grem... question for you
k
LOTS of phantoms in this one
is there an easy way to post list in profile without having to manually delete the extra letters?
I have a text editor with a regular expression option in search/replace - it's easy if you have something like that.
well done, grem
a case of find one 8 find them all!
I don't know if word, excel, or publisher has anything like that... hmmmm...
Try EditPad Lite (free)

That's almost as good as my way of doing it!
Hmm, maybe EditPad Lite doesn't have the regex options (I only have Pro).
whew! that was tough for this old head!!! done.
gratz rose!
K, found ARB's notes bro... got the first cell to work, but cannot get the formula copied correctly for the next words... grrr... it's been awhile since I have done absolute formulas in excel... .. looking again...
you click the bottom-right of the cell and drag it down
okay grem... question....
.... checking.....
=left($A1,2)
erm, without $, maybe?
woweeeeee it worked
hang on... want to try it again from scratch...
Yeah, I think a "$" before a row/column label makes that an absolute.
how many words today?
don't have patience
good night all
only 85, BOOM
85, pretty easy.
See, I copy all this stuff down and keep it handy, even though it's Greek to me! Glad it helped!

atonia doesnt work here...
tried that one, Chugga
I have to save those instructions
"naiant" won't work either
night nan! And bye all
never seen naiant before
from Wordsplay
grem, thanks alot...
ty bro for archive info
"naiant - applied to a fish depicted horizontally"
Uncommon alternate of "natant", related to swimming, apparently.
natant is a french derivative how can you have an i replacement?
Oops, PB on that.
wow, sprite, that was quick!
I dunno, that's just what the definition says.
i know i just ask a lot of questions
too quick, jilli :( Now what to do with the rest of this hour ;) Bye!
and "manx" must be a proper noun
jigzone, sprite?
i convinced myseld tsunami is there
tinamous!
tinamou/manitou
axman, taxman, taximan
(anagrams)
:P
yep, I noticed tinamou/manitou were anagrams when looking for M words
you should come play aerolith.. all about anagrams.. you learn so much there
aerolith...loathier?
no go
Who are you, the anagram managar???
(I know I cheated)
you should do british cryptic crosswords, chug. Lots of anagrams. wonderful clues.
haha
I had an anagram puzzle I made - hang on and I'll try to dig it up.
aerolith provides all the anagram association i need
well, there are other challenges, like deciphering the clues...
falling asleep here, off to bed, goodnight all
No, it's a bit more involved.
be back in the morning
oh cool.. im not smart enough to solve clues tho
night flosey -- I'm going soon too.
It's great fun, chug, once you get the hang of it.
well, all I must be *poofing* now...Thanks for all the information! Actually learned something new today :~)
"You find the ____ in a box sliced through the center; you find the ____ by box slices both above and below. I am ____ you that by simply ____ letter order you are ____ all five words in an equivalence."
night dee, and thanks for the list!
It's kind of a riddle too.
you are very welcome jili... glad to help
here's a number series that I almost missed today... find the last number.... 77 49 36 18 ?
8
Pfft, easy.
lol knew you would get it... here's one more...
3, 3, 5, 4 ?
i dont know them!
4
Elementary!
lol... should have known.... well now I am poofing!
*hugs*
Here's a typical Cryptic clue -- Key moves acrobat or glass.
hmm
sleeveless, deadheaded, sereneness, susurruses... what's in common?
4 of the same letter
that's part of it
i dont know yours jilli!
Answer, tumbler.
"banana" is a shorter example
Pensive and lean majesty.
hmm whats the key part?
The key is for a tumbler lock.
ooooohhh interesting.. i like it
Forgot to say they give the number of letters -- so it's Pensive and lean majesty (8).
cognitive?
no umm
how about words with certain substrings? Find up to 9 words with "terb" inside.
Answer, thinking.
what does thinking have to do with lean majesty?
Thin king.
thin king
ruler!
snap, jillibus
Any more of that type, now that we know the rules?
Well, you have a Brit background, Christine, lol!
oooh i get it
oooh i get it
Water these, dear. (10)
eaupeoplehun lol
eau dear...
Answer, sweetheart.
flowerbabe
There's your anagram.
Don't get the water part.
Water these is an anagram of sweetheart.
oooooooohhh
oooooooohhh
Oh.
so cool
So the rules can kind of be anything.
thats pretty fun actually
Change horses, but not midstream (6)
shores
There are various permutations. If you get one of the paperbacks of Daily Telegraph cryptics, there should be a guide to solving in it.
Yes, grem, you got that one!
ill look some up for fun later thanks
An ear-deafening cymbal.
Maybe nowadays you can google how to solve cryptics.
Answer of form: ____ ____ with the words anagrams (length 10)
I did a little bit of composing cryptics some years ago, and made a list of anagrams -- pages and pages of them.
supersonic percussion
Morning all. My fave cryptic clue is gseg. 9 and 4 letters
Scrambled eggs....
haha thats cool soodle
oy vay, soodle!
Sometimes the clue will rev up a little: the word that is to be switched around is part of two words -- the end of one, the start of another ... just to keep you on your toes.
Answer to: "You find the ____ in a box sliced through the center; you find the ____ by box slices both above and below. I am ____ you that by simply ____ letter order you are ____ all five words in an equivalence." ... triangle, integral, alerting, altering, relating
