Happy daze, eh dc?

no, no daze, i only had 2 Lynchburg Lemonades and an Irish Coffee.
my favourite grain is in the grid today :)
wellll....Irish coffee....
The irish coffee was a sickly green colour today cause i let the cream and creme de menthe melt into it
aw darn, perp is not a word!
reverse it jilli
creme de menthe and not Irish whiskey?
rbud, I got that E.
ty dart, lol!
whisky was in the coffee, around here, it's usually topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of creme de menthe

Susan Boyle in hospital!
Lovely time of year, this . . .
That is beautiful, nan!
that is beautiful, nan! I like pink.
what happened to her, jill?
oooh - gorgeous, nan! I have mahogany iris that blloms along with deep cherry poppies and pink peonies - 3 huge blowsy flowers. It's a great show for about two weeks.
emotional breakdown according to MTV News
just on the news, nan -- a bit of a breakdown, it seems
she sang her heart out
i do hope she recovers quickly and well. It's been quite a ride for her, and she sings so nicely.
hi ruru
evening, ruru
hi jilli
yes it is too bad that neither lasts much longer than that -- if that long!
hiya dc
JC -- are you there?
left column grey
well, then the annuals fill in - I go for fragrance - nasturtiums, dianthus, four-o-clocks. . .btw, I have loved bearded iris ever since I was a little kid, I think in part because when I was small, the irises were nose heights, and the smell is heavenly. Always takes me back.
taDah, cybernan!
The temperature has changed from chilly to hot so quickly, that I don't know if my annuals will amount to much this year.
the E words have me stumped
you know them jilli, i gurantee it.
7's done
Oh, sorry Jilli - yes, here now?

I see it's not -- how do I find it, JC?
On 360, Jilli - go to the page, then you'll see the link to enter that new blog.
g'night, nan :)
night nan
not a mamml. it's an icon from a while back, an extinct monster called dunkleosteous. They have fossils at the Metropark interpretive center, i believe.
You would go to Yahoo! 360 first, Jilli - and log in with your Yahoo! (Flickr) ID and password, then you will see the update on the Home page, and click to go to mine.
http://360.yahoo.com/
I had a teacher pal with the last name of Dunkle and she didn't look a bit like ur dunkleosteous....lol
hah!
She was a musician also.

my cat just walked in and squeeked at me. Thanks AEb i just don't ahve a spare minute to change it
I'm still wondering that, ruru . . .
Andree... name of the Mountain range of Alps.
i have no idea, it was clued for pe7
pe 7 writing instrument + number after 8
What u write with and a number
I know the sherrifs in the alps are called the alpini
I write with a stick aeb...
forget the Alps -- the pe range is a low-rising mountain range in northern England and southern Scotland.
lol
i thought they were the omar sherrifs
llllllooolllll
cute
Oh THAT - found that a while ago, and still didn't know what 'headless alps' could be? :P
the alps start with an A
so its not in italy, i thought i was going sillier than usual, now i have pe7 thx all

