I have a bookcase filled with board games and toys such as Legos, Tinker Toys, etc, and I should clear that out now that my nephews are older. But when friends visit with their kids the kids love that bookcase.

I admire all musicians because I have never been able to play an instrument despite many attempts. I can't figure out how to read notes and then make my fingers do the right things--flute, violin, piano, guitar...
I tried the guitar, but it failed miserably.
I think it helps to start when you are young, scrabs.
And it amazes me to watch a band or orchestra do their thing in a coordinated manner...wow!
some of it is your body - i love guitar but my fingers are short. banjo worked better and i suspect manodlin would be even better
We just played with a high school orchestra, and it amazed us. Some of the players were better than we were!
I tried all of those when I was young. God did not put music ability into my brain,although I received other wonderful parts.

TO, the steel-cut oats are chewy but small (rolled oats are larger and flat). Steel-cut take about 1/2 hour to cook (or you can do them overnight in the crock pot).
I just ate raw oatmeal with yogurt and frozen berries mixed in--yummy.
i tried a new product called oat revolution, with flax seed. comes in dark chocolate too.

Well, Peter will graduate in May with a double major but I cannot see him joining the adult work force yet. He is still lacking in maturity, responsibility, work ethic.

I think it partly depends on what you are studying; physics and engineering take a lot of time
we only have about 4000 in loans after 8 years of college the last 2 at the 3rd most expensive school in the country
one of my graduate students told me that in his family, the grandparents put the grandkids through school
guess we were of the mindset that if you have to pay for it yourself, you're more likely not to to the party thing and more apt to get value for your money

About hybrids - be careful what you read about how green they are or are not, and be aware that to do a fair comparison you have to look at similar life-cycle analyses for regular cars. Also, Molly, I have a Prius that I bought 8 years ago; it's not that new a technology (and I really love my car!!!). Rare earth elements aren't actually all that rare; China has cornered the world market by undercutting prices but we could mine them here just as well (it would cost a little more, mostly due to higher labor costs here, but you would save on transportation). Lecture mode off now :-)

I'm actually highly concerned as of late about my grandmother. She's 81 and I see the signs of dementia or Alzheimer's. But she won't let us do anything about it.
oh, that's tough when the problems are mental - so hard to convince them that they need help!
fortunately my dad's issue are physical (well, that and the fact that his wife has left him); mentally he is as sharp as ever.
I just feel awful about it as a few months before it came on, she asked if she could go ahead and move to assisted living. We all told her she was crazy. At the time she was the youngest 80 year old we'd ever seen. haha. But I think she foresaw the issue and was trying to preempt everything. But we convinced her not to.
tough call, ballet - but sometimes they do know best, even if we don't.
It's so great when they keep their mental faculties. I think if I could only choose one, I'd prefer to keep my mental health when I grow old.

He's into condensed matter. Would like to do some particle physics on the side but he doesn't think you can do enough with it.

He is doing swimmingly. I'm so proud of him. Though part of me thinks it might be a swift kick to his over-inflated ego if he had trouble getting in some of those schools! lol
My own field was experimental particle physics, although I am no longer actively involved in research at all; our particle physics groups are still quite busy, though.
But the bulk of our faculty are doing condensed matter physics as well. Lots of exciting new work there!

My dissertation was on neutrinos (looking at the neutrinos coming from muon decay); more recently I have done experiments at Fermilab, the ill-fated SSC, and CERN.

Yeah, it's all greek to me! But I appreciate the depth of knowledge and intellect it takes to explore these realms and the wonderful benefit they give the world as well.
I was part of the ATLAS experiment at CERN; it is finally taking data now although when I was there we were doing design and simulation work.
I was doing calculations of low-energy neutron backgrounds; the equipment had to be designed to take data (efficiently) in a very difficult environment.
I just mentioned you to my boyfriend, uu. He is very impressed with your work at CERN!

The super collider was a great project; we all worked very hard on it, but I think it was doomed as soon as they made a site selection (before that everybody wanted it, but once it was in a particular place everybody else was jealous).
godt, during high-energy proton collisions we are interested in studying rare events (they are the most interesting).
Is that why it was doomed?
But most of the time any collisions that take place produce thousands of low-energy, not very interesting particles
Were you looking at quarks?
That's too funny about the selecting a site for the super-collider.
(not interesting because we've already studied them - nothing new to learn). In particular, they produce seas of neutrons that cause a lot of noise in the detectors, so we had to design some pretty fancy shielding to get rid of them.
Can't look at quarks directly, as they only occur in bound states (proton-like things called baryons or short-lived things called mesons) but we were certainly studying their properties.
godt, I think that is indeed why it was doomed; it lost its political base. too bad for US science, IMHO.

No, we just see trails of particles that are made of quarks, not even the individual ones. Beer bubbles are much more real :-)

no, you can't. You can measure the momentum of charged particles, and use conservation of energy and momentum to reconstruct where they came from but it's all indirect.

yes. Big new due to wind is that the Nat'l Xmas Tree snapped at the base. This was the 3rd tree since they first planted one in 1978. A new one will be planted in the spring.

Right now I am counting the days until I am done with student teaching. June 3. That is... assuming I get my assignment soon! They are having a hard time finding teachers to help us, considering there are really HIGH STAKES tests that happen 2/3 of the way through our student teaching.

I am on our Homeowners' Board of Directors, and we're supposed to be overseeing the maintenance and operation of the property. two of the sitting directors were charged with violations and our election is coming up next Mon 28th. They put out a flyer which tried to bad mouth me but it backfired..so now they've put out a new one omitting their stupidity, but still trying to ride on my coattails...I didn't givethem permission to do so when they asked...so do I breate them publicly or just go behind their backs as they've tried with me and work to get them off the board?

well, I actually didn't want a single family home when I was buying..I liked living in the dorms as an undergrad, and I hated living in apts not knowing who my neighbor was or growing attached to people who moved away...
I say host a potluck and then NICELY say your piece during mingling..LOL
Basically, PAV I think I would ignore the flyers -- the directors have been shown to be less than honorable by their actions. Keep copies of the flyers though in case you need them in the future... establish yourself as a person of integrity, and let the others hang themselves.
too bad you have such poor participation among the members, though PAV. Hard to maintain a set of condos when some of the owners don't help pay for the upkeep.
that's what I did with the first flyer, but since they asked BEFORE posting the second...I don't want those who are impressionable to think I'm condoning their views...
