal open up

In 1982 Tylenol accidently killed 7 people and forever changed FDA regulations. How many people have died over the past 18 months from mass shootings and we still can't pass stricter gun laws? I tried looking on the NRA website for the "What To Do When Someone Opens Fire In Your School" pamphlet to help discuss this with my children and I just can't seem to locate it.

There is not much you can say. Other than we love you/care about you, we are doing everything we can to keep you safe and we want you to come to us with any questions or fears. Seems like small potatoes compared to the fears that this kind of thing will conjure.
I recommend everyone find their local politician that has taken NRA money and send them a message. You can find that list on a site called opensecrets.org, hover on Influence and Lobbying, click on Interest Groups and type in NRA in the search box. It will bring up a complete list of all politicians who have taken NRA $. They deserve a call and a letter.

Unfortunately, access to guns is only half the problem. The other half are the people who use them for horrible things like this.

Because the NRA is so large its difficult to pass legislation against them. That and the Second Amendment to the Constitution that gives the Right to Bear Arms.

Try telling that to the NRA. A revolver for home defense is one thing. An assault rifle is unneccessary outside of the military and law enforcement.

yes i saw and read your profile. i wish that particular right, the right to carry a firearm, could be revoked somehow.there have been too many tragedies.
One of my friends has a niece who goes to that district, but fortunately, she was in a different building. However, she and so many other children will still be effected by tragedy
