His first word was very early--7 1/2 months--but then he was late with the rest. When he was 1 1/2 he only said mama, daddy and doggie. Then very recently it just TOOK off. Now he says stuff like, "Mama get more apple juice out", and he talked the other day about getting the cast off his broken leg (Mama me go get bus, no more owie). They say late talking and suden verbosity is normal in bilingial kids.

no. i accompanied my dad to his 55th reunion at Purdue Univ. I was born here in Lafayette.

it is - i've never been to a university town - i went to Univ of Cincinnati, but that's an urban campus, which is completely different. As it happens, I also have a connection from my mom's side of the family. The local synagogue, Sons of Abraham was founded in 1889by my great-great grandfather, among others. The family name is even on two of the stained glass windows. alas, the congregation has diminished to 40 families.
my mom grew up in a small city in southern louisiana and names of my relatives are on two of the stained glass windows in the synagogue there as well
i'm not sure how many families belong to that synagogue, but it is dwindling too
that is a common story in small town America. kids grow up & move away.

well, we went to an Indian restaurant - my dad didn't care for the food. He said to the waither "this is bad." well, OK, he didn't like it. i paid the bill, and my dad shooed me away saying he'd catch up with me. i overheard him say to the waiter, "you look like bums. you aren't professional" well, i was mortified. he felt there shirts were dirty, but to call them bums? am i wrong? it was the end of a long day. my dad is quite the critic, and i just lost it.
did i tell u i'm blonde....nothing is easy...lol

there's a part of me that feels very guilty to ever criticize a parent, though, especially as my dad is approaching 80.

mom died just over 2 years ago. it was a traumatic time; my mom & baby sister both had recurrence of cancer - my baby sister died at 37 just as my mom found out her cancer had come back.
wow. that must have been beyond difficult.
oh melon, that is just so sad, awful
actually this trip was a good thing. we were supposed to make a trip to Purdue last fall, and my dad just couldn't do it - he said he didn't wwant to travel without mom. She also reined him in a bit.
my mom has had cancer three times but she's still kicking.

PIng, I hope your mom has nothing but good days & years ahead. My mom was heoic. One day I had a panic attack & a migraine over her illness. i told her, then regretted burdening her with my troubles. "Oh, no," said mom."You take care of me & I take care of you. We take care of each other." In other words, she was not about to give up being my mom. I'll carry that as a lesson forever.
