I think most dutchmen are happy today. Temp dropped significantly. We had quite a good thunderstorm last evening and night.
You have been having a heatwave - or just dry?
our temps jumped from around 20 C to 35+ C in one day, then, as usual here with high temps, it became humid and hot. Awful tension in the air. And then a huge thunderstorm. Very different from Aus, I bet!
sounds pretty much like Melbourne! 2/3 days of really high temps then a beautiful storm - sometimes just heat lightening and sometimes with rain
and unusually we had a really humid Summer down here too
sounds familiar indeed. We almost always have heavy rain with the thunderstorms. It goes ratatatatata on the streets and windows and roofs. We will be having more hot days, even stretches of hot weather in July and August. Almost always followed by thunderstorms and always humid. Humid isn't pleasant, lyn, am sorry.
Sorry for you too! the humidity is awful...of course it is a constant up in the North of Australia (tropical) but not usual for down South.
I can handle heat ok if it is dry. But the good part is, I love thunderstorms :)

Our cat would do that as a kitten, but now that it is summer and the windows are open, we have had to let him out, otherwise we wouldn't have any screens left.

We've had a teen-aged volunteer who has come to our Center and cleaned every Wednesday after our clinics for the past 2 years. She's entering college this fall (I'll really miss her!); but she says her major is Math and she's planning on a minor in chemistry. I'm thrilled that girls aren't discouraged from those courses these days

I was a real "freak" a million years ago when I was 16 and went to a Junior Engineers Summer Science Institute at a local college . . .
My best friend and I were the first females to take Trig and Physics in our high school (back in the '60's); and the teachers really put us down all the time.

Both Karin and I ended up with the highest scores on the national tests in trig, one guy beat me out in the physics exams. Karin and I look back and shake our heads at how sexist our school and community were

I took high school physics in the 1960s too, nef, and was the only girl in my class; the teacher was quite dismissive until I got 100% on the first test (which no one of any gender had done before); after that he was my best friend, and gave me all kinds of physics books that he had.

my computer is sick; got a virus before we left I think and it went viral after we got here. I'm using son's computer
but I love the skylights -- the first 6 months we were here I would go past my office or kitchen and reach in to "turn off the lights" -- it is lovely to have better light, especially in the middle of winter

Oh my! Stidkid should be glad I'm not his Mom. I would whisk that computer right out of his room if there were clothes hanging all over it, and I was losing computer time because of that.
actually, the better solution is to restrict access to MY computer. Which will happen if he doesn't get his act together by the end of the weekend... he wants to clean his room anyway, so it's like frosting rather than a carrot.
Ithink I would remove the clothing tree computer as well :-) or set my computer up with a password so that no one can access it except me (which I did by the way). My daughter has one of the first android phones out on the market and she can't wait to replace it--it has developed a mind of it's own!

I want to write a story about how everyone wakes up one day and suddenly there are no cell phones. I think mass panic would ensue. I am mystified at why people are so attached to their cell phones.
I agree Molly; my kids give me a bad time because I refuse to give up my land line at home and go strictly cell phone. One of these days, sorry to say, I'll be able to prove why!
molly, I got my first cell phone when I was driving our elder son to and from kindergarten (out of district) along a long stretch of sporadically inhabited rural highway in an area with a "meth problem" -- being rural, it's a boon (when we can get a signal)
I also got my first cell phone because of the amount of time I was on the road between work, sports, and other activities. It has been a blessing many times.
the other advantage can be that you can have a phone number that is not tied directly to a location, so for people who have concerns about personal security (single women living alone, for example) a cell phone can allow them to be contacted by prospective employers without worrying about being physically located by potential stalkers.
I use my cell phone for calls only, and important ones, not chit chat ones. I renewed my cell phone package today and the guy looked at me like I was from Mars when I said I didn't need text ability. McCurl, I still have a land line too.

I text the younger stidkid when he is in school -- texts don't ring; he knows I am trying to contact him and can call me back when it's allowed.
many years ago my parents were taking off on a trip with travel trailer; I insisted they take my pre-paid cell (what I had at that time). They broke down in the middle of nowhere and as soon as they got home they asked my sister to take them to get their own cell which they used on the road but now use it for long distance calls from home.
yes, molly, it's part of the reason our family maintains a mailing address in town... we have an unlisted phone number for the house and use cell phones or tom's work # for most professional contact numbers
See, in our schools, cell phones are supposed to be turned off during school hours. They aren't and that is not enforced, therefore, the kids are all just texting. Which defeats the purpose of "turn your cell phones off".
I'm glad my district enforces our cell phone policy.
