My rule (proposed, never seconded or adopted, as far as I know) is that the asker of clues should sit on their hands until a clue is given. It could lead to difficulties if there aren't many cluers around, though......
and if no-one ever asks could also prove difficult - unless people just put random clues in without being asked - which is a no-no too!
i don't normally ask until i am absolutely desperate, which is part of the problem, because if you leave it til you think you have exhausted the options there's a greater risk the penny will drop before someone replies.