Very good, grem!
hehe, a bit hard, huh?
The Brit clues are more playful, though, eh Soodle?
do seitans tansies sestina tisanes nasties
seitans won't work here (sheitans does)
sheitans is older twl, seitan is newer.. still included
Did you try "scungy" in this grid? It's just slang, I guess.
or anestri retsina retains retinas stainer stearin ratines nastier antsier
pares, etc.
I think pares has the most anagrams...is that right?
no im sure theres much more than that
i see.. spare pares pears reaps rapes parse presa prase apers apres asper
Huh, apparently M-W dictionary lists: "anestri, asterin, eranist, nastier, ratines, resiant, restain, retains, retinas, retsina, sainter, stainer, starnie, stearin"
sowpods
probably
And that's missing antsier.
messed
Well then, I guess pares is defeated.
i think theres even one greater than that
one or two actually
or three... i remember a lot
That same page I found the M-W on says: "Word Ways has for some years been collecting anagrams of 'aeginrst'. William Tunstall-Pedoe indicates that a whopping 157 of these have some justification."
I found one of them today (astringe)
Great, gremlinn. Jillibus, you piqued my interest in the cryptic crosswords, just ordered two books from Amazon.
i know many 7 letterers with 5+ anagrams
Well, the thing about the Brit cryptics is that they use real words.
Have fun, Christine!
Do I get a referral bonus?
My Mother would do the one in The Lady magazine, and we'd "help" her.
Oh, you said only jillibus.
You may have to look up solutions in the back of the books quite often until you get the hand of it -- but even that is fun,
I used to "help" my Dad too, but with Daily Telegraph or Sunday Times ones.
*the hang of it*
I used to play a game where it started out with something like: _ _ _ _ _ _ and you had to guess the letters one at a time, but I never got the hang of it.
Didn't play that one, grem.
Pre 24hour television days, chidren (and some adults) played a lot of pencil/paper word games. We played "what's in a name" writing a name, or long word, at the top of the page, then we'd see how many words we could find.
Ooh, slipped that pun right by you.
oh -- are you talking about Hangman, haha?
Gremlinn, is that like hangman?
hehe
And again !!!
I'm half asleep.
Oh boy.
Don't be a pessimist - you're half awake!
Wotevah.
I was all gung ho about this grid at first. Due to technical difficulties, I had to downgrade and just be ho about it.
lol!
Well, I've had it for tonight. Heading for bed -- goodnight all -- enjoy, and thanks!
think im gonna order some brit cryptics too jilli, thanks and take care
Sleep well - and thanks for reminding/introducing us to Crosstics.
how many words today please
85
thanks
good morning diann
good morning sandra. How are you? Got the chollahs, went before breakfast.
Hello, All :-)
Hi Zoom
Gritty grid again..lol
with anaughty word
yes i do not like that word in grids to be honest.
O well
I did a cryptic cross word today not too shabby either
local paper?
I swear if I put imitation one more time I am going to cry
YEs
One of the clues was Whale in Notre Dame
lol, can`t believe there is a nine.
So tell me what is a Whale in Notre Dame?
no idea Herin, sorry...do tell?
Ok what lives in Notre Dame?
hey :)
HEY
:)
what's the French word for whale?
Hello, Ata..well french people of course Herin :-)
no What LIVES in the Notre Dame?
balin / balene something like that
a hunchback whale - that's a new one on me
Hello all
Close Lynxx what else is a whale with another name for Hunch?
Hi Lynxx
yes Infernal, I know
Hello, Lynxxx & christine
hello, and I think it's a humpback whale.
Yep. It was a word clue of a day
Sorry it was my word clue that made my day
Ata were you been hiding?
just been horribly busy!
We;ve had an interesting day/night, discussing anagrams, acrostics, number-games. Gremlinn set an anagram puzzle at 1:49am, with the solution at 2:16 ..., lots of fun in the chog.
happily horribly busy?
Hi Christine. I did see that
Heringernallady - do the newspapers do accrostics, or cryptic crosswords?
Cryptics
Did you see your name change? blame it on my fremlins/
yes, very happily horribly busy :D
Ata was Moot recent?
oxonmoot? no, in a few weeks
Ok
If you have 3 minutes to spare and want to feel happy watch this.....http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Nc9xq-TVyHI&feature=player_embedded
thats so cuuute!
I know, and the dog looks so happy - I thinks labs just went to the top of the most intelligent list
Labs think with their gut
Lynxx Four Weddings Tonight Channel 7 will ahve someone in it that I know
haven't seen that show, is it worth watching?
Nope probably not It is reality tv.
good morning everybody
hi ruby
morning Ruby
just back from the French tax office, what a nightmare! And the vocabulary is very difficult for me, but a lot better than it was the first couple of years
Lynxx have you seen the new KFC advert?
no - ?
I can't believe that word is in the grid, and plural, too!
Well it is so insulting to Vegetarians and um Hindi
Do you have to lodge tax in person Ruby?
This girl is not a vegetarian on Thursdays because her family have KFC night
they are asking for something new this year in addition to proving that I pay American income tax. It is so complicated and husband is no help at all.
You can't use a french accountant?
I'll have to, but by the time we're finished with this and that, we won't be able to afford one!! lol
and Friday I see the lawyer about the "dog affair"
You will be glad to escape back into your garden
Good Ruby
