heat stroke is no joke; I think the idea of going to class and walking is a good one. that way you are still getting some exercise but not putting yourself at as much risk (but do be sure to take your water bottle and keep yourself hydrated!)

Good question, Molly! I think he's getting a lot closer. They've been going out for 3-4 years now, and he's 21 (she's 19) so they are still pretty young. Apparently when not insane she is smart and interesting.
I also think they have a lot of the usual abusive relationship things going on (and he is too young and too involved to recognize it) - she goes nuts, then apologies, gets all sweet, promises things will be better, they are better for a little while, then the cycle goes again.
Then she convinces him that he's the one with the problem (since she is able to get him out of control), and he is afraid that if he does anything she will retaliate.
Sue, I assume you have casually brought up with your son the cycle of abuse? I would recommend it... used to work (in another life) in a domestic violence survivor office, and distributed info to people. Men often don't realize that DV also happens to them and that it is just as deadly -- and not a sign of weakness to seek assistance.
thx, stid, I have talked to him about it a little although I think it might be more effective coming from someone who hadn't given birth to him (if you know what I mean) - my partner used to be a reporter and is also familar with the patterns.

I work with someone who has two kids 20 and 18. They have both sat around the past two summers, not working.
My kids had summer jobs from the time they were old enough to get a work permit.

I don't think my son has a job this summer (although he is taking summer classes), but he does have one during the semester.
we don't live close enough to town for those kinds of summer jobs, but the boys have never had a "free summer" -- between our 1 acre and their grandparents... and last summer the elder worked on a local small farm.
And jobs are hard to find now; unemployment among youth is much higher even than among older people.
the younger does plays all summer for the last four summers, so he is fully occupied (and happy), next year he ages out of that program and will look for work or attend summer sessions at the community college or vocational school.

thanks Molly -- I am hopeful eventually this will make sense to them. I worked my way through college and it was hard (and I was for a time extremely thin -- my landlady started feeding me!) but it taught me why I should go to college and get a good job.
