page....or other's like him. There are ways to learn to lower your blood pressure without medication, or along with medication until you can lower it....there is actually a little home biofeedback machine, not terribly expensive, to learn to slow things down.
haven't use it, but have done similar things.

And you also might want to check out Herbert Benson's work-he's at harvard and is the one who coined the relaxationr response. i know the feelieng abotu not wanting to be on more meds which then create more problems. Unfortunately sometiems the meds are necessary, or at least temporarily, but the alternative is really taking hold of a practice....takes a lot more discipline and motivation than taking a pill and we aren't support in any of that in this culture.

Also, you might want to go to the library and take out "Full Catastrophe Living" by Jon Kabat-Zinn. He is the founder and director of the University of Massachusetts Stress Reduction Center. They've been around for a while and work with people with chronic pain, illness, stress, and there are tapes which come with the book and it is extremely user friendly.

I am sitting on the heated couch, this is due to the misplacing of the heating vent that now heats the whole couch and room
that's exactly how I'm working it Sprite. Have given in to some medications for the moment, but have lost 25 pounds, am walking 2 miles a day, have brought my blood sugar back from the brink of diabetic to completely normal. Some of the heart stuff, though, is also genetic, and with the estrogenic protection now dwindling there may not be much I can do about it...but I'm trying all kinds of nutritional stuff and will keep increasing exercise, so we'll see. At least if I end up on the medications I'll know that I did everything else in my power to make things better.

wow Eva, way to go! Wish I could do the walking thing, and losing weight has been a problem ever since I became handicapped, but I will try.
My doc is a man that holistictly treats you. Say you are overweight and have medical conditions he will team you up with a dietican to help you out
Sprite have you tried swimming, its a fab way to loose weight and be supported fully?
been there, done that... dieticians said I eat too little as it is and that the only way to loose weight would be either medication (yay - no way) or lots of exercise (impossible).

swimming isn't the problem, but getting in and out the water is... and dressing/undressing without a good chair.
mmm, dont the pools have the chair lift thingie that can get you into the pool?
I love swimming though... might try again and see if there is a place where I could have a chair and where there are steps in the water that I could manage...

I have struggled with weight most of my life too, and still am, but I guess that at 57 the reality that I don;t have time to do this to myself anymore, and will end up on a whole host of meds and side effects, scared me into some changes. I don't know what your handicap is, and of course you are the only one who can know what is possible and what not, but there are always ways...not necessarily to do things perfectly, or to be like anyone else, but to take hold of our health as best we can, and feel some growing confidence in getting healtheir. If you love swimming, and it is important enough to you, then there will be ways to make it enough of a prioirity to arrange things as you need them, or get the help you need to make it doable.
i know all our pools have to be complient to the disability act. this means all pools have to have a chair lift thingie, a ramp which has bars or steps into the pool, there has to be at least one entrance that is for the not so mobile

I have fibromylagia and arthritis and have had endless run ins with people pushign exercise regimens which were not right for me. And also of being overly ambitious and hurting myself, and comparing myself to what i used to be able to do, etc. I am slowly but surely learning to be a bit wiser and more patient, and tailor things to what I really need.
I had to investigate this problem when i trashed my knee, i dont know what your abiltys are Sprite but never take NO for an answer

For instance, several times I have begun using the "Strong Women Stay Young Program". it is a home weight lifting program which was invented at Tufts University and has had tones of research...especially used with elderly frail people., It does all kinds of wonderful things, including protecting against osteoperosis. You start with very light weight and then keep increasing. Well, every time I increased beyond a certain point i would hurt myself and end up not being able to do it for weeks and then give up. The physical therapist I am seeing now said what is pretty obvious , which is to just stick with the lighter level, not give in to my macho side, because the lighter level is still strengthening and giving me all kinds of good stuff. DUH.

I even went to several sportschools and followed programs there... and competed with myself every time... and was stimulated to do so by the teachers there as well. Now I am with a physiotherapist and she says to keep it simple, easy and light, and it will do the most good without damaging anything further.

I know. Competition with others is not such a big issue, but with where i used to be, is too often in my head. reaaly dumb! Comparison is never healthy and I'm never going to be 30, or 40 again. And I may always have to deal with a fair amount of pain. But I can still be a lot healthier, and more relaxed, and have a good life.

well, that is something I want to aim for too. Pain has been with me for over 10 years nonstop now, so I am relatively used to that. Now to lower my expectations and relax in what is possible, and be as healthy as I can be given the circumstances... that would be a worthwhile goal.

Sounds like a great field to volunteer in. You can also bet, as an extra, that you may get permanent employment from it - seems that always happens to people when they show what they are worth. I hope that happens to you even though it isn't your primary/main aim.

Not as such but this place helps with filling out forms and finding good doctors and can intercede with back bill problems and the like... if you need any kind of info or a letter written or something just contact the place. I'm there every Monday and Friday, but everyone's really nice. Also there might be support groups, moederkrings, that sort of thing that they might know about... or f you need thuishulp and they won't give it to you we could maybe help... I'll get the URL and post it in a sec. But definietly do let me help with the kids sometimes! I have sumemr break coming up...

It's a stem, Eva, with big inedible leaves (poisonous). It is very tart, needs to be combined with something sweet like strawberries, usually needs lots of sugar
Rhubarb tastes only of itself, you can't equate it with anything else. Lots of sugar helps the tartness.

mulch the soil around the remaining roses, bunny, it keeps the spores from splashing back up on the leaves. Try a light baking soda solution. Spray it on the leaves. black spot is fungal, and messing with the pH of the leaves can often discourage it!