and husband is angry at me because when he took my copier to be fixed, they said it would have to be replaced! It's not broken, I just can't get the new ribbon in!
into
sorry, is there any coffee in the pb? I'm frazzled
maybe they just don't have the ribbon
no, I have the ribbon, just couldn't get it in. I think he just couldn't explain it
So why don't you get a neighbour to do it? I had the same embarrising thing happen except that the printer needed to be on when I put the ink in. Maybe you can look on google how to do it
he is very shy about speaking French
I have the instruction book and I think it is a very simple matter. I'll just have to fiddle some more. He was going to that store anyway.....
this is a strange grid with several words over and over
That's funny, I just saw the word you are having trouble with Ruby. ta8
atalante is back AND in the grid! Is that a coincidence or a conspiracy?
ooh, and a related an7
conspiracy, utterly!
hahah. It's nice to see you a**
how are the legs Ata?
had another MRI yesterday *sigh*
I miss the E
not going backwards again?
ahah, that's my problem!
that is a lot of MRI's, a**
we'll see in a few days!
Ata did you hurt yourself again?
possibly, we're not very sure yet!
natto is a perfectly good Japanese food word but a basically icky eating experience!
phantom: gymea - australian lily, amazingingly huge flower, up to 20 feet tall
you have to fly over in a helicopter to see it?
that was misleading, the stalk the flower grows on can be 20 feet tall
Morning/evening all
it was a great image, though, a flower for the gods!
hello FM, very nice to see you!
hi FM
FM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ata!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! where have you been? Hi lynxxx, ruby and herin :)
far too busy!
uh oh, stomping. See you later!
bye ruby.
no, he went out. Good!
HI I was just getting food
am watching the pandorica opening .... :)
oh ok hello ruby :)
what is pandorica?
Mis Ata is that your dragon you drew?
it's a dr who episode :)
sounds like it should be the start to a great symphony doesn't it?
It is a goodie Ata.
we don't get that here, even with satellite
yep!
The Dragon????? It is aweomse
which dragon?
Next to your knott work?
oh, no thats a friend's dragon
The Dragon is pwetty
dinner is made of win
Hope you all can see my icon - for Scrabbler as it is her birthday today.
I did see
*poof*
oh good, never quite sure if it has updated properly or not.
weather is miserable today, mizzling rain with heavy downpours to come.
mizzling? is that miserable drizzling?
it's horrid here too
lol exactly lynxxx.
Did you know there is this store called Target and they sell business wear
aside from a lot of our Sate flooding , we have been having lots of lovely rain, best for 4 years
Sate = State
that is good news lynxxx apart from the flooding bit.
as a country person said, better flooding than bushfires - at least you get a warning
true
BBS need to check pot in oven
yay there's ROry!
Need to head desk
yay I see the Lipstick tree is back in the grid again, ued to appear very frequently.
oh herin, why?
Because I need a suit a practical suit
Girls suits are stupidly expensive
know that feeling, received a small catalogue the other day, had a look through and thought mm nice trousers and they all cost over £100!
pair of jeans £89 - chucked out catalogue.
I don't get it. Guys suits fit and they are $200 for a good suit and sometimes 2 pants as well or a shirt
Its a pain in the butt isn't it.
My size is 18 DD 42inch high waist so nothing fits
yup too short too long wrong cut.
Too small in the bust or fits in the bust and too big in the middle.
I figure that I have to look into it now so I can layby for jobs
good thinking. How about having a look for a local tailor or dressmaker who could modfy a suit to fit you?
Yah my friend is on telly
might cost a bit but would be a good investment if you got a classic style.
yay
It is that show Four Weddings
not sure we get that over here.
You did
It is sooooo tacky
on Living
The lass that we know did a Pagan wedding.
ah I am only on terrestrial so thats why.
And tonight is these two role playing nerds doing a wedding
the mind boggles!
N and D did it and they got to go to all the other weddings paid for by the show
BRB there is a fly in the office that is driving me nuts and I am going to get it out the window or die inthe attempt!
N and D had fun but the hard part was her being pregnant and being tired
back
he Ata, want to see our joint birthday present...I really like her.....http://www.graysonline.com/lot /0072-186383/dorothy-bradford-seated-n ude-est-500-1000
oh wow!!
What did Mr lynxx think when he saw the actual pic lynxxx?
Fly dispatched out of the window successfully.
Not as enthusiastic as me - but thought iut was very good value for money. Don't think that that is any sort of criteria for buying art myself
yes, art is a very personal thing.
that said - it is bl**dy big and the frame is lovely and it is mounted very well
Ata, Tony Blair is on the prog "This Morning" seems so strange but I guess he is plugging his book.
that does seem odd!!! I knew I was watching old Dr WHo episodes for a reason!
Have you guys seen "The Ghost Writer", speaking of Blair
no lynxx, do expand.
I recommend it, v good movie - not directly based on Blair (maybe a bit though)
ooh shall do a bit of googling on that later, thanks lynxxx
I hear that the ghost writer was good
Some fun words in the grid today
but also some that need the monkeys.
found all the 8s though without help :)

