crap, my last word

haven't got there yet, pugs
It's an expression for a group where the last survivor gets the assets of the group. The movie The Wrong Box was based on that idea.
sorry don't know the reference
its a brand of bed pillows here in Oz
nor that one...
Too bad--ot's hilarious; Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Ralph Richardson, Peter Sellers and more were in it.
ty jan -- I remembered a book (?) by that name

hello sprite!
hi jilli and rubyfoo. Welcome to sun dog day :)
our pix are very similar, sprite! (Writeups too)
how many words?
are those UFO's or planes approaching?
130
yes I noticed. Wiki is a friend :)
read about them, ruby
thanks
neither, rubyfoo, they are an atmospheric phenomenon.
I'll look it up when I take a break and start my day
ruby, we've both got writeups in our profiles
They are sundogs...
phantom: toilet
*brings out the Tena for today*
Tena?
yep. European brand name for bandages for ladies who cannot hold their pee.
(like me)
hahah
and there's a feminine brand named Ruby in France
only when I sneeze!
argh. The names they come up with.
and argh, why do I nearly miss seeing our first Dane's name all the time?
reminds me of that brilliant letter some lady wrote to Allways... about their campaign quote "Have a happy period".
too close to the heart?
first Dane? little pig?
How silly.
you are making that up! lol
no. ruby! ti5
no I swear.
and I thought Fr TV was bad.....
31 left and bedtime -- have a happy day, and ...*poof*
{{jilli}}
bye jilli, sleep well
I looked up your profiles. I've seen sun halos, but never those
I always thought it was ice crystals
I would have called NASA!
rubyfoo, it is the honest truth, the bandages brand Allways advertises with 'Have a happy period". Let me check, I think I can find the letter that lady wrote.
it is ice crystals in the clouds.
I think that is awful, not something ever discussed when I was young -- back in the Bronze Age!
well I think it is a good thing it can be talked about without shame nowaways. But that ad is awful. I will sent you the letter, it will make you laugh :)
no, of course you're right, but still.....
but we sort of used "coded" words
yeah we did still in my days. And I think girls still do too. But the difference, I think, is between taboo and private. It is ok to keep it private, but there is no need to be ashamed anymore.
agreed!
no need to discuss publicly (with husbands, etc.)
no unless it is pertinent to do so, lol.
email sent, btw
haha
ooh, just found the bo mushroom!
thanks :)
http://wendi-aarons.blogspot.com/2007/ 03/as-seen-on-mcsweeneysnet.html
there was one in that genus which the local Polish ladkes called popinki, which turned inky blue the moment it was sliced (from bright yellow interior)
{{lynxx}}
Thanks Sprite - too funny - just came on and saw your chat and had to find it
that was ladies, not potato pancakes.....
hi Ruby and Sprite and all
oh wow, magical cooking. Like magic be4s. Children love that kind of thing. Hi lyn :) xxx. Yes that is the one, I sent rubyfoo a copy.
they had pores rather than gills, lovely things
lol yes that lady is so heartfelt angry, I love it.
I submit roilet... where you gotta go when your stomach feels queasy.
that letter is a riot! And she's from Austin
or a small disturbance
as we say in Dutch: that letter must have come from out of her toes :)
that's a funny expression -- very nice
84 painless words but I had better get dressed!
se you later!
I'm sending that letter to all my PMS friends!
well done! I am not dressed yet either and I just told my love I wouldn't go to the stores today, in spite of the fact I promised to yesterday. I am proud of me for learning to do that!
lol they are bound to love it.
fireflies. Fairly painless grid.
Hi
hello again. Great duck lunch!
OMG, it is hours later!
morning, all!
Good morning uusue!
Good morning everyone!
hi, car. ! Quiet this morning!
That's OK! I am still half a sleep!
How are you? How is dad?
Dad is doing great; I talked to him last night. I am doing ok, still trying to catch up with work that piled up while I was gone, and struggling with headaches :-(
I will be heading down around lunch time to see mine. I think he will be moved to the rehab wing today.
oh, what happened? Did I miss something??
He fell and broke his hip on Saturday morning. He had a titanium plate put in on Sunday.
Sorry, I just figured Trif had spread the word for prayers.
oh no, car.! I'm sure she did, but I'm not on all the time and must have missed it. Good luck to him! Hips can be tricky; my dad was lucky not to have injured his.
At this point I feel bad for the nurses and staff! He is a retired surgeon and one hell of a difficult patient!
We joke and tell them to feel free to knock him out if they need too!
lol, car! Doctors can make the worst patients!
Do you have the stats for the upper corner A? I can't make anything out of it!
ad6.21 & ad8.45. Hello to you both, quietly working away here
no, haven't found anything there yet (keep finding affable, but it's a phantom)
hi, lynxxx!

Car. sorry to read about your dad
Got it! TY!
TY all for your well wishes for Dad! {{hugs}}
More well-wishes from this corner and good morning.
Hi Kaplan!
hi there Kap
And TY!
My son has a titanium pin in his hip. He says it makes life interesting at the airport. : P
(wave)
Cool, Mussolini is in the grid.
I am most concerned about his frame of mind right now. He had been working with physiotherapy and moving around a lot more and was really in a great place mentally regarding his health. He is VERY upset and discouraged about this turn.
Isn't someone on this board a geriatric psychologist?
do you mean a geriatric psychologist, or a psycholigist for geriatrics?
Slight difference.
Hi Kap
so he's taken a recent turn for the worse, car?
No, I meant geriatric psychologist. Like adolescent psychologist.
Not a turn. And he is much better now that he has had the surgery. We just need to keep him positive and moving in the right direction.
I don't think adolescents are allowed to be psycholigists.
ah, good. Attitude is key - that's what's pulled my dad through.
Well, both are proper terminology.
I have to say, uusue, I will be pulling a lot from your experience with your dad! who knew!!!
kje is a Geriatrician, a medical doctor that specializes in geriatrics.
le4, le6 - appropos for this season
I think we all get the blues when something major like that happens to you, perhaps he will have his 'sulk' and get on with it in a few days
If only parents could live long and be healthy...
The rehab center was pretty depressing for my dad, but he used that as motivation to work hard and get out - didn't want to be in that place full of really sick old people :-)
Rehab centers are awful. More like nursing homes- it's just a place they throw people into because they are kicked out of the hospital when the insurance says so
In my experience, anyway.
yeah, my stepmother is in one now :-(
This is a wing of the hospital that he is at. He has been there before and the staff is excellent and he had a really great result...so I am hopeful!
something to look forward to - thanks Kap
I agree about rehab centers. Someone could make a lot of money opening up rehab centers for the "not so old".
we'll be thinking of him, car!
well, my dad is 90, molly, so not exactly young, but he wasn't as sick as a lot of the people there.
OK...my back has taken all it can of sitting in this chair and typing for the moment. I need to take a break. See you all in a bit!
and I need to shower and dress and get on with my day - back when breakfast is ready!
bye for now, sue and car
Bye!
hi all, help with corner a pls