anyone need a clue for anything else before I go..?
yw aeb
dart must have finished this in 5 minutes
well, not that the 7's are done...i shall call it a night. ty all.
nite
I could use a z or 3... :)
well, two...
fine, only need 1 z now!
Hi for a couple minutes. Dart actually took closer to 12 minutes and went to the list fo the last 15!
The z's are two sets of word and plural.
12 minutes!!! shocking, lol
Yeah, it was disillusioning. ;-)
I'm missing a T-- is there a weird one?
rbud all the z's start with the same 4 letters
hi, Monkey! and thanks, I tend to miss the last longer pl, should probably check my others like that!
I usually end up with a bunch of simple plurals left at the end.
Phantom: fennec
47 left, i will finish at home, must do my faxing and go home, back later
Bye, Andree!
Going to need to be off soon. Poor littel Walter has raging chicken pox and I want to toss him into a lukewarm shower because it makes him feel better.
hi Monkey -- sorry about Walter!
Hi! Well, at least he's getting it over with and so far it doesn't itch. But the poor little guy will be missing the charity walks at his school he's so been looking forward to.
JC -- I did announce that I'd been to your blog and asked if Valerie was getting more used to the little guy, but you must have been buried in the grid or under your blankets
OK, off with me. I'll be back on at unpredetermined intervals. Have fun everyone!
howdy folks!
hi, Tak!
hello takuma!
Yep, logging into Babble was all it took for me to recognize that I need to go to sleep. Good luck, and have fun, all!
bye, Tak! lol
that was a quickie!
where did everybody go?
everyone vamoosed
hi dee hi
hugs jili
having an awful time with the top p
I have pr4/6 and 5/14 from there, dee
me too, I have 3 from there, have hunted for the last one for ages. ph 7 is from there
aww so I am missing the ph 7 then
just got the other pr4
ty jili; rb got it... rb starts with 3 consonants
I know about the ph7 -- it was clued a while ago but I didn't understand the clue :(
def of the ph 7: Anatomy. of or pertaining to the diaphragm. 2. Physiology. relating to the mind
it's an adjective
I think the same root word has to do with reading the bumps on one's head
aww I think you may be correct
got it -- thanks! All I could think of was that business about feeling the bumps on people's heads -- ph***ology
lol
gmta, rbud!
there we were, in the same place, jilli! lol
is there more than one re 7?
yes, 2
ty I figured there must be
One's a plural. And hi again.
one is a digestive enzyme, (re6/7) and one is to answer
Still missing a T. Is there a weird one? Besides the Ethiopian flour(s), I mean?
ty ty totally missed the second one... I doubt if I would have found that one
any more than 3 up's?
I only have 2 so can't help with that one...
5
ty neb
up 4 5 4 6 6
OK, how about the H on the left? I have a 4-letter word from it. Are they both 4's?
ty so much neb that will help me find my missing 1
hi 4/5 x 2
Thanks!
yqw
I don't think I have ever seen the up 6's before; ty neb!
Ooooh, hadn't thought to try ending one THAT way...
:)
can't think of a digestive enzyme starting with re. Years ago I learned pepsin, trypsin, and amylopsin -- we made a silly sentence of those words.
It's used in cheese making, derived from cow stomachs.
Usually ends -et, but not in his case...
Oh yes, that is also here, sorry...
there is an re 6/18 ending that way
Yeah, my oops. Same enzyme.
:)
and the ingredient in Junket, if you're old enough to remember that
ty both... found an se 6 cuz of that :)
I'm old enough to have had a grandmother who collected that...
SE? Cool, looking...
Walter is feeling better after the shower and his snack.
so good to hear; didn't know he had chicken pox... you on the end or at the beginning?
I still have an old packet of Junket!
funny jili
Third day. Yesterday was the first fever, and the itching hasn't started... hope it never does...
I have heard of it... what is it for (junket)
benelyn cough syrup used to be one of the things you could use for itching; lukewarm baths or showers like you mentioned
it makes a sort of jelled milk dessert, very comforting for a sick kid
our daughter had chicken pox when we used to live in florida, I let her play in her little wading pool all day, it worked well.
put mittens on our daughter's hands a couple of nite's when she slept to keep her from scratching her face, but we were lucky and had a light case
aww didn't know that jili
I felt awful; we didn't know Lindz had been exposed, and we exposed her entire Sunday school class...
Yeah, as soon as the sun hits the deck I'll be filling up buckets: he likes to splash the water around and get really wet while watering the plants. So far no itching though. I have a large bottle of calendula tincture waiting...
came home in afternoon after lunch; got ready to put her down for her nap and found them on her tummy
sounds like you are all ready to go
I got chickenpox in NY when I was 8 and we were booked to leave for England in a couple of days. Only got about 3 spots and hid them.
wow
very strange...the words from the h and f on the left side are not registering on the word list or on the tile stats, but it says i have already entered the word....
try refreshing, mama2
time to refresh
I have had that happen before
Got him up Friday and found them on his back. We'd already had a letetr from the school that it's going around. He didn't feel so bad Friday so after his visit to the doctor o confirm, he was able to attend a party day at school. But now he won't be going tomorrow and he'll be missing the charity walks he's been looking forward to.
Poor little Walter :(
all better...:)
surprising; our schools make you take them out of school until they have scabbed and are almost healed
welcome back mama
ty
good, mama!
Yes Jilli, this is a yearly big deal and this was to be the first year he really knew anything about it. Lots of hype at school and all. He really wants to go, but he has fever today and in order to go he would have to go to school for a full day tomorrow and then go in the evening for the walk until way past bedtime. I am vetoing it. And Volley, here they don't do that. The letter from the school, and the doctor, pointedout that by the time a kid shows spots, the entire class has already been exposed. Another kid is all over spotty as well, and has been in class.
interesting; makes sense I suppose that they have already been exposed
The virus is contaius for 1 - 3 days before the first spot appears. I have been advised to try to keep him away from newborns and pregnant women; that won't be difficult.
and old people who have autoimmune issues (because of shingles)
the poor teacher must be going nuts
True. But anyway he's still too unwell now to go out anyway, so it's not an issue. When he CAN go out I can scout the supermarket from my window-- it's very small.
The teacher is taking it with aplomb. We all just got through a 5th disease outbreak as well. It's a small school with great staff. She has lots of calendula cream, and she only has 18 kids to keep track of, and only a couple have pox.
hopefully since it is starting off like it is, it will me easy going like our daughter's; she had a grand time watching movies and being pampered :)
remind me what 5th disease is
Walter HATES being sick, but he's handling it OK, except that the cable company just accidentally scrambled his favorite TV channel (they usually get that sorted out pretty quickly though).
yipes
5th is a harmless childhood one that causes cold-like symptoms, a slapped-cheeks look, and a weird lacy kind of rash on the arms and legs.
Later today we will be starting work on the book we will be making from a story Walter has composed about a rabbit that lives on the moon.
I have heard of it... how long does it last?
odd name for a disease
aww sweet
5th? The illness lasts a few days but the rash comes and goes for weeks.
that's not fun
The rash causing childhood diseases were numbered in the old days. Can't remember which is which except I think chicken pox is #3.
The 5th rash doesn't itch or anything, it just looks kind of startling.
very interesting; our daughter is now 26 years old, so I have lost track of all the childhood diseases
I bet
I can see how you would. Until grandchildren, anyway...
hopefully some day.... :)
I was 36 when I had Walter, so don't give up hope.
aw ty ... praying for that "great" son-in-law now
And on that one it took me two tries... first marriage lasted two years. After that I met my soul mate and we just had our 16th anniversary.
our daughter is so self sufficient; strong willed; tall; successful at her job; owns her own home, so I think she scares some beaus off :)
fantastic congrats!
The right one will come along.
Thanks!
she will make such a fantastic mom; always has adored kids and all of those she babysat for loved her to pieces
congrats, too, on your degree; I have never heard of that one
Great! Too many of these go-getter success women just don't seem interested, and then they have kids for the wrong reasons and treat them like accessories. Very glad she's not like that.
so true
Thanks, yeah, it's a Dutch degree and so far is not doing me a lot of good uin the job hunt.... I picked it because it's very broad, but then everywhere I go says it's not focussed narrowly enough on what they do there. Sigh.
that stinks
did you tell them they could train you for their specific needs; you are a fast learner :)
We'll get through it. But it's being a tad stressful, to say the least. Meanwhile, Walter has just set himself up on the floor now with my sheepskin as a bed, and his blanket and pillow.
aww
fireworks
Oh yes, that's also in my CV, but the job market sucks so badly they all get plenty of applicants with "better" degrees and more experience.
YAY FOR YOU!!!
which is rather disingenuous since most companies will train you for their specific needs
true here right now, too. Thanks!
Meanwhile fingers crossed, please-- I did just apply for a job with the department of justice that DOES fit well with the degree.
nods at babble
congrats, Dee
xxxxx fingers crossed
ty
True BabRab, but the eperience thing really caps it off. There are drawbacks to spending a lot of years on the immigration process...
I expect the economy has made it an employer's market
Oh yes. They can be VEEERRRRYYY choosy right now.
congrats, dee!
I think recently I read that the US has 1.2 million college grads looking for jobs now... ty jili
OK, while Walter is on an "up" and can entertain himself for a bit, I'd better get laundry on and stuff. I'll be in and out here. Thanks for the crossed fingers for me and sympathies for the wee monkey! Have fun!
ttfn monkey :)
ditto what jili said... I need to be poofing... may I help anyone before I poof?
ok then.... have a great day / eve; hugs to all cya the flip *poof*
and that's finished for moi too
guess there's nobody here to help, so I'll be off to bed -- goodnight lurkers, if any :)
hello
Hello, Andree
hi babble
quiet tonight
hi and nbt
hi josh, 24 left here
47 here
36 and i desperately need sleep - good luck andree
morning josh, andree, BR, and whoever else is here.
uqjosh, ji f
hi fuq
bye josh
i've decided i'm going to try for 25 left before sleep
what can i say, i'm hooked
spoken like an addict and an insomniac (takes one to know one, lol)
back in a bit, dinnertime
my thing is i have not had much time to babble the past few days. my life has been crazy. so if i want to finish i have to do it in one sitting
yeah, I know what you mean. I haven't had time to finish more than a few of the smaller grids since about March
26
of course, it doesn't help that I'm also playing lexulous
i do my babbling in the middle of the night
go josh go!
I do the grid when I get to it. I babble to make sure I keep my incoherence at peak performance.
LOL, BR. Seems like you are always here, day and night, but always finished already when I get here.
ok 23 and bed for real - g'night
night, josh! sleep well for as long as you can.
bbiab, time for breakfast
ponzu isn't accepted...
a straight forward grid. the p's are interesting but many are repeats from another recent grid
yep, down to 25 already
ph 7
thanks - that is my last p up there
have a good day
you too
17 left, time to break... bbl
evening all
good morning everyone.
br, would you care to share that ph7?
Morning everyone
morning carlee
Hi Eva...MRP
wow..is a chatty group today
I asked for the ph7 and everything went silent. Maybe it's a secret?
there is a p in the grid????
oh..there...no coffee yet... didn't even see it
I'm lurking and just have a sec (that's why) but it's like the "science" of feeling head bumps but ends as an adjective, Eva.
thanks monkey-don'thave it yet but will go hunting now
Ehva ph + last 5 letters of a person who is schizoph*****
The "science" isn't in the grid, just the adjective.
great team work monkey and lori! Thanks
Well there's mega chat lag... G'd mornign Babblers
knew there were some smartpeople lurking out there
I'm having serious problems with the up's. I have on top of and turn over, but rumor has it there are several more that I just can't see.
scared me there for a moment carlee-thought we had different grids
I'm in a babble funk
i have 2 more monkey-having to do with mail
This grid blew by quickly until 21. Now it's poopy
exactly when I got stuck lori!
Thank you! Those are words?! But yoru clue was more than good enough to find 'em...
I have 30 left but I doubt they're real words.
glad that lame clue worked for you monkey
'Tweren't lame a'tall!
still missing 2 7's-the ci7, and the re7 that isn't about answering
That re7 is a plural of a 6. The ci is tricky to clue... hang on...
I have a ci 7, it's new to me
First 3 letters of a spice, then everything but the S from the poisonous gas.
I only have one singular re6 and it's not the right one
ci 4/5 + *** tin tin
facebook has a playbabble under :- entertainment and arts, general.
once again the wonder team of monkey and lori ride to the rescue!
You know the one you have that is an enzyme used in cheese production? Change the last two letters, and plural. For the re7, that is.
oops typed in wrong box sorry!!
ch6,24 please?
OK, must go refill Walter's water buckets on the deck. Anything to keep my poxy boy entertained! Chicken pox, that is. Then on with housework but I'll be back off and on.
that's it for the 7's! Thanks so much monkey
ch 6 is a plyural of the 5
*plural even
later monkey
thanks - I didn't have that 5 but found it
lol, well at least ya' got it!
does the in6,21 build on the 4 before it?
Oooh, looking. Thanks forward that's one of my missing i's
I found an independent in 6/21 (not a combo)
in + last 4 letters of a 7 letter word meaning exact (con****)
Get it forward?
nope, I can't think of the word meaning exact - still thinking
okay... exer**** getting fit!
ty- got it!D
is there just the one ir word? Still missing an i
NM, found it. 2 ir words. buh bye stoopid i
good morning Babblers :)
can i get a clue for the h on the left hand side please?
the d's were fun!
2 hi 4's anagrams
G'd morning Nono! (Hi hubby)
Missing 2 d's, so they weren't THAT fun Nono. :p
yes they are lori :)
do you have the ones with double cons.
I do now... Thanks Nono. 1 more d
im missing two d's
Hmm, hold the phone Nono said "ones" starts looking again
wondered how long that would take to sink in
***Not enough caffeine yet, combined with DENA and there you have it*** :)
*DENSA even
time to fix breakfast, be back in a bit
good morning babble friends. NBT

Good morning, fellow Babblers!
Hey ho, FM!

