i love it when we all work together to solve grids
now if we could just find that last T7!
How many t7's do you have already?
6 if i counted right
ti7.32 I am more worn out than you ?
nope, it was a ta7, just found it!!!
i have that one
Hooray for you!
pavement + crabgrass
fireworks
ty hursh
Congrats!!
now to post the list without crashing browser
finally fireworks ty ty hurshy and dart
Congrats Volley! You 3 make a great team
close and reopen hurshy; sometimes that helps
yw congrats volley
ty I surely agree lynxx
what helps is remembering to do it properly :)
yes, we do rather make a good team
I got behind on the t's... slowed me down
lol hurshy
we get a system going
I still have problems with the words starting with vowels... menopausal brain doesn't help
plus my hubby's aunt, who lives with his mom went in to hospital with pneumonia, and they now think she also had a heartattack...
have to get pneumonia under control before they can do too much testing on her heart... so a bit scary
LOL, bj's list was already there!
hard times Volley, hope she comes through OK
yipes are you kidding?
we should have looked first
me, too lynxx
his mom has plans to leave town for Christmas, so hubby will be the one to drive 1.5 hours away... this week could be tricky
I have been sick, so can't go... she doesn't need my germs (or vice versa)
thanks, hurshy
and we got snow today
with the bad weather you mean Volley?
yes
and tricky for him --- work, having to drive his mom to airport, daughter coming... all sorts of details to work through
his mom makes all these plans and then just expects him to take care of them
not to be mean, but it drives me nuts
tht's enough to do without working!
my parents never did that, so it makes life difficult (and she only lives about 5 miles away)... a little too convenient
exactly
hubby won't ever tell her no
most of the time I keep my mouth shut, but every once in awhile I say what I think, so thanks for letting me vent :)
Well he is probably the only one who could say no to her, so I guess if he wants to carry the load....
How old is she Volley, and his Aunt?
here's one tiny example... for my birthday in Sept; she called and left a message on our answering machine, telling me she was taking me to lunch on my birthday (I already had plans); she never asks, she just tells...
yes... mother will be 76 on Jan 2, and I think his aunt is 70 ... can't remember exactly ... but I think there is at least 5 years diff
mmm...its hard to keep quiet sometimes isn't it
so very true... my tongue gets bloody... pray often for God to muzzle my mouth (and that does help(
lol
my hubby is elder son... he does on the sh... and his brother is the favorite
his brother just spends more money on her
ok, now I'll hush
may I help anyone find any words?
would listing the 8's help?
yes, thank you Dee
May as well go with the flow Volley, possibly not much you can do 'cept be ready with the slippers and a nice hot toddy for your husband when he finally makes it home each day
I'm halfway so will take a break..BBL
8's are: ad, ci; ea; ed; en x 2; he x 2; in; it; ta; th; ti; wr

hello everybody
I'm getting the hang of this but VERY slowly
here it's 11:12AM
dart, that sounds like heaven to me!
where are you ruby? europe?
Good morning everybody. I hope the weathers not too bad wherever you all are!
phantom quatrain
thanks Josh... that one hadn't bugged me yet, LOL.
I cannot get to work today due to the weather... mass transit bus service has been suspended "until further notice", whatever that means.
i think we should declare war on snow
It looks nice, but it really is inconvenient.
I figure because it is Sunday they won't be rushing to resume bus service.
Hi Soodle, and everyone.
hardly a flake here in nc - but my friends in northern va are speaking in biblical terms
Of course I called work to let them know and they were like.... "so, you can't get in"... I was like, "No, my broom is also out of service"... Really... there is something wrong with people.
Yes... I just saw that VA got hit pretty hard.
The Jersey shore got whalloped as well... almost 2 feet!
that's a lot of snow
i would happily take about 4 inches of that off your hands
2 feet! Uk comes to a standstill with 2 inches.
Oh yeah.... my mother is having a cow!
We got about a foot where I am in Northern NJ.
Some parts of the US come to a standstill at the 2" mark, as well... usually not us, though.
Yeah... 2 to 4 is nice... anything over that is a pain in the patootie.
our local school system shut down on friday, i think out of empathy for our chilly brethren in neighboring states
LOL.... last night my daughter asked me if there would be school on Monday! We do snow removal fairly well here, so I told her not to count on it!
Really, I so don't care... if I can't get to work it's no great loss, as I hate my job anyway, LOL.
to be fair to our schools, our entire state only has a half dozen or so snowplows, so if the snow does tumble down upwards of a foot, it will take a solid 24 hours to get the main thoroughfares plowed
My New Year's resolution is to find a different one... I don't care what they are saying about the economy, etc... there has to be something better out there.
My husband once got snowed in in Nashville, TN because they had more than an inch plus some ice... they really just have no provisions/equipment for it.
just a week ago we were having 60F/17C degree days
and probably next week as well
Go ahead Josh.... rub it in! They are saying that the temp will be dropping here tonight... so tomorrow our problem should be ice!
i hope it is cleared up by a few days past christmas as i plan on driving all the way up to N.S.
That's quite a drive... hope the weather does cooperate.
phantom cithern
Hi Josh, swap 2 letters around
hello everyone
Ooo. thanks Lynn
Ooo. thanks Lynn
Ooo. thanks Lynn

Hi BabbleRabble
Hello
Good morning everyone
I alone am here ... T.Zone music playing in background.
Is anyone here?
hi mudd
josh where are you in nc
Hi everyone
hi brookie
hi sue
either this puzzle is too difficult today, or i'm too sick to think straight
are you snowed in, brookie?
I'm snowed in in Philly at my parents' house. Need to return to Delaware by the end of the day. How about you, Une?
nothing here in Nashville
that's good to hear
If the temps stay cold throughout the week, at least we'll have a white xmas!
glad weather's cooperating here -- daughter and her boyfriend driving here from Ann Arbor
I think people will have a white Xmas all over the world this year! LOL
Wow -- how long of a drive is that?
USA but also France, England, Scotland, etc.
either my car has been stolen or it's buried in my driveway.
it's not a bad drive -- about 8 hrs -- then they're staying 6 days
good luck finding your car, lawyer! :-)
lawyer, if your car was stolen, i give kudos to the thieves for commiting their crime in such inclement weather
strangely, i dreamt last night that my car was stolen...
If they stole it, they could've at least cleaned off the driveway!
agreed, lawyer, thieves are usually adept at cleaning things out
100 to go . . . taking a break -- BBL -- byeee *poof*