glad you're ok -- gotta run pick up donated food -- BBL :-) *poof*
I was concerned about her. Ziggy took to the basement and sat on top of the freezer so I figured your little pup must be beside herself
take care Une, bye for now
I think there should be a country enable. People around here have teef, not teeth
crossy loves a good thunder storm, puts me right to sleep..but then again up here a large tornado is rare, last big one we had was 1980
Teef in some cities too.

Tres bien Mark, et vous?
Bien.
Easy grid today!
thats the extent of my French lol
So far.
hello Mark
Hello River!
i was force fed french in school as a child and have spent the last 30 years trying to forget all of it;(
Sorry crossy. It is a beautiful language though.
only now do i realize that if i had honed my french i could of gotten one of those cushy govt jobs that call for both official languages:(
ce la vis
Spelled incorrectly, but good!
and i am sure it is spelt wrong lol
C'est la vie!
that would be it
Good Morning Everybody
Hey Nef1

Good Morning Nef
Oh, crossy; *sigh*

ty
fench i believe a group held together by a bond or pact
Morning Mark, River, and crossy. Crossy, I'll bet you've had a chance to get your face slapped without even opening your mouth! ;-)
of course nef
True dat, Nef!@
God, stupid keyboard.
Got to go. *poof*
hagd, Mark
yas i was correct for a change to7= a group who shares a common payoff, with only the last one alive to collect
I'm impressed, crossy. I didn't know that
morning again, all, having my breakfast tea
Morning uusue. How's everything going these days?
word posting has a little delay in it...
as does chat. Anyway, nbt! and nbs!
Oh, good! I thought it was me being pokey this AM
YAY, uusue! Whata great start
to 7 thanks crossie
hi, nef! Talked to my dad last night, he is doing great. I am ok, still trying to catch up with backlog of grading.
glad to know he's doing well, uusue! I'll bet that's a relief for you!
it is indeed, although I wish I could visit again soon - unless I fly out for a weekend it will be mid-May at the earliest.
clue for an 6/18
can your siblings visit him in between too?
don't have any, nef (not surviving, that is), and my sister's kids are not really in touch with him any more.
sorry, matches, I don't have it yet
I've tried to encourage them to contact him, but they have their own lives (and my niece just had her third baby, so she's pretty busy!)
that's tough, uusue. So are you looking for cheap weekend flights and visits?
I will be come May; even then I can't really drive unless I bring the rest of the family (partner, son, and dog), as we only have one car.
would he come visit you?
not finding the an6/18, either :-)
Nef, he's talked about it but it's almost 1000 miles, I don't think he's up to driving that far yet. And I don't think he wants to fly.
train?
an6 to apply oil
thanks, jess! how did I miss that??
yw
ty jes
train might be a possibility, nef, although getting to the station on his end would be tricky.
thanks, jess.
yw crossy
so Enable doesn't know about Japanese lunch boxes?
ow
nope. Tried that in a recent grid
You hurting, hurshy?
yes
my neck decided to go wrong for no discernible reason this morning
oh, dear! I've had tons of neck trouble - you have my sympathy!!
thanks
finally NBt!
hurshy, did you sleep wrong? I love my reheatable and freezeable packs for muscle spasms
yay, nef!
morning all
NBS too (didn't realize it til now
anyone have stats for the a in the upper left corner please
hi cw
morning, cwest!
morning uusue
ad6/21 and ad8/45
and nef
i don't think so... it didn't hurt when i got up. i did my neck thing that the chiropractor has me do, and it didn't hurt then. i started my yoga, and about five poses in - none of which put strain on the neck - it just spazzed out.
thanks uusue
Ouch! But do try either heat or cold on it (Cold works best for DH, but heat helps me -even though you're supposed to do cold first)
unfortunately i'm now at work and i don't have either.
I have little cold packs that I keep in the office freezer, hurshy - don't know if you have one available but it might be a good idea for the future, if possible
also chiropractors and necks make me very nervous - I've visited them in the past but would not do so again
morning babblers :)
hi, nono!
can you get a cup of ice water and hold it over part of the muscle? (Picturing hurshy in yoga posture holding a cup of cold water in an awkward position. ---Maybe not)
Hurshy, if you have a microwave available you can warm some wet cloths or even paper towels for a warm compress
ok, finally made an appointment to see my doctor about these headaches :-(
good, uusue. Have you been thinking that they are related to stress?
no, unfortunately I am thinking they are related to my neck :=(
speaking of which; I should schedule some appts. for me too. I get so wrapped up in taking care of others I forget about me!
HI everyone. UConn rules!
oh, yes, nef, you do need to take care of yourself too!!
hi bichon
Indeed, bichon! (not that I really follow these things...)
I don't followthem either but for a small state, we do have good college bball
Apro is not a word? What about the hairdo?
*Afro
Indeed, bichon :-)
i know bichon, I tried it as well!
Afro is a proper noun
I went to graduate school in Connecticut (although not UConn)
Yale?
Indeed.
(dusts off diploma)
impressive!
I don't think there are any other grad schools for Physics in CT. Wesleyan does have grad degrees n science, but I'm not sure about Physics
M.Phil. and Ph.D. in physics (it's kind of been downhill from there...)
It's enough.
I had a physical therapist who had a degree from Quinnipiac (which I am sure I am misspelling) but again not physics
There are grad programs at the State Universities and UConn has a Med and Law school. Qinippiac is starting a med school [hard to believe]
well, if they already have graduate programs in physical therapy - but it's still a big leap. NIU is talking about a medical school at some point in the far future as well but right now there isn't any money for anything :-(
I'm wondering how good of a med school Quinnipiac could make. They do have a law school
CT is such a small state for so many grad programs! How do they do it?
well, if they can put together a good faculty (and schools tend to graduate more qualified people than they can employ...)
well, nef, the population isn't all that small, and it's right next to New York.
I don't think the grad schools at the state universities are that great. One has a Library Science school. CT may be small but it does have some very wealthy areas.
And New Jersey (also not far) helps by not really having a state university system similar to those of most other states...
And how CT built a bball empire, I don't know
Ah! So it pulls students from the surrounding states! Do they have reciprocity for lower tuition too?
Not that I know of, although it has been a VERY long time since I was a student :-)
No. and UConn [the main campus] is becoming very competitive to get into.
but NJ was kind of infamous for sending all its students to other states to get educated.
Is it better now?
dunno, bichon, but I don't think it is significantly better.
Well, my morning coffee is done and it'st ime to get busy around here. My sister is visiting in 3 weeks (for 2 days, as she stops here on her way to visit a friend in LA); so I'm trying to get things organized around here so I don't have that last minute dash of cleaning and shuffling stuff around.
Happy Babbling All! BBL! Not quite half way yet; but am hoping to finish today
bye, nef!
hi, I'm coming back to this awful last (second) ne 4/4 does anyone have a clue for me

