flipAmazon river dolphins, Inia geoffrensis, aka boutu, boto and bufeo, are one of the few species of fresh water dolphins and the most well-known river dolphin. They are a medium size dolphin with long beaks, a stocky body, and prominent forehead. They have long beaks with 24-34 conical and molar-like teeth. The conical teeth in the front of the mouth are used for holding prey, the molars in the rear of the mouth are used to grind food before swallowing. A characteristic unique to the Amazon river dolphin is stiff hairs on the beak; the hairs are a sensory organ that help sense prey in muddy river bottoms. Another interesting characteristic is that Amazon river dolphins are able to move their neck unlike other dolphin species that have fused vertebrae. Neck mobility enables the Amazon river dolphin to look to the side or down. They are also known for their keen eyesight and hearing. Amazon river dolphins are often found singly or in pairs. They are a gregarious species unafraid of boats. Like other dolphin species, they are equipped with audible sonar, which is used for echolocating prey. South American Indian folklore hails the Amazon river dolphin as sacred, leading to the belief that hunting and killing them would bring bad luck, therefore the dolphins were somewhat protected. The arrival of new settlers ended that protection as numerous Amazon river dolphins were killed for their skin for leather and fat for cooking. Several hundred of this species have been captured for live display in aquariums, including at least 100 taken by the US. Unfortunately, few were able to adapt to captivity. They are threatened by various activities, among them are incidental catches in fisheries, damming of rivers associated with hydroelectric development, deforestation, and pollution from mercury mining operations. Despite these problems, these beautiful creatures are still abundant in many parts of their range.

Hi ruru - there must be some strong reason for dolphins to fight thus; I hope that it is not a trait that increased "intelligence" leads to internecine strife. I like woodlice: we kept them for kids to look at in school and I never saw them fight or even spar off. When they meet they just wave feelers at one another and then trundle on by.

I realize this question is not germaine to the type of chatter that goes on on this site, but for some reason my cursor goes off in the word box after every word I add and I have to click on the empty box to get the cursor blinking again. It never did that in the past. Does anyone know how to get the cursor back into the box on a more permanent basis?

crystalle, you can only build snowmen and snowballs when the weather is right with just enough humidity and not too cold. That's only about 10% of the winter here (which is a good thing because those same conditions make shovelling the snow harder!

There were changes in the job that were quite gradual; and he never mentioned that he didn't like it anymore. We worked opposite shifts so I didn't see him when he came home. By the time I'd come home he'd decompressed and was either asleep or in a good mood. I felt really stupid when I found out he didn't like the job...

the one time I was fishing in Alaska and caught salmon, I tried eating the roe fresh, but it was too squshy!

I used to deepsea fish for mackerel and the mate would strap me into a chair to reel them in, afraid as he was that I'd get pulled over
in Alaska, it was just fly fishing and none of the fish were big

(but I caught a 23" rainbow trout with a fly called a fluffy bunny
we only killed what we would eat for lunch, otherwise all catch and release
our sturgeon would pull you off shore and drag you right to the bottom lol

the worst thing I ever caught was a disgusting large eel and, I am ashamed to say, I cut my line rather than bring it in
catch and release is the way to go ruby.we used to file all the barbs off our tackle to make it less traumatic for the fish
I've also caught nurse sharks and barracuda, but carefully (!!!) released them, too.

closest we get to sharks here with our freshwater lakes is the muskie(muskellunge) they are long and about the girth of a salmon and can be 20-75 pounds or more and have many rows of jagged sharp teeth.when you hook one and bring it to the side of the boat,you do not know wether to try and net the thing or beat it to death with an oar
there is a similar fish in "our" lake, ugly as sin with big jagged teeth and the French eat them! Yuck
I'm not so keen on fresh-water fish
french eat all kinds of horrible stuff,guss that is why they are all bitter and unfriendly..present company excluded

i did some stuffed,battered mushroom caps the other day,you should of been here

did them in an english beer batter,things were almost the size of peaches when i was done hehe
served them with a spicy dipping sauce and a simple salad
for those that wish to have a go with it,i use the jumbo white shrooms you can buy loose by the pound,i cut strongly smoked ham slices into 1 inch wide by 3 inch long strips and rolld these into a tube and stuff in the home in the mushroom,now take some nice soft provalone or swiss cheese and lightly roll in finely diced dill weed and place in the remaining space of the cavity pressing firmly batter wel and drain for 30 seconds and pop them into nice hot peanut oil for 2-3 min

Only ci6 and hi6 are what I would call American words.

Welsh pronunciation is easy - you just have to learn the Welsh alphabet. However, speaking the language is not so easy and also varies from place to place. Just like anywher else, even in a tiny place like the UK.