Morning snow prisoners
thanks again for the clues, lynxxx, and hi hego!
Good morning/day to all. Peri--I have been worried about you, Dan, JMC, JBV, etc, with the snowstorm.
hi Scrabbler!
Hi Scrabs, did you get snow?
Hego & I just walked through the Babble gates together!
No new snow for us. I wish we had gotten some!
morning Scrabs
We have about 20 inches!!
Fun, fun Hego!!
How is Sebastian today?
He seems 100% better--very active, begging (on hind feet) for morning snacks...I am so happy. He had me quite worried on Friday.
Yes, I know. But that's good news.
good morning babble friends -- from siberia!!!
It's scary when our kids/pets are ailing and cannot tell us how they feel.
LOL Hi Trif.
Hi Trif! Please deliver some snow to us. How much did you get?
we are at high dr. zhivago status....snow is still pelting down, cannot really say how deep it is yet, as it is quite drifty and blowy right now.
totally bagging church, and hunkering down for a nice day of hanging with the kids, making comfort food, and wrapping gifts, that sort of thing. I LOVE puttering days! Oh, and Primo and I will have to figure out how to use the snow blower. that will be fun!
How many words today?
Where are you Trif?
massachusetts
253 words
253 grant
TY
Has the snow stopped there?
YW grant
not in the least
Not here in NJ either.
I just look at the radar map for Boston, on weather.com, wowee!!!!
You better get that blowy thing figured out, LOL.
And get a big stick to use to clean out the blower--never insert fingers!
quick story about why I love bostonians so much: the city has issued a new law, whereby people are no longer allowed to leave items in a parking spot, to block other from using it. the law says things like lawn chairs other items left out will be collected by the garbage companies and removed. took the tough old townies TWO seconds to figure this one out - they now fill the parking spots with things the garbage companies won't remove - old mattresses, old computers, etc. --I about ROLLED when I read that!
and I am happily trotting off to the PB - worth it!
That's very funny. Good for Boston.
PB hmmmm...
don't worry about me and the snow blower/finger thing. I am very, very careful, but thanks scrabbler!
Scrabbler is the voice of reason in all things.
I know, and thank God! Scrabbler, you could have your retirement covered if only there was some way for you to collect on all the free advice you so generously give in the chog!
True, true.
I am the Safety Officer for Babble Land.
And Chief Medical Officer, along with kje + Bubba
I want to be your nurse. It could be the best job I ever had!
yes, let's see - we have scrabbler for CMO, JMC takes care of the legal end, Crossy takes care of handyman duties, Torgone gives computer advice....who am I am missing?
Phantom = tyranny, and, seriously, I saw a 9 mo old baby girl in the office last week and her name = Tyranny!
I suppose Jacula is in charge of parenting advice....
We have many experts here in Babble Land!
NO WAY - tyranny? that is the WORST
Pretty bad
oh, we have a vet, don't we?
I,ve been doing a pediatric clinic and it's amazing what people name their kids.
and babble rabble take care of all the impossible words, and he is sort of our resident philosopher, wouldn't you say?
I don't think they are even smart enough to know what it means and what they have done to their daughter. The rural poor/ignorant are an interesting culture out here--hillbilly types, northernmost Appalachian Mtns
Haz's hubby is a vet.
Jesdraggon = vet
do you find that names come in waves? my mom, a retired physician, used to have, say, 11 Brookes in a row, and then there was the "year of Olivia's"
Aren't many of the names just horrid, Hego? So many kids are not only doomed at conception but then they get odd names
I've had a long career and never did pedi before. I love it.
Last several years = Olivia, Sophia, Isabella, Owen, Zachary, Aidan, Jaden .... and varied spellings
Trif you can tell people's age by their names.
The kids are wonderful, aren't they, Hego?
i have a bigger issue with names that mean something obvious - they always seem cruelly ironic in adulthood - 300 pound girls name willow, clumsy girls named Grace, big lumberjack types named skip...
True, Trif
Love the kids.
good morning and happy snow day! (too bad it's a sunday, I could really use a day off tomorrow)
Hi JBV! How are you? You are one of the people I have been worried about!
oh, the "varied spellings" chaps my ass no end, I am sorry to say - in tertiare's school we enjoy several Rylee, Riley, Reilly, Rilee, Reillee, Rileigh combos
Then there is the story of a girl named Le-a. The teacher kept pronouncing it Lea. The mother came in to complain that the teacher was making fun of the girl. "Her name is Ledasha - the dash is not silent" she says.
no worries, scrabbler, we're fine - it's beautiful. Only my son is supposed to go to work at 12:00. We're hoping the boss will say the store is closed and he can stay home
As a Lynda, I am very sensitive to varied spellings..."It's Lynda with a Y." Then it is spelled Lydia and I am called Lydia.
Otherwise there's a lot of shoveling in his future
rofl godthaab
Hahahaha, godthaab!!!
yes, well, I have a capital B in the middle of my ElizaBeth, so I am no one to complain either, I suppose....
I noticed, trif
good morning all and good laugh first thing this morning godthaab!
Hi Nonnie
morning nonnie!
morning nonnie!
I'm just plain Helen and people mess that up.
and my kids real names are weird, too, but I didn't make them up, or anything - they are all actual names
I had an Aunt Helen
Our last name is "Light" and you wouldn't believe how many people ask me to spell it :o)
mine is easy, but for some reason people cannot remember to put the E on Joanne
Folks put in 2 l's. lol
I love your son's name--one of my faves. Maybe a future bunny will have that name.
hego, i love the name Helen SO MUCH - it was my beloved grammy's name, and I campaigned HARD for it for one of the girls. Sadly, their last name is Elliott, and my grammy went by "nellie", and I couldn't see a lifetime of calling a girl Nellie Elliott, so we left it
besides, people in boston shorten everyone's name, dooming a child to a lifetime of "Hi Hel!" -- um....no
thanks scrabbler! :) I love it too!
names are so important, one of the teachers in my program just wrote a beautiful piece in our professional newsletter about teachers who do not even TRY to pronounce names correctly (we have many students from non-English backgrounds) -
lol trif
My nickname is Helly
My Aunt Helen was really "Elena" but it was changed when she came over from Italy.
herit
Hi SeaSpray!
TY for clue, SS
morning all sorry for the strange entry lol
Hey, scrabs that was my mom's name.
Good morning sea!
I hate stupid girly names. dooms a girl to a lifetime of stupid. "hello, I am your lawyer, Star Twinkle." yeah, that inspires confidence!
I always wished they had called me that also.
I just had to enter into this conversation. My friend was a teacher and had a student Female (pronounced Fa MAl - E. Parent couldn't come up with a name so left female! Now that seems a little unfair.
HI sEA
It happens more than you think, RKB
ugh. poor female!
really? wow...
some people are rediculous when it comes to names
As a pediatrician, I sometimes want to write a prescription for a legal change of name due to a future of challenges with birth name
RKB, we also know of many parents who are illiterate and are at the mercy of hospital clerks, etc., some of them cannot read the birth certificate and don't know what it says until they come to register at school
good morning
Hi Harp
we know a woman in ireland whose last name is Cox and her parents named her "attracta" which *IS* an actual irish name, but geesh, come on! give the girl a chance, eh?
Good point, JBV.
Hi Jane
I had another acquaintaince who name dher girls Cinnamon and Candy. Cute I guess.
And Mercedes, Lexus + Porsche in 1 family!
I never understood how someone could not come up with a name. It really gets under my skin when every male child is named after the father. We have a fellow who has fathered about 8 sons with about that many different women and ALL are named Charles...Charles II, Charles III, Charles IV. I think someone lost the concept of the generational thing.
my cousin is a musician, and named his girls Cadence and Melody, which I actually thought was pretty cool
Once met a Pleasant Talk
saw Poppy, Lovey and Dovey on Dr. Oz show, they were sisters
"I always wanted to have a Mercedes?"
Oh my gosh...this could be the subject of a book.
Nonnie, that is pure narcissism, me thinks
Cadence and Melody are nice
there is also a boy in the next town over whose last name is Baum, and the parents named him Adam. I think that is so mean
You can talk about this forever.
And a Kurt Lurps
worked with guy named Vester -- his siblings were Hester and Lester
"not everyone has been in a mercedes" seems more likely
I have seen several Cadence's over the last few years
I went to school with a Harry Dingus.
Quite a few years ago, a long time city administrator legally changed his name to Urban Renewal
no lickety, i see
Cadence is a lovely, old fashioned name, isn't it?
Oh well back to Babble...I'm not far from Trifioso and still in Blizzard conditions. Good decorating day.
I know three kids named Babylon, Niniveh and Jericho!
I had a patient named Kellie Kelly
No licety! Again!
Hi BR! LOL
Lickety even
ooh, I like Jericho. that's a cool weird name....
hursh posted stats in Babanon
ooh, and no licety either?
Your storm isn't even on our front page of the newspaper.
ok... Donald MacDonald !
off to the church musician vortex bbl
probably just jealous, scrabbler! :)
our storm ended this morning, we have 20+ inches
William William..the same teacher friend who gave us a yearly report on names!
Down the street was a Richard Dick.
sea spray, how long did the storm last?
Where are you, SS?
Us also Sea 20 and counting
i went to school with Patsy Titsworth
went to school with Thomas Thomas
The last names Dick, Gay, etc should be outlawed
LOL, Une!!
in Maryland Scrabbs
lol une ahahahhaaa
one of my best friends, scrabbs!
I vote for outlawing titsworth
:-D
Now I am really in a giggle mood!
We had a Mister Growcock who custodian at the high scool
Where in MD, Sea? I have family in Waldorf, Huntingtown, and Baltimore!
about 36 hours trifi
Talk about giggle!
her dad owned Titsworth Motors
would you want to be named Harry Dick?
My mammogram involved 2 titsworths
my friend cheryl works with a guy named Peter Rickman, which is a fine name. except that the email convention in their office is first initial, last name....oh dear
hego! LOL
Hi Jean
trif LOL!!!
LOL scrabbler!!!
scrabbs :-D
lol trif
Nonnie i am about 30 miles northwest of Baltimore
That was his name!
I have a friend in Lutherville, MD
and we all know the worst name EVER - mike something???
thats funny trif
How many inches now, Sea?
20 couple
i don't think waldorf got as much
yes hunt
Well, I hope you have wonderful "snow days" and not much worry from it!
my friend Jay swears that school administrators are born, not made - his school vice principal was Mr. Asseltine, and the principal was Mr. Cramp. I giggle every time I think of that
i'm not even going to mention Marie Overfelt.
Ophelia Bumpps?
I don't really have to go anywhere, i am going to bake cookies with my daugther (if she can get here) and wrap gifts
Seymour Butz
this is very entertaining - but must tear myself away to do some Christmas-y things, see you later
Trif! LOL
I work with a Mr. Raper.
bye bye jbv, take care
oh, there are lots of "Rapers" in my hometown -- Funks too
Are we supposed to be finding words?
Mr Dick and Miss Ball two of Hubby's teachers who dated. LOLOL
my friend Claudia dated Harry Butz
LOL hego!!!
ohmygod, hego!
a vein in my lip is twitching. is that weird?
Words? Oh, that. Yes, I guess so.
they absolutely need to get married, and she needs to hyphenate
I also worked for a Mr. Back and Mr. Pack.
i will take jbv's cue, must do something constructive, thats funny hego (the dick and ball thing) lol
Wonderful, baking cookies and watching the snow :o)
I'm going to bake too eventually.
a counselor at the camp where I went as a child was named sue, and she married a lovely man named Patrick Keeney. So what is she now?
have fun all
two of the curators at the museum I used to work in were Dr Cocks and Dr Balls
bye bye sea
Hurshy, just a little muscle spasm, like what happens in our eyelids sometimes
my friend has a cousin named charity. she married a mr. case and took his name. said she thought it wouldn't be a big deal, thought only kids made fun of funny names.
Nice veggie. :-D
clearly she doesnt
hursh, are you serious?!
yep.
clearly your cousin does not babble, hurshy!
Yikes going thru life as Charity Case!
not MY cousin
I have to admit...this was a good laugh day. Thanks for adding a little cheer to the blizzard!
that is cracking me up....charity case! omg....
also knew a lisa who married a man whose last name was lisa - i think they're divorced now
Fun, fun ;-)
have a friend Susan Hayslip who married Mr. Hay
my dad had a secretary called Kris who married Mr Kross
LOL!!!
2 local orthopedists = Dr Bone, Dr Armstrong
jump, jump
That made her name shorter, at least.
We had a Dr Stitch.
there is a dentist in CT named dr. hurt
ouch!
Dr. Mangel another CT dentist
I'd avoid him
oh, grant, are you in CT too?
no, Massachustts
...setts
i lived in mass for... let's see... 16 years total
that's half my life
did you hurshy? I don't think I knew that - where, dear one?
no, 15, i have miscounted.
i lived in northboro til i was 9. went to college in williamstown and stayed an extra 2 years.
small world time, Trif. I'm on Mt. Blue St.
GET OUT - seriously????
YUP
you don't plow by any chance? :)
ha
Wish I did
coming soon: big babble meet up in norwell! Grant and I live it up at the tinker's son! woooo!
ugh, when will my lip stop twitching?!?!
Have you tried the new place yet?
It must be annoying, hursh
not personally, but lots of the neighbors have - apparently the breakfast on sunday mornings is wicked good, but pricey. they said it is way worth it, though - musicians come in, lots of happy people. it's great
kinda. but at least it's not a symptom. was afraid perhaps i have violated the max throat drop instructions and caused some disaster.
I guess the Queen of Soul is not a noun --yet
hursh, I just chatted with you on FB if you can flip over there
if she started with a U she would be, kaplan
Hi Kaplan
Hi Kap
Kaplan, are you in a snow area?
how many of the i words are in's, please?
well Tri we got the snow!!!
Yeah, it snowed- a light fluffy snow
yes we did, speed
I need to finish Xmas shopping
20 inches of light, fluffy snow.
trif -- in x 5
merci une!