How is the grid today?
Hi Haz, ain't the summer just great!!
Hey zooz!
FM! ***whap, and unleashes freezing water balloons***
Isn't it just? The laundry is drying so fast I can't keep up.
G'd morning beach. Haz, I have 11 re's. Do I keep pursuing that?
beach, it's a nice grid today.
Grid is great beach, a few words that make you think but other than that v good :)
hi fm..how you doing?....
The e on the left takes the form of plural letters that follow it.
Yah yah, warm people are so smug. ***points at fire burning in stove***
Work that one out..... e4/10
is cold here too lori.... supposed to be cold all week and into next week
can i get a clue for the on the left bottom?

12 re words, Lori.
carlee am jugling a load of balls atm but so far am keeping them all up! But Lori just knocked 'em all down with her waterbombs :)

didnt get the clue?
***juggling balls makes me giggle every time.***
ef4/10 - you can work it out from the numbers
Okay, it gave me 3 words in total. Thanks haz!
You're welcome, Lori.
Haz picks her way daintily through the juggled balls.
se6,18 please?
Stilts are good for avoiding those juggled balls. Makes you look as though you're entering the spirit of the thing but keeps you aloof.
there..am finished..nice little grid
se6/18 - think of Mack, the silent comedian.
I think I should have put metaphor at the end of my last sentence.
Congratulations carlee
It rhymes with one of the re6/18.
Well done, carlee.
well done carelee
ok...shower...breakfast...work..then guides....
thanks all
have a good one...
Bye carlee.
Have a god one carlee. Laters

Yes, 2 of them.
Two re6, three re5
***le sigh*** thanks again
Maybe the cold has numbed Lori's brain cells.
the last re7 is a proper word the other one needs a bit more digging (not a clue just a comment).
u6 going to toilet :-)
Why are re's so painful?
Lori! FM! Haz! La Spanglettina!
Have you pluralled everything you can plural? (3)
AtaAtaAta!

Silly client..
I am now. After sorting out chaos this morning cos husband locked my house keys and car keys inside the car, inside the garage. And locked the garage.
Found it, t'was an re 6. There's 3 of them.
He is a man not inclined to do things by halves, isn't he?
That's a lot of lockage. :(
Lori can now move swiftly on to conquer the grid.
and of coruse it was my fault!
oh no Ata how did you get the keys ?
Swiftly. Yes. That's the word....
Naturellement. FM was not to hand so you were bound to be at fault.
Well c'mon now Ata, we know it wasn't his fault. That's a given.
got 2 nice burly neighbours to break into the garage for me :)
'With one bound, Lori conquered the grid'
hi all
That's something estate agents should taken into consideration when writing up a house 'Burly neighbours on either side'
Hello TO!
hello TO
hi TO!
G'd mornign TO! How goes the battle?
well I tried first. apparently my skills do not extend to lock picking lol
But they need to be nice burly neighbours. Nasty burly neighbours would be less successful in selling a place.
See, I knew I would get sucked in if I stopped to say hello...
Handsome burly neighbors is a bonus.
these definitely are!
yeah NBT
Being sucked in here, is the ebst vacuum Haz.
1 is handsome, 1 isn't. But they spent 1/2 an hour of their morning helping me, so both are lovely
Well done neighbours.
: D
in6,21 please?
I'll be putting some more pics up on flickr today. I'll email you all links to them later :)
nm - just realized I already have it
Right, must go, otherwise I'll never get things finished. I'll look forward to seeing the photos.

I hope you at least got the last word in, MrP -- like you all are ugly and your mothers dress you funny
a new Parent & Citizen committee was appointed in the last few months, they didn't have to work for anything to be appointed... and they fired me.
Hi all monkeying madly away here

that is rotten Mr P :(
work politics suck... sorry, mr. p
with this r4ecession,id work at the local airfield sifting crap out of flying porta-potties for crack if i had to;((oh i see it was a volunteer position;/
on the grounds that there are 'irreconsilable differences' between myself and P&C
meaning yuo had opnions and expressed them.
well, it is their loss, mrp. sounds like they want someone they can order around
sorry to hear that mrp, they sound like a small minded group

babrab... they can kiss my arse
I only speak the truth, mrp :)
I feel for the kids
ugh, a committee of closed minds is frightening
they wanted someone to fit in with their group and not make any waves and that is not the way you work.
peri, I love you for your truth, and truth is all we have in the end.
(((((((((((((group hug)))))))))) for mrp
guess how long this took??? from the time I asked for assistance to the time they fired me
indeed peri

pe4---writing instrument and number
hi Trif
great clue annie;)
hi flosey
In a different context, Mark Twain said: Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide against your conviction is to be an unqualified and excusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may.
lol i have a bookmark site for twain quotes;)
great quote BR
not geting the pe7 clue
ok, it is in my bio... have a good read!

What happened to in6?
in6/21, to cut
that is quite a letter you wrote, Mrp! Good for you!!!!
im sure you did fine work mrp,but it seems to me that the rest of this group got blindsided by protocols and forgot it was for the kids along the way.as i read this.it is a breakfast or lunch club for kids who need it right? what we do her is easy and simple.once a month each parent donates a big box of cerial to the breakfast club and we have a local fruit and veggie company whi donates apples, oranges and bananas, and thats it!! a child can get a good breakfast anytime and the whole issue is not buried in protocol and paperwork;)
have things to do, bbl
I would love to sit beside you and lickety, mrp, at the next meeting to look these people in the eye.
protocols! ha! they had no protocols, and wouldn't even give us a chance. My subcommittee were all pissy at me cause i didn't agree with some of their suggestions... ergo... goodbye to me
like i say..they forgot it was for the kids
thanks babrab... and you are right crossy
Good morning again. Mr P. i am sorry that there has been a problem feeding people who need it. One of my pet projects if food.
so, what happens now? Does the witch from the subcommittee take over, or do they just shut the whole thing down?
*is.
I think my letter to the principal is enough for now. They have shot themselves in the foot.
Ok, can someone explain why I keep typing onser over and over.
hello, Ms H ... hope you are having a wonderful day
keep it easy and dont make it a club for parents who only want to play at running a business

Officials said they had "no hope" for Air France Flight 447 which dropped off the radar three hours and less than 200 miles into a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
and thanks BR, looking forward to being home again
I think there is always hope, until there isn't.
according to the report, the plane should have arrived in Paris by now
Its gone down, but where...

LOL trif. I dont get it, but....it sounds intriguing.

