he was taking his usuaul 50 minute walk in our village, up the jhill and back down when he encountered a man with a beauceron (a cross between a doberman and a shepherd) and when it lunged at Burt, the man dropped the leash. It took Burt down and bit him twice, very seriously

It ate the chunk (large) of flesh it bit off and then attacked again and punctured his shoulder. The surgeon could not close it without a graft which my husband refused

a dog says a lot about its owners
they were saying the breeders asked lots of questions to prospective buyers which in my view is a red flag anyway

i have a cousin-in-law who can take abused dogs and turn them into the most amazing sweet animals
in the end, breeders are about making sales and making money, although some can be responsible
(and I don't even like dogs)

Then sadly the dog needs to be put down. A dog like that is as dangerous as a loaded gun. My friend has trained guard dogs and they will bail you up but not bite. One of the vets hurt her dog trying to see what was wrong with her and the vet got a faceful of teeth and then teh dog went CRAP not meant to do that
the police searched for him this morning, after we gave them a more precise location of where the attack occured. They knocked on all the doors with the photo of the breed I had given them and I think the man admitted it.... I'll see when the gendarmes arrive, possibly with the man!

He did nothing to provoke the dog and the owner dropped the leash when the dog lunged at and brought down my husband and bit him twice

Sorry NancyBoy, but I'm with the others on this one. The dog's owner is clearly not fit to own such a dog. A small child may not have survived an attack.
this is not an area with sophisticated services like re-training a "bad" dog.

our first chow chow, Rosie, died in a closed car in Miami when the company driver had picked her up from the groomer and went into the market, so I know about that! Bravo for NB, but this is a very different situation
well, that's why I did it. It was the height of summer, the car had no windows open and was parked in full sunshine. I was waiting with that dog for nearly three hours though - it would have died. I hope that owner isn't allowed to have pets anymore.

I think sometimes there is probably a lot to be said for relationships like that. When you don't have to face someone, you can be completely honest, although I worry about being a burden, just like I do with all 'in the flesh' friends.

We hiked up the steep hills in the park 3 times yesterday for our final training session.

I am happy--low 70's or 60's and no rain = ideal.
When we were in the Adirondack Mtns 2 wks ago and hiked Peaked Mtn (6 mi round-trip; 2900 ft high) it rained and we got soaked although we were cool.
it makes a difference, the temp. I ran today at 78 degrees and thought the world had improved greatly.
And it will get cooler as we ascend the mtn.

Nope, I have salt + pepper hair, do not dye or highlight. I am a simple, low maintenance chick. Don't blow dry. No jewelry except necklace with evergreen symbol.
I don't blow dry but my hair has been gray since I was 22. so I dye. In a few years I will probably give that up, and be a stunning silver, but for now....silver is a little too aging.
I started greying in mid 30's, dyed x 1 yr then said, "Heck with this."
It's a little odd, but at age 22...I was not aboutt o go gray and now I like the highlights. Since I only do it 2 times a year, its no biggie. Just did a bit much this morning...
My younger sister would have been totally white/grey in her 20's so she dyes. I am lucky to have the salt + pepper pattern.

I am very ne 4/4 to the finish line so to le 4/5 a hand to those not done yet here is a story of clues.When I first started babbling, I thought the game was so ne 4/4. But I said I would not pay a ce 4/5 to upgrade. I knew I could enjoy the babble cr4/9 for free. Plus I'm wa4/10 of paying for anything online. But then I told myself I work hard for a living, I ea 6/21 the right to become a pro-babbler. So I made a de4/5 in my wallet and paid the 14 dollars&95 ce5/12 to upgrade to pro I cannot de4/7 it,I'm addicted to Babble.Hubby could not believe his ea4/4 when I told him that I upgraded to pro. He we4/8 ballistic and ra 4/4ed about what a waste of money it was. He ra 5/10 a lot though and I ignore it.Sometimes I wa4/8 to kick him in the re4/4 I know hubby doesn't care about the money, he gets made because Babble gets in the way of keeping the house ti4/7 and other things that ne4/5 taking care of. Yes, I did...quite good...
I think that watching a movie is one of the nicest things. I gave up movies and TV shows mostly this past year. I am determined this coming year that I shall watch at least two evenings a week, just to have an enforced break from the mental madness.
Unfortunately, I have to order the rest of the series on disc...The first few were available to watch on my computer...

I saw that there are four seasons of the David Suchet Hercule Poirot mysteries at costco ($25 a season). I am SO tempted to get them.
netflix is so nice. I like that one simple fee and you can access via mailed disk or online.
I have never watched NCIS, it looks intriguing though

hey! we had several squash-type plants volunteer in our garden this year, seeds must have overwintered in the compost. I think we have a couple pumpkin plants as well. if they ever stop dropping off the vines...

oh, I am so happy and excited about the gardening class... even if all I do is follow the lead of the other teachers, I will be gardening! *bounce bounce* all of a sudden ten weeks of four hours in the car doesn't seem so awful.
I want potatoes, this kids want carrots we have to decide on what else. we don't have a big spot
potatoes are generally easy to grow, remember that any soil that has had a nightshade family plant (eggplant, potato, tomato, peppers) should NOT have another nightshade member for about 4 years. crop rotation is important.
carrots actually can do nicely in planter boxes, there are some cute globe types that are easy to grow and fun to eat.
peas grow UP and carrots grow down, so can intercrop. Same with beans and squash.

cukes can be trained up a trellis also.
good to know - we have an old sandbox that we are going to fill with topsoil, etc. and plant in that for next year - I'm researching square foot gardening.
square foot gardening is a wonderful idea for small gardens!
be sure to know which plants want sun, which want shade, and plan accordingly. Many plants like morning sun, afternoon shade.
in your climate, possibly more plants will appreciate shade or "part sun"
the spot gets good, mostly full afternoon sun and is shaded most of the morning
also, check the pH requirements -- a few plants want soil that is MUCH more sour than the norm, most common garden plants can use the same soil though.
the sandbox is huge - it is 8' x 10'
that should be a great location. DO invest in drip irrigation... must better than spraying water because it goes straight to the roots and doesn't evaporate so fast.
oh! kids LOVE marigolds (tagetes spp), calendula are also fun to grow (those are what the english call marigolds)
and aren't marigolds good to keep bugs away?

I think we are going to do the veggies around the edges and flowers in the center since they won't need as much attention
