See, I learnt touch typing in high school, but I cheat and look at the keyboard. After all, I have to get used to the spacing between keys, and unlike on a typewriter, if I hit two together here they both show up. But the touch of these keys is a light delight.

My mum used to teach office skills at high school so she taught me to type. Could never get to grips with shorthand though!

*unpoof -- Liz, I learnt Pitman shorthand in high school too, which I've totally forgotten. But I recently found out that my Aussie grandfather actually studied with Isaac Pitman and his interest in phonetics, which led eventually to his school in Berlin where he taught diplomats and others languages by immersion and phonetics before WW1. He also taught his 10 kids his methods. One of them became to technical advisor to the movie "Pygmalion" and supplied the phonetic exercises for it, including "The rain in Spain..."

Well, not only that, but after WW1 my grandfather went to the USA and Columbia University. HIs methods were used for correcting the accents of many movie stars. He was also asked to go to China and teach the medical students English that way, but he was too busy and sent my mother instead. That's where she met my dad, so I guess I owe my existence to Isaac Pitman!

out of work for 8 weeks - cant drive for another couple weeks. It was very delicate surgery so she has to make sure not to strain or pull anything. Cant lift a milk jug for 6 weeks anyway.
I hope it all goes well for her.

Still debating whether to repair car for $1400 (167K 2005) vs get gently used car with loan. I hate money decisions.

It is cheaper to spend $ for repairs and then continue to drive car into the ground...that is what my father would say.

My lawyer sister says to get repairs done and continue with this car. Other sister is uncertain. Grrr, if I didn't need to get a loan it would be easier, but I have been assisting my mother since my Dad died 14 months ago. More grrr.
Interest rates are really low on car loans now, Scrabbs. Hubby just got a four year on a 2014 Mazda for 1.9%.

Ide like to share a funny little story on my pug that happen last week--Annnapooh (the pug) was in our creak enjoying a swin and thought she was big enough to take on a male drake that was there gaurding over his setting mate. She went running towards him with her hair all up, a real show of courage! He let her put on her show for a good five minutes or so then he spread out his wings and came running at her ontop of the water---I swear Annapooh was parting the water trying to reach her me! Wonderful news, Sue! I have a nurse friend down south who got C.diff caring for a pt. with it and then had to have his gall bladder removed on top of that. He was hospitalized for 56 days in all because of his gut and lost 30 lbs (which he said was the only good thing out of it all)

the overall arcing theme of kid issues is planning ahead, and being responsible - it is unacceptable to ask the night before something if he can go, when he knew about it days in advance, and is scheduled to work during that time...
what's so difficult about asking several days ago if he could go, you know, when he had time to get someone to cover his work shift?
well, then he has natural consequences when his lack of planning results in missing something he would have enjoyed.
Or losing the job.

That's an important lesson - work related responsibility
On the other hand, there is documentation that the part of the frontal lobe responsible for planning and thinking about consequences does not catch up to other "mature" thinking patterns until late adolescence (20s for most people)

actually, a lot of adults (and I count myself among them) can be slow learners in some areas...
stick to your guns. It feels really awful to do it, but it is kinder for them to get this lesson now than when they need to pay rent or buy food.
back again. jes, write a note and post it for all to read that they have to cover their own shifts in advance as soon as they are aware of work conflicts. Then all you have to do is point at it when this happens again.
"So, you remember the whole 'planning ahead thing' we discussed last week? You do realize that we are now less than 2 hours from going to bed, and we will NOT be getting back up to change our alarms to get up early to take you somewhere in the morning. So I'm a bit confused why you aren't calling her to figure out if you're going or not now, if not sooner..."

his.... uhm, step-great-uncle (convoluted marriage thing, he's 18ish) is totally on our side about ditching this girl, and tells him so regularly, stid.