Hi everyone. sorry for the "tont." My cursor has a mind its own!!
Are you going to the beach today, Annie?

Hi PC, welcome to babbleland
howdy jonesy
done.
yaa for annie!!
whoo hooo annie!
Congrats, Annie
BR, just saw your post...no beach today but might take a walk on the boardwalk
are you vacationing annie?
oh heck, it just started to rain
I have never walked on a boardwalk or under one down by the sea
jmc, No, I am on a permanent vacation. I live near the ocean
oh I had a notion you were north
BR, Come to Brooklyn and we will take a walk on the Coney Island boardwalk and stop for frankfurters at Nathans
hard to keep track of where everyone is
Wish I could
you are north! lol
Las Vegas here!!
I'll be right there Annie. My old haunt
yes, jmc....LOL
feat
Coney Island is a fun place i understand
bichon, Bobby and I went to Nathans Sunday...had franks, french fries and a coke. Still the best
tsk pcj pb for you! lol
my southern snobbery never remembers there is a beach north of delaware
maybe there are nathans hotdogs in the pb for pcj
jmc, are you an Outer Banks girl?
*puts franks in the PB for jonesy*
no i am more southern than that growing up in Houston--my beach was Galveston Island
you can walk out literally a mile or more on the continental shelf in the Gulf of Mexico
jmc, Oh that must be fabulous
of course even then you never wore a white bathing suit in the Gulf---tar stains
not too good for surfing annie!
okay 1/2 way for me
pcj did you scare yourself out of the chog?
After what is going on in Japan, likely will be more tar in the Gulf
I must be on my way...bye dear babblers
the ship fuel caused the tar mainly
bye annie
i am off too for a while
that is why i love babble, you get a word in the grid like to7/28,then you get a reference to it in a movie from 1966 called the wrong box, which leads you to the original book written by robert louis stevenson written in 1898 which i have now ordered in hardcover from biblio.com:)))
Afternoon all
good afternoon
howdy bob,teach
crossy checks for baD breath....
Hello crossy, teach and Mr. Bob. Just starting and have 130 words left. We have a spring=like day in the NW with clouds, sun breaks, and cold 40 degrees outside. Inside is cozy and pleasant.
right at the freezing mark here and partly sunny;)
so nice light jacket weather;)
Ah, crossy spring is so variable.
spring-like here in that it is constantly changing - yesterday was in the high 70s, today is in the low 40s - started with some snow flakes mixed with rain this morning - now just cloudy
Light, meaning goose down, jacket, I suppose.
I love these real-time weather reports, teach.
lol,light meaning sweater and windbreaker
makes you appreciate (or not) what you have (or don't have)
snow is back tomorrow i see;((
We have had lots of gray skies and flooding rivers. Many landslides across the raillines going from Vancouver, BC through Washington state. I would think after so many years the hillsides would have stabilized near the tracks.
129 words left and still inventing good words.

hi stid, just passing thru to glance for a few more words
hi, all! lunch time here...
have I mentioned that I am very bad at finding words that start with vowels?
just more than halfway - NBT and NBS - time to take a short break
Snack time here. I got some malted easter egg shaped candies. Way too handy. They need to be on the top shelf, padlocked.
bye, wv!
I'd be more tempted if they were pure chocolate, gmere...
...of course, I ate most of a large bag of Japanese rice crackers yesterday, so who am I to talk? :-)
clue for the 8 plz?

Rice crackers are wonderful, too.
I especially like the spicy ones, but the seaweed ones are nice too :-)

