I'm perturbed about a "scene" I had with a girl who comes in the library where I work - she's about 12, and tried to sneak out with a whole pile of books, and some under her coat, and called me names when I made her give them up... lied even though it was obvious... wish I knew what to do about her, she's a big problem everywhere she goes.
and her mom always says everyone else is wrong... the little girl wouldn't do such things... :P
can't let her check out books, she never gives them back, we tried it already, and she's had more than one chance.

oh, most of the kids in town know she's not quite right, they tend to avoid her. Compulsive lying and causing trouble, stealing, lying about collecting money for charities - door to door! and spending it on junk food at the bar.

does she go to a school with a psychologist on staff? I don't think that intervening is a bad thing. Obviously, since her mother won't, somebody has to, before she does something terrible
she's in an "alternative" school, not the one in town here. which unfortunately means she's out and back home hours before the rest of the town kids, with nothing to do. I'm sure they have psychologists, they get all the "troublesome" kids.

Last summer I tried putting up a little poster in the post office, with library hours and info on little sheets in an attached pocket, and she stole the whole thing. We know it was her, because she was later seen passing out the schedules and telling everyone she could be found at the library during those hours so they could donate to one of her imaginary charities.

Can I throw in my tuppence worth? I think you should make a note of the incidents, write a letter to the parents indicating that because of these incidents you are going to refuse to allow the girl access to the library without adult supervision as per your library guidelines. Make sure you have the guidelines written first!

The library is very casual, lucky to be open at all with the economy the way it is. They've never really gotten official with guidelines, etc. Same lady ran it for ages, didn't see the need. Now I have to start from scratch, basically, on my own, they'll vote for whatever I suggest, mostly.
I think Rosebud and Ivesy should have some conversations
we are in the process of getting a new director. basically same thing happened. things fell by the way side.
Then find out what other libraries do in terms of guidelines, pinch the general ideas and tailor some so that this problem can be dealt with properly with you feeling that you have the back-up of accepted rules.

Not really much patronage, only 60-80 visits per week, mostly twenty-somethings on the computers and dear older ladies checking out books.
Yes, think of this as making sure that those children have a safe and quiet environment. The other girl obviously needs help but it's not help that you're equipped or qualified to give.
That's a good way to view it, I agree. No point in trying to help when I don't have a clue how. The board knows about her, I'm sure they won't blame me for any reason. Unless I lose my temper, which was getting harder today.

Went to Fisherman's Village to shop and also to a flea market in Ft. Myers on Friday.
It was always in the 70's, though, and that helped to get rid of the cold I had!

one of the prettiest rivers I know.. have been on it a lot.. we go to local flea market on Taylor Rd., Sat. morning.. also the farmers mkt on Sat. am.. were you there for the Sullivan Street fair or was that the week before.. no gators on hike but HUGE prints/tracks.. we stuck to the trail with a botanist.. saw a giant alligator on the banks of the river tho

they instituted a afterschool childrens reading club and the librarian took me aside (i was 12 at the time) and said that they knew i loved books and would i be interested in reading to a group of 6-10 year olds for a hour after school

I would love to be picked for jury duty. So far I've never been picked; but both of our kids have been! Our daughter was actually picked for jury duty at college and here at home in 1 year!
I was picked for a jury a couple years ago - aggravated sexual assault case - we put him away - its not an easy thing to do

River, that would have been hard. I have only served on one jury and that was for a civil case. The trial lasted 2 weeks but it was fascinating.
Here you serve for a month. Jury pull on the first Monday pulls juries for the next two weeks. Then you go back the 3rd Monday for another draw. If not picked you are done. You cannot serve here again for 2 years.
it was very emotional wht - both in the courtroom and deliberation room
I think that that is how they do it here also wht. But with my dtr.; she was away at school and voted there but came home and was on the voting records here too and got called. I don't think that they cross checked any records. (She was excused after a day for each of the trials as the juries were filled)

I bet. What I found hardest was not being able to talk about the case until deliberations began. That must have been even worse to have heard so much emotional testimony and not be able to process it with anyone.

Molly, I just shrink the profile sideways, stretch it vertically, and move it to the left of the grid, then toggle back and forth.
Molly - have you tried lining up a profile against your Word List, the fonts are about the same size
easier to cut and paste into a speadsheet. this gives you columns to work with.