u know its a bad grid when the first word u see is that horrid c word and in plural
It finally happened. I dreamed I was playing babble.
But it's a good grid for patriots. Patriotic men, I guess.

Nuttin? As in "I've got plenty o' nuttin?"
Na6, weiik.

well her 2 fav's Annie GC and bunnies. Morning weiik
and at least Haz is away on hols so they won't fight over him this year *grin*
yes, i know, she will love it
Hope you are doing well Annie - I am in sorta lurk mode but had to pop in for a mo.
I have become dependent on the list after I find all the words that I can...is there any sort of date when Dr_God will have the new format...anyone know?
I have 30 left...boo hoo
Aparently he has put it on the back burner for a little while as his 'real' work is keeping him busy.
thanks FM, understandable
Can you work with the clue list in Jaculas profile or BabAnon? IF not shout if you need anything and if I am not on the phone etc I will try to help :)
This grid has a lot of words that are spelled wrong!
thanks, FM, I will
oh, an I thought it was just my spelling?
No more Lickety's?
I got plenty o' nuttin.
I think Lickety took a well deserved rest today
Lickety is not always able to provide the list these days due to work and family.
But just today?
Work and family...can't they wait?
WhaT?
Lickety!!!!!!!
LOL, Hi lickety!!!
We were just talking about you!
Good to see you.
and I was about to type that Lickety is seperate from Dr_G (nothing to do with Babble) and that he started his list as a project.
Extra credit to Lickety!
oK - i Know the issue
yesterday - anyone know what they were?
there are many newcomers who think Lickety & Dr_G and one and the same.
2 words from yesterday - I had two too many
g5 & 6 go's I think
Hope you know how much we all appreciate your help
I believe the extra words were ga 5 and 6
It's so by chance that I dropped into the chat box
That drove everyone nuts. They wanted gazoo so bad!
Good to see the old faces ;-)
Round of applause for Lickety.
Not OLD! but - a long time since
*claps madly*
*yay Lickety*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
heheheheh ahahahahahahhhhhaaaa
Fireworks!
Isn't it nice to be popular?
Now, seriously ....
We love lickety !!!!!
does anyone know the 2 words that I had on clues yesterday that were not in the grid?
Hello Lickety!
one was ga 5/24 and the ga 6 after it
Annie just told you Lickety
ga 5 and 6
ga 5 and 6 - is not the words
it was yesterday's grid, so fess up!
I wish we could get Dr_G to take the c word out of the grid.
ga 5 and 6 are the clues ;-)
Gazoo?
Gazoos?
That's what I thought it was!
I thought so too
Hey FMitch - what ever happened to the Babble reskin?
ditto f mitch. ditto
but I didn't really think Fred Flintstone's friend was a real word!
need clues for the 8 words. got the 9 and one 8: mu but need others. cant get them.
Hi Lickety
ack phone back as soon as I can
Hi everyone - Boobear - sounds like a sad teddy
Clues are up
Not an ear on a breast
hi lickety. welcome to the grid. isnt it night there?
bless you, lickety
ty lickety
need 3 more words to go to your list lickety. only have 41 so far.
I'm just taking a quick break from working the night shift
ty for clues lickety
thank you lickety
Can anyone clue the at8 please? Just don't seem to be able to get it at all.
back from getting my 1983 baby blue mustang convertible towed
I need it too Sandie
:'(
Oh no JMC!
had to finally give it to charity
*sobs loudly*
at8 builds on the ta6/18
(hands tissue to JMC and a shot of whiskey) {{{hugs}}}
clue for the am 5 please
hmmm - perhaps I'll come back to it.
thanks for the tissue but 9 am is a tad early for whiskey even for me
so many close words.
It's 5:00 somewhere and sometimes you just need a bracer....
lol *downs the wiskey
the sun is over the yardarm somewhere!
wooooooooooooa got another 8. ta: what caused the revolution in the u.s.: ta****** without representation.
passed half way pooint.
It is hard to say goodbye to an old friend...I always cry when I turn in my cars or have them towed away for the last time.
TY MKG!
<===still suffers from ta8 without representation
it is and this was my son's first car and the one he learned to drive stick on
Well done MKG! This is a toughie!
Oh JMC! So many memories!
great memories of driving up the Natchez trace on a warm August night with fireflies and rock'n'roll on the radio and the top down
anyone have any clues out there? am on lickety now.
am still struggling with the at8. Just can't seem to get it. Nothing owrks at all.
I had a white Camaro with T-tops that I felt the same way about!
if you haven't driven the Natchez Trace I totally recommend it as the most beautiful drive in the United States -- and I have driven a lot of the United States
Where is it JMC?
it is between Jackson Miss and Nashville TN
sandie, at + to besmirch + plural letter
at8 - at+ a nasty taste in the plural, Sandia
of course - didn't see the plural. Thanks a lot.
it was created when the farmers would ride down the Mississippi on log rafts to sell goods in New Orleans including the logs and then walked home
I would love it!
the hundreds of men and women walking home wore a path so deep you can still see it 2 and 3 feet deep along the drive
super clues. ty.
hi ther. Could someone give a different clue for a nasty tast or besmirch
jmc , sounds wonderful
it goes through cypress swamps and old pine forests and is beautiful
I am just not getting the clues, but I am very distracted so hopefully that is the reason!
sorry! I should hush up
Not at all! I have 2 kindergartens here with me!
it is a wonderful drive though *falls into memories of the drives along the trace*
oh well 2 kinders would distract anyone
clue for am 7 please
It is their first day of school too!
which a does the at 8 come from?
a + male + senor***
how fun!
Good morning
i took a photo of my boy and his friends on the first day of school until he graduated HS
ty Sandie
ty sand
hi bob
hi Mr. Bob
hi again. A different clue for the at 8, please
at - the word for food that is spoiled + pl.
need an 7 clue. i have the 4 before.
rotten? trash? garbage?
an7 - against having to pay money to the state.
ty sand
mkg, use that 4 and add what you pay the government
JMC...the TA 5/10 is to mar or spoil something (like one's reputation). Rhymes with what you put on your walls to add color
the only consolation about the tow is that the tow truck is blocking the neighbors who forced the issue -- i hope they are VERY inconvenienced
ty ty car sorry to be so dense
<==emotionally distraught
just a little payback there jmc )
Took me a while to figure it out too JMC! No apologies!
welldone, tow truck
i have that ta word but didn't make the connection to food
I am so lost with this at. Which a does it strat with
attaint
ack
*hides head in shame*
Yup! That would be it! Now plural!
that's it jmc. TY so much. And ty to everyone else
lol, good clue
*runs to the pb to find some coffee*
glad to help bichon! lol
*puts bagels and cream cheeese into PB*
it doesn't help that i gave my son my coffee maker thinking i could just pick up a new one and haven't been able to find one that doesn't dance a jig and sing the star spangled banner while making weak coffee
mmm cream cheese
clue for an 6 please
ty for an 7 clue! never could have gotten it.
lol jmc, i think a dancing, singing coffee maker is a bit far fetched but I know what you mean the new ones have so many bells and whistles that arn't needed
an + vowel + double cons +vowel. middle bit sounds like a word we use for gossip. best I can do.
i don't want to grind my beans the night before and i tried the coffee from stidgpere's fancy maker at the strongest level was still on the light side
need first am 5 please.
a + m*** street
ty
help with the y please, I've driven my monkies into the ground looking for something there
what are the stats for either Y word please
uh-oh
guess i'm not alone LOL
we're in trouble now! lol

