I just got back from visiting my Mom. It's so difficult when they are very old and very set in their ways.

She's 87 and lives in assisted living. She's on the highest care level. But, yet, she keeps falling and hurting herself. I want to get someone in her apartment to be with her all the time and she refuses.
Everyone I know has been through this

Mom has cancer and is receiving hospice care. But it's not all the time care.
The aides help her with her daily are and check on her. Sometimes she barricaded the door
Frank's dad was the same way, bichon, and came to a not very nice end (had fallen and wasn't found for a couple of days; he survived but never made it out of the hospital)
I don't care how old you are; the loss of a mother is bad at any age. It always leaves a hole in your heart . A nurse friend of mine's mother died at 104 years old and my friend was in her mid-80's. She totally agreed with me; saying that losing her dad wasn't near as bad as when her mother died
she fractured her humerus last April. They couldn't do surgery because of her heart and lungs so she was in a cast for 3 months. You would think she wouldn't want that to happen again
bichon, this choice was something my mom struggled with..and to be honest..still does. She worried that my grandmother was upset with being placed in a care facility, that she was still mad at Mom when she passed, that maybe she would have been ok staying in her home,etc.

My daughter is afraid to visit her because last time she spoke to her she threatened to call the police if she tried to move her.
The truth is, as much as my grandma fought it, it allowed her extra time. Because I'm sure she would not have been able to live safely on her on any longer. And, from the outside looking in, worrying about her safety constantly was having a negative impact on mom's life..Grandma, had she been healthy, NEVER would have wanted to be a burdern or interfere with mom having a full life

oh bichon, I just went through some of that stuff with my dad. It really is easier if the parents wants to move to a care facility, but if your mom isn't safe where she's at, she needs to have things done for her. Find a nice assistive living center and let her visit it.

OK, this has been a REALLY sucky week (and it's only Tuesday!) One of my colleagues, a retired philosophy professor, died over the weekend (he's all of 4 years older than I am); another colleague's son is dying of cancer and will be coming home for the last time at the end of the week (he's about the same age as my son); another colleague's father just died (after a long illness); and the daughter of one of the secretaries just died very suddenly. None of these affect me directly, but they do add up.
Wow Sue, that is a lot at once. I'm very sorry these people who are in your circle have experienced such difficulty.
Also, it's the 39th anniversary of my mother's death.

it can be hard indeed sue.death is hard and i have faced it many times.my own mother passed overseas from cancer and due to bullshit paperwork and govt rules on both sides of the pond,we did not know it till she had been in the ground already for 2 days she passed in 1991,20 years this month.all we can do is remember the person we loved and to speak of them with a smile and fondness or love in our hearts and in that way give them a bit of immortality((sue))

a unknown public school teacher taught me to read. i cannot really see her face in my mind,but just her hands,her body shape and hear her voice.the essence of her.i remember the patience,sounding out the words,going back over a line of text again and again,all with the same patience.then one day it just clicked,almost like i have trying to use an out of focus camera and she leaned over and gave the zoom lens the perfect adjustment.hehe was no stopping me then.i had my nose in a book non stop from the time i was 7 till..well till now as i still have my nose in books.i rember the first time i went to the centre of the earth on the end of jules vernes pen,the time i did not even sleep for 2 days as i was flung into outer space with issac azimov to keep me company.sailing on a raft in the deep south with mr clemmons. i do not know this teacher but she gave me the world:) yaa for sue and all our other teachers in babble;)

my son is already asking me when i am going to get rid of my 3 cases of "dead tree" books as he says i can get them all for my reader and those ugly things are all taped together,some have elastic keeping the chapters in place,many are missing covers,are underlined in ink,pencil,highlighter,bookend bound in electrical tape.he does not know that they have been my friends in hard times,gifts from people long gone,there is one in there and he does not know it.it has an inscription to me from him when he was still in utero and 2 months away " to my daddy from baby".they may be dead tree books but many are close friends as well
