Thank you, Lickety!!!
"Well I told him right then," Fido said "It should be plain to see; the **** of the biscuit is the apostrophe."
goose alert
Thanks Lickety. Better go back to lurking since I am an embarrassment.

Wow feeble. You obviously chose the wrong name!

All change -- don't you know that when you Play at this level there's no ordinary *****
they probably aren't really bruised, but it sure feels like it! is there a home remedy that would help me suppress it?

Hell is other people (except for Babble, of course)

hi kje ;)
fireworks
wtg grem!
I was actually cluing a word. That line is the last line of a famous play with a word in the title
oh, sorry, douglas...means I should probably start reading more... ;)
Bowing to grem's uncanny excellence!
play by sartre?
Yeah, that one!
phant: tortoise
Hi. Just made it home tonight. Hope everyone has had a nice day/night.

All hail to the Amazing Gremlinn!

can't believe gremlinn is done already...(bowing to Gremlinn)
has anyone but feeble and gremlin found the tr9?
fireworks
wtg dart
wow dart you too amazing
yes, I have it
oh my -- dashing dart too!!!
I wouldn't say it's a common word
feeble said it was -- glad to know otherwise.
might be common to feeble!
;)
it might be common in the UK, looking at the definition
it's common enough in the british constabulary jilli
I had a vague notion of what it was
I was lost in the grid, and lost being a literal term today. :D
ty gort -- that did it for me!
<-- might need to move to England
yeah...take me with you Pini
You can tell this is an easy grid when grem finishes in 15 minutes, and I get nbt in 30
it rhymes with a midday meal
that's a real word?????
you betcha.
wow ;)
wtg doug
a bit easier than average Doug, yeah
I still have 3 bt
I have 4
Bertie Wooster (played by Hugh Laurie) was on the wrong end of a tr9 for pinching a policeman's helmet on boat race night
I only have 16 words
I loved those Laurie/Fry comedies, gort!
I'll try and remember that one, gort!
they're brilliant, aren't they?
i just bought myself Jeeves and Wooster to convalesce with - fantastic
Absolutely -- and I much prefer that Laurie to House
have you seen blackadder?
convalesce, gort?
Laurie was rather hilarious in the Black Adder comedies
I missed blackadder
blackadder was the first i knew of laurie, but my students (20 years younger than me) just introduced me to his earlier stuff they'd discovered on youtube
u?
First time I saw Hugh Laurie I think was in one of the Dalmation movies....101 ?
I also enjoyed Hugh Laurie in Stewart Little. I was touched by the care and kindness of the father he portrayed.
and of course Stuart Little
I never saw the Dalamtian movies either :(
He is a great actor.
He plays one of the guys hired to grab the puppies
the skinny one?
yes
the U is un6/21 pinkula
well, I was thinking of the wrong guy...you're talking about Dr. House
thx feeble
yes he is House
Yes, Hugh Laurie is Dr House. I wish he wasn't.
really why jilli?
oh i dunno, i think it's a mark of his skill that he can go from blithering popeyed fool to cranky self-absorbed uberintellectual sourkraut at the drop of a clacker board
wow that is a mouthful gort
yeah, try saying it with a mouth full of marshmellows and a couple of straight whiskeys :)
He's more likeable as a twit like Bertie Wooster!
lol...I don't think so...everyone would wear it
But the nice thing about it is that there's a Hugh Laurie role that just about everyone likes. I know it's hard to believe, but some people actually like House
Oh, I know, doug.
upper O?
beasts
just stats, plz; no clue
Besides, he speaks such a lovely English English.
too late! LOL

thx une ;)

:-D
oh yes, that America song is brilliant
ahh, glad you liked it jilli; were you as stirred as i was by the sentiments it expressed?

with 25 to go, I bid you all good nite! *poof*

I'm not even halfway and haven't found that un6 yet either.

