I will go to sleep around 10, as usual, then the ski resort across the valley will set off their celebratory fireworks and I will wake up to BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, await the big finale, and go back to sleep.
I like the reminder that we can renew our lives. The feeling that new things can happen if we make them. But otherwise... no, it is not a real holiday for me either.
I set goals all of the time, and I see my birthday as more of a milestone, not a new calendar.

my husband went deaf almost immediately after we married

well the deafness was tearing us apart between the stress and the inability to communicate
also gratitude comes from an optomistic attitude to life, and how can you be optimistic when you are depressed?
we joined a couple support group--but it looked like we weren't going to make it
oh, jmc...must have been so trying for both of you
then what happened?
when one month at the support group they had an exercise in which we were to turn to each other and and finish the sentence "I appreciated you today for. . . "

we learned that we were often surprised by what the other appreciated and what the other gave as a gift

sometime one of us would do something as a gift that plain irritated the other one and when we began to see it as a gift our attitudes changed

for example, when i was sick my hubby would bring me tea with lemon and honey which I hate

we did this every night from then on until the week he died

this provides a little more in communication but remembering these things are done out of love is critical