No, bichon, not something I watch.
Have not had a tv since 1999.
Oh gosh, i am excited too, I finally figured out where our library is, so I am going over there after my gym today...If I can ever get to the gym!
maybe you can run to the library and skip the gym?
BR...
"Lost" has been on for about 4 years and is about a plane which disappears from Sydney to L.A. The island it lands on is mysterious to say the least

Man I need a new modem
Downloading something at a whole 20kbps while I'm paying for 250 times that
and.... done
Yeah... I need a new computer. Trying to get my husband on the laptop wagon.
congrats KJE
ty
I'm still using one of the first XP computers that ever came out
laptops rock
It has a 6-year-old LCD monitor with dirt and spots that look funny
The computer itself is 7 years old, with a few replacements of the motherboard throughout.
diy rushie?
I think mine is about the same.
My husband is a guy that hates change... but I want to get this monstrosity out of my living/dining area.
I do give this computer credit though
It's been used and abused and treated like crap but it keeps on ticking
BRB going to top up my fuel tank
Well, it still works.
upgrading is inevitable, at some point it just needs to be done
Back with more coffee.
Oh, he is on board with that... but since we are going to spend the $$$ I figure get a laptop instead of the freestanding.
But he is not that familiar with them, so it will be a long research process... he is coming around though!
dont really blame you on that, i have one and i sold my desktop. used it 2 times a year
* yawn * morning all...
Dell has some good deals going right now (it's their 25th anniversary sale)
hi pini
My brother in law is a computer guy and he said to stay away from Dell... said I can get the same basic stuff several hundred cheaper than Dell.
Anyway, I know next to nothing so I have to listen to him!
Yeah, if it was up to me I'd save up about $2,000-2,500 and build one myself
I have gotten all my computers etc from Dell for a long time/ no probs yet
i like toshiba myself. or if i did have a desktop, i built it myself
I'd probably make mine with 16GB of RAM and a 25mbps download speed
Really? I'm looking at one that $549 for 3GB Mem; 250GB HD; 15" monitor
My husband and brother in law built/then upgraded this one.
He said that the Toshiba's are decent.
That isn't bad Pini
Make sure it's XP though
my desktops are custom built...I'm not all that keen on proprietary systems...
has Vista on it now, Rushie...but I have acceess to XP
Well... it will be our only computer so I think I have to go with 4GB Mem
Ah, dump the Vista and make sure XP is on it
Because the reason being is Vista is a glitchy slower version of XP, and uses twice as much RAM
$749 = 4G Mem; 320GB HD
Pini... yeah that is why my brother in law said to stay away from Dell... I guess because they can't just pop things in and out when I need upgrading/replacing, etc.
...and I don't particulary care for Vista anyway...too new and such a hassle
I definitely do NOT want Vista.
windows 7 is coming out soon
I think I can definitely get one in the 800 - 900 range.
i think quarter 1 of 2010
Eh, I wouldn't advise getting it though
Me either...I have a Toshiba laptop, but have never put it on the internet because it has my genealogy on it...
i have the beta version
But I also need a new printer... when it rains it pours! But I want the HP all-in-one that can do 12 x 12 paper...
I have an HP all-in-one
Just another manic Monday. Hi, kids!
I also have tons of pictures/music... so I also want a portable hard drive just to hold all that stuff.
Couple years old, it's an Officejet 7310
Do you like it Rushie?
Hi Judi
Hi Judi.
I have a Dell printer now and I HATE it... 2 years old and the color cartridges do NOT work anymore.
Off warranty, of course.
Yeah, it's got photocopying, scanning, printing...
* sigh * would love to stay and gleen more info from this convo, but must get ready for work! thanks for what I've learned so far ;)
Hello, Pini! :)
hi JC ;)
See our new baby? ;)
I'll try and pop back in before I take off...
This one just came out this year I think and it can accommodate up to 12" paper... which is great, as I do many things for the school that require larger paper than 8.5"
Bye Pini. Have fun at work.
wow...great looking find, JC!
Any clues on the PH word?
Aww, thank you Pini! :) Yes, he's a cutie!
Cute pup, J.C.
But a little brat, of course! ;)
Beautiful Puppy JC
Thank you, mom2han8! :)
And Judi, sorry! :)
Well, arent' they all???
Yes, how true mom . . .
Anyone find the PH word yet?
Not yet, Rushie.
Lol, some days I can find 9-letter words in 2 seconds in a glance but I can't find a 4 letter word
I guess it's because the 4-letter ones are more random
I use more of the longer words every day than stuff like aeon
how many letters is the PH word?
I have it, let me figure out how to clue
ph7
ph + do ** mi + a nice view is sc***
Anatomy. of or pertaining to the diaphragm.
that is good too bichon

Thanks, jmcnrick! :)
a devil with the name J. C. ????????
Thank you J.C. What is a tortoiseshell?
A cat, Alexis . . .
Surely you know that - a cat with tortoiseshell colouring?
They are often called 'tortie' for short?
Black, with patches and splotches of orange and tan?
I've seriously never heard of a tortoiseshell cat
pe7?
Hmmm . . . they're extremely common!
sounds cool though, J.C.
do all the pe's start with the same first 3 letters?
I'm sure you've seen some, Alexis - there's no way you wouldn't have.
I like the tabby in your photos - very cute! :)
All except the last 'pe', suefrad . . .
Probably J.C. I've just never heard it called that
can I have a clue for the pr7?
sorry, pe7
The 'pe7,32' is a low-rising mountain range, in the north of this country, and south of Scotland.
ty j.c.
You're welcome, Sue - good luck to everyone finishing! Bye for now - *POOF!*
bye J. C.

happy Hurricane season everyone. It's official today.
hurricans affect the northwest in august, becasue a big hurricane will move the jet stream north, which causes stronger winds during fire season....

