Maybe for you, flosey, but I'd have to look for a recipe, gather the ingredients, do the measuring, put them out on a baking sheet, clean up the mess, and wait for them to cook, then take them out to cool...but I bet yours are delicious

funny dictionary this one - we in the UK have a word - gurn - which means to distort the face for comic effect - and yet it's not in the dictionary on here! ho hum!!
It would accept girn, though, which means the same thing.

My inclination would be to spell it gurn as well, but the dictionary thinks differently, unfortunately.
I know what you mean - there are lots of Oz words that are not accepted (eg. rort, roos). I think for an international babble there should be more leeway for acceptable words.
oh well - im having enough trouble with this grid as it is! hour and half and still only got 56 words!!! and as for the G - well I cant see any of them!!
You just have to accept the limitations of any one dictionary and remember that it's a game, I think.

I send out the overdue letters for my company. I find that if you suggest you are about to turn them over to collections, they are motivated to work out a payment plan. The ones who aren't are going to end up in collections anyway.

Jes, if your deal with your collections people is that you only get 60%, try offering the customer a 25% reduction to pay off their bill. That way, you are making out better than turning them over.
my hubby was made redundant after 18 years 2 years ago. we managed...just.our mortgage was paid and our bills in full but we really struggled, there are people alot worse than us(at first we had his redundancy money to help but you get no help from the government if you get so much!)

guess for a next warning, i can use the trick the receptionist at a place i used to work did... have 'typo' in the amount owed that we say we are sending to the collections agency--people call REALLY pissed when you put an extra digit in the total. She could almost always get a payment from them after apologizing for the error and promising to fix it!

when i first got bad i had hardly any money coming in and owed money, not rent as i got it payed but couldn't affors to feed myself bas the money i had left over weny on my cats! it was my choice to have them do i had to look after them. my best friend would buy extra food for me and i ws so embarressed and proud that i wouldn't accept it, but she would put it in my cupboards when i was out, so i know how hard it is!

It was a tricky time all right, Lilliann. Emotionally and financially. For the record, himself never came back. Last heard of in Bangkok. (He is now 55 - now THATS what I call a mid-life crisis). But the kids are still finding it difficult... :-(

They were 12, 15 & 16 when he vamoosed - difficult ages at the best of times. But they great kids, and are weathering the storm. They can never be accused of being spoilt kids!!
i didn't get more animals, i already had 1 rescue cat and then my brother went to fight in iraq so i had his so i couldn't give them up as they'd had a crap life already, so my billes got paid, i contacted all the places i owed, as in credit card, gas/electric and paid so much every month, anfd i went without, not totally but really struggled, but we had a roof over our head and warmth!
yes, I'm not saying these people should ditch all their animals, lilli--i'm just saying that in this situation, you did not go out and bring home 3 new dogs. or breed the one you had. This woman did exactly that, on both counts. Meanwhile, she's convincing local rescues to pay some of her bills.

You do have to be 21 Lilliann. But when I was in college the legal drinking age was 18. They have raised it since then.
and it used to vary by state - I grew up in New Jersey where the drinking age was always 21, but New York used to be 18. Lots of kids would drive to New York, get drunk, then try to drive home, with predictable consequences.

depends on the state, actually. in wa, if there is a separate area for "the bar" you can have kids in the building, and even serve alcohol to the tables where the kids are, but kids aren't allowed in the "bar" area.
hubby and i would love to get a winniebago and tour the U.S but have a 11 yr old so need to go to places we could take her or we wait another 5/6 years and do it on our own
so, for instance, we have a bar and grill in town that has a "bar" that is just a half dozen stools at the counter, separated by a rail from the tables. and kids aren't supposed to be between the rail and the counter.

we do have pubs the same in the uk where you can take children into one part and only adults in the other or pubs that won't have children at all

Oh Jac, don't get me wrong. I think a love of language helps in writing. But if it gets to the point where I come across as arrogant because I am using too many words that are "above" my audience, I will lose them. And that is not the point of why I write.
I was a bit shocked last year when I watched a programme on TV about Scrabble Championships. They all use weird and wonderful, and sometimes long words, but not many of them know what the words mean. They just see each formation of letters as a maths, as a score. That, to me, is unacceptable.
way back in the early 80's, I was working in ICU and a patient had an NG tube in (to keep her stomach empty ), and ET tube in (for breathing) a foley cath (for urine) and numerous central lines (IV's and an arterial line in to give her fluids and measureher heart and lung pressures. The Docs kept telling her family about these things; but the family had no clue about any of it and the Docs didn't "get" that. Finally the family asked me if all the tubes would get tangle up in her and tied in a knot

I am calling Martin Amies arrogant, though! Also Sebastian Foulks, who made that programme about heroes in novels. He ended by saying that the last literary hero was Jim Dixon, from father of Martin, Kinglsey Amis' novel, 'Lucky Jim'. He then concluded, like it was FACT, that there would never ever be another literary hero. As far as he is concerned, the only hero in a book around now is in a children's book and that hero is Harry Potter. I won't tell you what I shouted at the TV because it's not fit for a family site.

I don't see why you can't work it both ways as a writer - you can use big words, or your knowledge of Latin etc., to make up new words. You can use your knowledge of history to make fun of history. People who choose to read books are not so stupid that they won't see what you're getting at with your simpler way of saying it. If they are that interested, they will look it up anyway.

we have seen the newer version a couple of times, thought it was worth seeing the original. So often the originals are "fresher" than remakes, I find. But the remake in this case was pretty good.
So far nobody is here for the dance yet, hopefully they are all home primping :-)
