with the last word the re was the first two letters and the 6 ws the number of letters in the word and the 27 was the point value.
4 letter words are face value 5 letter words the total points divided by 2 6 letter words totals are divided by 3, etc.

yes, I agree. Youngest son's girlfriend is an English major at the university and is the proof reader for the school newspaper and she tells stories of how people turn in their stories with incorrect english and the spelling is awful

The tile stats mirror the grid. Where you see the top left e saying 0/4, it means you need to find 4 words beginning with e coming from that tile. As you fill in words, the tile stats reflect what you've found.

Too many shortcuts used ... you start to get confused about how things are really spelled! Also, I notice a lot of mixing of words that sound alike, but are spelled differently, being used interchangeably.
mongie, to an extent you can blame the internet, but to be honest, I think it has more to do with children not being taught properly in the first place. My daughter is a teacher and they are told NOT to correct every mistake - so children don't always realise when they've got things wrong.

boy do I agree there - my kids schools let them take tests over and over to get a better score instead of making them study ahead of time
back in the early 90's the Commonwealth started a "write to read" program where the students were allowed to spell the words the way they sounded and the teachers were not allowed to mark the words wrong.

Parents must also be actively involved. We are not permitted to drop them off for meetings, not to mention your child is raising 300# pigs or steers...

The nice thing, I think, is that the art director didn't necisarially want them all to face the same way, or have the same pose or anything, so I was ale to keep shooting as they were moving, and got a variety of "poses"

Angelsong...addictive disease can be helped there are many good organizations to help both you and your daughter, Al-Anon, AA and NA to name a few...your county offices will be a good place to start...I know your heartbreak all too well...my son struggled with addictive disease and had to hit bottom it almost killed me and him also and he almost lost his beautiful family...he is coming up on 3 years clean and sober and has since repaired his family and had a set of twins last June, he was recently promoted in his job to foreman and is again the wonderful person we all love...he helps others through a position he holds in an AA group...I couldn't be prouder of him but it is a lifelong thing like any other disease be it diabetes, weight, or whatever...I will pray for you and your daughter.

hello again all. I wandered by then got distracted by homework. Time for a break...

it's going LBD, feeling pushed for time -- was sick last night so didn't get ANY homework done, then spent time with Mother this afternoon.

the grid is pretty friendly. Feather flew through it in no time. I'm doing well. nothing exciting on this side of the screen
i bet the time with Stidgmere was nice. sometimes you just have to take the time for yourself. the homework will still be there, and maybe you'll be more inspired.
it was lovely, LBD. went to a workshop after class (conflict resolution) -- and so had time to debrief with her.
good workshop, especially for future teachers!
I am still frustrated that I am not getting clear answers to the question on how to work with bully to identify issues that may be underlying the behaviors while keeping the students who are bullied safe... I know it isn't appropriate to tell a kid who's being beaten up to just knock someone's block off, but there has to be some way for self defense in the absence of constant adult supervision.

There are no clear answers as to why someone is a bully. Sometimes it's just a power play. Other times it could be low self image or perhaps abuse from another source.

right. So we need to address the bully's issues. I get that. But the current trend is to punish, just as severely, a student who is pushed so hard they hit back. What are the recourses? I know that bullies are often sly about when, who and where they bully.
Punishing the victim? that's stupid! Self defense is just that. defending oneself. Punishment shouldn't be doled out just because you got caught! errr, that didn't come out right
LOL YES! that's the problem I am having. It's that "zero-tolerance" piece that schools are going to.
It doesn't make sense. Though I think there are degrees -- self-defense in the moment vs. coming to school weeks or months later to make up for a series of insults and harm
(Hi all -- just jumping in for a moment) Stid, I often think we don't do enough to empower the victims. Kids who are bullied often feel adults won't do anything if they speak up (not to mention the fear of reprisals from the bully.) I like some of the programs I am hearing about in schools, that are developing a 'culture' of anti-bullying.
i can understand the theory behind zero tolerance, but i don't think it works well in this situation.

I don't remember a lot of bullying growing up. maybe it was because, if any of our parents found out, we'd have all heck to pay!
Teaching Tolerance has something, LBD. A common piece that I (anecdotally) have noticed is that the programs begin with an invitation to the students to develop empathy; and then teaches some specific skills for communication and problem solving. There are generally school-wide norms established with clear boundaries set.
Special Ed kids get bullied a lot. My Special O athletes all have horrible stories.
today is Stop the R Word day. Kids sign a pledge not to use the word "retard"
That is a good point, LBD; did a reality check with the younger son who is in the same grade as the class I am helping in once a week. Difference is our small K-8 school with mostly kids from this peninsular community vs. a large 8-9 school that pulls from several districts.

I know that it happens, and I know the Special Ed kids get a lot of it. people who are different from the norm get it. I just don't remember being allowed to be bullied or to bully.
I got beat up a time or two... so did my brother. We were on the receiving end, but that was in the city schools. When we moved home to Washington there was less of the physical stuff.
I read about stop the R word. I think that's fantastic! if people would actually look up the word they might realize that the one using the word is the retarded person, for slowing down someone elses progress.

I grew up in the city. in a pretty rough neck of the woods, too. and maybe it was because my siblings before me cut a wide path for me to tread. It also probably didn't hurt to have a foster brother in a cop uniform

Bullies are people who know how to channel their anger and insecurity into actions that allow them to feel superior to others. Victims are people who have conditioned to feel that they are inferior to "action" type people. Victims need to be convinced that they have just as much power as other people - they just need to learn how to use their power ..
hello tor (((hugs))) I am glad you brought that up. I try so hard to use the term "bully" and "person who has been bullied" to reframe the situation so a person knows things can change... "victim" doesn't have to be part of the identity!
I suppose the smart thing would be to say "person who has bullied" for the same reason!

I walked in and the familiar musty smell hit me and to theleft I saw the day room my Dad was once send to, reaching the first landing, I was near the place my daughter once had to attend, bypassing her Grandad on the way. My chest tightened and I wasn't sure I coulld do it. Anyway, I led Beloved and Step to the waiting room and we got called into the same room as I was in a decade ago and with the same woman.

What happened 10 years ago?
Jilli both my Dad and my daughter were in the place. Dad in the mad stages of Altheimer's disease and my daughter with anorexia nervosa, that kept her in a clinic for 2 years. Dad died just before she was released.

Anyway, like I said, if I've not taken much in for a couple of days, that's the reason why.

I didn't really feel that brave, jilli, but I knew I was needed.
Thing was, since I'd been through it before and it wasn't my own child this time, I felt stronger. I had said that I wanted no part in this therapy, since it doesn't directly concern me other than being the female carer this time. I'll see how things go, and I will participate if needed, I now think.

Wouldn't it be a hoot if we knew each other...stranger things have happened to me. We took a trip in our motorhome across country and we had parked in a wal-mart for a little concrete camping...I stepped out and low and behold beside us was my brothers best friend in his motorhome...now that's a really wild thing!