hego after the first few shovel fulls it does not feel light and fluffy
For sure speed
FYI just copied the stats from BabAnon to my profile
does the 8 build off the 5?
Is lickety still not working?
Hi SPeedfreak SIs...had nice time last nighe. You just missed a hilarious dialog on names..go back and read form 8 to 8:30! You working in the schools ought to appreciate.
not today Kap
no, it does not. never mind!
kaplan, stats are in Babanon and in my profile
hey RKB Did Mom go and did you guys make it home before snow
I have to print them out then?
oh the hardship!!!
i just line them up next to the grid like lickety's . . .
Kap doesn't like that!
ata LOL
Any excuse- look, I already skipped the gym because of the light fluffy snow
Mom stayed home. Beat the snow...home by 10:30 with a quick stop to see Mom. Will call later sometime to fill you in.
My gym is closed.
How do you do that une- is it easy?
Well hego has an excuse then- I am thinking I will go this afternoon
looking forward to hearing about it glad mom stayed home she was getting sick over seeing the other mom
kaplan, you know how to make page smaller by clicking on the icon in the upper right, right?
yeah
icon is next to the "x" that allows you to close the page
well, you can grab the edge and make it as narrow as you like, then line it up
Yes, then what/
Hi Speedfreak + Ata.....Hurshy, FB just froze up on me!
okay -- time to address snow blowing, round one. I will be back later to finish, assuming I still have all my digits!
then you have the stats next to the grid and your word list
good luck tri
thought that's what you wanted to do, hego . . .
morning Scrabbler
80 to go -- must go do something productive! Later!
That's a good idea Une. Thanks I'd forgotten about that.

Ata, don't you go crazy when one of your pets is ill? I cannot stand it!
that assumes there's a brain there ...
bet she spanks her bunnys
It is therapeutic, Crossy. The bacon has made your brain hard withplaques.
what was wrong with sbastian?
glad Sebastian is feeling better, Scrabs
I hate it really more than anything else, Scrabs cos I can't explain that I'm trying to help them
He was ill on Friday--not eating, very inactive, runny nose, not pooping (<--bunnies must keep pooping or GI tract causes potentially fatal problems).
TY, Peri
saw his pix on FB, he is a cutie, Scrabs
I have to push half of a tablet into his mouth twice daily and he spits it out 3-4 times before he finally chews it
I bet!
help with en8's, anyone?
Isn't he the cutest thing, peri? 7 1/2 yrs ago I went into a pet store to buy supplies and I walked out with him!
ah, the wesley bear.
Did you have a fun conversation with him, Hurshy?
the norland estate in its en8 is left to john and fanny
yes, he continually makes progress on reading
TY, hursh!
morning all\
Hi Sg

Wow, hurshy. I have not seen many kids like you, him.
BRB, I must get the pancakes cooking. Who wants some?

OK, huge platter of pancakes are coming up. I made some yesterday, with new baking mix, and they were heavenly!

th8 - british cinema, adjective
th8 is an extension of the cinema type place

it's so cute too, he loves to try to learn - we'll get on skype and he'll say "words, auntie!" cause i have lots of words i've written on like flash cards for him.
ta8 - wesley loves looking for waldo so much that one of his where's waldo books has now become quite ta8
ty hursh
of course he has also memorized where waldo is on each page in that one so it is no longer really looking. luckily he has more than one.
working on the th8, have the th7
it ends in the far right upper corner
if i knew wesley this would be easy:/
aha, was aiming for the wrong corner, ty
change the last vowel on the 7 and add a consonant
lol crossy
got it, thanks
just think of what happens to a book when a kid uses it a lot, crossy - it's not particular to wesley!
loved books can be quite ta****** and torn
one of the benefits of living in an pat is not having to shovel out the driveway
alas, I now live in a house
ty hurshy
wow, have all the 8's now
hi, i'm back again and thanks for all those clues -
hurshy, scrolling back to read about your nephew - that's a magical moment when they go from reading whole words to working out the alphabetic code on their own - so fascinating to see

Lemon on your pancakes?
TY, JBV.
i'll have sugar and lemon too please
Is that a UK thing, putting lemon on pancakes?
lemon and sugar is British traditional for british pancakes
probably
I like butter + syrup, usually maple.
Fresh berries are great too, if available
Lemon and sugar on pancakes is magic!
but for crepe pancakes, not american pancakes
we have received four separate baskets of Harry and David fruit this week - apples/pears, etc. - there's no way we can eat them all before they start to turn, so I'm cooking them -
But lemon is sour
Good for you, JBV
True Ata. Was forgetting. OK, maple syrup then, in the true transatlantic spirit.
yes they have to be thin and rolled, but if we are speaking thicker pancakes loads of maple syrup for me please
lemon adn sugar is perfect on crepe-pancakes
*Drips maple syrup down chin and onto keyboard.