JM, almost 10 (girl), 6 yr old boy, almost 3 yr old girl--starting grades 4, 1 + preschool today.
fun ages (but then most ages are fun)
ahhh her 10th, a big day in a little girls life. Will she have a party for her birthday Scrabs?
help with the A in the corner please
double digits is a big event
atna
We placed the cupcakes on a plate that Mary had made to use for birthday celebrations. One of those plates you paint/draw on, then seal + heat.
oops,, sorry
at 6---on of our babblers and a grown boy
not it tceicher but thanks for playing
Yes, she will have more than one party---family, friends...
ty annie
Hi tceicher
ah good
So Mary's baby is almost 3...
Yep, on Oct 7. 3 yrs ago Mary was pregnant + dizzy, trying to maintain the pregnancy as long as possible. Little did we know that she had brain cancer.
I remember that time quite clearly..so so sad
how sad
Finally at 37 wks labor was induced because Mary was wobbly, dizzy, puking + needed baby out so a MRI could be done.
oh that is intense.
So tragic, m9. She died 1 yr and 6 days after the baby was born, after a year of suffering.
oh... I'm SO sorry!
so much heartache
this your daughter?
I have never dealt with such a difficult grief process ever before in my life.
if I recall correctly, Scrabs, she spent some of that time preparing things for the milestones in the children's lives?
My friend, m9. Kids are now 9, 6 and almost 3.
VERY tough on kids!
scrabbs, didnt she prepare a memory garden for the children?
gotta go screen is blurred with tears for your friend and my husband
*poof*
bye jmc
(((jmc))))
She did write in a journal, and dictated some info on tapes. It was difficult for her + all of us to reconcile her Christian faith (God is in control) with leaving husband with 3 little kids and no mommy (why would that be part of God's plan?).
Enough sadness. Let's tackle this grid!
yes. 39 to go!
54 for me
scrabbs, did you open FM's profile?
Nope, but I will.
oh you must. you will love it.
funny annie!
good morning - no more sadness, just a word to Scrabbler that Mary will be remembered even by those who did not know her! I was just joining Babble at the time and I remember it very well - sending out hugs to you, her family and circle of friends
Adorable! How did she do that?
hi JBV!
Mille grazie, mia amica, JBV.
scrabbs, FM is a wonder.
Scrabs - listen to this - I went to our local community college yesterday to take a placement test for an Italian course......
RiverDance's birthday was yesterday, as well as Aloy's.
and I placed out of all the levels they offer - so the professor offered to meet with me individually to help me polish up my Italian
And you are fluent? (Hahaha)
sweet!!! that is cool JBV!
I expect I will have to pay her as a tutor, but we haven't worked that out yet
Wow! Had you studied Italian in the past? Or did you learn it that quickly?
Oh, Hi m9! Thank you for your help yesterday - we are still on the trail of the true ancestor!
It's the 14 verb tenses that make me stumble as I study Italian.
m9, are you also Italian?
but the hunt is fun!
nope.
* tripping in, rubbing eyes * morning all
Scrabs, Italian is in my DNA, but never spoke it as a child - learned Spanish and French in school, so I had a really good language background, then took 1 course in Italian, three trips to Italy and that's it! it clicked!
But working on genealogy?
yup
Hi Pini
hi pini
must start my day..hi pini, bye dear babblers
JBV, it is time for me to resume studying. I have a book on verbs, with exercises.
<-- wish I knew Italian - would have been nice to be able to talk with family when I visited...
Bye Annie!
hi/bye annie ;)
yes, we have some mysteries surrounding my grandfather's immigration to NY and marriage...
where Pini?
bye bye Annie
You have family there too?
hi Pini
Northern Italy (Possagno)
my brother visited recently and he paid a translator $600 to take them to the hometown for the family reunion
3 of my grandfather's siblings did not come to the US, so I have relatives in Sicily.
Good plan, JBV
scrabs, don't forget to check out the wordreference.com language forum - you can interact with native speakers
(I did get to stay with them in the 'family' home...in the family since 1640) * smile *
yes, he said it was the best $600 he ever spent - it would have been impossible without his professional help
that is so wonderful, Pini
I checked last week. I really need to study consistently rather than intermittently. I always say "Someday I will be conversational in Italian." Someday is now.
Cool, Pini!!
I think I'll change my photo - I have a picture of our "ancestral" home, too - maybe not to 1640, but definitely from the 1800s
it was pretty special...the birth place of my great- grandmother
Do you have a pic, Pini?
I should find one of her photos...she was a wonderful woman (I remember her fondly)
The happiest of birthdays, Scrabbler!!!! And Hi everybody else...
TY, Soodlebum!
hi Soodle!
I'll work on that, scrabs!
and happy birthday Scrabbler!
Grazie, JBV

yw hursh
what about the lone A in the middle of the second row? that will give me NBT.
hi all, and my phantom is gumption
gumption is also a phantom in my character.
sorry, I'm not very good at telling where the words originated from. I do have all the a's but not sure which one you need
ooh, found an 8
well, LWG, it would have to be something that couldn't come from one of the other two A's, because it's the last A.
the middle A must use the A to its left, otherwise it would not come from the middle A but from the other one. But that's all I know, don't have it yet
am5
might be the an 7/48 - against the IRS
okay, just found it!
its AM5!! *yells*
oh heck, did not, it's not the am5
no, i have the am5 and it's not it. unless there are 5 am5s
i mean 2 am5s
must be
there are 2 am 5/12's
am 5/12 - remove the es from when you can't remember anything
am 5/12 a + the primary street in town
THAT'S IT i confirm cuz my light went out LOL
the remember clue, is the middle A
glad mystery is solved!
*pokes head out of work-hole* is it safe out there??
safe?? SAFE???

overly exciting can be over rated lol
or you could say MA 6/24 a supernatural being that controls nature; a spirit, deity, or object that possesses supernatural power.
don`t forget to plural.
lots of odd words today.
hi lbd
Piers Morgan to replace host Larry King on CNN network.......what ever next.

hi pav
how are the poopies?
Hello, Pav :-)
hi Pav! famous or infamous?
I'm famous here at home, and at work, but to the rest of the world I', no one of importance
we're in our summer cabin and my kitchen doesn't have all the wonderful things I can't live without..I'm managing and think of you and the meringue lol
the poopies are begging for relief from t he heat...and I'm scared of damaging our loving relationship by plugging in the clippers and traumatizing them
at least I have hot water!
just hose them down, pav
oh poor them..would be a nice relief though
put them in the shower
*puts meringue in a box to mail to pav*
they should make silent clippers
did I not mention I gave up on blow dryers years ago ?
Hi everyone. This is a strange grid. I kept looking for words from that lower right corner (forgot to scroll down and see the Tile Stats grid)
LOL, hello, Nef
hi nef lol

over the counter pav lol
Hi everyone!
I lobe sherbet..I've been indulgin...er, we've been indulging in the rainbow sherbet varieties...
I'm a fan of Natures Way Lactase pills. I've found Lactaid brand less effective for me.

clue for the second mu 4/6
eeeewww, nekkid dogs! not a pretty thought
is that the Mu5ters, boo?
I guess not lol
or i mu4 be crazy
indeed you are DC! lol
hah dawg :)
could be that mangy mu**
that's the 3rd mu4, west.
mu**y, mildewy, stuffy, stanky
oh I wasn't counting
there's an mu that should be a word..something to do with bean sprouts
mung. indeed
mung
i tried that a few times, west!
I agree westford. Why isn't that included in the grid?
I just did again to make sure lol
lol
The bean is capitalized
I'll be darned
mungy
was it named after Mr. Mung?
non-capitalized it's computer slang so of course not in Enable
mung: erect bushy annual widely cultivated in warm regions of India and Indonesia and United States for forage and especially its edible seeds; chief source of bean sprouts used in Chinese cookery; sometimes placed in genus Phaseolus
not capitalized
hi torg!
hi, torg
you guys are better than google
hi torg
what is the computer slang?
mash until no good
so, mung (which isn't capitalized in seains' reference) is a Proper Noun (I'm guessing) but tu 4/7 is okay? Very odd sometimes...
tu4 and groove you mean?
LOL, lbd! that's hilarious!
tu oil
seain LOL!!
Heyas kids .. as usual, lots of different sources for words that should be in the grid ..

hi Nef
Mung is a word!
oh oh it's Kaplan the Sheriff
Kaplan, we might all be doing that. What are we missing?
kaplan we ALL agree LOL
just not accepted in the grid, today.
Is it sometimes accepted?
when Dr G makes it part of his word list.
As in: We Make Words, and God Laughs?:
going to make nachos..see you all later
oh my monkeys aren't working today
Bye west, put some nachos in the PB, this grid's gonna put all of us in it...lol
What did we say?
just foretelling the future...
Can you do that?
well, I'm bound to type the wrong place at some point....
im so stuck at cu 5/14
ti nt
it's a pl of a derogatory name for females, cos
Oh she's a little cu***change last letter to a consonant
Or when you are at a dance, someone says " may I cu***?) when they want to take you from yr partner.