Now I see, barb, and thanks, pini!

so nbt :)
how do you spell penchent? with an a?
yes, gort
and faux not feux? (should have listened in french classes at school instead of wondering how the pen of my uncle could be greater than the garden of my aunt)
faux as in faux pas, yes.
thanks jilli
yw
faux = singular of fauces from yesterday
Expected ro5 to not be a word, but it was. I think of it as a French city.
i thort faux ment fake as in faux fur
It does
yep
ty doug
over halfway now :)
I am at 40 words and heading to bed...night all ((hugs))
night barb -- pleasant drems
so lots of fake fur is fauces fur?
*dreams too
faux is an adj, no pl
A ro5 is also a breed of duck
oh dear, gonna have to take great thick incomprehending noggin off to get my children to read to me
Actually, French uses plural adjectives for plural nouns.
yes, but it seems there is no pl for faux
But as a loanword in English, it would just stay "faux".
I think in French "faux" would be its own plural anyway, but I'm not sure.
so says my dictionary, grem
"Fauces" from yesterday is the plural of the rarely used Latin "faux" - I guess totally unrelated.
(Latin for "throat")
Probably related to "faucet"
I would think so.
fireworks
YAY anike!!!
TY. Off to do some work now. Happy babbling
I'm a good bit over halfway with nbt, declaring moral victory and wishing you the goodness to which you aspire. Good night all!

helllo
oh i dunno, i'm sorta average, and i reckon it's not too bad (how's that for vague?:)
lol gort
hi mlf
If you're average, that makes me a cretin
I guess your feel for it will depend on how you like the letters
hi mlf, you're late!
I do tend to find the boards with uncommon letters a bit easier
yeah i was chatting lol
oops gotta go, weeping offspring, cheerio
good luck gort

hi Dee
great icon
thanks :)
yw... really sweet
the more I learn in life, the more I realise that it is true...love does conquer all
very true!
how've you been, Dee? Long time since I saw you?
had a few health issues, all checked out and okay, had a few visits with our daughter, so have been here at odd times. How about you?
glad you're ok now :) I am good, finally reaping some awards from years of therapy.
fantastic!!!
bet that feels great
kids okay?
am pretty darn grateful for it, yes. It feels like finding myself back, but better than before. Still a lonnnng way to go, but I cannot begin to tell you how great it feels to have some energy again!
kids are doing wonderful. Both into puberty now, so very interesting, switching between child and wannabe-grownup the whole time.
I totally understand the energy / motivation issue. Lethargy accompanies fibromyalgia, and it is one of the things I hate the most. Having increased energy would be a huge blessing for you!
lol 12 going on 40...
been without that energy for over 14 years, and actually probably longer. Totally functioned on will power. Now, some things come easy. Just doing them, can you imagine? I really hope you may be blessed with that too.
oh yes, exactly!
great to hear
Hi guys! can anyone clue the tr9, please.
hi kimm, don't have it yet, sorry
sounds like the midday meal you have that is a bit formal... a group of women have them...
Thank you, Dee! I'm off to bed now. *poof*

All this hilarity is not helping me get words entered.
ruru and I just feel this ursa to pun
aaaghhhh.... ruru....
I crown ruru the King of Puns.
but it works miracles for your mood, right FM?
can I be the Queen then? Or are mine too lame?
ruru.... i applaud your need to be innovative in your puns....but....
It surely does sprite :)
:D
I did mention the goose, but that was before any of you got here
<<< will gladly accept sprite as my Queen of puns
mark twain once said you can measure the quality of a pun by the volume of the groans
Yes you can spritey
settled then :)
but rolin?
very true, josh. Jokes pull laughter, puns pull groans.
BR is even punnier that I am...
Just wish I was more alert - Ah perhaps another mug of tea would help, BRB
but .... ruru....a koala is not a bear....
BR is the Emporor of Puns
<< claims artistic license
hmz talking about typos... Emperor.
ahhhh good one rolin!
I have big ears .. maybe I can be the prince of puns
Big ears and big bears
a koala is what a marsupial?
yup....sorry to be pedantic...but i am an aussie.. and its something i feel i must correct..
np, corrections are good when we are bearong
just don't cub me over the head with pedantism
It was Big Ears and Noddy wasn't it?