I have that too, Bo
smart blance butter - "pam"?
Astor had a summer home in what is now Astoria (Long Island City), the owner of the property renamed it after Astor in the hope he would endow a girls' school
TY for history lesson, JBV
bbs
Astoria OR - the city was named after the American investor (and first millionaire) John Jacob Astor. His fur trading company founded Fort Astoria at the site in 1810.
*getting smarter with history class he4*
in our Astoria, the original owner of the property, Hallett, is more well-known (more places named after him)
your turn for an interesting fact :P
In addition to the replicated Fort Clatsop, a popular point of interest is the Astoria Column, a tower 125 feet (38 m) high built atop the hill above the town, with an inner circular staircase allowing visitors to climb to see a panoramic view of the town, the surrounding lands, and the Columbia flowing into the Pacific. The column was built by the Astor family in 1926 to commemorate the region's early history.
When I was in St. Petersburg, the Russian one, I stayed at the Astoria Hotel. Its main claim to fame seems to be that the poet Nekrasov committed suicide in one of the rooms. So, where would the name have come from in Russia?
Most popular accounts hold that the name "Buffalo" is a corruption of the French phrase beau fleuve, "beautiful river," a phrase said to have been exclaimed by French explorers upon seeing the Niagara River.
that's a great story, scrabbler, very likely
well ... the Russians were very into Art Deco, and Astor was around that time ...
Hi Erda--I saw your name in the grid earlier and now you are he4
The hotel was built in 1912
Hi Scrab!
astor must have imported a lot of furs from Russia - was probably prominent there too
Fur -- of course!!
it's also just a very glamorous name in those times; if you wanted to create an amazing swanky hotel in St Petersburg, what better to call it
Most popular accounts hold that the name "Buffalo" is a corruption of the French phrase beau fleuve, "beautiful river," a phrase said to have been exclaimed by French explorers upon seeing the Niagara River.
he was the bill gates of his time - the richest man alive!
just had a sense of deja vu
The Olmsted Park and Parkway System is the hallmark of Buffalo's many green spaces. Three-fourths of city park land is part of the system, which comprises six major parks, eight connecting parkways, nine circles and seven smaller spaces. Begun in 1868 by Frederick Law Olmsted and his partner Calvert Vaux, the system was integrated into the city and marks the first attempt in America to lay out a coordinated system of public parks and parkways. The Olmsted designed portions of the Buffalo park system are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are maintained by the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy.
Sorry, I had pasted the same paragraph in twice.
that Olmstead fellow got around, too - designed Central Park in NYC
we should figure out to get accredited as Babble University - and issue diplomas in odd and random facts
And have a course called Babblets + Other Obscure Words
we could issue culinary degress -with all the recipes flying around
Buffalo was once home to Pratt & Lambert, gobbled up by Shwern-Williams in 1996 and products they made have declined ever since - my only knowledge of Buffalo, besides proximity to Niagra
lol
and parenting classes and counselling courses
becayuse we all pour it out here from time to time
not to mention medical degrees
even home improvement, right scrabs?
may i share my wonderful news with you all

oh, yes, jacq, eagerly waiting to hear..
i had a scare, that lasted 7 awful weeks, i had a lump in my breast and my doc was concerned after the mamogram that there were cancerous changes
i got the all clear this week
it is a fibroadenoma, it will still grow but is benign
Applause for jacq!!!
i cried like a baby when he told me it was ok
WOW, jacq - that is a great Christmas present! congratulations - we're all breathing better for you
so many tests and biopsies
christma will be wonderful
never heard of fibroadenoma - what are they recommending? just wait and see?
wait and see, if it starts to grow rapidly then they will remove it
Congrats jacq. I am so happy for you.
Woweee, Jacq!
me too sixty, me too
Fibroadenoma = common benign breast tumor.
living under a cloud like that is extremely exhausting, you must be so relieved
i was so worried i couldn't even think properly
Twice I have found breat masses, freaked out, turned out to be OK. You realize that your life could take a very different and scary course.
i get lumps anyway, i have fibrocystic breast tissue, but this one was different
it's been 24 years i have been dealing with breast lumps, and each one is a worry
taking notes, toward my Babble Univ. degree - on fibroadenoma
yay yay Jacq!

thanks nbt and nbs
samantha super clues! getting them all! ty
i hear ya loud and clear mkg..couldnt agree more
thanks! and you're welcome.
mkg - like you, i no longer watch/listen to news - too damn depressisng
wow! got the it and the 8!
mkg, I don't think the problem is that you're not a liberal any more; I think it's that there isn't a party that represents libreals any more.
there's not a party that represents the people - only interest groups
haallelujah, bo
have two e 8s and one i 8 and one ti 8. would love clues for other 8s.
there's a ta8 you don't have--past tense of the ta6, to tear up
samantha you may be right........i see obama as weak internationally too. he actually apologised for what we did in WW2! we saved europes skins and he apologised??????he is a weak wimp........he should be proud of being an american and proud that we destroyed nazi germany. why did he apologise???
still 111 words left. ugh.
8s I have are ad, er, ed, enx2, hex2, in, it, ta, th, ti,
Hold on. America didn't win the war on its own, even though you might like to rewrite history. Remind me again, the war started in 1939. When did America join in?
and every country did things not to be proud of in any war. That's war for you
th7,8 Shaakespeare's Globe Th***** (brit var) + adj
I missed that, mkg. I got tired of the far right slamming him for not being jingoistic enough and tuned out foreign policy--even though, constitutionally, that's the only real power a Pres. has.
ever hear of Lend/Lease Haz? we were holding you up well before we actually started fighting
got the th 8. ty.
you held us up, we held you up. no-one can win a war on their own
grant, I cannot for the life of me get an 8 out of that
though we all try
Of course America has to be credited for its role in the war. Just don't suggest that she was the only one fighting.
right atalante, but should the u.s. apologise to europe? for what?
tis the season to be jolly!
How about apologising for screwing up the chat! This is NOT a place for this discussion!
we have NOTHING to apologize for
she wasnt the only one for sure. no one said that. the issue is that obama apologised for american actions in ww2. what did he apologise for? we came in and helped win the war.
make adj with The **e Man Cometh
political discussions do come and go in here sometimes, hoot, and have for as long as I've been around
dont know the man cometh
d'oh! of course, grant, don't know how I missed that. Thanks!
Not this bad! Out of hand and interferring!
never said anyone in an alliance should apologise to anyone else
USA - Amer**a
interfering with what, exactly?
i like discussing politics. i don't like ugliness
what does Obama think he needs to apologise for?
the puzzle, the cluing - hopeless -bbl
the issue, atalante, seems to be that he *did* apologize (I'm taking word for that, didn't hear it myself) and no one seems to know what for.
Absolutely the worst kind of apology! LOL
ah, goodbye then hoot. I wasn't having trouble following it myself. Sorry you are.
didn't he explain why he was apologising?
if we didn't hear it, and don't know what for, then how on ea*** can we criticize the apology?
I think you'd have to ask mkg. I didn't hear it myself
i should go find the speech. he made some statements about american actions during ww2 being faulty..to me it was bizarre. he is evasive about specifics in all his stalks. so are all the politicians.........
why don't you go see what he actually said :)
what is the letter count for the hi words please? I only have hi4
i read it at the time which was long ago. sorry all. wish i could quote it. but dont know now the exact words. and in egypt he also was cowering. the tone of what he says is always to appease the other side. i guess that is what i dont like. i feel there is no backbone to him.
and hi5
Harp, the only H that intersects with the I has three words
never mind, got em all (hi6)
i disagree. I feel there is much our country has done for which we could be apologetic. He is wise to try to extend a hand to the rest of the world. coyboy diplomacy has not gotten us very far
hear, hear. Dorens!
thank you dorens, "mission accomplished" echos around the world and we should apologize for THAT
hah! coyboy =coWboy
i have hi 4 and 5 only. hmmm
LOL Harp--I must agree there
Was it deGaulle who wished aloud that he could remove all Americans from France, and was the asked if he meant to include all the ones buried there?
mkg, have you heard of baseballs designated hi6 rule?
no.
a lot of countries have a lot to apologise for over the years
yeppers, grant, it was!
OK. In baseball, you have a pitcher, a catcher and a hi6--does that help?
the hi6 is the one at-bat
Hi All. Its so cold here, but no Snow! How many of you all got snow?
how many in words are there?
got it.
no snow here in my section of Montana
super clue samantha
Ooooh, if its going to be cold, you might as well have snow.
we have plenty here in NJ
i wondered when we would use the double cons. other than the space under the roof of a house i hadnt used it.
5 in words
the snow is gorgeous here in maryland. totally gorgeous.
I'm in Texas. We get snow in Central Texas once every year or two, and then for not more than a day if it sticks at all
is there snow now in texas?
Well, I will never have true cold, but its 43 now. and I am not enjoy ing that.
that does it, i'm getting a list.....
I doubt it. Even places that get snow regularly (Dallas, Houston, Amarillo) tend to get it later in the year, though it is cold
no snow in south Texas we hardly ever get any.
we seldom have snow in dec. it has been a good cold month and i am happy. dont want global warming.
Don't the places along the coast get it? I wsa told this AM by a Houstonite that it snows there sometimes, and I know snow in Dallas is nearly a yearly phenomena
hello. Have learned that we here got the most snow of anywhere out of this storm.
yes, Dec snow is rare
esp in this quantitiy
GOD IS PUNISHING WASHI -- Oh, sorry, I was channeling oral roberts for a moment there
DC, you and My Mom really got it, and Dan2 and gosh, I seem to know a lot of people in the VA area.
LOL samantha :D

Very funny Samanta!!!
My mom about 1.5 hours N or DC got about 14 inches...
Friends in North Jersey said they got about 5 inches

I really wish I could go and have a white Christmas, but, I am happy to be living away from it. I'm about to post my birding photos from yesterday....