I like the ones with seeds.
rice crackers, not countries. No countries in this grid but legumes.
those malted milk candies sound mighty good! I couldn't eat my dinner....
just a generic country, which is the grid...
we had a big discussion of your icon this AM, sue, was that today's theme. If the theme ever gets around to chows, I'll be in step!
39 words left and I can only see phantoms
can not see the country...so frustrated
yes, it is supposed to be today's theme. And here I missed the discussion!!
just the general word for country with ad in front, syb
blankety blank ty
Why couldn't you eat dinner, rubyfoo?
I think it was sprite and lynxx....
just vegetables and looking at them made me feel sick....too much lunch, maybe
Ah, sometimes one is just not ready for the meal. Speaking of which, I need to fix the lunch for Murphy (our new puppy who is 5 months old.) He is a very loving little guy and food is his hobby.
what kind of puppy?
hello Mother, hey all. taking a short break.
hi, stid!
Hi mama. He is a labrador retriever and is my picture icon.
hello stidmama; I need your mother to fix food for me while she's cooking for Murphy!!!
Are you dog-sitting today as planned, mama.
I have some nice broth and could fix you a sandwich to go with it, ruby.
yes Mother, have put the interloper on the run outside for a while to give the resident a chance to relax
perfect! I'll be right over
actually broth sounds like a good idea
Relaxing is our middle name. I shall wake Murphy so he is ready to have lunch with ruby. They will enjoy each other's company.
probably about time to let him in again though... I'll take my shower first. *sigh* totally distracted this morning. Not sure which end is up and have a meeting at the college in a couple hours with my supervisor
Murphy and I are minding the fort whilst Dad is looking at boats in Seattle. That is his hobby.
maybe he'll surprise you with a sailboat
again? he went Saturday, didn't he?
I don't think so ruby. He told me recently what he really likes is researching boats and looking. It is funny because he looks at fairly small boats, in need of repair, yet he does not want to do the repair work anymore. Yes, the Saturday boat had major engine mount problems and lack of winterizing probably meant a cracked block.
oh well, at least it keeps him busy.
we had a sailboat in Miami which we both truly miss
it was a Herreshoff
there we go NBT and halfway at the same time. must be a sign... *sigh*
It is also a lot cheaper than a boat which is just a money pit. Ruby, we have not sailed since stidmama was a very young girl. I hate to put it this way, but it was a long time ago.
A Herreshoff, oh my. That must have been a beauty!
she was a Neria, 36 ft
ketch
Must go fix the doggy meal. I'll tell my husband about your Neria, 36 foot ketch. Thanks ruby.
love to murph and the would-be sailor

I'm back, Ruby, Murphy finished lunch. I do fix some pretty good food for him. He is polite and always waits for permission to eat. I tell him "Bone apetite."
dogs don't fool around when it comes to food, do they?
Très drôle Gran Mere : D
Merci, MollyL. Not often do I get to do bad puns in French. And as for apetite, les chiens sont les plus meier. Spelling is wrong.
After two fairly simple grids, I'm guessing tomorrow's will be 300+
Gonna step out and get lunch. Laters, gators.

reading back on boats:) i have had many, from row boats with up to 32 foot starcrafts with full head and omc inboard motors and they all have one thing in common.they are money pits.so you can 2 things, buy a boat,or give someone your hate $5000.00 ever 2 years..works out to about the same:)
make that someone you want to hate....
do not worry, after swapping out a piston, chaging a rubber gasket for the outboard part andpulling the engine to change all the plugs, you will hate them,i promise

2 eaglets have hatched and there is a third egg waiting...
the ddt everyone was spraying around in the 60,s and 70,got into their food supply and caused weak egg shells and it has been long to recover
These eaglets are only 2 and 3 days old...

So frustrated! Missing lots of 1 mores from several letters!
I hate having headaches. : ( I am sorry for you uusue.

Don't laugh! I use them!
noswaith dda - evening all
Good evening!
thinking this grid may be deceptively tricky
I think it moved right along. I have 21 to go and am a bit stuck.
But overall a workable, fun grid!
*Makes note to send Sue a dozen lidded mugs* : D
Are there any compound words that begin with Oi...the black liquid?
Nope
OK. I need help with that left hand O then. I have OL 4/4 and or 4/4.
Extend the 4/4
ol 5/10
And add not out to the beginning three for a 5
Are those clues all for the same word? I did fine 1 ol 5/10
um, i think mine and molly's most recent clue are the same
hey i just came home... went to an ethiopian restaurant and the bread (injera) is made of te4/10!!

thx, molly!
Dinner is ready. I will be back later! Have a great night all!
you too car
spanish cheer? o3?
i had something similar dorens to7/28 in here to day, reminded that a similar plot was in a movie in 1966 called 'the wronbg box" so i found that robert louis stevenson wrote it in the late 1800,s no i just ordered a hardcover of it from biblio.com:) god bless babble;)

Hi
Hi Lyn
hi lyn and everyone
the grid was very quiet
Hi west
hi glant
cool, somewhere along the line i went over 75% and did not notice:)
gj crossy
i have 42 left
crossy we play word games so there would be no math
and 5/4 paople agree with you:))))
good point GE lol
people
or is that 5/4 people have problems with fractions?
d) all of the above
he5/12?
he & most of the King of the Jungle
ty lyn
crossy has a oven full of honey/garlic ribs cookin:) and a big pot of corn on the cob
tarzan?
Glant - I worry about you
oh, can i come for tea please crossy
george?
that sounds like summer crossy..we will have one this year, won't we?
why Lyn?
oh we love crossy
of course glant,i shall set a plate out for you
oh, wonderful crossy
crossy this morning I made scrambled eggs, bacon and crunchy English muffins..I thought of you !
finlly got your clue Lyn -ty
mmm...breakfast food;)
crunchy english muffins -how does that work LOL
errr i hate when my fingers don't listen to my brain
you toast them:)
I put them in the toaster twice
toasted muffins - not cakes
I like English muffins and tast them but never thought of them as crunchy LOL
ours have nooks and crannies lol
i think you may be thinking of a different muffin glant lol
*toast
surely not crossy
I have a feeling the 'English' muffins we have here haven't been heard of across the pond
lol
i think you may be correct westford
crumpets..sort of glant
is thi s english muffin you eat a kind of bready round thing witn something like semolina grains occasionally adhering to the outside?
yes Glant
that would be it
yes glant
which you split and toast then butter?
by george she's got it
Yes - toasted until crunchy
oh, crumpets are things cooked in rings which have lots of holes in them and which ae kind of non-porous
yaa for glant!!
my mother always did them on the griddle..buttered first and pressed down with a wrought iron frying pan
he, I only live in the land where crumpets and english muffins were invented ;-)
It wasn't until I got married that I found out they could be toasted
lol
do they have French fries in France?
i toast crumpets and engish muffins LOL
yes they have french fries in france
that's good to know lol
and they serve them with mayonnaise
how funny
yuck
yummy and not at all like McD
we put vinegar on ours
lyn doesn't like mayo?
we put vinegar on ours chips - which are very thick french fries not thin slivers of de fried potatoes which we call crisps
like mayo - not with chips - don't like the vinegar or tomato sauce either
and we put salt (oh the h&S implications) on our chips as well!
your crisps are our chips
crossy?
yes i know
i am back
how are you making the ribs?
and we have pancakes - which are like french crepes rather than US pancakes so vry thin
ooh crepes
did those come over with the Normans?
i boil them for 2 hours, then marinate them for 2 hours with a bbq, honey garlic mixture
oh my bet they fall off the bone
then bbq or bake them for 15 min
they are delish
what oven temp?
350 for 15-20 min
and we serve pancakes with sugar sprinkled over and lemon juice (or vinegar if you can't afford lemons)
do you use baby back ribs?
who knows if they came over with the Normans LOL
that does sound good glan do you ever use maple syrup?
cross - i need the recipe LOl as nobody here makes ribs properly
maple syrup is incredibly expensiv here - think $10 for a quarter pint - and people tend not to use it ias it's hard to find - we almost always use lemon juice and sugar n our pancakes
it's pretty plentiful around here but the price keeps going up and up
an6 pls
an6 pls
an6 pls
we use lemon juice/sugar too Glant, sometimes golden syrup (maple syrup is a recent arrival) - jam used to be a favorite too
and the containers keep getting smaller and smaller