Very well. How's is everything growing in your garden FM?
It is a constant joy every day.
I have learnt so much but still have a long way to go.
so pleased for you
gracious! fireworks!
gratz jilli
congrats Jilli
There is a climbing rose that goes up and over the shed - it must have more than 100 buds on it, they are just starting to show colour - red. Will take some pics when it come into flower.
Congrats jilli!
I'm getting better at remembering the strange words
oh lovely, FM! I am not doing that well, but the pe4 are growing like mad now, as are the potatoes.
thanks, all!
like the sound word, jilli? ;)
Congratulations, jillibus.
one of our bridge buddies brought a little nosegay of beautifully scented tiny pink sweetheart roses from her garden to our hostess today.
sounds pretty
fireflies
sweetheart roses, I have never heard that before but I know the roses you mean - lovely
sound word? I dunno -- maybe!
Congrats Sprite
YAY sprite!
today's sound word. The exclamation.
Congratulations, sprite.
Love roses but never been in charge of them before, so to speak. HAve been using the internet to read up on so much.
thanks all! Off to other things, have fun all.
I must be sensible and go to bed unless anyone wants clues...
WTG spritey sprite!
Bye sprite!
BBL got some stuff to do so may as well drag this out
I have a rose in my garden for the first time -- just a baby so far, but it's called Little Darling and comes from that same bridge buddy.
and I am going to dive back into the grid as I haven't added a word in the last half hour.
gremlinn and dart can rest easy....
Well, I'm off then -- goodnight all -- and *poof*
I think it's a very nice grid for its size.
Good night, jillibus.
morning all, the group of 3 tr`s have 5/10 & 5/16 last 5/10 unable to find
It's either tr5/10 -French three, or tr5/10, queen's seat minus h.
have queen seat so it`s the other one .....ty
You're welcome.
Well there is my new fact for today - didn't realise that the ro5/12 which is a capital city in France is also a duck.
We live and learn, don't we?
Yup, have been there and it has a wonderful cathederal if I remember correctly *heads off to google*
have the french three.....5/10 comes under the next tr 6/21
Was correct, dating back to the 12 centuary although there had been a church there since the 4th C.
There is only one tr6/21, French three comes immediately under it, then the Queen seat, then the tr5/16. French three isn't the same as the gathering of three singers, although it uses the same letters.
oh thanks for those clues Haz.
wow, found the 9!
got it thank you......firworks
No problem. And the 9 is fun, isn't it, though I'd rather not be on the receiving end.
Well done, millsbooks!
lol yes, who knew that the British *Bobby's* stick would ever crop up in the grid.
Congrats mills!
hello
Did you watch Eurovision, FM or Mills? I didn't see any of it, but hear that we covered ourselves in glory yet again.
or should that be Bobbies?
Hello, herin.
Bobbies, I think.
Um, did watch parts of it - didn't see our act but watched the end as I was up late that night. At least we didn't get nil points.
Hi herin.
No, you were right the first time. Bobby's possessive, Bobbies plural.
Hi all - and ty for the 9. Nice to get a 9 before even looking at the grid!!
Hello, Sally.
Morning Sally.
O boy Someone needs to feed the cats they are getting distructive
Glad my grammar is standing the test this a.m.
I know.
This is turning into quite an easy grid today, still waiting for the wall but haven't hit it yet.
It is a nice grid.
I don't think there are any words that haven't been seen in babble or in life before.
lol that sould like something BR would have typed.
*sounds
Like it so far, but only just started. Nice size for a busy day. Also glad to see I have an appropriate icon for today :-)
It is a great pic Sally!
Well, I must head off to get ready for the Antiques Fair. It's a nice day so maybe we'll get a bit of passing trade from people heading towards the North Coast.
Not technically very good or up to Ata's standard, but just saw it and took it on my phone!
Hi and bye Haz.
Good luck and hope the day goes well Haz.
Have a good days Ha
z
Toodle-oo! I'll maybe look in later. Enjoy the day!
We can aspire to Ata's level but that is darn good for a mobile pic. My mobile just makes calls - no pics, nothing.
Sally if that was my cat right now the chicken would be drum sticks