Hi folks! I have a few minutes, thought I'd see how far I can get bashing my head against the last 24.
15...
Is anyone there to help me out with the pu6/7 issue?
6...
4...
Looks like I could sure use clues for all of them... I'll stare at them for awhile and then go away for a while and then come back for a while. It's a valid strategy. And I'm likely to pounce on the first person to de-lurk. *Lies in wait behind a rock...*
one more se5/10 eluding me
I've got those! Which one do you need?
Is it the one like posted (as in mail) but with a vowel after?
ahh it must be
monkey there is a 5,6,7 and 6 which start with a cats sound using only a single last letter + not out for the 5 and the rest all use the same base
that was it...ty MonkeyGames :-)
Thank you Katie! How embarrassing. I had them without the end vowel, didn't even see to exxtend. THANK YOU! Do you have the in6/21?
not yet, will go and look for it now
The in6/21 and teh pe7 are my last ones, and I see them not.
Got th epe7, suddenly.
Just need that in...
in6/21 to cut into ....not molars, but...
Oh dear, whack me with a scrod for that one! And thank you, thank you, fireworks are just what I neded after a day like this!
congrats monkey
How is Walter now?
congrats!
His fever was down when I got him off to bed, and there's still no itching, but he's pretty ragged at th emoment, porr kidlet. We'll see how he sleeps-- last night he was pretty much awake until 1:30. Then we goyt up at 6.
MONKEY!!!! ((((hugs)))) thanks again for your note, it helped me calm down enough to sleep last night! (YAY for firewords)
And thanks fo rthe congrats!
Hi stidmama
HI STID!!!! No problem, now I'm not sprry I had the date wrong!
Hello all... oh dear, poor little guy.
is it chicken pox?
Yup. It's chicken pox, you know.
when is you birthday stidmama?
.....you can see who spends too long on facebook!!!!
The worst part, really, is that he'll now have to miss this yearly set of charity walks he's been really looking forward to.
LOL I had it REALLY bad when I was a child, had my kids vaccinated. One got it, one didn't -- the one who didn't later turned out to be NOT immune. That's the one who's going to Australia this summer, so we had his re-done.
Is it me, Katie? I think it's me.
My birthday is sometime... *avoiding obviousness* soon.
mine is wednesday :-)
The vacc still seems to be linked to later shingles and is not always efefctive... it's not used here.
Oh no Monkey it is most certainly me!
Happy advance birthday both of you!
shingles comes with vaccine or with actual disease. My fever was dangerously high as a child... I still remember the hallucinations. That's why we had our boys get the vaccination.
That makes sense to me, Stid. I had chicken pox when I was 15. My step father hadn't, so I got to be shut away in my room with no human contact for 2 weeks. Trust me, that was heaven under the home circumstances at the time.
Better dash BBQ nearly ready and hubby need help, bbs
AHA! found the P words without help! LOL
Were they scary or happy hallucinations? Or neither or both?
Bye Katie!
wow monkey -- poor kid. ((hugs 15 year old Monkay))
Good for you, Stid! The p's nearly killed me.
later katie ((hugs))
they were frightfully scary, Monkey. I had nightmares for years afterward
It's OK now. But I do feel I may have had a better start in life if I'd had, well, a better start in life...
Oh no, Stid, that's awful!
yes, I understand that. It is a mark of your endurance and strength though, that you have done well in life afterward.
I look at my trials as having helped form me -- though I would not wish them on others, they do help me understand people whose misfortunes sometimes are too much to bear.
how is your grandfather doing? I was thinking of Sam on Saturday when my friend was giving her talk on jellyfish at the local college's science carnival. He would have LOVED her presentation.
hah, found a bird. Evening all.
SPRITE!!!!!!! *tweet tweet twitter*
I think Monkey fell away...
stiddie!!!!!!!!! *big hug* How are you dear?
I am well sprite! how's your puppy? I wandered past your flicker pages the other day and just adore the lovely kennel your husband built for him.
it is great, isn't it? Puppy is doing terrific, will upload new pics tomorrow.
I'll try to remember to look. This week I have a bunch of papers/tasks to complete for classes -- final in the one class is next week, the other just has the BIG PROJECT due. *sigh*
How about you? has spring sprung for holland yet?
NO blank tiles! down to 49...
wow, busy schedule. You can always take a look, I won't take the pics down, so don't feel pressed!
okay, thanks. my dog has been out of control lately, he so resents my being away from home all the time. We really need to get him a companion dog... but right now time and money are both at premiums, so it's not likely.
no, and if you get a second dog, you will need a lot of time to train the new one and keep the old one content. *hugs*
yep, exactly. *more hugs* I have so missed seeing you!
you heard about my getting into the Master's in Teaching program?
and vice versa!
yes I did, wtg stiddie! Making us all proud!
*proud mama look* *scared mama look* *what have I got myself into now mama look*
you can do it. Don´t be scared, you´ll be fi4, one step at a time and you´ll make it.
thanks sprite, that is my planned method, for sure. That, and buying shares in coffee stocks!
lol!
oh my I got the last V. I AM getting better at this!
so what's up for your kiddos this summer? stidkid #1 goes to Australia in July, the same week that stidkid#2 is in a play; we are hosting their penpal from Tbilisi for a couple months as well...
go sprite go!
first week summer camp and 2nd week pony care for Caya. Tim doesn't know and doesn't want anything (guess his age). We are not going abroad, but will go canoeing for a couple of days.
LOL sprite... your kid and my kids could easily swap places, i think!
lol I think so too! And have a great time while at it.
my younger one came up behind me a few days ago when I was at at his school and spoke. I didn't know who it was until I turned around! *old mama look* his voice has started to turn! (and it was already quite deep and husky)
ohhhh wow! Same here, Tim's voice is actually lower than my love's atm (when it is not a couple of octaves higher).
WOW! split the difference? LOL do they have the same inflection too? my Tom and the younger stidkid sure do, I have to check now when I call the house to know who I am talking to.
absolutely. And Tim is about a full head bigger than I, can you believe it? Must look up at him.
hm. down to 35. I think I will pause here and eat before I rush off to class. *nibbling on choclits* balanced diet, you know!
good! Chocolate is brain food. You need it.
yes, the stidkid has paused for several months at about 5-10, but may be poised to go higher still. Though when I bought him shoes yesterday he hadn't grown his "tootsies" that much more.
(almost put the word in the chog)
hi all
ah, that is really nice. Those fe4 are amazing, so fast as they grow.
hi jmcnrick
stiddie, before you go, when is your birthday exactly? This week, I believe?
my son is suppose to email me a photo of my cat but I think by the time he does we will be on another theme
jmc, good news: this theme will come back every Monday from now on!
very very soon... *mysterious mama look* LOL I really try to not publish it. will post it to my profile briefly for you.
then I won't fret! lol
oh no, don't fret! Relax and do it next week and we'll enjoy it!
*giggles* Stiddie, I wanna put it on Babble of course!
okay, it's at the bottom of my profile. I'll leave it there today.
jmc... why does your SON have to mail a photo of YOUR cat to you? what have you done to the cat?
*checks stid's profile, doesn't see yet*
lol I am at work and strangely enough I do not have a photo of my cat on my work computer
You know sprite -- I was born in the year of the fire horse, and according to a book I read about 20 years ago in the month of the horse, on the day of the horse at the hour of the horse...
are you saying your are part of the horsey set?
hm. wonder what happened? does DrG have a wordcount limit?
I am a fire horse as well
no, no limit. Will check again.
Back fo r just a sec to explain that my internet went all wonky and I have finally rebooted and it works again but meanwhile a show's on so I'm not "staying"... have fun all, and HI SPRITE!
hi MonkeyG
I know what happened -- I hit the wrong "update" field. now it's there.
lol
yes, we're tolerably firey!
ah ha! *sneaky J.E. look*
hey again monkey. I had asked about Sam...
yup it shows, thanks stiddie!
I'll stay for a minute because I haven't "seen" you in forever, Sprite! How are you?
yw sprite.
did they also tell you that in the old days, girls born in the fire horse years were often killed?
yes, I had heard that... so pleased to have been born in a MODERN fire horse year! LOL
very slowly trying to climb upwards, MonkeyG. Practising patience. Practising a LOT, lolll.
yeah, and I can actually see why they did, in those times and places. We aren't easy, so to speak. We are catalysors, right?
*puts dash of patience in sprite's tea to speed up the process*
ohhh thanks!
no doubt, sprite. Things are rarely completely settled around me -- I have so many ideas and plans...
What's going on? I thought I had you in my faceboook friends thing but when I click on you it says "pending" or something. I've been too out of touch, sorry!
Monkey's baby is sick, sprite... he has chicken pox.
You OK?
awww chicken pox. Well better have it and be do4 with it. Not nice in this heat though.
I'll head out and let you girls chat for a while. ((hugs sprite)) ((hugs monkey)) Love you both and hope I see you again SOON... (like, next week when I don't have so many classes to attend).
Yes, the poor litte fellow is just covered in spots and has intermittent high fevers. He's generally miserable but can be cheered up for periods, especially by a bucket of water out on the deck.
two friends of mine once said it very clearly, lol. One said: she makes things change and happen. And the other said: yes, the things that need changing most, and you want changing least.
I'll sure try, Stid! Happy birthday soon again! Have a good one!
stiddie, will think of you as always, enjoy the classes and be proud of you! *hugssssssss*
*poof*
if you can keep his temp reasonably in the middle and his fingers from the pox, things will be better very soon.
Yeah, we'll get through it. Luckily he has no itching yet. And he responds well to paracetamol.
But he has to miss the avondvierdagse, and he has been really looking forward to it.
my awfully impossible son came home and apologised for his misbehaviour in a very sincere way. Yay for the kid :)
poor little Monkey. But you will cheer him up... and he learns again that he cannot always have what he wants, though he can try to want what he gets ;)
I haven't heard about this-- what'd he do? Great that he apologized, and nicely at that!
True, true. I'll get down to work with him on a book we're doing and he'll be distracted. He "wrote" the story and I will illustrate it and bind it into a real book for him.
lol I didn't tell, nothing big, just very bad behaviour (including almost breaking a window out of sheer rage). I was really mad at him, and he just came home and told me I was right and he was sorry. That is something, isn't it, for a 13 yo.
Yes indeed. The first part is because he's a teenager, the second part is because he's good natured and well brought up. Well done!
yeah, he is ok, I was just making fun earlier. I love him to bits.
and thanks for the compliment :)
I know you do. And he yhou.
oh yes. It is actually funny to see how amazed he can be at his own misbehaviour. They often really don't KNOW why they act up, do they... all those hormones rule.
Don't I know it! I remember being a teenager. I knew everything and was always right and everyone was always trying to make me get upset.
hm I remember it being hell, but that was because it was, kind of, at home. Getting together with my sister again has made so much clear, sad as it is, but clear isn't bad.
It WAS hell!!!! But I still knew I was right about everything. And that everybody else hated me. Especially mom.
sheezzz that sounds vague. Sorry. I just mean, it is better to know for sure and get it behind you, than being unclear about your past.
and did she? Your mom I mean? Or did you just think so?
I understood. And you're right.
thanks
At times she did. I moved out at 15 when she said she wished I had never been born because I accidentally stepped on the edge of the pile of clothes we were giving to charity. But she's on the right medication now and we get along OK, as long as we aren't around each other much. She's really a great lady... just shouldn't have been in any kind of relationship with anyone back then.
painful. But great that you managed to connect to her later in life in some way.
yay, fireworks. *hugs* to you and little Monkey, and see you soon.
It was for Walter. I was pregnant and didn't want him to see the kind of fake out relationship she had with her mom that always made me so uncomfortable. She doesn't really remember those days now anyway so I can put it all beghind me.
YAY for your fireworks! Come for a barbecue soon!
good for you. And we will, let us know. Bye :)
Bye, and *poof* as well!
anyone have a clue for the re7/36?
nm