Hi Babs, a sweet potato + a prefix
and then plural
like the arabic country change ye to ya, then plural
dont you mean suffix?
Thanks Mom!!
you're welcome Babs
next mystery is the n's
No Cos, the last two letters of the word would be a prefix as in **tied, **stoppable, etc. :)
Babs, sounds like: zero, zilch, no**
i always thought that was suffix lol oops
a suffix is at the end of a word.
:-)
thats what i thought it was.. im just confusing myself lol
ah, it took me a while to figure them out as well, but I have several years on you. :)
Babs, do you have the nu 8/45?
nu 8 just like the mu8
hey mom!
which is also similar to the na8
Good, would you care to clue the NU 6/21, please?
{{TO}} good evening! How are you?
just like the mu6 ninja turtles

oh geez, thanks Good
Time for me to scoot off here. See you all later. {{Hugs}} to all of you

nu 8 ... a pecan or a walnut nu + one n***** under God
mu8 is a variation of my6/24
oops...mU6/24

hooray for Babs :-)
gu9 is stomach (double const) + that same ending as the 8s
thanks GE
yw

The middle looks fudgy!
Hi Scrabbler, Stidmat and I are working together today.
*waving to the Stid Crew*
This is a chocolate cake, three layers, we both wave back to you and share the frosting, too.
do you have the ma 6/21?? If so, the ma 6/24 just has a different last vowel
i am off choco cake...trying to perfect the cake in a mug and i have eaten parts of two unsat results in the last week:(

Pounce MOrning
Hi daykat. How is Wednesday?
Hi Scrabbler - wednesday was good - its Thursday already!
Scrabbler welcome to your future
and this year - do you ever cross paths with dick?
hi herin!
i mean richard?
Oh, right, today is Wednesday. The US had a holiday on MMonday (Labor Day) so I am confused
I am babysitting the Grand-cat while daughter and s-in-law are off to Bali for a week
ok going now, need some margarita sorbet
Nope, Owl, and I have had no contact. He did call my current office manager a few months ago about an insurance issue. He was very rude toward her.
Grand-cat is sitting on my shoulder so forgive any typos!
What is the cat's name?
Bobby. He's a pure white cat. The dogs are quite spooked by him - think he's a ghost cat!!
Albino?
oh scrabs i am in a huge fight today with blue shield, my BP is through the roof
No I dont think so - just all white. Very smoochy.
awww kity
Why, Owl?
Dayk Is kitty deaf?
Talk about a spoiled cat. He has his own furry igloo thing to sleep in, porcelain feeding bowls. No he's not deaf - does that go with being an albino?
albino animals aree usually deaf
and animals with blue eyes are as well.. usually
no I dont think he's albino - certainly not deaf. He thinks he's in heaven here with all the birds about and 18 acres to explore though I growl at him when he even so much as thinks about stalking a bird!
BBS, mu4 forage for dinner.
k i hhave 12 left and am completely stumped
well diagnoses, without getting personal, read condition x - unknown origin. They refused to pay for tests performed but how in the world would dr know thw origin unless he ruled out causes that would show in the blood like pupus and thyroid?
uh oh time to run, bye all
Day ythey are lucky Pandora is not Albino just white and she slowly went deaf
really, cosdem? Is that true for cats with blue eyes? (I'm thinking that most siamese cats are blue-eyed, aren't they?
anyone got a clue for mu6/24 (the first one)
mostly in dogs
Nef blue and white fur
we had a dog once with one blue and one brown eye.
Speaking of which damn and dumber need a bath
mu 6/24 (1st one) are the wood dividers in windows
anyone have na 8/40
is that the name of your dogs, herin?
Cats and no. Pandora and Lucius. ONe is white one is black.
Na tat ion
CRAAAAAAAAAp
na 8/40 is similar to nu 8/45 and mu 8/50
Great clue, herin! ;-)
Pandora was never taught to bath her self her back end near her tail is a bit dirty
Don't text and chat it is made of fail
TY herin:)
LOL! :-)

Nef Pandora is white she has an amazing ability NOT to lick her butt
ma 6/21 is a water animal, ma 6/24 is a diff. vowel at the end and ma 7/36 is pl
ni5/10 please
I was writing a long response to you, herin about my dtr's cat; and it disappeared. Her cat was kicked out of the litter by the mom when she was 5 weeks old; my dtr. raised her since then
sorry daykat; I don't have it
ok
thanks
awwww Nef my kitty doesn't really know how to clean herself
found it
Ni + heavy unit of weight
We got Pandora after about 5 months of neglect
that's a cute name for a cat.
Not my choice.Lucius is thoough
ty nef
but man...i totally had to scroll down and read the chat....because walking in and reading "amazing ability NOT to lick her butt" had me flabberghasted when i first walked in
:)
I should have explaned that
you did. it all makes sense. i just walked in on it at the wrong time. lol
LOL! You never know what people may be talking about here
Pandora was not taught to bath as she was palm sized when found on the side of the road as a wee little kitten. Then the ass that had her negelected her. Now she does clean her self but would much rather wet herbutt in the shower and walk off
i have cats. i should've known.
wow, herin! I once had a cat that liked bubble baths; but none of the others I've had or known of have preferred a shower!
No you know that bit of water left over in the shower that. She does like baths too
ok

Ooh, Dorens, when I was a teenager, we saw Burton in "Hamlet", at the Old Vic, with Claire Bloom. The women behind me raved over Bloom, but thought Burton was 'adequate'. What a voice he had.
I am desperately trying to increase my fruit and veg intake.
he was IT as far as I'm concerned!
Yummmm

merchant of venice

I once sat on stage for Emanuel Ax and YoYo Ma... it was enchanting!
wow I was just kidding didn't know you could do that
behind them... two rows of seats were added... it was on my mother's birthday... best present i ever gave her! we were right behind them!
I don't get out much lol
Dorens I would do it
I'd like that as a birthday present
and I got to go along with her!!
Dorens, I bet it was fabulous! (back from the laundry again; last load in dryer now)
we were all set to see Nanci Griffith tomorrow night and she canceled

I know I'm disappointed but hope she gets well soon
the united na****s..
na 6/18 is the country we live in
i have that one Dorens - I need the first NA 6/18
There are two na6/18's. The other is na + consonant + picnic pest
stick in oh won't you s**y, just a little bit longer after the na, for the 8

Sort of combine the two na6,18's and you get the na8
The nu8 is like that too.