Looking back in the chog about your roses, FM. We have some wonderful small pink climbing roses called Paul's Himalayan Musk (from David Austen roses). They are about to flower, and we have two over an arch and one climbing into a tree. They are gloriously scented.
lol herin. I was just wondering which one was in the dominant position - I think the chook is?!
Both my cats need to be feed
Oh heavenly Sally.
lol herin. Well the chooks are as big as the cats and take no notice of them, so don't run away, so no excitement for a cat. Apart from the first day when the cats tried to stalk the chooks, there is no problem.
Go feed them then herin :)
Have the new chooks settled in Sally?
Yes, all harmony FM! Also now have new electric poultry netting so can relax about daytime foxes.
The one in the icon is my newest, a Light Sussex, and laying for England.
Great! I was driving to the supermarket yesterday afternoon and a fox crossed the road. Mind you I am in a very rural area but it was interesting to see one in daylight. Yay - re the laying - how about predicting goals for England?
Goals? Is there a football match somewhere?
LOL
Saw a snippet on the BBC this morning that even nappies are being branded for the world cup!
!! Well, this is a football-free and TV-free household :-)
No tv?
Haven't had one for 20-25 years, herin.
Football free I can go with but TV free not sure. When I moved into this house didn't have TV for 7 days and did find many great radio progs but would miss not having TV although I only have 4 channels now which is more than enough.
*can feel herin fainting from here*
I love the radio, reading, listening to audio books, playing Babble. And we talk a lot!
yep
We do watch quite a few films. We have a DVD player and projector and a home-made screen which pulls down the wall, so big screen. T made it from a roller-blind kit and some roofing material left over from the house build, so it cost about £12 to make!
I look at BBC news as well on the computer.
Excellent!
O that is a brill idea
Ah, I was going to ask if you did view on the net.
And very occasionally I will watch something on BBC iPlayer (like the Swedish Wallander, for example, which I love). Not the Branagh version!
I used BBCs IPlayer last night to catch up on the Dr Who episodes I had missed. It is lovely to be able to catch up on progs.
One thing I have found facenating is local radio stations. Where I was before all I listened to was Capital Radio - London based. Now I pick up all the local radio stations and the are so good.
Should I poke the kitties?
Some of them are really good, especially for local road/weather etc. Mostly I'm a Radio 4 girl, though. I record drama series, because I know I will forget the last vital episode if not, then I put them on my iPhone and can listen on the train, in bed, whatever.
Why should you do that herin?
because
go feed them
nah its funnier this way
we know you love them
They do have some food in their bowl but they want more
Ah they are piggy cats :)
Yes they are
*grin*
You sound like Cruel Frederick, herin :-) Was looking up the link. My father used to recite this to me by heart (not because I was an unkind child but because he loved the verse): <http://everything2.com/title/The+Stor y+of+Cruel+Frederick>
I am not mean they get feed high end cat food
I have this somewhere, in memory of my Dad, but was lovely to read it again :-)
I'm sure you aren't mean, was teasing.
They are just pigglets
It also doesn't help that the other human isn't home so kitty himself is having a mental
I used to have one like that. She would every other cat's food then her own. When we had very tiny kittens we rigged up a cardboard box with little holes in and their food inside, so they could go in and eat and Puddy (the appropriately-named cat) couldn't get at their food.
Never come across that poem before, bet children would love it.
Time for me to go - have much to do today - how much I achieve is another issue :) Happy Babbling and thanks for the chat.
Later FM
I'm glad you like it FM. I loved it! My father would also come in when I was late getting up and start my day with "Awake! For morning in the bowl of night has flung the stone that puts the stars to flight" (Omar Khayam for anyone who doesn't recognise it.
That poem remind's me of the lion story
Oh will look that up Sally.
Albert and the Lion?
*poof*
Omar Kyaham is a wonderful poem FM.
can anyone tell me is Monday a holiday in Canada?
That is the one

