no, we haven't. I grew up in Queens, in a working class Irish/Italian neighborhood where my father had a candy store. Went to Queens College as an undergraduate and then, much later, went to Syracuse and Marywood (in Scranton) for my MA in fine arts. Lived in Bingamton for years and years

I play Lexulous, Scrabble, this + Quote Puzzler games (10 daily). <--my latest addiction + obsession, thanks to nrkii.
i used to play quote puzzler
I tried Quote Puzzler a few years ago but was too small and fiddly for me. It cost a bit too didn't it? (which is probably why I didn't continue after trial)
There are now 10 daily puzzles on QP, each a different challenge for the brain.

A question for the birders out there. About an hour ago there was a pair of birds in the trees...they were backlit, the sun wasn't up completely, so I couldn't make out detail-but the shape was very much like a pigeon, mourning doves, but they seemed quite a bit larger. And they were way up in the tree, eating berries or something off of the tree. Any guesses? Usually when I see doves here they are ground feeding. Do grouse ever go up that high?

We've had a string of cat tragedies in the area recently. Four of my friends have lost theirs. Two to old age, but the other two completely unexpected. One yesterday, a one year old, who snuck into the crafts room, swallowed thread with a needle on it and damaged his esophagus so badly that he had to be put down. I feel so awful for my friend. She feels guilty, but there's no way to avoid all of the accidents that can happen however careful one is.

scariest storm I've ever been in was from Whitefish, to Missoula MT. in a wet winter storm where I had to stop every few miles and knock the ice off the headlights, window and wiper blades. The antanna on the car would start vibrating and humming so loud it sounded ghostly.

I just know that my son had a bunch of nerdy friends in HS and from then on and *some* of these guys have hacked into things they shouldn't have (but claim they never did anything illegal or steal anything)

we went once and i thought it was good, but it was mother's day, very crowded and the service was slowwwwww, which made my mother cranky and I have bad associations with it (she gets rude sometimes). think the pizza was great though
i now favor either tomato pie with a bit of added cheese or fresh mozzarella margarita. when we went there the pizza was very dark on the bottom.

it seems the worst of the current trend is "blaming" rather than looking for systemic interactions that could be altered.

My heart says that she is desperate and (like many) feeling the pressure from non-educators to make drastic changes.
I would look at curriculum, at the expectations for work (if students need to work for money outside of school, heavy homework loads are not reasonable)...
sounds like the medical field... nonmedical execs making decisions that should be made by medical pros
however, the cynical side of me is thinking it might be a ploy to rehire teachers with less expensive compensation packages.
the teachers' union is objecting of course but here's the clincher the teachers are not willing ( or able ) to be there before and after school for extra help and do not want to help with extra cir. activites
sry... i've only got half of the conversation; are schools closing? or just teacher cutback so kids education is compromised

teachers should not HAVE to do that, west. The school should be able to hire para-educators or supplemental teachers. To be honest, a full-time teaching position takes plenty of time anyway, adding additional duties is not for everyone.

we just had a big cut in our one and only school... paraprofessionals were cut, but... there's only 83 kids in the school!
well, if it's a question of money... then the district needs to look at every option of course.

however no married woman were ever hired
