Imagination is a wonderful thing. Riverdance in slippers is a no-no however.
Riverdance without a respirator is a no-no as well.
I remember the Eurovision song conests that launched that dance - sent shivers down my spine.
It was responsible for a terrible lot of people picking up Irish dancing.
What about the best of both worlds, and create a new dance. Griverdance!

They wouldn't so much hang out at the diner as congregate on their tractors in the main street of the town.
Young farmer boys from around here can't drive cars until they're 17 but can drive tractors much earlier. They literally drive them into the village and hang out at the fish and chip shop.

Yes, but I also feel like a wimp, because others don't seem to go as slowly as I do. Then again, some of them have 4-wheel drive, and some of them are nuts and I later see them slid off the road. There were 3 times during the drive that emergency vehicles passed by going the other way.
I learned to drive in a very very bad winter, when kids went to school by skates, over the normal ro5. I can handle pretty much any kind of winter weather as a result, and I obtained a deep and abiding respect for the danger of it.

Then I got home and of course could only make it a few inches up the driveway, which is very long and curvy....but a dear friend had come while I was out, without telling me, and cleared the bottom of the drivway so I could pull out of the road. My flashlight batteries were dead, of course, but by then I didn't care. Put my cleats on my boots, focused on the direction of the house and trudged, trying not to think about those news articles where people are found frozen to death 5 feet from their front doors. But it wasn't windy, and not terribly cold (about 7F0 so I knew I'd be okay. Merp was so glad to see me, and I him.

Not just scale, but priorities. There are plenty of large countries that have adequate public transport. The US has been so focused on auto travel and nothing but,that our bus and rail system have been allowed to fall into utter disrepair. And now with the economic disaster, even more routs are being cut. Maybe the new administration will try to do something abotu this.

There are places, like New York City, where many people don't know how to drive and don't own cars. There are bus or subway stops every couple of blocks and no where to park.
I sometimes offer to drive and pick some friend up, or bring them home, and they live at the other end of the Netherlands. They say I am crazy, but then I remind them that for US people we would be considered neighbours. I mean, 2 hour's drive, or 3... you would laugh at it, right?

I have a friend who is *constantly* fighting his doctors. He even argues with his oncologist and disregards his advice. I find it so frustrating to listen to him complain. I always tell him I have complete faith in my doctors and do what they tell me. It's served me well.
I think actually Ata there is a correlation, the years they get it right....people dont get the flu...plus a lot of people say they have the flu but its just a cold...

Tyger, do you have trouble falling asleep? I have that problem and the meds don't work....so I sleep away the am part of the day. It is a real bummer, especially when I have to fast before blood work.

Jillibus, I had polio when I was 2 years old....lived a rather normal life ...2 kids (2 husbands) and was really enjoying life living with just my little dogs in Georgia ...alone for 10 years (10 WONDERFUL years) then had 2 strokes in 2002 and my youngest daughter brought me to New England and wouln't let me go back. So, I'm "making do".

jillibus, my new Primary Care doctor told me about a hospital in New Jersey that has a great post polio clinic (can't remember the city) I contacted them but haven't had a chance to go yet. If your friend thinks she might benefit from them I will search (its somewhere here on my desk) for the name and address for you to give toher.