It's a bit unexpected, haven't seen this much snow for a while.
is her fur long enough that she looks like loads of white bobbles are stuck to her?
great-grandma used to re**** socks.
Everyone has snow! Except us southerners, how nice!
No, she was trimmed recently....
thanks for the ar haz and hi
Hello, Dorens, you're welcome.
our Kiwi and Oz friends don't have snow
lucky! Hobbit gets to looking like she has white bobbly socks on
Well, yes, this is true DC, but if they did, there and in SA, it would be the wrong time of year.
It's nice, dry, powdery snow.
a friend from Alpena, MI remembers HS graduation getting cancelled in June for snow
speaking of the nice powder snow, i need to go shovel my walk before it gets icy and crusty. bbl

Ring Dings are wonderful!
I see that tom had whiskey for breakfast. smells like jack, and unusually for him, straight
Patties of choc cake covered in more choc. with vanilla filling! WOW
he was way stressed from driving in the snow. Those years in TN made him weak ;)
I'd have rather had the Moon Pies. whiskey for breakfast. Ugh!
well, he was coming off a 12h shift at the hospital
and i know others must've come in, because he was home at a usual hour for getting of between 7 and 8
Then it's not really breakfast, but a nitecap, right?

Love it!
back again from another shift shoveling out the driveway. thanks goodness we also have a snow blower.
Poor Peri
good that you're taking breaks, peri
this is the second most snow this area has received according to the news
I wish I still lived in an apt!
then maintenance clears the driveways. but I always had to dig my car out
:-)
maybe I will move to Fla or someplace warm
condo w/ garage is perfect compromise. no digging out car, no clearing driveway.
we have a shared driveway and our neighbor is a lovely woman who did a lot of shoveling too
yes, that is great, hursh
ok, I want a condo with a garage
I live in a complex of houses where they do all that for you. It's geat.
and someone to help with the financial aspect, any takers?
i know we set a record for Dec snow.
where are you in NJ, hego?
Well, back to the kitchen for me. I'll never finish this today, anyway.
where are you in NJ, hego?
I live near Long Branch. On the Shore.
hopefully we will get little or no snow for the rest of the winter

hi, judi
the catholic archdiocese of washington says that people need not attend mass today. mighty white of them.
Ha. Repent for your sins at home (while shoveling your driveways and sidewalks).
i'm going to go find some food. bbs
At the risk of being shooshed up: Not much snow in the San Francisco Bay area either...
*glares at Erda over our 17+ inches of snow*
Wow Judi, that's TOO MUCH!!
Tell me about it.
Hey Judi, I'm traveling back to Newark, DE later today. How are the roads? (My main concern is Churchman's Road off of 95)
Hi, Brookie. I'm sure 95 is good. Not sure about the side roads. I'm sure Churchman's is good around 7/1/95 & 52 interchange by Borders, etc. Not sure about further up towards 273. Then again, the County Police have a garage on that road. I'd say no worries.
Now THAT's detailed information! A good man, Judi!!
Thanks, Judi. I live within walking distance of Borders, so I won't stress about it. :-)
Probably no sidewalks plowed/shoveled, so be careful if you are walking in the road.
someone shovelled the dirt path that connects our building to the park and trail behind :)
back to tending the corn and onions, bbs
Uploading my photos on Facebook. I am still learning to edit in Photoshop....
Judi, do you live closer to U of D or closer to Christiana?
Closest to UD, Brookie. We live off of Polly Drummond Hill Rd.
Ugh, I can't imagine how the roads are there.
coolio, red
Actually, our neighborhood is good. We have pay association dues so we're lucky enough to get plowed out. DelDot has lots more work to do though!

