well, if anyone's awake on Mon 5th, I'll be presenting our options for de4ing with our fiscal crisis before the elected commissioners. I'll be representing the Exec Dir who's on vaca visiting his son...the son sufferred a an accident which revealed a brain tumour. it was excised and he is recovering...the son is a law student in the Georgetown area, and now on a brief respite from chemotherapy...his speech is returning, but has some lingering cognitive lapses, preventing him from enjoying his law studies as much as before...

I find militant anythings, tend to go overboard. A woman stopped me in a parking lot, asked me to sign a petition that we'd not drink milk, eat beef (other meats OK?), or wear leather. I pointed out cows would become extinct, but she assured me farmers would still maintain herds ... as household pets, I guess. Gawd, some people ... but we gotta give everyone their chance to spout off, and the rest of us can exercise our right to ignore them.

My gran looks like Posh Spice, if she was a teenager, she'd be diagnosed as anorexic, she almost refuses to eat. So, at her 6 month doctor appt the other day, mum raised the issue of her being underweight, and the dr asked if gran had excess skin around her waist. It was determined that she hadn't, and therefore the dr dismissed all worry about her being underweight!!
It doesn't inspire confidence, does it?

she's not, really. she eats maybe 1/3 of a salmon fillet and a piece of bread and cheese each day

And she probably has no appetite either, so isn't missing food.

luckily her mental health social worker person knows that perfectly well, and keeps an eye on her. Which is good which doctors like that!

gets along really well, it's wonderful. Mum and I can tell her something till we're blue in the face, and Val just hints at something and gran's instantly in love with the idea :)
It's good that somebody can get through to her. It seems to be standard that old people kind of take umbrage at the very people they have always loved. It's bound to be horrible to be at the receiving end.

Yes, there are DNR protocols in place. There was an inquest this week on a young lady who committed suicide by swallowing anti-freeze, but because she had made a living will, doctors wouldn't act to save her life.

My sister says that there are 2 types of Goldens, the family dog has a calmer disposition (and a nicer coat) and the hunting dog has higher energy. Which type do you have?

So, my experience w/ dogs is limited to having lived with people who have had already-trained well-behaved obedient dogs; I have successfully raised one very well-mannered, obedient (-ish) cat, and I've raised/trained (to the extent that the various animals could be trained) other small animals as pets (a couple of chinchillas, a couple of birds, and currently, 3 baby goats).... but, my point is, I've never raised & trained a dog....
only got 55 so far
I moved in with my boyfriend about a year and a half ago, (KB, that's 17 more than me.... !) and he has a purebred German Shorthaired Pointer that he hunts with....

Tucker's about 5 maybe? ... and it's his second hunting dog. The first hunting dog he had, Monty, well... Gregg still gets teary-eyed when he tells "best dog ever" stories about him; he was hit by a car when he was 3 or so. Gregg had just broken his back in a work accident and was having a series of surgeries and was living in his parents house, pretty-much unable to do anything but walk in the park and stay at home...

and, in his devastated state, even though he knew better, Gregg decided to get tucker as a puppy WAAAAAY too soon (like, a month or two maybe) after Monty was killed

When Gregg was living at his parents house after his accident (and monty was too), a family member didn't realize the dog wasn't in the bedroom with Gregg & didn't realize the front screen door to the house hadn't closed all the way behind him, and Monty ran out.... yeah, both GSPs.

Some lines of hunting dogs are more hyper and need to be worked .. and that energy is nervous energy that needs to be calmed by extra exercise.
So my first question is, can you think of any obedience training methods that might work in this situation? A not-puppy adult dog, trained for hunting, behavior problems like I just described?
It is also that he is a puppy and he needs some time to develop into a Monty for Greg

He HAS gotten a little better since I moved in (according to Gregg) and since we got him neutered last fall (since Gregg knew he didn't want to breed him)
His bad behavior is only too much energy that needs to be harnessed. this dog needs to work.
Neutering probably helped a lot.
Yeah, he's built for it Ru, you're so right about that.... He's probably like 2% body fat, in such good shape, and well his breed is built for constant activity

Blue, we have a 10 y/o dog we got from a relative of DH's who they were going to put down because he was misbehaving and they didn't have time for him. He peed on our floor once, and our old dog got after him and he's never done it since. We've put the old dog down (had to, and miss her terribley); but this dog is now well-behaved
so they really do watch each other's behavior, even if the emphasis by the owners is placed on specific training (for hunting or something)....

the problem with a puppy is that neither dog would obey or pay attention to greg and it wouldn't rsesolve anything.
Well, something I thought of just as I was telling you the (really loooong, sorry!) story, is that we might end up needing to put it on hold for financial reasons... one of our vehicles died & had to be replaced unexpectedly last month, so we've had to cut back spending in a LOT of areas...
so hopefully that will take the getting-another-purebred-dog option off the table for a little while, and it won't become a stressful issue between us

i got our tax assessment today. the city is bumping up the price of the house so they can tax us more.

Wow, lbd. I've always been told MT was better than MN for taxes (our house was assessed less this ye** so our taxes are $25 less too)
it's ridiculous cuz housing here is in the slumps, and the "estates" aren't selling, so us Po' folk get to make up the difference. Not to mention out of state owners who don't pay the city taxes, only state tax.
Why would out of state owners get off on not paying city taxes?
i've never figured that part out, Nef. but they don't pay city/county taxes, just state taxes