hi jacq
yw elder
hello Jacq,
hello nan and elder
hi jacq
got some good news from your region yesterday jacq -- cousin was able to get some last minute tickets for the tattoo -- really looking forward to it.
it's supposed to be amazing to see, but tell them to take lots of money, my mum was £5 for a glass of wine and a small one at that
edinburgh is very expensive
The tickets are our treat -- everyone will be responsible for their own libations!
very popular and as most event expensive.
Yes -- I noticed that the last time we were there.
Wonderful treat.
they weren't there for any event, they were treated to tickets to a rugby match and that was jsut a glass of wine in a hotel, and not even a good hotel
jacq, similar to most cities very costly.
hi and bye all, have fun! Icon theme and icon updated, must put myself to bed now.
hello and bye Sprite.sleep well. :)
ty sprite -- but still have a few more days to go on my flower theme!
no problem for me, nan, I love your flowers!
Good afternoon, folks!
*quick hug for elder*
and to you too * Hugs *
hello Takuma.
good afternoon all -- how is the grid today?

sigh
lesson learnt I guess, for that particular person.

Hi Haz, good to see you
hello Haz, long time no see. Are you well?.

I got it! Yippee Skippee! thanks for the last 12 hours
Hello elder - I'm very well - hope you are too.
hello haz!
And Katie of the well-protected skin..
congrats rebeck
Reb...morewords.com might be of some assistance (if you're interested in "aids")
Reb always pleasing to hear gladness.
too true Haz, not going through another nag fest
Hello jmc - and well done Rebeck.
yeah reb!
Sorry about that, but you know how much we like giving advice. I felt like Lucy, sitting at a booth with 'Unasked for advice dispensed here'
Haz, I am fine thank you, the weather helps to raise ones spirits.
(that suggestion was only in response to 12-hour search for sgl word)
Absolutely, elder, it's been a tonic.
hi all :)
I thought reb meant fireworks and thanks for 12 hours of fun!
which one reb?
hi ata
Hello Ata! I'm just looking in to say hello.
oh... did I misinterpret?
yo ata!
Lol Haz, actually I listened to you the first time but boy did everyone join in!
maybe I did
Hello ata, haven't seen you for ages.
I tend to listen to advice when it's good, and putting suncream on was good advice
My horse gait has changed from gallop to trot.-:)
I know - but glad you listened to me.
* think I'm missing something *
hello Ata.
Me too. Thought I'd say hi to Katie :) I've been in Sark for a week!
I hate getting advice from people about things you know they know nothing about!
got to work today and half the office was lobster red so it was very good advice
I am always missing something
I have been at this since insomnia last night with a new grid and then again now! you guys are the best! look forward to lots of babbling...and in some cases, my sister turned me on to this puzzle word game and it's my new best friend! *Ü*
Hi Ata, did you have a good time?
heard you had a lovely time Ata and your dogs too.
Lobster red is never a good look and who needs pain?
well, welcome to babble, Reb!!! You'll have fun...
I haven't seen Liz since I came back from holiday
fun and more insomnia
Anyway, must away again (sorry it's such a brief visit) See you tomorrow!
A really lovely time! Liz is so lovely, and her whole family too.
Oh Reb addicted already as we all are

(it's annoying me)
Haz!!!! Dan missed hre Hi Ata(()), crossy ((())), heck this greeting could take a while ...... Good evening all :))
good! tired for the last 2 days after getting boats and ferries and stuff. Now I have a cat who is intent on telling me how HORRIBLY she's been treated in the cattery
Cross, thought it would be ok. :)
hey FM
like the other h4 but a different vowell
hi FM
fm:))) ((()))
fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
Ata, they have a wonderful way of making you feel guilty, leaving them behind.
jmc...which H are you looking at?
Pini, jmc elder, yay babble crew!
evil cat roommates that dessert the royal cat
lol, I can only imagine, I bet she knows that she was the only one left behind
oh yes. she is telling me every 10 minutes with huge burmese yowls
the H on the left has an H4 like the H on the right except for the vowell
Hello FMitch. you have just missed Haz, are you two taking shifts now ?) :)
the H4 on the right is such a fish I won't mention it
ours have only just settled down and we have been back 8 days
Hi FM :-)
I have that one, jmc...
Oh and Katie, sorry didn't mean to miss you out of the multitudinous greetings!
...I need a 2nd H from the one on the left (have hi4)
Mari and Mr Mari came round on Saturday and the cats completely ignored them even though they fed them for two weeks
Haz and I are hot desking due to cut back :(
pini like a payment you make to live in a house
what is hot desking?
sorry pini I misunderstood what you were looking for
jJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ JJJJ
and that was Silverclaw herself!
what is hot desking?
Fitch lol..
lol ata
Sharing office space Pini
* pondering, katie *
I was wondering if that was an emoticon I didn't know!
you will know when one of my cats take over the keyboard as the spelling will improve;))
ooooh, haven't heard the term before ;)
Good lord I thought that hot desking was a US invention!
lol crossy
cute, crossy
sharing desks is common but I never heard that term
then I don't work at megacorp here
oh, katie...I get it now, but have that one...still need one more from the LEFT H..
awwww sily is sitting right here next to me purring madly
Neither do I thank heavens, left corporate life long ago!
ty katie
Sily is purring because she is thinking of what to get up to next
hi4 - not hers + fish * chips
I know .......
thx ata...would never have found that one!!!
now I can safely go back to work!
ty ata
cya l8r this afternoon...tootles!!!
*grin*
bye pini I will try to pass you while I work the hotline
(how many pini?)
now what kind of bloody un-word is that i ask you?:/
I thought hotdesking was an american term as well
ty ata
I did too
thanks ata, I didn't have it either
Me three
whats next hisq???
I could do with leaving the corporate world as well
crossy it is country talk "we have hi4 and her'n towells" lol
I've only worked for US cos up to a while back and thats where I learned all the lingo :)
lol jmc
well one of the nice things about megacorp is getting paid every payday -- something that doesn't always happen here
a funded 401(k) plan *sigh*
I work for the public sector so we do things like 'thought showers' rather than 'brain storming'
ahh redmeck speak as in "yallunto" "hey fred! yallunto come to my bar-bee-cue?
Katie - it is scary outside the corporate mantle,
supplies I don't buy myself
right crossy!
I could do with retiring I think
'thought showers' OMG
cupboards full of nice new notepads
a separate kitchen from the bathroom
seriously, I laughed the first time because I thought they were joking
Fmitch, I think it is probably worse than corporate.
an elevator instead of a fourth floor walkup
From Brain Storming to thought showers - hells bells!
Oh I'm not leaving steady employment if I have to give up the stationary cupboard
thought showers? really?
really
right now its nasty in the vacation/resort public service business.people are getting dropped like flies and you dont even have time to care or youllbe next, just walk over the corpses and try to survice:((
someone to take out the trash and clean the said bath/kitchen
we aren't supposed to use the phrase nitty gritty any more either
survive;( and i dont like it
wierd katie why not nittygritty?
So what will happen next crossy with your resort?
how about get down to where the cheese binds instead?
you can always work for me if you don't mind doing it for free
finally! silverclaw has found her basket and shut up
lol Ata
yeah silverclaw
something to do with the slave trade, I didn't really get it and it seemed like they would have appreciated me asking
tough to say jm..we are full this summer, fully booked but at off-season rates and staff is trimmed to the bone
Ata, bliss.
I give her 8 minutes ...
oh no crossy, it must be very hard.
I am seeing real bargains in the travel emails these days
makes me hopeful that when I take my sabbatical I can afford to actually go somewhere
the ones that made the cuts are doing the work of 3,its quite common in the resorts now
you leafe 50% of your daily word un-done and hope to catch up next day
leave*
crossy - What do people do at the resort now the snow has gone? I thought it was only a ski venue?
I wish I could find bargain flights to oregon!
that sucks crossy -- it's so hard is you care about your work to work in that setup
but enough of that gloom! more babble is needed!:))
plus im the lucky one,i get 4 days a week still;)
[Q] From Helen Norris: Any ideas on the origins of the expression nitty-gritty? I heard today a rather horrible suggestion that it referred to the debris left in the bottom of slave ships after their voyages, once the slaves remaining alive had been removed. [A] This belongs in the same class of folklore which holds that a picnic was a slave lynching party. There is the very slightest of links, in that nitty-gritty was originally a Black American English expression, and some writers have guessed that nitty-gritty is a euphemism for shitty. Apart from those tenuous associations, the evidence is all against the theory. The first known example in print has recently been found by Fred Shapiro of Yale University, in the Pittsburgh Courier of 29 June 1940: “Any convention goes lacking when that Joe Louis clenches his fists, put on the gloves, and steps into the ring in his pretty satin trunks and whips another guy down in the ‘nitty-gritty.’†The expression is almost certainly older (I know of two people who claim to have come across it in the 1920s). But it’s inconceivable that it should have been around since slave-ship days without somebody writing it down. Its meaning — the fundamental issues, the heart of the matter, or the most important aspects of some situation — also doesn’t suggest a connection. Its origins are elusive. One explanation is that it is a reduplication — through the same mechanism that has given us namby-pamby and itsy-bitsy — of the standard English gritty. This has a literal sense of containing or being covered with grit, but figuratively means showing courage and resolve, so a link with the modern sense is plausible. A less probable explanation was suggested, in a 1974 issue of American Speech, the journal of the American Dialect Society, that nits refers to head lice and grits to the corn cereal. None of these are supported by any firm evidence, and it’s this lack of a clear origin that has contributed to the wide distribution of the slave-ship story.
Thank you jmc, I will continue to use it now I know it is not offensive to any culture
re
I would hate to have to quit listening to the Nitty Gritty Dirt band!