what is this nicknam for hawthorne? not sure it applies outside US
west that is a clue for the ad6 which I have
yes peri I don't have a list yet thought that was the only one
glan I meant the author not the plant
I need the AN6 pls
I need the AN6 pls
aaah
an**** with oil
baby back beef ribs,or pork ribs
peri - you are seeing double lOL
okay the priest does this at baptism
I never never see that word, thanks for asking Peri
I hardly ever do either lyn
i always thought it was a double n
glant, for a good ribs sauce start with ketchup, tomato paste, some honey dash of mustard and spice to taste
i think i need to find decent ribs to add that all to
lol, glant, was born there as you know, and i still prefer lemon/sugar on my pancakes
so do i - love the sharp/sweet combo
i find real syrup too sweet
maybe some nice preserves on them are nice as well
vinegar/sugar works much better than you think it will unil you try it
only vinegar i eat is the malt vinegar for chips
that's what works surprisingly well
that custom came down to New England from Canada rest of the country puts catsup on their fries
wow, 9 words left and I find the volcano
as does cheese with fruit cake - do you have fruit cake there?
yes we do and I love it
ty Lyn
sharp wensleydale cheese with cake and a tumbler of whiskey
most don't
crossy does not like ketchup and fries
well a thin slice of strong cheese on topof you dark fruit cake is surprisingly good
ty lyn from me as well
what sort of cheese with fruit cake, a hard sharp one?
ketchup & frie is eugh
it's a midwestern thing.they put it on everything lol
yes a hard sharp one - if you can get wnesleydale that is the best but red leicester or double gloucester are good and cheddar is OK
I haven't seen those first 3 here, but don't go to specialist cheese shops
double glouchester is a 'wet" and sof cheese is it not?
soft*
no double gloucester is a plae orange hard cheese with a mild flavour
all are regional english cheeses
*pale
i grew up with molasses on my hotcakes (pancakes)
just found the greek cheese lol
we don't really have molasses here apart form in specialist health food shops
sounds really good jmc
want a real treat? single malt scotch,a slice of angel food cake and a wedge of quebec maple smoked apple cheddar
Do you have to go across a border to buy a regional cheese?
geek cheese - feta?
hi all
well I think I made this grid harder than it actually was but the company was excellent - Bye everyone
molasses is a common sweetener in the poor south
tc lynxx
bye lynxxx
ahem yes glan
no I can buy regional cheeseslocally but they are nit cheap - supermarket cheddar is the cheapest cheese
my grandpa made sorghum molasses every year with a mule to run the grinder and huge flat vats over fires - best I've ever tasted.
yes glan now step into the PB please lol
*opens pb door*
here corn syryp is for the po folks
Be well, Lyn
karo is only used for pecan pie lol
bye lyn nice to see you
cool rbud!
So, a regional cheese is one named after a region?
lol shoo-fly-pie
I make good pecan pie
oh flippin g hrck - hadn't seem fe - now in PB
I use whatever I want .. the food police can take it up with Miss Manners
rbud did you see him make the molasses or were you just told about it
here everything but the basic cheddar and motz cost the moon and the stars
hi bab if it tastes good it is
Oh, I was there, dad and 5 uncles had to go and help! one year the school went on a field trip to Grandpa's to see how it was done, I was so puffed up and proud.
yes a regionak cheese is namedafter the region it is made in
my aunt told me about making molasses and about making cane syrup in rural Louisiana where she and my mother grew up
how cool to have gotten to see it rbud
heck, I was around 10, had to help stir, lol! :)
but what a good memory
wow rbud and jmc what an amazing memory
makes me want to go to the cupboard and get some molasses
my aunt and i were driving the natchez trace and stop at an old syrup mill and she showed me how it was done (without syrup though)
bet it won't taste the same
Hi again! Back to finish up.
Long ago I worked in a sugar beet processing plant. Beet residue was used to make molasses
Dad's family were serious river bottom hillbillies, haha.
hmmm maybe this is the time to tell my grandmother's favorite joke (its about molasses)
none of what I find today tastes nearly as good.
interesting BR i didn't know you could make it from anything but cane but that figures
i have da4/5 and dy4 what am I missing?