err no thanks NB (hello btw) - I have salmon, now pots and veg with hollandaise sauce waiting to be cooked in my kitchen.
Yummy
Very rare that I eat choc.
lol! and hi :) I actually think celery is probably one of my favourite foods. Raw. I like things that crunch.
I love celery too but am just about to go and make lunch. Love crudites with dips - heaven.
celery raw yes - cooked no.
same with fennell
I have a recipe for tomato and fennel soup
oh now that sounds interesting herin.
You know I've never tried hollandaise sauce. Everyone tends to rave about it but it seems to be just butter!
Toms are so good for the immune system and so much more.
It needs a good shot of fresh lemon juice NB otherwise it is just buttery.
herin can you email me the recipe if poss?
sounds like things that doesn't even go to the hips or thighs...just straight to the heart :P
http://tinyurl.com/2an7hbz
Right here
and on that note I must go and get food - tum is rumbling and needs feeding. Back later.
I have ditched the Fennel in the past added basil and had just tomato

morning Babblers
Hi NonNo
what does the 9 start with?
tr9, nono
thanks movieman
yw nono
Good morning; I see our state's Indian tribe is in the grid, but of course, it's a proper noun and won't be accepted.
good morning Merk
Everyone is holidaying, I think ... or lurking.
I'm about to take my morning walk.
have a nice walk.
good morning. I just got here, not lurking I promise. Helllooooo Lurkers!
good morning Red
Hi!
hey, red, merk, and nono! :-)
hi Une
Hi Une!
Red you have my teeth all stuck together with those gummy bears :)
:-D
I need to change icon, yesterdays icon was bears, so I got creative. today is pet icon monday.
anyone have a hint for the tr9?
something a cop would use
ok . . . hmmmm . . . thanks :-)
a policeman's baton, Unea :)
hey, NB :-)
hi Nancy Boy
mornin' ladies ;)
mmm,i only know it as a baton...gotta get this brain going today....
hi Crossy
howdy nono
hi cross.
hmmm, not a trombone . . .
howdy red
I think it might be a bit of a British thing, to call it a tr9...
une, go from the top tr....
LOL Unea, but wouldn't you love it if that's what they did use?
or a trumpet . . . :-)
rhymes with the posho term for yer midday meal ;)
weeeee FIREWORKS!
mmm...
ah ha
yes, NB, you could scare the bejesus outta people with a loud BLAT!
aaahhh, tx NB!!
truncheon
I finally got the tr9...not usually an American usuage for that word
congrats, nono!!!
crossy, you got it!
morning, annie :-)
UMMMM Crossy :P
ty for that clue nb
*usuage
Hi Annie
Hi crossy and everyone
Hi Nono
and think of the damage that slidey bit could inflict Unea!
no problem, Crossy :)
woo hoo, thanks Crossy! Good mornning to all of you
Morning Mom!
Hi (((Mom))) how are you today?
actually, NB, I played trombone in the high school marching band and that's why trombones were at the very front -- no one wanted a big brass boink in the back!
morning, mom! :-)
aha, hi Une
oh crpa..i put that in chog,didnt i/
crap*
LOL! Damage control ;) I always thought it'd be really difficult to march and play at the same time. I was in a rock band briefly, but it's a lot easier to play guitar and fling oneself around in a disorderly fashion ;)
:-D
lol Crossy I never noticed it
gotta take pups out to pee -- BRB
and I must think about getting up! later x
{{Nono}}, {{Annie}}, {{Une}}, {{Crossy}}, {{NB}} so good to see all of you
Annie, I am doi ng just fine. How are you?
Hi Mom
and good to see you this Memorial Day, Mom
red, how is teulu?
{{Red}}, good morning. Do you have the day off?
and you as well Annie.
teulu is good. he just finished running 2 miles with me.
My thanks to all currently serving and the veterans.
I sort of have the day off. It is my first day at my new job, starting at 11PM...
will you be working that shift on a steady basis Red?
ah, the night shift. I wish you a good night
7p-7a its going to be "fun"
And profitable.
does that qualify for a shift differential?
profitable is good, red
12 hour shifts are killers tho, well worth the extra pay
how many days a week Red?
3
good morning, could I get the beginnings of the 3 7's, please?
and yes, a big shift differential, but I do want to go back to days.
good morning Marc, I am sorry but I don't have any of the 7's
Well, Nono I have always worked 12 hr shifts, I cant imagine doing anything else.
I have the 9 but no sevens.
hello, mom
po, st and to are the 7's Marc
to7 is a visitor to a country not ones own
That is what a lot of the nurses are our hospital work. 36 hours is considered full time for them
what do you do Red?
Thanks Annie!
I am a Nurse.
thanks Annie, that gave me three
very typical woman job!!
thanls Annie
a very caring profession
it takes some one very special to be a nurse
red, and a much needed profession
Mom really knows how to say nice things.
12 hour shifts seem to be the norm for hospital nurses but it just seems not right to me. It is such demanding work by the end of 12 hours you must be exhausted Red
truthful things, Red
Well, as far as where I work, the Emergency, there is a rhythm and pattern. For day shift the first 4 hours are not very busy and for the night shift, the last 4 hours are typically not that busy....so it isnt that bad.
I would hate hate to work 5 days a week.
anyone have the other 7's?
which one do you have Marc?
sorry Marc, I just started.
to7
po7, st7
po7 works off the po4/5
Hi Ladycece

We had to memorize it also Annie, altho I have forgotten most of it now but still love the poem

{{TO}} have a good day
just read a funny comment from a French Open blogger . . . "things I've noticed": The words Simple Dames at the top of the big women’s draw on site. It means “women’s singles.†As funny as it looks, I like the words above the men’s draw even more: Simple Messieurs.
bye TO
good grief,in not seeing many words today.are most of them french or unwords?