ty welki!
K thanks for the clues guys
where ya going, rushie?
leaving us?
Going nowhere
* sigh of relief *
thought we were scarring you off!
ci7,32 is like saying cinnamon with a heavy stereotypical Chinese accent lol
geez, that sounds like my life...going nowhere.
isn't that why we're all here, lbd? to keep each other company as we go nowhere? :)
Lol
hey ms. nowheremam living in your nowhere land
oh yeah, i knew you all were good company, just forgot our destination
* giggle *
oh thanks, jmc. now i'll have that partial earworm mocking my brain
lol so sorry just thought it was appropriate to the conversation
~~making all his nowhere plans for nobody~~
oops, and i added to it
I came back at a fun time 8^)
oh yech - just came in and read about the earworm in the brain and immediately thought about that awful scene in Star Trek II with the intergalactic earwig. LOL!
*grumble, must think of appropriate payback*
oh, we're such a fun group!! LOL
how many, jmc?
gosh lbd didn't mean to bring pain
oy .. now i'm thinking of the outer limits (or twilight zone) episode ... the man comes back from the jungle or someplace and the doc says, 'i have good news and bad news...'
21
32 here
eeewww, ch1212! not to mention the old twilight zone episode, where the earwig hatches eggs in the guys brain!
* creeping closer *
Oh ICK! I remember that one too!
no doubt pini :-)
creepy .. literally :)
I was terrified to go to sleep for days, and kept checking for bugs around my bed.
*puts on foil cap to keep Welki outta my head*
ohhh, we're on a roll tonight!
one minute fun; next minute creep out
(think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts)
ROFL
it's a small world after all. it's a small world after all
What kinda word would the vi5,18 be...
hey buds, how's it going?
ch, when i lived back east, it was common to see earwhigs outside ... they gave me the willies *shudder*
hi Dorens
dangerous to come in dorens!
Rushie, it relates to Wine
doresn
ah, dorens knows the insect of whig we speak :)
Ah, gonna money with that
I guess scrambled eggs for dinner is now out of the running
So it's closer to the second 5,16 than the first?
I prefer the bug to "it's a small world" running through my head
oooohhh okay, no more earwigs - even the word makes me shiver :)
we have earwigs here, creepy buggers.
LOL, rur! I LOVE scrambled eggs for dinner....
i'm dangerous myself. ken just gave me his brand new convertible bmw 335 to drive home. wow! what fun. I drove all over town! (he is washing my car tomorrow.. tough trade, eh?)
why is scrambled eggs out?
I prefer it's a small world after all rather than Barry Manilow
Like that starfish in the tank in Finding Nemo says, "go to my happy place"
oh mama! no 65 mph for you!
vi+ St ***olaus (santa)
ooo ooo can I drive it!?!?!?
NICE wheels, dor!
nice barter, dorens!
not me, mandy me to death instead of those whiny voices *lol*
Thanks
ANYTHING is better than Barry....
man, am i getting spoiled or what???
hi all
You deserve it, dor!
plays mandy 100 times in a row for welki and you thought waterboarding was awful
and i get to drive it to school tomorrow!!!
hello
hi kth
long time, kthdsn
hi, harp
didn't they play mandy in guantanamo?
lol
me me me I want to drive it too you can borrow my saab
Poor misunderstood mandy......
hi kth, we see your mom a lot mroe than you these days. and hi harpjane also
hi harp
hey i drive a saab, too!
hi Harp, and Kate
you can have my audi
They should have locked up Barry Mainlow in Gitmo
I'll take the audi!
used to have bmws, but that was in another time (318i and 528e)
hi dorens, I know, I hardly ever get chance to play these days
LOL ruru!
I hate Saab's
Someone take my "Loser Cruiser"!!!!
I take the T-- no car here.....
mine is "ticket-me" red welki
and it will be clean tomorrow too dawg
your just jealous ruru
jm, this is my 6th saab .. i am an addict
It's got to get better mileage than my cherokee
MY wife had one.. 17K miles and it spent more time on a tow truck than the road
my first -- I buy whatever used car is a deal and a stick
(i am a vehicle addict .. have too many toys)
it does --my son has a cherokee
mine is a stick, too
between 20 and 28 depending on if t is a long highway drive
ALL the tow truck dirvers knew her by first name and sent her xmas cards
i love sticks!
i sold my first saab when the odometer hit 300,000 miles
do you retreive them dorens?
lol, ruru
it's okay if i drive it, but let hubby behind the wheel and watch the gas gauge swing to the other side!
welki lives dangerously
I had a friend with a Jag like that ruru
i live dangerously? how so?
I drive a Lexus truck and like that a lot
the old jags were always in the shop
the new ones are fords....
my dream car is a 1969 jag xke
the new jags, that is...
one of the bad things about living on the east coast rather than the west is the inability to drive fast
driving a Saab with more than 100,000 miles to begin with
his jag was named Baby and origianlly belonged to James Coburn
my husband drove p/u trucks for a while, bought a saab 9/7x and traded it in for an avalanche ... he says he is a "pickup man"
everyone drives fast out here
ci7 clue please?
with the right radar detector, on the right roads, jmc.... i does ok!
my dream car is a 1965 red convertable mustang
most of a movie and most of a wash load
Same
is the ci 7
dorens!
If not that then a 05 or newer Chevy Duramax
love mustangs
i'm a bad girl1
Duramax sounds like a condom brand
but I am eyeing a miata for when I don't need a fron tseat for my 95 year old mother
ex husband had a datsun 280 z... then a porsche 944, both stick, and i drove the he** out of them when i could
very cool dorens
That's what I thought when I first heard it tbh ruru
i'd take the 280z over the 944 ... now if it was a carrera.... lol
Pretty much all the American diesels sound sexual in some way
ooo a porsche my son and were looking at porshe
Look at what I am missing by being a non-driver....
Powerstroke, Cummins, Duramax...
my first car was a 1957 Bel Air
driving is very fun
black...
hello all
help with fi5/20 pls
a cruiser, ruru! beyooootiful car! mine was a 65 chevelle
Love driving...
welki you must have been at dinner with us tonight, ken saying the same thing, denigrating my poor 944 and preferring the 280 z over it. said it was a doctor's wife's car!
but that is why I take the subway so I can feel okay about driving when I do
My first car was a Datsun 510...oy
nice..welki..

