Yes, regarding the wether, you sure are! we are even the only place in this whole part of Europe that the Romans did not take over-- they came, they built a couple of outposts, they decided it was too wet and boggy and miserable, and they left.
Leaving of course as their legacy the myriad stingin nettles they brought for their kitchen gardens.
Fascinating. Its a funny thing how something like the weather affects so much...

Another thing we found very exciting here-- not to mention occasionally alarming-- was low flying swans.
It was, but after 15 years we are starting to get used to it.
The swans sounds interesting. Do they fly gracefully??
Not really-- takes a lot of effort to move something that big. They get a good running start on water with the wings going slap, slap, then they lift off and pump the wings for all they're worth, neck pumping up and down and stretched way out. To land the splash down with a looooonnnngggg glide.
interesting....I dont think I've ever see a swan fly.
I saw one poor swan last yer trying to take off in water covered in very thin ice. It was too icy to get a good run going because it kept breking up under its feet and slowing it down, and it couldn't swim through the ice or walk on it. Poor thing finally got out of the pond, walked around to a less icy area, and got back into the water to take off.
Ooooh poor guy...thats so sad!

I tried to rescue one a few years ago; if fell straight down into a busy traffic intersection right in front of me. It sounded like someone dropped a feather pillow from several storeys up. Poor thing had hit a tram line. I ran out and picked it up the way I had just seen done on a nature show (swans are DANGEROUS), and carried it into a florist, whgere they called teh animal ambulance. It died though, from a broken neck from teh tram line. It was young; they said tehy see a few like that every year.

a frittata or quiche with nice vegetables and cheese inside... you can pick the ingredients. and fresh pineapple, mango and blueberries. (i have some nice blueberries here, but no the rest)
i open the fridge door and swing the frying pan back and forth over the shelves and whatever sticks,thats what is for dinner;/

Asian Shrimp for Annie......Asian Grilled Shrimp ingredients list: 1 lb of shrimp. 3 garlic cloves, whole, smashed. 3 slices of fresh ginger. 1 tablespoon of rice wine. 1 tablespoon of soy sauce. 1 tablespoon of honey. 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds. 2 teaspoons of five spice powder. 1 teaspoon of sesame oil. Instructions for Asian Grilled Shrimp: Combine all of the ingredients in a sealable bag and mix thoroughly. Leave to marinate for about 30 minutes. Preheat your grill to high. Oil the grill. Remove the shrimp from the marinade and place straight on the grill. Cook for 2 minutes per side until it turns pink. Put the rest of the marinade in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Reduce by half and drizzle over the grilled shrimp.

Just on for a second... standard fare here in the Netherlands is a bacon and cheese pancake with lots of bacon and syrup and butter. Bacon cooked right in. But pancakes in general are a treat here; there's a place down the street with 300 varieties. Recently I had a brie, leek, and smoked see-through ham one served with whipped butter and syrup. OK, I am not really here; back for my last 7 words later! *poof*

i understood that, it just reminded me of being salaried...more hours no extra pay. at least with hourly you get paid those extra hours.

yes, though one guy works for CSC and is salaried, which is a bummer for him in terms of extra shifts now and again

I worked at universities for about 15 years, nearly all of it in poly sci departments
at one time, I was secy to the MPA director for about 2 years
ahh, that was over a year ago. Now I have (hopefully) another year for my masters
just wait till you have to take your comps :evil grin:
I wish I had more poly sci, I feel kind of dumb next to my school mates. The profs said 'we didn't think poly sci was necessary for this program, though it makes it easier to engage in the conversation'. NO KIDDING.

apparently, it is the statistics and economics (required to get in) that they thought were more important.
oh, yes. it's 2 days of testing preliminary to your terminal essay or whatever final paper you have to write

no, I don't go to that kind of school. We take a 'class' called Capstone, which includes a final research paper. This program doesn't require a thesis, though it is offered as an alternative if we want to go on to get our PhD
yep - I don't know of any masters, PhD that doeesn't have comps, whatever the degree, I had to do them for masters health sciences, epidemiology - 2 days of hell

actually, comps weren't too horrid - the anticipation was what killed you
not sure yet. I've done plenty of that and now I don't know if I want to...I get laid off a lot because of budget cuts. It sucks.
the thing with comps is that they get passed around among the faculty and the grades are the average of the different ratings
and each prof has his/her own ideas about the best answers :P
our first day was general epi - second was your area of specializatiion, mine was epi of aging... that was the annoying day - so far out there!
I was a low wage earner/laborer for years, even after I got my horticulture degrees. I got shit on a lot, treated like crap and I watched a lot of workers go through the same. I went back to school to a) not have to do physical labor the rest of my life and move up the chain of command so someone would listen to me and b) to advocate for workers

but I'm afraid you'll never be able to do advocacy working for a govt agency - at any level
I was accused of being a union organizer at one job! like it was an insult! ha! it was the best compliment that boss ever gave me.

my program teaches a different approach tyger. we are the agents of change. I am taking an advocacy class next quarter (along with research core and public policy classes)

there are a lot of debates about change agents in govt but we are there FOR the people.

I could easily do lobbying, or work directly with a union, or for the human rights commission, or even a local Labor and Industries as a job site investigator (something I'd LOVE to do)

I am not that interested in academia, I am cynical of that too. and govt? I am one of a few that isn't THAT interested in it! there are the true public administrators in my program. I am not one of them.

depending on the school, faculty work harder than most people believe
at colleges, they can often get away with just teaching, but not at universities

most profs I know put in 50 hour weeks most of the time - occasionally more
at univs they have to do research & publish ("publish or perish"), and also do "public service"
farmers are horticulturists. Horticulture is a broad term that encompasses the entire green industry, thoughy agriculture is definitly its own specialty
not many have enough time to work in local govt, tho
I don't know if it is a requirement at my school, but I know the director of my program put out a great book. We used it last year (one out of many)
if they don't publish, they'll never get tenure
once they get tenure, publishing is still necessary for promotion