that's what i'm doing here.. babble usually does relax me
hi 167 to go
college boy came home for winter break and so far I have done 5 loads of laundry do not think he had a clean article of clothing What a smell
lol poor speed
hi, jane
not meaning to be pushy speedfreak, but wouldn't it be easier to teach him how to do it himself??
Ewwww. Poor speed.
Hee hee. *pictures the Grinch saying "stink, stank, stunk"*
I have tried but the boy seems allergic to the washing machine he learned quite well from his father LOL
i had no problem with my kids coming home with ons of laundry, and i even helped out with a load here and there, but I made it clear that it was their responsibility. they might have resented it a bit, but in the end it served them well. and made my life a bit less hectic.
(that was Tons of laundry)
how was Tom's shift last night, seain?
Phantom: quadratic.
actually he and his brother also do a lot around the house so I don't have a problem doing laundry he also has been out shoveling 15" of snow all day plus they do all the food shopping and some cooking when home so saves me
ah well.. life is a series of trade-offs.... so long as you don't feel too put-upon, c'est la vie
Oh, that's great, speed. Although, I hope it's not just because Santa is watching them.
hello all
TO!
owl, where've you been hiding?
hi to
hi TO!
hi, TO :)
Poor TO was probably buried underneath the snow like the rest of us east coasters.
Time for a snack. BBL.
owl? you there?
does anyone know how the roads between chattanooga and DC would be?
ok well, then.. time for me to go bake my lemon bars
don't know jane, but my guess is that any roads to dc are not their best today
harpjane-it is clear in Knoxville, TN
does anyone have a clue list in their profile? The Babanon one printed out badly
So western TN is sort of ok?
Knox is in East TN
yes inge,, une has one.... and i am grateful beyond belief
There are 2 in babanon - use BJ"@
harp western tenn is cold - but no snow or rain - just cold
ta 7 48? the one after the sourish word?
well my nephew from Montana won't think it's cold but he has to drive home to DC today
jane - ta7 sticky black stuff and unwanted greeney
More shabby ..
thanks seain
ty dc.. now i'm off
ty dc
That's the one ..
thanks dc for ta7
yall very welome. for me, it's always fun when points lead me to the word :)
i forget, is there a word list when lickety's isn't updated?
in BabAnon
but yuse BJ's!
coolie ty
Hello again. Seain, how are you + Tom surviving?
he got to and from work, and had some jack before bed
i'm going to my sister's tonight, as i'm watching my nephews tomorrow
How is the area? Roads, etc
Fun. How old are they, Seain?
how were things at work for him?
Main roads decent. neighborhood hit or miss
we're plowed here, but my sister's hood isn't
ti6 after wee?
i dunno, jane. i saw him off, was asleep when he got home, and he's asleep now :) i'll find out later
i fit of anger, or angry speech, jane
hissy fit jane - like I did earlier
I have ti7 = more fatiggued
thanks
*fatigued
Hootowl, you had a hissy fit?
lunch was very satisfying :)
What did you have, Seain? I must decide on lunch. I just came back from a 1 hr hike into the park.
yup!
What happened, Hootowl?
I have a question for everyone. I discovered something on my hike and don't know whether to call the police.
i sauteed some onions and corn in some sesame oil, added some fried garlic and a pinch of vanilla sugar. when onions soft, added 2.5 C water, brought to boil till onion soft. added a thing of ramen noodles, some soy sauce and a cube of vegan beef bullion
Go back & read it. Trying to forget it.
garnished with some green onions greens
Yummy, Seain!
can you share what you saw?
Innards of a large creature, with bloody towel next to that. I saw lungs, heart, liver, stomach, intestines....nothing else, lying on top of snow near woods. Probably a deer but human?
i'd report to police or game warden, yes
gross. but no harm done if you call cops. They can decide how important it is
No fur. So maybe a hunter gutted the deer and tossed innards?
gross. but no harm done if you call cops. They can decide how important it is
probably from a deer, but good to be sure
probably so, scrabbs, but i'd still report it
OK, TY for your input. After I walked away I wondered about the origin of the parts.
either way it shouldn't be there scrabb, at least in Montana they can't leave that stuff behind
hoot was it just the political talk or the bashing of obama
draws too many predators
OK, I will look up State Police #. BRB. TY for alleviating my anxiety + indecision.
and if you can walk there it is probably not legal to hunt
Speed - bashing bothers me no end. especially when there is no facts to put forward. Just personal rancor. That's not a discussion
hi there speed. enjoying the snow?
aknitter if I never saw snow again I would not miss it
I am off to visit my new puppy.. will report later.
i was thinking of boxing it all up and dropping it on your door step. can't get out though
thanks aknitter got enough of my own
i want a can of snow-b-gone like on the frosty the snowman cartoon.
need to take a break from this 30 left and my eyes are crossing
the first qu6?
add a vowel to previous word jane
oops, sorry, not the first
add another vowel before cons. in qua5/16
that's the first qu5/16
hello everyone -- 77 to go :)
hi nan
I see that lickety is not here today -- does anyone know if they are ok? -- hope it's just a Christmas vacation
i'm thinking vacation with the timing
is there an hy?
OK, I called the county sheriff's dept re the bloody pile of guts
yes hy4
The dispatcher said that my call was not unusual
just found it -- ty
good, scrabbs, and most interesting
that would disturb me no end scrabs
Not surprisingly, I love anatomy, so I studied it for a while
not the body - the dispatcher. Not unusual????
ni 4, 5, 5, 6, 7 -- what am I missing from the top n?
gotta go - 41 left and too many things to do. Like the tree........
be well, hoot
bye hoot
interweb is very slow here today.
I see, hootowl..yes, disturbing
ni 4 5 7 5 6 7
ty babrab -- are you finished and have you posted a list in your profile?
no .. but there are two at babanon
clue for the first ni 7? -- or the call?
thanks folsey, and keep us posted if you hear anything scrabb
extend the 5 with vowels
nm found it, although I find it hard to believe that it's a areal word
hi again.
*sigh* --- 4 more h's from the left to find
Hello, Dorens
"bigger sigh" i have 7 more from there. babrab, long time.. how've you been?
Been doing some intensive ambiguity and have concluded I excel at being deliberately obtuse
((((((((((BR)))))))))) hello! I have missed seeing you!
hey all!
hi, stid
sounds like scrabs had something bad happen? should I review the chog?
Afternoon all...
Hello, redT
Hi BR, how have you been keeping?
hey red
BR, intriguing poem you came up with for today.
some ass just drove by with 10 inches of snow on the roof of their cr-v
hi, BR, red, stid
Hi Stid. Are you ready for the Holiday? DO you Celebrate X mas?
Hi DC again.
Hello, dc
Back from researching whitetail deer anatomy
hi Scrabbs.
Red, I just commented on your photos--is that a spoonbill?
Hey. I guess I have to print out the stats and pencil in what I have? Or is there another way to do it?
Snow sucks. Actually, winter sucks
i past into a spreadsheet and enter Xs
paste even ;)
Yes Scrabbs it is!!!! I spent several hours yesterday at the Wildlife Preserve, and I am very full of myself.
teart
oopsie. not valid, at least :)
we don't celebrate christmas, red -- thanks for asking. So yes, we are ready for it! LOL
A spreadsheet that you already have set up?
I feel like a teart sometime.
actually we celebrate a different holiday and the children just got their single present for the year: Beatles Rockband for the wii.
i have a spreasheet for that pupruse in me google docs
We celebrate Jewish Christmas- it has two time honored rituals...
how cool, stid!
Beatles Rockband is an awesome gift.
what do you celebrate - festivus?
Happy Festivus!
I did not realize rocks were so talented
HowDy, hurshy ... thanks for the list
Happy everything
whooo hooo Festivus, and I thin kso Babble. hi Hurshy
oh, don't thank me today, BJ had already done it!
the winter solstice -- call it what you like. It's a big day for our family. :-D
easy to be happy when my two kids are in the same room getting along... LOL this was a good gift decision.
isn't it not til tomorrow?
at some point I get my chance to try an instrument
i grew up with channuakah, solstice, and xmas. Yay for combined families. :)
I want my dinner now.
it is not until tomorrow, but of course Tom doesn't have tomorrow off. So we gave the gift today.
ah.
Stid, when I hiked to the park a short time ago I came upon the innards of an animal, probably a deer, but no fur, and there was a bloody towel next to the pile.
We are a Xmas family. with St Lucia day and some odd little fam traditions thrown in...
wow-- ;left for a few minutes and missed a lot in the chog. am buying beatles rockband for David and Jaime and not sure what to order.. there seem to be three choices
*curious about Kaplan's two time honored traditions*
oh scrabs, how strange
and red, i'm going to sanible next week and expect to see see lots of roseate spoonbills
Scrabb for sure it is a deer, as hunters tend to leave the stuff they dont want to carry. My dog used to get sick off the stuff when I was a kid.
It was fascinating for this anatomy lover
we already had a wii, dorens, so we got that variety. Which one you want depends on what gaming system(s) they already own.
the fur, and carcass went with the hunter.
That's what I assume too, red.
that would be my assumption, too.
they have the xbox.. but even then there seem to be choices. valuepack, complete, etc.
scrabs I hope that is the answer.. and it is the most logical one
The he5 looked like a human he5
babrab, it is nice to have you back, obtuse, abstruse, or whatever
I bought myself a Shop-Vac for Xmas and used it for the first time yesterday--wonderful experience. This girl is easily amused.
I was missing you, BR
Thanks, Dorens
and crabbler
LOL scrabs! I was saying on FRiday that my dream gift this season would have been a new blender or crockpot.
i used shopvac, regular vac, and hand vac today, trying to catproof my house for son who will be here soon. nearly broke my back too. and he'll still end up wheezing
Scrabbler, that is
Hope we will warm up at Sanibel for you Dorens... and you shoudl see tons of spoonbills.
last ci 7?
red, you are near sanibel?
If the word for getting rid of certain rodents os OK, why not the one who gets rid of those rats? Just wondering.
I was so thrilled with my vac and attachments--and laughing that I am so low maintenance for future husband
I dont know, I dont think so, let me look.
ci 7 -- most of a town and sea bird
TY, BR
ah, fixed interweb. paused the bittorent. Egads, those chew bandwidth
I am like that with come felids too doren -- not a thing that can be done except take massive doses of antihistamine and pray.
ty scrabs
Ok, No no, I am not near Sanibel. It looks to be maybe 5 hours south. Maybe.
he thinks i should get a hepa filter attached to my furnace... mucho dinero and not sure if it would be worthwhile.. but one more day like this and I will think about it
He should where a mask and gloves, Doren
a good hepa filter can help, for sure. I would love ANYTHING that cut down on the dust from our furnace. *swears again to NEVER get central, forced-air hear*
Put the HEPA filter on him
heehee scrabbs
well. they just made it through another song... it only took them 80 millions tries
hi all! .. back to find some more
okay, my turn on the mike. back soon.
i can't remember ever spending so much time on cleaning, and then shoveling the walk as well.. oh go break a leg stid!
I have 85 left without stats- Ugh it is hard this way.
I was a cleaning maniac yesterday
It sure is tough, Kaplan
I cleaned yesterday and today spouse is blaming me for every missing important piece of paper...that's the way it always it
Dorens, for my SIL, I covered the furniture, and it really helped! As much as I would vacuum, I could never get the all the allergens (he is allergic to dogs and cats)
i track all the stuff that matters, and produce 'missing' items on demand. easier that way.
hm, that is an interesting idea aloy. sheets over everything?
so, old chenille bedspreads saved the day and didn't look so bad either
that way there's order, and over time the spouse learns where to look for many things.
you could certainly use sheets
sheets over everything...that's a cultural thing...
139 left here, but I'm just picking little by litte, crud to do today after my social nuts day yesterday.
Plastic slipcovers!!!
micrfibre blankets - hair washes right off in the laundry, and they vacuum well.
still.all the fur that finds itself along the edges of the rooms... even the kitchen..stuff everywheere it seemed. But sheets over the chairs and sofas would help. I draw the line at plastic though, kaplan!
a lot softer than the plastic too
Did anyone grow up in a house with plastic slipcovers?
omg no kaplan creepy
NO! can't stand 'em
my great-grandmother used plastic slipcovers.
64 words left and no list
horrible things
heck no. I dont think I ever even saw them except on television.
okay, Tom's turn again.
I swear my mother had them for about 2 years in the sixties- she otherwise had good taste, but her big lapses were the plastic slip covers and --contact paper!
a friend's mother had plastic on all the furniture on all the floors... and sanitized everything daily.
hiya stid.. we love the winter solstice too (-:
creepy
The children were banished to the garage unless they were asleep or for special occasions (it was carpeted and all, just not the house)
egads, that is too too obsessive
i remember my mother painstakingly removing the contact paper from the cabinets when we moved into the new house.
In the summer, you would kind of make an adhesive sounding noise when you got off the couch
i think querty should be accepted~
(((Aloyisius))) hi there! long time no see
lol
I know, ((stid))... too long
yes, I remember that sound! *scrunchy plastic crinkle*
Yeah, but it's really qwerty
There's a list up on BabAnon
hey helensgirl!
Were any of your ancestors German Jews?
Hi Aloy
And putting in my bit on plastic slipcovers - they outgas things like formaldehyde, just like other plastics, only more because they are constantly being stressed by bending and stretching.
Not to stereotype people but my mother always said it was a German Jewish thing to cover the floors and furniture with sheets
Hi HG
my great-grandma with them was married to a german jew
Hmmm.
The covering furniture with sheets (and mirrors) is after a death, while sitting shiva.
back on vocals...
No- I meant covering them so people wouldn't get them dirty- at shiva it's only the mirrors, not all the furniture...
de 7 following expiration?
speaking of shiva...
whew!!
Fireworks
A lot of jews in Iowa (mostly German) always covered the furniture, too, as a reminder not to sit on chairs, sofas, etc. - not the tables, of course, so I overstated it.
congrats, flosey
Wow flosey!
must run, hubby just made lunch, be back tonight
yippee, yay for flosey, congrats!!!!
Flosey, are those your pets being so adorable on your icon?
Like I said, it's a cultural thing. I once had a boyfriend whose mother was an immigrant from Vienna, and the floors in her house were covered with sheets!
bye flosey!
no helen, just a picture I found but our dog did look like this
Yippee Flosey!
congrats flosey
de 7 following expiration?
Taking off for the afternoon (finally) must get some exercise before we're snowed in again.
I have a good friend whos ancestry is german Jewish, and she has sheets on the seats in her car!!
I think so cybernan
I'm looking for a clue Kaplan
de4 before it + consumed
I cant find that one, cy.
ty flosey
i think i'm not going to finish this one so i can get on the road before they refreeze
yw nan, and now I'm off before lunch gets cold
Be careful, Seain.
thanks. happy babbling, yall! :D {poof}
Is Lickety ever coming back or do I have to adjust to this inconvenient new reality?
I try to not use Lickety so each day is the same for me! But I rarely finish these days, I just seemed to stop caring.
He will be back--sometimes he is out of town. I wish on these occasions he would assign the program to someone else
What do you do- just play till you cant see anymore?
Good for you, Red. Life is easier now, isn't it?
Well, Life is a little bit messy right now, which is probably why I am not concentrating on the grid too much! to be honest.
Lickety should really consider the starving masses
Life is messy- makes me concentrate more- to block things out
Pretty Much Kaplan. I can finish without the clues. I actually dont find the clues that helpful, probably because I think differently.
You must be very very smart!
No, if I start out with the clues, I get really confused. If I can get it down to 30 left then the clue list helps, otherwise its a mess.
ed 8?
I finish without the clue list by gleaning clues from Chat!!!!! Not smart!
e +de8, nan
Hello all. ed8 e & d7.32
I still cannot figure out that de7 clue
I do that too- I try to do them on my own, then I go to Lickety to see if I missed any 4 letter words, and I monkey them, then I look for 5's and glean the rest from chat
a booboo in the car frame + ingested food, Scrabs
I think it has to do with teeth the ed word.
Or demand the clues from chat by having a meltdown
de7/32 ding in car fender and consumed
I don't do that. I get very annoyed when people come into chat and ask for clue after clue after clue. I just dont care if I finish or not. Its not getting me a work promotion or anythign...
ty -- had it, but wasn't accepted on the first 2 tries
TY--I was confused--thought it came before expiration word
hello all, tired from shoveling, my car was snowed in tho. just looked out the window and my dear nephew is shoveling my car out!!! what a dear
Sorry if I annoyed...usually it's just my last few
hello all, tired from shoveling, my car was snowed in tho. just looked out the window and my dear nephew is shoveling my car out!!! what a dear
hello all, tired from shoveling, my car was snowed in tho. just looked out the window and my dear nephew is shoveling my car out!!! what a dear
No Kaplan, you have never done that!!!!!!
Yay for him, Peri!
LOOKS LIKE I M GONNA GIVE ON THIS ONE
As far as I know!
hello all
hello all
checked the list on ba and don t have the patience to folow it
Kaplan, you never lose your patience. Even toward the end you remain calm.
hi peri
Sam, I will not finish this one
I suppose I was ver irritating to some of you when I first started and need clues a lot....
very...
i am irritated that i depend on lickety so
his list is the easiest to use
Actually I can only think of two people who cause me to avoid the chat. and they are not present.
Are you kidding me? I nearly had a coronary the other night! Seriously, it seems to be what people do.
he has spoiled me
hello all. Hope every1 is having a great babbling time.
well have worked this one without any list and have 52 left. not too bad I have come a long way
I must admit though I use a lot of clues others ask for!!!
hi all, and remember to b r e a t h e ! 8-)
Good evening everyone.
still need 64
I use whatever clues I can get LOL!
Well need to continue with the mess here in the house....nevereneding
me too science
ending
he elder
Science I love your icon!
one day I will type better
Hello new entrants!
ty red
I have 84 left with no list, but I'm afraid that the rest will be all those dyslexic obscure words...I am proud of some of the long ones I got on my own tho
still think querty should be a word! I have two missing qu's....
I have 124, Kaplan is doing awesome.
Everytime I get the house clean, husband spends the next 48 hours ransacking it blaming me for all of his missing scraps of Important Paper that he was keeping in a Special Place
I need 111 and am just staring at the grid
139 to go here
this grid is giving me a headache and eye issues!
20 "re" words, phew
92 to go here but I was out shoveling twice and then took a 2 hour nap
But staring at grid and chatting is still relaxing and help me to delay cleaning chores
Think of a lot of the words being something more-so
I hate snow.
lol scrabs that is why i am on day 3 of cleaning the studio!
me too Kap