That's the kind of clues I need Jacs ..
AsG - that's my motto. How did you know?
that doesn't give life meaning, but it gives YOUR life meaning! :) wow - how deep
Torg - I knew that. Same here many times.
with those deep thoughts, me and Jack Hanley are off to bed - LOL
*poof
okay...clue time :)
I'm being 'an evil stepmother' right now, still being up, which means I probably won;t be up to walk my stepdaughter up to her new school (her 2nd day) later. She needs to know we trust her and to go there for herself. I've made her lunch stuff and left a note to say I'll meet her from school to take her to our local library (that I joined her into yesterday morning).
can i get help with in6,21 please?
'Nigh AsGreen.
in6 = think teeth (or in + anagram of frozen waters)
in6 = to cut into (flesh, as a surgeon or a tooth would do).
Kids are too sheltered these days .. They need to find their way to school and home etc ..
thank you!
Torg - It's a little different with this kid - she's 14, just been kicked out by her Mum and send into an area she doesn't know her way around and where she doesn't know anyone except for me, her Dad and my 2 grown-up kids.
help with the re 7 and re 6,18 *THE LAST ONE

Let them live .. Let them explore .. Let them get from point a to point b on their own and they'll be able to do it better in later life ..
re 7 to a emergency signal
take away electronics until the age of 16!
thank you!
A little guidance is called for .. then let them find their way ..
Torg - I will let her explore once she's sure of the route to school! LOL
* fading * off to bed...night all...
few more clues if you please :)
pini...have a good night...
got 4 left folks
'Night Pink.
can i have a hint for up6,27?
Goodbye Pinikula! I will see you tomorrow in the chat
Some of us are still trying to find our way ..
up 6/27 is up plus se 4/5 a letter in the mail alison45.
Torg, darling, you're just being deliberately obscure now.
thanks min...
okay..hint for ur6,21 please...
plural, alison, or bear-like
20 unauthorised absence from school in a 12 week period at my local high school results in an automatic £50 fine for the parents. I assume the same is not true of the school she just came from in the area where she lived with her Mum.
That ur 6/21 word is pees alison45.
A ur 6/21 word is pees or ur plus si 4/4 word alison45
got that one min..the last one...
thanks min...
yw
Unfortunately for her, kids are checked on the hour, every hour for being present at school. But I think the truanting was 'Mother condoned'. I'm far stricter. My grown-up kids have already told her that they'd have to have had a limb hanging off of be in their death throes, at the very least, to be let off school by me.
(The still 'hate' me for it! LOL. But both are either at or done with Uni. educations now.)
okay...hints for two more folsk...your help is greatly appreciated..op5.12? and up5/16...then I can stop bugging you all
Stepdaugher, for some 4 years now, has been telling me she wants to become an archaeologist. That being so, she needs an education, preferably a uni ending one.
op 5/12 is plural of op 4/5 or op plus a transgression.
op5.12 (2nd) = op + Biblical trangression.
a biblical transgression?
The up 5/16 word is up the opposite of begin alison45
up5.16 is what happens when a container gets stood up and upset.
got the up....
Hi to you Min, 'cos I don't think we've exchanged a 'hello' yet tonight.x
thank you both - ---so back to that biblical transgression...i got nothing...
op 5/16 word is op plus the seven deadly ***s alison45
Hello Jacula! I have been busy playing games & cluing
yeah...thank you...FIREWORKS
Congratulations alison45 on fireworks! Hooray for U!
Min - that kind of life was once mine, but isn't really any more, since I became a Mom again.
Now that alison45 is finished I'm off to bed. Goodnite
thanks for the clues min...and jac...and everyone else
Goodnight to my fellow babblers!I'll see you tomorrow
There I was, sailing along, working for myself and to my own deadlines, waiting for grandchildren to come along, when BAM! I was given a teenager. LOL.
goodnight...
'Nigh Min.
does anyone need clues?
Not me, alison.
hello 9 to go
I've probably cleared the chog with my comments anyway. LOL.
go jacula go...
oooh i'll have to go back and read it, what have you done now, jac?
k, folks...happy happy babbling
Did you mean Harp re 'go', Alison?
Harp - aren't you on my private blog Reader List?
I'm sure you are.
yes..but go for you as well :)
yep jac
shall i go have a peek?
Yeah, well ..
Yes, Jane, do. You're supposed to read it at least weekly. LOL
ali - I'll sleep when I sleep. I'm 52 years old now and so allowed to make the choice.
Torg - yeah, well what?
You're a heckuva mum, Jacs ..
I admire the way you stick to your standards ..
Torg - I'm dong my best to be Th Evil Stepmother. I've told her I'm getting the builders in next week to reinstall a real fire, so she can sweep the ashes. LOL
Heh heh ..
Can't offer her a nice red apple to eat , 'cos she has top and bottom braces on her teeth right now, so apples are a no no.
I like it ..
However, she's enjoying the green grapes. There will be red ones next week. LOL
Little things ..
Torg - no matter what I did to her, if I really did it, rather than just what I do really do, I don't think I could top what her own mother did to her, nor would I want to.
Yea, little things, like reparing her clothes, ironing her clothes (she said to my the other day, 'I'll have to get used to going out uncreased now')
A bit of discipline is a good thing ..
Oh, she gets that, too, Torg. If I dn't like something she's done or doing I will say so. I will also follow up if I've mentioned some punishment for not doing or doing something.
You obviously care, which sets you apart from the great mass of humanity ..
That's what's important ..
Wht I see and hear around me most of the time these days is parents yelling and getting frustrated with kids and then not following up on what they said would happen if the kids did or did not do whatever.
just don't let her hang out with mice or pumpkins, jac
Caring ..
Harp - Dang! I'd just lined up all the mice and made her spend al of last night carbingout the pumpkin. *sigh*
I should go .. I'm being stupid as usual ..
Torg - thanks. But hope it's not apart from most of humanity, otherwise that degrades what it is to be human and feel and care.
Torg - no, you're not.
As for ways of parents discipling kids, the one thing you should not say after a disciplinary statement is Okay? I've had to tell my Ohter Half not to say that (he sees it as a reinforcing word at the end). I've heard teachers saying it in the past, too. It's not a reinforcing word, it ends up with you having a rant, laying down the law and then asking the kid for permission to have done all that.
I'm sorry ..
Torg - sorry for what? Don't b sorry for me. I'm pissed off with stepdaughter's Mum for being such a crap Mum but I certainly don't see the negatives in my life with her daughter. I acknowledge they could be there, but I will try to ride around them.
done, and I"m off! see you tomorrow, or maybe at the flip
That's what eing a Mum is all about, though I do have to say my 2 grown-up kids (25 and 22) have asked me not to overcompensate and be overstrict with a child not of my own blood. LOL. They'll be regularly on hand to dilute me.
Well done Harpp!
My kids have also (indirectly) asked me not to spoil her and have told me what they will NOT share. Aww. xxxx
Pity a 14-year-old placed with me now. I've had enough experience ro know all the tricks in the book.
And I still remember being that age myself.
It's such an awkward age, which is what her unfit to b a mother, mothre couldn't cope with.
OOps, sorry, did I just emote too much?
Just meher now, I guess. W|ell, enjoy the new grid all.
