ah well, all is relative, right? Yesterday we heard another good friend of ours has relapsed into cancer. Started with a melanoma, was declared clean a year ago, now a new spot in the knee. Secondary, so actually a death sentence. Makes our smaller problems look a lot smaller.

yes so are we. She did so well. But those melanomae seem to be one of the worst kinds of cancer.
Cancer is never good. Been through it.

lol that is great. We lost another very dear friend to cancer 2 years back and she also had this very black sense of humour. We were all with her at the end and laughed as much as we cried.

it works very differently here. I have a little apparatus like a calculator. I need to insert my card, then enter my pin, then enter a code. Then the apparatus spits out another code and that is the one I need for accessing my bank account online. I need to repeat this before I can send my list of payments.
I worked in banking for a hundred years, and the only people louder than those when teller asked for ID were thouse who screamed when someone else got into their account ... some kids and parents just shouldn't be trusted with this info.

To use it, one must insert the bank card, enter pin code, then enter a code that is randomly given on the online screen. The response to that code must be entered on the screen then, and only then you get access, or can do your payment.
Sprite I have seen something like that here with a bank.
since it is a combination of 2 random numbers, and the randomising program is only used once to program the calculator, it has so far been a foolproof way.

In the late 50s, there was a terrible infection amoung wild rabbits (myxamatosis) and we all went out to Epping Forest to shoot the little beasties. The infection did something that made their heads swell, and they couldn't hop. SoI had a couple of the worst evenings in my (then) young life - killing bunnies.
the only thing i can do by hand is sew a button on!!

he's still sneezing and slurping, but seems to have more energy and more of an appetite so I'm relieved. I've been following him around with his food for days, because it's so dangerous is they stop eating. With a cold, not being able to smell, they aren't very interested, so I spoiled him with an old kind of food which he loves. The battle will be to get him back on his healthier stuff once he's all better.

Strange that a predator would be so vulnerable to not eating. It only take about 36 hours of starvation for cats to get permanent liver damage. That can't be true of wild cats or they'd all die.

I think the cold came from going to the vets in Boston when i looked like he had a urinary problem, but in general he responds badly to the stress of travel.

he is normally on Vermont raw-which is nothing but ground chicken with the bones, etc. He's been much better since switching to that. He has had 3 life threatening attacks over the span of the 14 years. This actually doesn't seem to have been one. The vet here is very opposed to dry food because it concentrates the urine, which is not good for crystals. He used to be on a wet urinary food, but kept having attacks until we switched him to the raw. I'm so sorry to hear about your cat sue!

no puppy here, but what they don't eat the deer and squirrels get. The barred owl has been hanging out again watching the feeder, but the chickadees could care less, and they never seem to get eater. The squirrels have dug tunnels through the snow so they can pop up right by the tree with minimum owl exposure time.

Trif - what are "global learning disabilities"?
umm. let's see. she is in fourth grade, and still can't tie her shoes. she can't spell, and even when we go over and over the rules of phonics and how words are constructed, that doesn't help. she can't follow number operations when doing math, and she has a really hard time with making connections between concepts. for example, with weeks of concentrated drilling she might learn to add, but then when we move on to multiplying, she forgets what she learned about adding within weeks. rote memorization takes ages, and she can't tell her left from her right. and some other stuff too, but that is the basic profile

I have a daughter with learning disabilites. When she was in school she had a lot of help and eventually went to college and graduated. She even has help in college
what's her diagnosis trif? (not that it's important, but i work as a counselor for a special needs school)
she has friends, so that makes it a bit better, but it is getting harder now as the kids get older and they make up complicated games to play and things and she just gets lost. also, she isnt anywhere near where the other girls are in terms of wanting to be cool, do their hair, etc. she does get a lot of sped help and she has a classroom aid a lot of the time. she is quite canny, and we have had a lot of issues with her hiding assignments she feels are overwhelming. she squirrels things away all over the place, and then tells me she did the stuff in school, and tells the school I wouldn't help her at home, or it got lost. luckily they, and I, are on to her

she doesn't really have one, trag, and that is one of my frustrations with the limits of public school. they can identify where she needs help, but not why. I begged them to retain her for one year, as she is also younger than almost everyone else, but her problems didn't really make themselves clear until the end of first grade, and they won't retain past first grade. I am sure in the end she will do well, but I really think being retained would have helped a lot

My son has Down Syndrome and when he was 4 years old..I fought to get him into an early childhood education program...he takes a city bus to work and he works in a workshop...the help is out there. You have to demand the help your child needs
Hopefully, medical problems have been eliminated as the cause. A great niece of mine was small for her age (9), had numerous learning disabilities and was thought to be moderately autistic. At some point, her pediatrician ordered an MRI and brain scan. Found out she had an under-developed pituitary gland. She is now on hormone supplements and makinig leaps and bounds in learning and growth.

eva, i know how you feel! we had an ice storm wednesday, and i had run out of birdseed. i felt so bad for them! i took saltines and crushed them and sprinkled them around....the birdies were NOT impressed.

i love the sound they make when a dozen of them fly off at once. this big "whuffffff" sound of the wings is cool.
we get a lot of them in the early morning, they crowd the little guys out.
I have two morning feedings--doves and then for the rest of the bird world.
we have a mated pair of mourning doves here. they are lovely to listen to. but i'd rather hear the mockingbirds...which aren't up this far north
i have a male and female cardinal pair...i love seeing them!
Besides the bird feeder with sunflower seeds we put out seed cakes. The birds all take turns from the nearby trees.
I thought, when the feeding season started, that I had about 25 pounds of black sunflower seeds in a garbage can in the basement, but when I reached the scoop in I pulled out nothing but husks. The can was plastic, and upon closer inspection there were 3 miniscule holes, about the size of a nickle, and the mice had been getting in and dining at the biggest buffet in town from March through December (bear and thus non-bird feeding season).
and who said they liked flickers? ARE YOU NUTS? darn things are destructive and a pain!
The first time the doves swooped in to my window feeder, I thought someone was in the house. Scared me to death.
ahh, i feed them on my back deck, and the trees are too far away for convienient hanging spots.
I didn't know you could have a female cardinal.. the catholic church doesn't allow women to be priests.
