reading back in the garden/deer issue..when we used to live further north we used to have issues with the moose,deer and rabbits.what we used to do was plant 2 gardens.one for us with fence posts and chicken wire surrounding, and way on the other side of the property a second garden full of nice leafy lettuce for the wildlife
and in season,this set up helped fill the freezer for the winter:)
drop one moose in october and spend the entire month canning the veggies,put about 500 pounds of taters in cold storage and you are ready for winter.had ten laying hens so all you need the store for is a few hundred pounds of flour and some brick yeast for bread and stock in a few cases of whiskey;)
then just go to town once a month from dec to april

the deer around here eat everything -- they chomped my begonias to the ground last year.