OK everyone! I am off! Have a wonderful night!
That was actually a very fun and fast little grid.
Hello, stid ... are you a master now?
Hi STid! Bye Stid!
Be well, Car
no BR, still a couple months away.
See you all tomorrow.
bye car!
bye gramma!
bye (( car. )) have a good night and you too ((gram))
So, you are a master in waiting
wow stid time just flew by
LOL BR! too true!
How do you like the classroom?
I love being in the teacher's shoes...
and the kids don't seem to mind me much, either. I will do a few weeks' full-time teaching starting the end of this month.
yaa for stidmama:))
yay, stid! (back from grading, I am)
hey sue! avoiding lesson planning, here...
Teachers play such a critical role in the maturation process ... I wish you well.
So I have a list of requirements for extra credit papers - at least two pages and include a list of sources. So one student hands me 5 extra credit papers (he's missed a lot of classes), each less than a page with no sources. Sigh.
we seem to have an abundance of teachers and people with bunches of letters after their name:)
we are all bibliophiles...
there is a pattern here;)
oh dear, sue. seems he missed the point as well as the classes? did the papers hit any of the learning goals you would normally have? Can you give partial extra credit if he provides you with sources?
avoiding grading exams, myself.
I think I may just give them back to him and tell him to try again, stid. What I wanted the students to do was go into a little more depth on one of the "news" articles I show at the beginning of class; he just did a brief summary of each one.
who else likes words so much, crossy, but us egghead types, lol?!
sounds reasonable to me, sue -- freshman, I suppose?
i read once that everything is plagerism and that in reality there are but seven original ideas
probably, stid, I haven't checked.
hey rbud!
that many, crossy?
hiya, stid! :)
yup..think it ties in with the deadly original sins
lust,envy,greed,sloth etc
lol, crossy - I've heard that too but I think it's for plots of fictional works (I don't think it includes physics, that is) :-)
everything else is a rip-off:)
hello all -- 4 to go!
hello jilli we meet again
after newton and gravity and E-mc2,everything else is a let down
hey, I resemble most of those! ;p
guess I'm in trouble...

Be well, west
golly, gee, sue! *stern mama look at kid*
Hello, jilli. Hope you are well and smiling
yeah, no kidding!
I mean, walking will do me good, but still.
yes indeed, babrab -- and you too, I hope.
uusue, you get a cab and make him walk. Maybe then he'll remember to charge the phone and where he parked!
The sun is out, defying a cold wind, and I saw the first rufous humminbird of the season today -- a few weeks late this year.
hi jilli
good for you jill -- I heard a few buzzers the other day but haven't seen any yet
hey nef! ((hugs))
hi nef and stid and uu and all
Actually I see the car - he parked it in the lot outside my office. Nice except SO still had to walk over as I don't have the key.
hey stid ((hugs)) to you too!
Hello Babblers!!!

I thought I would go the irreverent way...
glad you found the car, sue -- hope SO was okay with the extra exercise
hey red!
Hi All! i wil never give up. i will keep entering "afro" until enable recognizes it as a word.

ok, I am home, 25 left but dinner is coming shortly and I think I will join stidmama in the brain rotting in front of the TV. Probably won't finish this one.

I live pretty close :-)