Goodbye westford! I will see you later in the chat log
thx all ... any ideas ... other than toast and tea?
(oh, ps...not 'sick'...more like food poisoning)
Two phantom words today are maintain and mutiny.
food poisoning? don't eat toast then!
oh...whoops! why not?
4 to go and they are all A's.
if really food poisoning, no food for a bit.. it will just give the bugs something to churn up (if truly food poisoning, just push fluids)
down to 3 and they're all m's... jindigo we should get together here
thx dorens...I'll keep the fluids going...
firewords (and pini, i'm not a doctor. so maybe i don't know what i'm talking about)
congrats, doren
Dorens - this one has really worked mylittle gray cells
wtg dorens (and it's ok...anything advice is worth listening to)
(gads, it's affected my spelling skills - what little I had left)
just googled it.. i was right... + avoid caffeine and sugary drinks... clear fluid. small frequent sips
it's testing my nerves, too, jindigo
and rest!
oh yes... these small + deadly grids can be very evil. any clues needed before i pop off?
perfect, dorens...doing just that (will refrain from having another piece of toast)... THX! :)
I have a deadline of 10pm EST - don't think I will make it.
if you have poisioned yourself with suspect food,it is best to make up a charcoal/water solution to absorb the nasties and throw it up.then follow with plenty of fluids and a dr visit...i once did myself in with bad egg rolls
Congratulations Dorens on your fireworks!Way to go
when you can tolerate fluids without nausea or diarrhea, then begin with rice, toast etc.
egads...thankfully it's not that bad, crossy!!!!!
more than 24 hours, then you see MD
doren? i sent yo uan email but would ask you to delete it pls?
BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast)

no no no, i am the counselor, remember? (like with a master's in counseling, etc!)

our parents...
well not at the moment, let's not rush it
either that, ruru, or just ailing in one way or another
i hope not ..
just rying to deal with not being able to do cleaning
My 2 phantom words today are maintain and mutiny.
hi, all
hey HI PAMMO!!!!!!!!!!
cleaning? not able to do it? that will never be a problem for me... i will deal with it just fine!
RURURURURU!!!!!
hey pam

ruru.. when do you come east? I know we pale in comparison to wine country, CA, but Pam and I can take you out to lunch, and that would be such fun
(why passing out?)
it *would* be fun!
it is sooooo delicious
what did TO mean by overreacting? Ididn't get it
ok. i believe you. will have them make me the farro salad, for sure!

Blessing be TO
oh.. is she managing his care?
i think that's what it may relate to, but am not certain. She's been under a ton of stress.
oh.. that's too bad..
Hi lbdawger! How are you doing? Welcome to the grid
for those having to take care of their elderly parents, i highly recommend reading "The 36 hour day"
hi Min, i'm doing well, and yourself?

i am literally laughing out loud now ruru! you bad boy
Would love to say that about the MIL Ru
it really is a good book, although written with alzheimer patients in mind, it can be related to all aspects of aging.
i loved my mother in law fiercely. actually stayed with her the last few days of her life (at home) and she died first night of rosh hashanah with all family there. Just lit a candle in her memory earlier this evening. 28 years ago. Still miss her, what a woman!

I see my mother weekly and take her shopping and around for errands. I also help with cleaning up her house and doing repairs at this point.
hi, Feather.
I would understand if it was a cute pic of them in high school at a dance or something memorable but it isn't. And she doesn't have any pics of him up in the house.
*agreeswith ruru*
Hello featherbee! How are you doing? Welcome to grid

doren, much to my mother's surprise week before last, she told me that my sister told her that she think's mom's depressed and should see a psychologist. To mom's surprise, i agree with my sister. First time in many, many years i saw my mother look that shocked.
Dorens b.f and I used to be really snippy to each other after visiting them now we just accept that
hey, dan :)

I bring it up now and again, Feather, and i'm pushing for it gently.
yay Min!
both her brothers and an uncle of theirs are/were clinically depressed.
I'll be here off and on to clue for the rest of the night
Hello...
congrats, minver
yay min!
if brother and sister agree... sounds like good advice. yay min herin, good for you... he should understand what she's doing
evening, jellen
I think i may go raid the opshop
Hi Jellen bobbie hugs for you
hopefully she'll take you up on the advice
ruru, was reading back.picking a home for your parent(s)is a hard go,you spend a hot of time to find a place where they dont just push their wheelchair in a corner and forget about them,if they are not well endowed you have to figure out their pension in combination with govt subsidies to get as close to the monthly home bill as you can,and sometimes sadly you have to sift through a lifetime of stuff and memories of a entire persons lifetime and ruthlessly cull it as a room in a home is much smaller than a house.if their mental capacity comes and goes, you may get derided and cursed for your choices even though it was done with love...not fun at all ruru
opshop?
hi jellen, and good night to all. min will clue and i will go to bed!
YAY Min~ (((hugs and choclits for all)))

