the volunteering has been absolutly fantastic, Aussie Pride. Couple of truck drivers in Tasmania have been collecting goods,clothes, toys AND pet food and will be catching the ferry across to Victoria to drive to Queensland....people have even donated for the deisel and food for the journey.

Indeed, diz, after 9/11. I was actually out of the country for Katrina. But there are still church teams and what not going to the Katrina Area to work on homes. They are lucky...After several episodes of floodin in NC, several towns were simply abandonded.

my husband is buying a treadmill and I hope he uses it. He used to be a runner, too, and then a walker. But since the dog attack, he is afraid to walk, even in our village

The usual horror insurance stories but the cleanup seems to be progressing well where it can be Annie. We are having flooding down here now - but in country towns so nowhere near as bad as Queensland where a lot of the areas were built up
yes, there will be horror stories to be sure..are you affected in any way, I hope not.
It is horrible to see so much flooding going on ..but i think the worst part must be when the water goes and the clean-up begins..must be awefull to go through it.

I just put the finishing touches on a huge pot au feu which my husband requested. I've never made it before but it needs to cook for another 2 hours

pot au feu is boiled beef and vegetables: onion, leek, turnips, carrots, parsnip, potatoes

my couscous had lamb, chicken plus many veggies - made in the Algerian style
beef and winter veggie stew
and cabbage at the end of the pot au feu, and served with horseradish (although the French serve it with mustard)
I think it's thyme, bay leaf, parsley and celery, but I might be wrong
ahh... a spice bag...herb bag..alright
it's funny that I've never made it before, but we had it in a resto, and husband loved it
bouquet garni is lots of herbs tied inside like a bayleaf and put it into stocks etc.
my kids would turn up their noses...
I didn't have a bag, so I put the thyme in a tea ball
that works..i have also put in a coffee filter

I should have used a sock, zzoozz's note made me think of it, but it's too late
and tied that up with unflav dental floss ( you put the floss in your mouth..soo..must be ok to go in a stew )

i usually turf the herbs in ..i like little green things in my stews
not the unwaxed version that i buy :)
I mostly microwave foods.
for the couscous I didn't have cheesecloth either as it's hard to find it here so I cut up an old linen napkin to put between the stew and the steamer
aaah, but you work (a lot) scrabbler, and I'm retired!
I rarely use a spice bag, I just add the spices to whatever I'm making without the bag.

I don't like spending time on cooking. Big projects for me are veggie chili, stew, roasted veggies, pasta casseroles.

We were in NH skiing. My Mother in law was at our condo babysitting for our 2 year old. She called my father in law and told him she didn't feel right and asked him to come home. By the time he got there she had died of a heart attack. My 2 year old was alone with her for about 1/2 hour before he got home. Her funeral was today.
She was 65 years old.

Thank God I only put 8-day old remnants of sliced roast beef out for the foxes last night. At least I won't be wandering around the lawn picking up pieces of shattered cooked chicken bone, like I was earlier, so the cat doesn't get them. Why can't they take the chicken casserole remains away, rather than having a party on or grass with them?
Oh! I know why! It's fox mating season in the UK and so they are playing silly beggars.
We had a drainpipe yesterday not working (lots of rain in the night, ditches overflowing) and found a rabbit had gotten in. Not good.

Last time we had a drain pipe not working from above there was a tennis ball blocking the top of it.
Not in the house. The drainpipe from the roof connects with drainpipes from the road which eventually runs into the sound.
Last time one was not working from below, it was due to wet leaves, silt and a very bloated drowned mouse in the drain below the cover. YUCK! It exploded when I scopped it out of the water.
Finally done with the P's!! WOOT! (I've been stuck on them forever!)

A tennis ball would be easier to get out than a rabbit which was more like the mouse you are describing.

i once had a blocked downspout that was full of leaves at the bottom -- could hear a bird fluttering inside and madly clawed the leaves out . . . and the bird flew away WHEW!!

Stidge - you must forgive him for being strangely green. Things that have died in water lose most of their hair, bloat and tend to, erm, explode, if you're not very, very careful about how you scoop them out.
They also smell awful once they hit the air.

Not as bad as sheep who are killed by maggot infestations and keel over and die, but, the two mice who died in my greenhouse - the first drowned in the watering can and I guess the other fell in trying to save it, stank the whol garden out for half a day after I got them out, and even after I buried them. I now put covers over the openings in the watering cans in my greenhouse.
