Thing is, he's white as a sheet and coughing and has no appetite. But I had to attack the lying even if he was lying about lying.... Tricky one. But he says now that he said he was feeling well so he coudl go to school and see his girlfriend, which I'm sure IS the truth, so I explained that if he doesn't rest he will be sicker and miss more school, so he ias back under his blanket now.

I watched the Service of Remembrance from the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday evening. It never fails to move me. At the end they release poppy petals from the ceiling, each one representing a life lost. It's magnificent and touching all at the same time.
It is staggering I'm sure, not to mention emotional if you think over the years how many lives have been lost.
Absolutely, but the good thing is that the organisers highlight individuals and their stories so that it becomes meaningful on a personal level.
I remember when I was in elementary school, every year WW2 Veterans came and spoke to us. Even as a kid, I got it, to see the unexpected emotion that sometimes crept up on them when they talked.
They probably couldn't show their emotions at the time when it was happening, it's only later that they realise the impact of what they've seen and done.
And for many World War 1 veterans, it wasn't the done thing to talk about their experiences. My grandfather fought in France in World War 1 but pretty much refused to talk about it.
It absolutely wasn't discussed much. Not the way it was done.
Only thing my Uncle ever said was that he and some buddies of his buried their rifles before they left. Always said he knew exactly where. That was it. No glorifying, no complaining.
I feel curious though, to know what happened to him (my grandfather). The only detail I know, apart from his regiments etc, was that he had suffered from shell shock and spent some time in hospital - at one point didn't speak for six weeks.
Naturally you are curious. Dad never told us not to ask, we were always free to try, lol but in essence he said if our Uncle felt something needed sayin' he'd say it. He never did though. Not a word, except for the rifles.
I wonder if a farmer ever turned up those rifles?
Who knows.

The blue spruce are pretty hardy. They should do fine. We raised one from a little sprig. It's about 6 1/2 feet tall now. They do make the prettiest christmas trees.

Co-workers very senior dad, alert and oriented X3 has been in CHF for years. Status post right shoulder fx 3 weeks ago. He is not walking about much, is on coumadin and has a pacer, recently, had fluid seeping from an arm. Is this end stage?

that is NOT a straight forward or easy question, pam... my advice is that he needs to see a geriatrician... fellowship trained, board certified, geriatrician... they can fully assess him and try to get him back to his previous finctioning level if at all possible
it is not unusual that after an older adult sustains an injury as he did... goes in an out of hospitals, rehabs, different subspecialists offices... that things get missed or overlooked. In my biased opinion and from my experience, the best person to weight all this out is a geriatrician

a geriatrician looks at things very differently, as you may have seen in your own career pam... they will focus 1st and foremost on returning function and quality if life

it is not AT ALL unusual that general internist (and unquestionably subspecialists) will try to treat each individual problem... often doing more work-up and prescribing more meds, because they treat each symptom separately and not familiar with geri syndromes... this can lead to polypharmacy and further complications... a good geriatrician can assess him and make some changes that can often impact his quality of life hugely... and if things are not able to be improved... they'll work with him through that as well

a beautiful study came out a few years ago... H-EPESE... showing that elderly patients who take more than 5 medications have increased mortality after controlling for their underlying medical illnesses and functional status... funny how that one never hit the NY Times
I also lowered my cholesterol by a ton through exersise and eating. from about 240 when I was 18 to about 178 now.