FEATHER!! I TAUGHT a (single, to one class only) LESSON today!!! It went... poorly. Too many rookie mistakes. A lot to do better tomorrow.
anyways ..crossy jumps off the soapbox once again..;)
I had the 8 but not the 6 - fish slap
awww, that's ok! nobody ever becomes a master at anything without making mistakes to learn from. as long as you don't make the same mistakes twice, you'll be fine!
ah, looked up op shop. new term to me. :) cool, good luck, herin :)
stid, i agree with feather
there's a good reason you're making rookie mistakes, stid.
cause you're a rookie. don't let it get you down.
I hope that will be true, feather. not making same mistake twice, that is... but I seem to be making an awful lot even just as a helper in the classroom! *hangs head*
THat is the way to do it Stid. Just don't take crap and they will respect you. AND the other big thing is do as you expect them to do. Don't be late don't leave to go potty 2 min into class and don't leave stuff in the teachers lounge you need. I just wish my teacher would do this she has 0 respect from us
LOL LeslieAnn!
can't be perfect the first time out, Stid. otherwise you'd be a robot.
macs..mmm..i have heard people use those...lol
DC I should have said thrift store
shhh, stid, here's a secret....every teacher was a student teacher once, and every teacher did the same things you are doing once.
i usa a mac :) so does my Tom
thanks seain. and LBD. and lady, you are right. THOSE are mistakes I do NOT make. Too much military training as a child...
rofl, feather! that's what they are telling me!
you'll get there!
It is so true Stid my teacher sits there and can't believe why we are rude and disrespectful but she just doesn't have a clue
I'm looking fwd to the meet-up in Philadelphia on Saturday. :-) I'm riding up there with JMC
AND I am so sure that the mistakes you would have made would have been head deskers like not saying a kids name righ
i had my first day with the kids today
oh, I wish I could go to that one tooo... *wails* meet-ups are WAY less stressful than teaching!
Feather I showed you that fun funraising idea?
yet only one pays, stid...
we pass Philly Int'l on the way into town, Stid :D
oh, there are so many unfamiliar names and spellings lady... I am having to ask students several times to tell me how to say their names. But I will get it eventually.
am in a mild state of catatonic exhaustion. really should get up and go to bed, but getting up takes too much energy.
yes herin, thanks
cool, feather :)
I just couldn't remember
oh! how did it go feather? (((Hugs and hugs))) *puts blankie on feather and soft pillow under head*
James Spader needs to goto the PB. He just said the mu 6/24 word in "Pretty in Pink". This is the 1st time I'm watching a film & hearing someone say a word in that is in the puzzle.
Stid my ex named her kid some gawd awful bogan (redneck) name spelling
well, it wentzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
thanks for that word min -- isn't it a window part?
mu6 is a window part or a type of lamb
and I am done
lol, seriously, it went well. seems to be a good group. one who cried for about 20 seconds at the beginning, got over it. cried at the end, but that was mostly exhaustion. another who was mostly shut down on me, didn't respond to any questions, etc. i'm thinking there are some processing issues going on there, as he did come up and give me a hug and start talking on his own, but when i asked him a question right after that, he did the blank look again. the rest seem to be nice...i have almost all the names down, have to think on one or two stilll.
LOL feather, that's how I felt today, too! (then I had the rest of my morning coffee after I picked up the boys so now I am fine)
YAY lady!!!
congrats, hern
James Spader describes Molly Ringwald as a mu**** to Andrew McCarthy in high school and yes he is sitting on a windowsill in the hallway.Good memory stidmama
Congratulations herinfernallady on fireworks!Hooray
so far so good then, feather :) glad to hear
Thanks Min
yay herin
yw
yes, the class I taught today has a lot of kids with processing issues of one kind or another. So I didn't account for that enough, and the lesson will need repeating I think.
whooo hoooooo HERIN!!
but right around noontime, i was looking around wondering where my nice comfy couch was....
Now I have to go and beat mt washmore down as some idjiot doesn't know where the laundry basket it
But it might have needed repeating even if the experienced teachers had taught it...
Yay, herin!!!
I spent the day moving furniture from room to room.
firewords - the lone A was my last
Yay dan!!!
YAY Dan!!!
Congratulations dan2bit on fireworks! Good for you!
sounds like the plan, stid. repeated information is always helpful to all the kids
congrats, dan
whoooo hooooo DAN!!
have fun, lady
one thing i've been learning as a student in some things is that it really helps when the teacher lays out what will be done first, lays out an overview of what will be taught, then teaches
woo-hoo! found an 8!!!!
i find that helpful, feather, as it allows for better planning in studying
it gives you a framework to go by
that is true, another thing I forgot, feather. *sigh*
anyone know am 5/12?
tell them what you're going to teach them, teach them, let them practice, then review what you taught them.
i see the words ta8 without representation daily, yet it was my 60th word. and i had the ta4 ages ago.
so many things that I "know" but am not yet accustomed to putting into practice.
it takes practice, stid. once you get the knack of it, it becomes routine for you and the students
wow seain.
it will come.
am5 street
No offense to men folk here but what is it with men or ok women that have the stupid washing basket on their side of the room and they still dump everything on the floor and then expect the magic cleaning fairy has ESP to find and wash said clothes (mostly undies and socks)
am5 surrounds egg, and is related to am6 fluid (am6 not in grid)
am 5/12 is a plus ma4/5 word and other is am*** acid replace last vowel with different vowel cosdem and hi
Congratulations cosdem on upgrading to pro! Hooray
practice on your family. This is what is going on today, this is for dinner, you will eat, then you will clean up your place. even if you just do this in your mind it will get you into that mind set
thanks LBD. I would be happier about this learning curve if I weren't trying to "prove myself" -- you know?
did he grow up in a 'magic household' where everything got cleaned/straightened for him w/out him seeing the work that goes into such?
rofl... I was doing EXACTLY that all evening so far!
you are your own worst critic, stid
Tom grew up in a 'magic household', which has made for some stresses :) as i did not.
usually, seain... *sigh* today I practiced saying the positive thing first, and then ... *shrug* oh well.
Stid just don't do what one of the child care workers did that I used to work with. Was totally into her childcare roll and forgot the off switch and started cubing her husbands prime steak. Dang funny
you'll come into your own w/it, really you will, stid :)

The big discussion this afternoon was why mung (as in the bean) was not in the grid.
what were the arguments, jilly?
that it was capitalized
that it was a word but not according to babble god
named for the Great Emperor of Mung of Bean?
ta5 after spoils
lol gort
someone found it listed as NOT capitalized

I will look into it. Surely seems very silly to me
too bad was there an explanation?
The guy at our local postal didn't know. I may try a larger one that will know
Maybe the local guy was just being careful.
just reading back, herin, I tried to send a particular tea to a friend in CA, couldn't do it, had to send it through the Tea Company which was very costly
tea isdifferent as it is a leaf product. If that makes sense. This is chocolate which is so manufactured
it applied to all food stuff
At one point we couldn't get Jello as it may come from mad cow even though it was an enzym and nothing to do with cow
hmm i brought chocolate from belgium home with me okay
I wish nobody had said CHOCOLATE
Sorry Jill

Now I have to go and get some...
As I said I don't take no for an answer I will look into it
