I work on the campus where Animal House was filmed...(when I was in HS)...kinda of odd because it's a movie I probably wouldn't care about except that I can relate to alot of the things on campus...
Saving Private Ryan was also entirely too intense for me, though I made it through. It was a harrowing experience. Can't imagine having lived through it.

I don't like when they give you the drops so your pupils don't dilate and everything hurts when you go outside in the sun. I don't have sunglasses because I need the regular glasses and that is awful.
I've never had a bad breathed optician or anything, but it's just the intensity with which they focus on your eye. As if they've never seen anything quite so fascinating.

That is pretty much what we were thinking, red -- we are just trying to figure out where we can safely put the tank -- need to be able to keep it safe from cats and the little brother, but still be accessible for her to take care of
I probably will get some eventually, Trif. I like to re4 up on animals first before I get them, to be absolutely certain I know how to look after them. I've looked after chickens in the past as a child, but I think, as an adult, I need a little more info.
I highly recommend the chicken articles on the Organic Gardening website, if they are still up. That's how we got started. Also, the Blue Seal feed company has an excellent, comprehensive booklet that is invaluable.

I had Banty hens as a child, they never laid because my Sister and I tormented them....We liked to see them attempt to fly, sad to admit that.
Trif - that usually works, since foxes always dig straight down. However, taking the top 6 inches of soil out of the run and laying wired together chain link fencing, then putting the soil back, also helps. So I have re4. Also, you need a strong mesh roof on the run or it must be at least 8 feet high if no roof. Foxes can easily clear a 5 or 6 foot fence, especially if there's anything nearby to spring off.
How pricy do they run, red?

Trif - any problems with red spider mite in the hen house?
Haven't ever noticed any, and I keep the place really clean
Jac, we used an old wooden swing set to make the run for the hens. We butted it up against their house, made little door from the house to the pen, then wrapped the entire swingset frame in chicken wire, which then went under the ground. Worked really well.
Grey, theres a little 3 gallon that comes with a filter on Sale at Fosters and Smith for about 40.00 the filter will help keep it cleaner and easier for your daughter.

The only thing that's putting me off, apart from the fox menace, is the thought of scraping crappy perches. I remember having that job as a child. The dust (which we know know is lethal) got up my nose and I got bitten to death by hen fleas.
I also let them out to free range if i am working in the garden, and they do a great job keeping grubs and such out of the garden, and fertilizing my lawn, not to mention aerating with their claws. Lovely, useful girls!
