when she had a baby she had amahs and others to help out. I didn't.
oh I heard a story once about that, so true to li4! About a woman who gets her sister to stay for a while, and cleans the whole house. Then sister comes and they have a good time, until Mother calls and says she comes over tomorrow to visit them. The woman tells her sister: "You must help, we must clean the house!" Sister says: "Darling, you did that just before I came, it is still clean!" Then the woman tells her sister: "For you, it had to be sister-clean! Now it must be mother-clean!" And the sister nods and grabs a mop.

Yes, I really did keep things tidy otherwise -- even the diapers (cloth ones in those days) were neatly folded and piled.

jeez jilli, something we cannot imagine anymore these days. Must have taken a lot of time and energy. I did have a soaking bucket for the diapers, but I was lucky enough we could wash them in the machine.
hung them out to dry and then a train would pass by in the nearby ravine and spew soot on them
so I had to wash them again -- three rinses was the order of the day too.
dear poppa came to my rescue, bought a washer for Gordon (so we wouldn't feel embarrassed)
argh! That would make me fit to eat metal and spit nails.

Mum finally did come across too and bought us a washing machine -- a front-loading Westinghouse. Front-loaders are all the rage now again!

yes, we have a frontloader as well. I kind of miss my top loader though. It was a combination, a washing machine and a seperate ... centrifuge? Swirler? Don't know the english word. It took a bit more work but the wash came out drier and the mechanism was much stronger.
The one I left behind when I moved was a good one -- a GE top-loader, with an extra "mini-basket" for small loads -- economical.
It was too old to move, they told me. The one I have ow is a top-loader, 15 years old.
I had to buy stackables, laundry room is small
yes, that is a big advantage of the frontloaders. I have a very old drier on top of mine too. I try to use it as little as possible, but it is great to have one.

ah that is a shame. My family is actually pretty big too, but it is like loose sand. Dry sand.
And of course I lived in different places. My favourite cousin was in England but he died years ago. Then I was fairly close to two in NY when we lived there but tey're gone now too.

yes, it is - when my husband was in hospital (before my kids were old enough to drive) I never once had to ask for a lift in the 6 weeks he was there, I don't drive and the hospital is an hours bus ride away.

It's an American rather than British expression.
That's weird, I thought it was just the opposite.
I'm familiar with it but we tend to decorate rather than tr4.
Either way, I thought it was fairly common due to the media. What do I know.
and when you have a sailboat on a good tack,it is in good tr4;)
and when you have that good suit on,you look all tr4 and proper ;)
i rememberd it once i got the other clue but we don't really use the term for trees

crossy discovered a great qay to cut back on salt intake as my dr and my wife were giving me the evil eye...just go out and get a salt mill/grinder with a fine grind,and a box of coarse or sea salt.just doing that has cut down my salt intake over 75%