TY for that qu7

hey again hurshy
still sick but hoping for quick recovery
luckily i can nap whenever i feel so inclined! between that, fluids, and zinc, i'm doing all i can
*offers lovely rice and veggie soup for hurshy*
and i found a pair of pseudoephedrine in my drawer from before they went behind the counter, that was a nice score.
thank you for soup, stiddy, just what i need.
I hope you feel better quickly hurshy. Will you be doing anything special for Christmas?
if by special you mean anything out of the christmas-ordinary, then no, but if you mean out of the ordinary-ordinary, then, yes, visiting both my family and husband's.
:-D I guess I meant both -- I know traditional celebrations are important; but some families "mix it up" occasionally and throw a really big bash
Good evening to my fellow babblers! How is everyone?
By the way, congratulations to all the finishers! YAY!
well, it's also my grandparents' 60th anniversary on boxing day, so that's an extra bit of special
hello Min! welcome to the grid!
Min is that you kissing Santa?
i have 103 left and only 14 of them are 4 letter words. i think this is going to take awhile
That's really wonderful, hurshy! what a milestone!
go everyone go!!!
I am down to 93 listless so far, not going to list today I think, just play until I stop making progress and then look at my new cookbook.
oh joshua.... you'll need this... *hands large bag of choclit*
Hi everyone and happy babble snow day - I'm using the list in Une's profile - is there something missing, I have all the a's listed, but i'm still missing one!
sam here, stid. i do not have this list and am stuck at 57 left
No,that isn't me.I do not know who that is in my icon
hey JBV!
same
hi stid!
I think the list is also posted on babanon you could check to compare
Min is camera-shy apparently. Not sure if it's the purple antennae or the green skin or the orange eyes... *wicked mama look*
I, of course, wear the regulation invisibility cloak when in public so people don't see the extra eyes or ears...
I have a list in my profile for everyone who needs list
Hello JBV! How are you doing? Welcome to the puzzle
hi min, how are you?
I am well. Disappointed in the amount of snow we got
poor min, i bet there are plenty of babblers who would donate more for you!
where are you Min? we got about 8 inches here in NJ
Believe today's grid seems to be the same version of yesterday's grid w/the letters just mixed up. There seems to be a lot of the same words in the grid today
I am in New York and we only got a few inches.Didn't even need to use the snowblower to do the driveway
2 phantom words for me today are retired & theater
Clue please for the final re 6.
Hello Mudd! How are you doing?Welcome to the puzzle
minveryork - switch the last two letters on one of your phantoms
try the british version of the second word, min
re6 - a politically incorrect term for a mentally disabled person
ty
Thanks, joshuavorbis! Guess I should goto the PB for almost spilling a word. Never going to finish the grid!
And thanks for the hello. I've been buried in the grid.
Hi Brookie! How are you doing? Welcome to the grid!
how are you doing mudd? seems I haven't seen you for a while.
hey brookie
I just started babble yesterday