By the way, congratulations to all the finishers! YAY!
Thank you!!! I've tried everything else!
people downstairs started shouting again, but at least windows are closed tonight.
hi, minver and nef
hi dc and Min!
hi all, past halfway here, but still not NBT. still hunting without a net . . .
hey folks!
sounds like a noisy neighborhood, dc
Hello jesdraggon! How are you? Welcome to the puzzle
hi Gwen and jes
i have 15 left and still not nbt gwen :)
I can provide clues if any are needed
i am celebrating, minver, how are you? :)
from the upper A, i have ad6,21. stats for the other one PLZ and TY
has been of late, nef.
evening, jes
ad8,45
hiya, gwen
ad 8
ad8.45
any opinions on Bloc québécois here?
does it grow off the ad6?
sorry to hear that ,dc
What are you celebrating jesdraggon, your fireworks
yes, sort of
yes, ad6/8 like en6/8
never heard of it, dc. yes, gwen.
don't know much about the Bloc québécois but they sound kinda scary sometimes
eh, part of living in an area :)
no, still have 42 words left. celebrating successfully replacing a uterine prolapse, for the first time. i have a horrible history of bad luck with prolapses.
DOH! ty, found the ad8. adding it to my collection now
jes, what's that in english? and are you the patient or the doctor?
i'm the doctor, and that's when the uterus, which really should be an internal organ, decides that it wants to take a tour of the field outside of the cow.
Hooray for U jesdraggon.Glad to hear the good news!
EW!!
I am done! I have fireworks! to7/28 was my last word
wonderful news that, jes
congrats, minver
yay, minver!~
whoo hooo min
well congrats on the sucessful procedure, jes. Do you use pessaries or what?
wtd jes and LOVED the description! lol
I'll be here off&on to give clues while I write my story
yeah. ew is correct, though perhaps a bit of an understatement. now if only the cow will stay alive and nurse her calf, all will be happy!
congrats min and jes!
i'm going with no, nef, because i'm not sure what pessaries are?
okay, did you sew it back in, or what?
also, i am PRETTY sure we're not talking about cows.
it's a matter of positioning the cow with her legs behind her (this particular cow was NOT cooperative for this), then lifting and pushing. And that's WORK. probably weighs 40 pounds.
oh wait we ARE talking about cows?
i'm talking about cows, leslie, what are you talking about?
rofl
bahaha i thought you were talking about people and were just being clever
LOL! I'm wondering what LA is talking about too!
*trying to imagine a cow with legs in front of her*
someone asked doctor or patient, so i assumed people
i was going to say, i hope you don't explain it to the ladies that way
when you get it all back inside , you shove your arm up as far as you can to try and turn the whole thing right-side inside, since it had to turn outside-in to come out.
then sew across the vulva so it can't come back out.
LA, now you know what kind of doctor jes is :)
*imagines woman face when jes explains procedure to her as a patient*
seems like a design flaw, jes LOL
lying on her chest, jam, front legs tucked under, back legs pulled out behind her like she's going over a jump
*tears streaming down face laughing*
"You see, ma'am, your uterus seems to have taken a walk outside the cow."
pulling the legs back tips the pelvis forward so you're not pushing uphill.
hi, jmc
it is a SERIOUS design flaw, the damn thing should be tacked to the body wall on the ends of the horns!
how many people does it take to get a cow in that position?
don't forget LA about shoving in and turning it rightside out again
in this case, it took 4, and we ended up with her head snubbed to the tractor and her hind legs pulled back to a 4-wheeler.
ha! that was AFTER i realized we were talking about cows
ouch!
It happens to women too. I've seen it in elderly women who have had a lot of kids and poor medical care
in less feisty cows, you can do this with 2 people.
hope the cow gets better, seriously, but EW!
a pessary is a device that is placed in the vagina to help hold the uterus in
Wasn't this an episode of All Creatures Great and Small???
ah. no, nef, just cross-hatched over the uterus with umbilical tape.
quite a few episodes, actually
probably, jwr. never watched the show, but it did happen in at least one of his books.
evening all - what on earth have I popped in on! :-)
it was a memorable episode, believe me!
and how long does that stay sewn up?
hi, dan :)
must go calm down bbl
hi dan2
Hello dan2bit!How are you doing? Welcome to the grid
and the topic today is . . . cow stuffing
yes! i only have four left. first ca 6/21?
so i may not be able to move tomorrow. imagine, if you will, crouching down with 40 pounds of uterus balanced on your thighs, pushing as hard as you can around the edges to get things slid back inside with one hand, and trying to pull the edge of the vulva out with the other hand so it doesn't roll in and block... it's a workout!
hi minver nef, dcs, jmc and all!
hi dan, you walked into the tale of my afternoon :)
ca6 - feline + charged particle
the tale of the tail
well, as long as the ties come out before they try to breed her again....
heh. usually a week or so, or until they can catch her again.
ah thanks dan. yes we're talking about COW uteri
need a clue for the ob5 - well I should hope cow given 40lbs!
probable nightmare for tonight: being wheeled into the OR, seeing surgeons with gloves up to their elbows, I request more sedation... I wake up mooing wildly...
LOL!
ob 5/14 - ob + the book of *** (denzel movie)
ob + last 3/4 of where you get lunch meats
(contemplating hiding chat until new topic emerges)
hahah, sorry to inspire nightmares, pastor... i'm just happy to've gotten one back in! mostly, i've had bad luck--they either die before i get there, or rupture the uterus and i have to kill them. :(
tx LA & phandmd
pastor, the real nightmare would be when your insurance company refused to pay.
ol 6/18?
aack - that WOULD be the worst thing!
ol6 = fake butter + rhymes with sliding on the ice wearing metal blades
spanish cheer + pt of eat
bo6/24 the second one?
I have 6 left; all B's
ahh i knew i was typing all around it. fireworks!
just different last letter, dan
sorry gwen, i don't mean to drive you away
YAY, LA!!! WTG!!!
woot!
I've accomplished the fe4/7 of finishing the puzzle so now I will le4/5 a hand with a story for you to sc4/5. It has been a long time since I ate be4/9 since I gave it up for Le4/4.Haven't ea5/10 beef since March 9th Now I'm be 4/6ing myself over my decision to give up eating red meat. I fe4/7 like it was a huge mistake. I wish I could be4/7 the rules&eat it once a week. But if I be 4/6 the rules, it defe/7s the purpose of giving something up for Le4/4. I just love red meat and eat it too much. I've become less le 4/4 with all the meat I eat.I like it cooked anyway whether it be bo4/6ed, br5/14ed, or grilled. I like it even more than ca6/18, which is what I gave up last year.I ca4/5 believe it is another 2 weeks until my no red meat rule en 4/5. It was so da 5/28 of me to give up eating red meat. Will never do it again!I know one thing's for sure,as soon as Le 4/4 is over, the first thing I in6/21 to do is eat a HUGE Porterhouse steak! Now that I have le5/10 a hand with my story of clues,I am going to go ne 6/18 up the kitchen. Then I'm going to jump in4/4 bed and watch the news to see what's going on in the na6/18 I te 4/5 to fall asleep though watching TV this late at ni 4/4. I hope you have made no 4/4 of my clues and they helped you out a te5/14 bit.Goodnight babblers.
ah duh tx LA and all cluers - firewords
Congratulations LeslieAnn on fireworks! Good for you
yay dan!
YAY, Min and dan2!!! WTG!!!!
yay leslie, min, and dan!
no problem, it's reality tv without the crappy editing, jes LOL
WTG leslie and dan and all !!! ~~~~ !!!!!
Min, you are a talented cluer!! :)
heheh. that's right. consider it an episode of "dirtiest jobs"
Thanks snags! I hope that story helped you out some.
Speaking of dirtiest jobs, won't someone think of the poor bachelors and come clean my kitchen?
It did and I thank you!!
thanks, Min! I finally got fireworks!

Niters Min and phan
anyone need any clues?
46 of them in no particular order, Nef ..
what letters or number counts, tor?
Too many to ask right now Nef, but thanks ..
one thing I noticed is don't forget about the Y and the S in the top row. there are a number of plurals and words ending in Y
as a matter of fact; half of my last 6 B words ended in one or the other
Got a few of those Nef .. thanks ..
how about the top-left a?
hello all!
or perhaps just nef and tor.... :P
hi ballet. That top left a is ad +a guys' name and ad +another name for a country
SLOW posting here right now!
thanks, nef! I'll work on that. So far, before your clue, I've tried afro eight trillion times and an italian word about four times.
ad 6/21 and ad 8/45, to be exact
got em!
and that's nbt!! :)
44 words to go. Maybe I'll finish tonight...
Woo,Hoo! ballet! I'm watching TV and bored, so can clue
well I'm not sure what to ask for, since I'm attempting to not use the list.
what letters are you low on words for? I can clue the letter and number of letters if you'd like
you're so kind, nef! Um.. I'd say the L is hurting for a few more, as well as both T's.
I have one of the two Is, the one that begins il, hint for the other?
Snitkin, the 2nd Il is just a 1 letter extension of the other word
thanks, Nef, got it
le= 4,5,5,4,5,5,4,4,5,4,6,5
lo4
thanks, nef!! *grin*
Missing one fe5 (I have the plural of the "bumper")
le6?
ta 4; te 4,4,5,4,4,5,4,5
there is only on fe 5
le6 is a spring time Christianholy period
oh man....... I should have gotten that one! lol
Hi WinterRiver

