Katie, have you looked at the things they do now instead of tiles? Kind of board with all sorts of finishes.
There's a proper name for it, but I can't remember it - anyway, possibly dearer than tiles to begin with but it has the advantage of not needing grout and being very easy to keep clean.
We were just going to go for those massive tiles you can get on the basis that the walls will not be straight enough for anything else, everything in this house is awful when you start doing it. Probably find that there is nothing behind the tiles and the walls have rotted

Yes, huge sheets of things that come with different finishes, they're made watertight with stainless steel fittings etc.
it came in lots of bathroom type finishes. we have a sort of marble effect and I love it
We have decided that this is our home for life (well for a very long time) so we are doing things right. we have long conversations on whether to extend or put a conservatory on it or just fit a new kitchen in the existing space

I think you're wise, Katie, to put as much as you can afford into doing up the house properly. It's like anything else, you could blow the budget on a few things, or you could do a shoddy job for less but not have it last. The middle ground seems to work for us.

She is sweet. She's Spangle, a 9 year-old Welsh Springer Spaniel.
Just finished watching the Westminster Dog Show earlier this week. A spaniel swept the competitions -- but a really stuck-up spaniel, not at all Spangle-ish.
A spaniel with a nose in the air? They're usually frantically working with their nose to the ground, trying to get as much smell into their noses as possible. I must google to see what sort of spaniel it was.
Whoops! I take it back -- it was a Scottish terrier. Now I feel dog-gone stupid.

I think most dogs -- with the exception of those bred for nastiness (shame!) -- are attractive and meant to be. Like babies. But then there aren't too many babies bred for fighting. Turns out the Italian painist sat next to Mrs MCcomb at a luncheon in Glens FAllls. They have him my email and now we are corresponding by email. That was not an option in the late 80's

There is a Friday women's "interclub" tennis league here that includes a team from Canada--outside of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and they got some US women interested in curling. Of course the main focus = beer consumption.
ahhh so it was meeting canadians. I just can not imagine any 8 yr old here saying they wanted to do curling...
the ski jumpers and the snow boarders are amazing
I quit the tennis league--too intense + competitive for me.
I like all of the events that I could see myself doing---not ski jumping or figure skating.

it was a productive day, AND I managed to get outside for about 20 minutes in the garden (if I had been out longer I would have done too much and gotten hurt).

But I didn't write or edit my paper since I didn't sleep much last night.

at McGill in residence we had 2 guppies, called Amyloidosis and Blastomycosis (names courtesy of a med student) and they both promplty died.

We are very very fortunate and retired very early in life but I remember where I came from as a single mother living on welfare paycheck-to-paycheck...washing clothes in my bathtub etc...even though I worked for the federal government...no child support from abusive ex-husband...it was hard but I made it and will never forget how to be frugal in times you need to be. I am a better woman for it!

yes..my husband has a very good outlook on life and he says he isn't going anywhere till he says so...in the last 3 years we have had a major scare with his health each year...but have made it through each one
he turned 50 and fell apart on me ...but we keep patching him up and keep him going :)