Goodbye stidmama! I will see you tomorrow in the log
sorry i missed saying hi to stid before poofing!
hi Mudd
*pops back in* hm. must have you confused with someone else with a similar name, Mudd! LOL welcome to the madness! *repoof*
two 8's elude me... the ci8 and the 1st en8... any clues please?
en 8 is the noun made from the en 6 before it
the whole enchilada
and the ci 8 is the first part of New York C**y, plus sea bird
thanks jbv!
sure, we can't do this without help today - I'm struggling to find my last 45 -
i can not get to babbler's anon to get the word lists. does anyone have the list in his or her profile? thanks

i picked up that ci 8 from someone else's clue earlier
Yes, Uneaixoise has it in her profile, joey

te 4 = rhymes with burn
isn't that a ci7?
help with ea6/27 pls

yes, alycia, you're right the ci 8 is a past tense of a chemical term ci 7/32
sorry about that
sorry, peri, that's the only ea i don't have!
ea 6 - the planet plus the high point tile at the end, peri
goes up to the right
i mean to the left
you see what a day of babbling and snow does to the brain?
thanks, jbv!
thanks JBV did not see the Y in upper left
me, too, peri, missed a few up there, til I opened the list and that is helping a LOT!

i have 30 left and might be able to help with some clues... hopefully...
i have 101 to go...... you can do it peri!

science - sounds like ta*red & feathered with a sometimes vowel at the end.
lol been looking at this too long today while looking at small pieces of jewelry all over my studio!
christmas red for your toenails jacula?
Hi all. Back afte a busy and slightly boozy evening with Other Half, sorting out house decorations, tidying up et, whilst listening to music. 2 words to find.
cybernan - they're not MY toenails. They were my pic for the 'ugly Christmas decorations' theme from a day or so back.
sciencegeek, where in Texas are you?
hello all, 33 left, plodding along, driveway all shoveled out with the help of 3 other people. we have a wonderful neighbor
I finally iced and decorated the 4 Xmas cakes today, too.
we've had nothing but fog and a drizzly rain all day -- but at least we don't have to shovel it!
clue for the last te 5 pls
I am in Houston Joey! Where are you?
Shovelling fog sounds like some kind of punishment from Hell, cyber. LOL
lol -- don't bother icing mine -- have just been applying a liberal brushing with apricot brandy every week for the last 6 weeks.
NM I see you are 6 hours away from me
fort worth. i perked up when you said jewelry, i love to see handmade, i will look at your website
science - te + the first 3 letters of the second sort of weather cyber just mentioned.
The te 5/10 is anagrame of ir 5/10 word sciencegeek
sneaky word always miss it! ty
I love apricot brancy
cyber - if I didn't do the marzipan, icing and decorating thing, all the cake recipients would be very disappointed!
it's 4:50 here, so I guess it's time to go and put some supper together.
I love marzipan too. have a recipe somehwhere for a Frangipani cake made with almond paste. it is delish
If you have any marzipan left over, try stuffing mejool dates with it -- delicious
on my way -- back at the flip :)
Leftover marzipan? Fat chance of that in this house with daughter, Other Half and his daughter all waiting for any trimmings. LOL
Okay - back to Babble business - diving into grid for an ni 7 snf a ta6 to finish.
Sorry about the boozy typing. LOL
Found the open when the sun's down place.
My studio is still a mess. The house was neat for half a day- then husband trashed it looking for his important papers he is sure I threw away- only I didnt, of course.

Kaplan - if he made the mess then he should clear it up!

Hi Brookie. Ri6 is like the backward re6 but with different 1st vowel.
also ri + late
Piles of mail! Piles of papers! Piles of crap! (Im venting)
thanks for the clues, got it!
Kaplan - I do think! Maybe you should punctuate your side of the argument with a frying pan? You know what to do with it!
I have given up and often resort to passive aggression.
i'm all about passive aggression, kaplan. good for you.
lol
I guess setting fire to his study is not an option? LOL
passive aggression is much more satisfying
i always feel better about myself that way
No, but throwing away his shoes works.
still missing a ta 6/28. Did thet clued 10 minutes ago and i Missed it? Please reclue. It is my last word.
Having said that, I'm the one responsible for the long term piles of stuff in our house, but I, and both of us together, have been steaming through it all lately. The house looks almost presentable again but the study will need the door keeping closed when Christmas guests arrive.:(
ta6,28 - more ragged
ta628- something that is more ragged
Brookie beat me, but great minds think alike
ta6/18 (before the more frayed ta7 word) - just leave the last letter off.

hello friends.
hi again, stiddy
Stid!
hi stid
I didn't know who she was either LBD -- watch so few movies that anyone more recent than Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn rather confuses me!
B Murhpy was in Girl, Interrupted.
How many equ words are there?
still, it's sad when someone so young dies unexpectedly
so she was an actress? not a fluff and puff or something
just finishing up and am stuck on the first ni 7.
Also in Clueless and 8 mile. Also a regular voice on King of the Hill

And what was the name of that movie she did with Ashton Kutcher..they were newlyweds on their honeymoon?
Hi. And everyone always forgets Brittanys marvellous role in Girl Interrupted.
hey lady!
Hi Herin!
hi Herin!
I also thought she was good in Don't Say a Word with Michael Douglas.
Hi. Sorry had to put my 2cents in. I loved her work. It was really sad. I am also going to hell for saying damn wrong Britany
THX IBD...couldn't get that at all.
is a best-selling[1] 1993 memoir by American author Susanna Kaysen. In the book, Kaysen relates her experiences as a patient in a psychiatric hospital in the 1960s after being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. The memoir's title is a reference to the Vermeer painting Girl Interrupted at her Music.[2] While writing the novel Far Afield, Kaysen began to recall her almost two years at McLean Hospital.[3] Once done with the book, she obtained her file from the hospital with the help of a lawyer and began to write Girl, Interrupted.[4] In 1999, the memoir was adapted into a film of the same name starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. It was directed by James Mangold. Can you believe that they allowed that video to be shown in the clinic for girls interrupted where my daughter was? I'd already watched the film privately and cried buckets over it, given the circumstances.
Hi Herin! Haven't crossed paths with you for ages! How are you?
Jac It was a brilliant movie. I have yet to find the damn book :(. I am good. I am also procrastinating
I've got the book, Herin, but I'm hanging on to it.
Oh! I am done! Can't even see straight anymore! Good night my friends!
night night Car
YAY car! sweet dreams!
good nite Car
'Night car says Jac after a busy day and a boozy night.
opoo. You just reminded me I was meant to pick up a book on Olive Schreiner
Night Carie
hi
Havin said, I've got the book, I'm not actually sure I still have now. I purged my shelves of many anorexia related books after my daughter, who now eats again (but isn't 100% well) got cross about seeing them there.
hello, baby4
I don't need books on my shelves to remindd me of the horror we went through.
wasup
Hi Becky!!
what horror?
Jac I understand but I don't if that makes sense
Baby, if you knew me, you'd know. It's an anorexia tale that began when my daughter was about to drop dead.
Herin - erm... not sure there.
okay, the kids and Tom and I are going to watch stidkid #1's bday movie -- the most recent star trek movie!
I read in the paper that Vic beckam was only going to eat 4 bites of the meals on Christmas day and that she restricts to 900 cals a day. Needless to say a lot of people wrote in and said why publish this
(((hugs ))) *extra hugs and choclit for jac* see you-all tomorrow *poof*
Is it Stid Kids birthday?
was last wednesday.
*real poof*
Ok well happy late birthday
'Night Stid. xxx
Jac. What i mean is I understand why you cleaned out the book selves and I can feel what you went through but I will never understand it as it didn't happen to me
Oh well, all that I saw and experienced in the 3 years my daughter was in the clinic has certainly left me well able to deal with my screwed-up stepdaughter. (God or Gods move in mystreious ways, wot?)
May be the powers that be decided that you were a great person to handle what could be thrown at you next
back soon have to hang out laundry
Herin - yes, I see what you are saying. I can understand, since I teetered on the very brink of it myself in my early 20s, and understand the 'high' of 'feeling empty' and the 'victory' you feel. However, food won over what it said on the scales, even if the sales did keep showing a pummeting weight for a few weeks after I upped my food intake.
Jac. I will be back in 10min someone has to hang this laundry out and the cats don't have thumbs.
Hanging out laundry... that reminds me - my mad as a box of frogs neighbour had all her pyjamas hanging out on the rotarty airer in the garden in the snow yesterday.
well at least in the cold they would get starched for free
