I remembered the greeting! I visited Kenya in 2006 and Tanzania in 2008 and really enjoyed both trips.
Suggestions for Tanzania? My host returned to the US on an emergency and I am left on my own
Goodness! Tanzanian roads are better than Kenyan, so it may be more comfortable to do more road travelling. We stayed for a period in Moshi, near Kilimanjaro, and did safari to NgoroNgoro.
I'd probably try to get onto some kind of organised trip but that's just me being cowardly. We travelled over to Zanzibar, but the boat trip over to Dar is not for the fainthearted.
My friend told me to fly to Zanzibar
Yes, we flew across from Moshi and got the boat to Dar.
The other thing - are you flying back from Dar to the States?
maybe i will look at going to kilimanjaro seems a shame to come so far and not go see it
Do be aware that Kilimanjaro is pretty well covered in cloud - we managed a five minute look out of days there!

It is a different 'world' so being 'scared' no surprise. I have not been and I am sure it has changed but I had a girlfriend who travelled around with her young boyfriend doing it rough some years ago...some of the areas they were in sounded more than a bit scary. She was no shrinking violet but she said she would not go back
I can understand if she was roughing it! We were probably spoilt in Kenya, using a package that had us in lovely hotels and very good camping facilities. Our time in Tanzania was less luxurious and you did see more of the poverty and the way people live but never felt threatened. I'd encourage her to go back but with more security built in.
Certainly, for us,the focus of the first trip was for safari, for husband to see the animals after years of drooling at the thought. I was less keen at the thought, but ended up being entranced.
Did he get any 'hands-on' experience? wouldn't it be wonderful if he could do a job swap or something for a few months
No hands on experience! The second time - in Tanzania, he did spot a vet's surgery in the town and wandered in to say hello and to see what drugs they carried.
He would only be able to survive in the African winter. Land him there during the summer and there'd just be a puddle of sweat.

Hello, FM - wedding was lovely, weather stayed dry (mostly) and the meal etc was really enjoyable.

Seb is a precocious 4 1/2 year old who I am hoping to get into preschool this fall, provided I can come up with the money
Mom is doing well and looking forward to both kids being in school so she can go back to work. Then we can work on putting money together to stop renting an apartment and get a place of our own
precocious is great. Will keep my fingers crossed for financial smoothness
she will love being at work again, I think. Being home with kids is an isolated life for a smart lady.

I didn't see the martini recipe, but I would guess you would strain the watermelon juice well to make the consistency right, then probably add vodka, perhaps a bit of fresh lemon or lime, and maybe a splash of simple syrup or Roses's lime juice. Just a guess though.

Watermelon martinis:
/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 4 cups cubed seedless watermelon 2 tablespoons lemon juice Ice 1 bottle sparkling water 4 ounces citrus vodka, optional Directions In a small saucepan combine the sugar with 1/2 cup water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then remove from the heat and let cool. In a blender add the watermelon, 2 tablespoons of the sugar syrup and the lemon juice and puree until smooth. Strain through fine mesh sieve into a bowl and discard the pulp. Fill a pitcher with ice, add the watermelon mixture and stir until chilled. Pour into chilled martini glasses and top with seltzer. Add vodka, if desired.

I think I's skip the sparkling water in favor of more watermelon juice. It's pretty watery itself. If you use the sparkiling water, it's more of a collins than a martini.

I saw an interesting item on the 'shaken not stirred' debate that explained that it really does make a differnce if the vodka is potato based rather than grain based. Potato based vodka has a slight oiliness, and shaking creates an emulsion that makes the drink taste smoother. No impact on grain vodka though.