All done WinterRiver
hi fuzzy and Winter
Hi Nef
Show off, Fuzzy. Over an hour and a half this evening of chorus, middle and high school.
Hi Nef.
le 5 after "having previously rested an object against a vertical surface"
hi fuzzy and winter!
I meant to add a question mark there......
le + a boys' name
gracias
L's abolished!
exciting news out of colorado springs!!!
what's up, cos?
pray tell, cos
what, cos?
Thanks, Nef.
the LGBT ally pro-choice candidate who refused to rule out a tax increase won first place in the mayoral election!
yw, Winter
first two te 5?
it goes to a run off though but he has more money than God so he has a good chance and its possible the springs will have a sane Mayor who wants domestic partnerships legal
Wow, cos!
that bodes well all-around, cos, at last for length of term :)
oops, got the first
second te5?
and 3 out of 5 democrats won the at large city council seats.. without a run off.
so, as of tomorrow, i'll be carrying a Droid and an iPhone.
lol dc. you need both?
first te 5 is very small; 2nd te 5 is te + ***n chop (meat)
so dems picked up two seats. which is amazing news for el paso county
i got iPhone as business requirement. I'm getting droid because i can, and it's what my carrier offers.
Whats your job, dc?
anyway be back at flip.. going back to bite my nails over the WI elections
I like my droid. But don't ever lose it. The refurbished crap they gave me after mine got stolen.... it doesn't something bizarre and frustrating once every other day.
it's a start-up that's not off the ground yet, Nef. Targeting tourists with mobile devices in cooperation with local sites
noted, ballet
does*
that sounds exciting dc! what is your position within the startup?
this is a low-end one that was free from my carrier, if highly rated in its class. we'll see.
I'm COO, and working to get the CEO to accept that he knows jack about marketing.
that part doesn't sound so fun, dc
haha yeah
it isn't, but alas, some ick always comes with most anything
true. I hope it's just "some" ick and not lots of ick!
:) same here. We went to HS together, and server on the Alumni Association board together, so here's hoping it goes well.
finally crushed the T's!!
so at least you have some history and can probably predict some areas you can improve on
quite so. we both also regularly attend the same board-gaming group
er, I mean help him improve on
which is actually how we met.
board-gaming? as in scrabble, etc?
well, we all have ways we can improve, as do most all relationships :)
yes, though we play more German ones on the whole.
So what are German board games?
well I busted 100 words and have less than 30 left, the Boy is asking to go to bed. So I think it's time for me to take my leave...
Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Power Grid are three we play a lot of.
Thanks for the help!! goodnight everyone!
be well, ballet
you too, dc!
Niters, Ballet!
*poof*
hmph. ENABLE won't take natto
I think I've heard of Power Grid before, but not the other 2.
Enable doesn't enable anyone.
Hey, how is Tom doing?
true that, nef
he's been certified for heart transplant in Richmond. Is debating going through the certification process again here in Washington, which i think may actually mean Baltimore.
but, he's well, aside from that :)
I'm keeping him in my prayers, seain
he FINALLY had a doctor write him a handicapped parking tag w/out him asking, which is wonderful. He's needed and deserved that for a long time.
thank you, Nef
you are kidding! It's taken this long?
it's only 13 years since the heart problem was diagnosed, and 18 months after the myectomy failed
(i agree, that was mostly sarcasm)
that's really awful.
he has an excellent rheumatologist who is very holistic in her approach. He started seeing her in November.
She's the one that certified him for the DMV
I hope that it will open up his world a bit.
he's one of 3 people i know to have quit the cardiology practice he was getting primary cardiac care from.
it will ease it for sure :)
Did he feel they were incompetent?
well, they felt the myectomy was not suggested, despite symptomatology and documentation.
and they were not convinced he was candidate for transplant.
oh, MAN!
that does sound on the border of competant
competent
they missed active a-fib during a stress test in another person i know. He pointed it out to them once he saw the results confirmed what he was feeling.
so, yeah, not so great. Happily, we have plenty to choose from around here, plus Washington Hospital Center and Washington Adventist Hospital, both wonderful cardiac facilities
why wouldn't he be a candidate for transplant? his age is right; his poor heart, etc. Don't tell me it was bias?!
i don't know. Some was he's "so young". He kept pointing out that that's a plus when it comes to transplant.
We transplanted patients as young as 10!
yep. really, younger will get much more use out of organ than 80+ year old with other problems, not to be agist.
yeah.
we have had advantage of knowing someone who's had a heart transplant. he and his wife have been wonderfully supportive and full of information.
that's great. It really helps patients see that there is life (and a great life!) after transplant
yes, and we met Chuck one year after surgery, and have seen the change in him in the 5 years since. Very inspiring.
that's even better -to see the improvement over time
i can imagine :)
we'd had a 16 year old boy who'd been on an artificial heart for a long time before he got his heart. He came back 10 years after with his fiance to have her see what he'd been through. We loved that visit!
:) how wonderful, especially for other patients on the ward!
When he did come back and visit; we didn't have anyone on a heart pump (artificial heart); so I don't think they were so interested in him
brb
ah, well. We met a man on a heart pump while walking through the unit in Cleveland.
k
clunking sound in dishwasher; had to go reload some dishes (DH went to bed already and didn't hear it)
ah, yes, no good blocking the arms or finding broken things in there.
sc4.5*2 and sc5.12, stats for other? (sc4,5,4 i have)
the last one is sc4 with a stutter
evening all ;)
hi, pini
the hospital where I used to work had now developed a big CHF (Congestive Heart Failure) program and they now have people going home on heart pumps. Not as a bridge to transplant but rather as a device for them to live on forever
hi dc ;)
ty, pini

Hammock is on hiatus until the flood threat is over
Great.

A wheelbarrow at 20 months is impressive for sure.

I was able to take one day off (Spring break was week before last)
A WHOLE day?
I've been taking periodic Friday's off (when the office is normally closed so I have protected time) and look forward to taking a few more before school's out (oh, and the 18th of this month to meet dc in portland)....