Hi all, back to finish. Oh no, French words?
Hugs to you Mom!
i hear my host up and moving, time to go. bye annie and mom
bye bye TO
bye Owl, have a peaceful day
{{Annie}} lots of hugs to you as well.
well, NB the fr4 5 5 6 are English as well
po6 and 7 are French but used by English speakers . . .
ro4/5 and 5/12 are French but have been in the grid a lot
why can't they throw in the odd korean word, and give me a break ;)
then there's ve5 and 6, originally French
NB, good luck getting Korean characters to show up correctly in the chog -- but it would be fun!!
NB I used to work with a Korean gentleman who used one of the first Korean word processors
amazing to watch . . he had to actually back space and "build" characters! :-)
mmm lots and lots of small to words it seems
bonjour! - love those french vowel combos in the grid
LOL! I wonder if it'd show up if I put my name in here...worth a try maybe!
give it a shot, NB!
french drives me nuts,i have spent 20 years trying to forget as much of it as i can as i was force fed it as a child;(
bonjour, JBV :-)
ì˜ë°° do we get that?
crossy, when the shoe's on the other foot . . . I taught English at a Berlitz school in Paris
yes, NB!!!!
oh,dear, crossy, quel dommage
lol,i see your glyphs nb;))
lol unbe
English has soooo many "exceptions"
une*
how did you do that, NB?
copy and paste?
한êµì–´/ì¡°ì„ ë§
oh yeah, copy and paste. I don't know how you'd go about typing it!
yep, it works!
Is that symbol a Korean word or letter, NB?
oohhh, but it's not really Korean, it's numbers and letters
which one, Annie? Most of it, I wouldn't be sure - I speak a little, VERY little, but can't really write it.
I know the swears. ;)
hi all
NB, the first symbol that you typed?
hey, jmc!
hi jmc
oh, that I typed! I don't know what they mean individually, but they are my first name. I think. I might have to look at Leo's chest for reference...
LOL
because he has it tattooed on him - I should hasten to add!
i assumed that NB
yeah, he's quite soppy ;)
i got nothing here in this grid
i got 12 words so far and not another word is showing itself
jmc, the grid started slowly for me also
apples, peaches, pears etc
I started fast, definitely slowing down now though..
ty annie I so didn't see that
just saw it now, jmc...been that kind of grid
anyone have a clue for en 5?
and a dried one: pr5/14 LOL
all that discussion of french and I thought prix would work
i keep trying enure, annie! LOL
en 5/16 - french literary term or ambassador??
sorry, my french is just a little rusty
aahhh, thanks!
thanks, jbv got it
and plural!
forget the ambassador p art
the ambassador word needs a Y
ty i got it
have op4, or6, ou4, ov4, ox4 -- missing?
lots of numbers in the grid
ou 5
tx, jbv
and we have the Grand Ole Opri! LOL
and thanks for the or 6
yw :-)
Une, how are things in Nashville?
wet
we've had around 18 inches of rain this month . . .
sorry to hear that
I see lots of news about the clean up - people volunteering, etc. -
it is gorgeous but hot here and I spent too much time in the garden yesterday so am sitting with a heating pad today
progress is being made but it'll take a loooong time to restore what was damaged/destroyed
Good morning everyone? Anybody working today? I am on call but the office is closed.
yes, JBV, it's been simply amazing
hi scrab
hi, scrabs - no work today
hey, scrab :-)
soon I can say that every day!
no not even me
hi, Scrabbs :) I am working, later.
my son is planning on going to Bonnaroo again - do you think they are ready for the crowds?
oh, man, you couldn't PAY me, JBV! LOL!!
I am guessing it is not a holiday for britain nb
I planted 36 petunias on Saturday and I see this morning that they are ALL dug up! Squirrels looking for bulbs to eat, I suspect.
oh noooooooooooooo!
what is bonnaroo?
last year it was a mudfest - this year hoping for sunshine
bummer scrabs
it's a music festival, jmc, modern day woodstock
ah
we've got a bank holiday here; however, I don't know what's going down in 'merica ;)
those rascally squirrels
Yes, Une! I walked out to confirm.
today is Memorial Day, NB, day to remember those who died in war
oh okay nb maybe we celebrate the same day -- this is memorial day to remember those who died in war
JBV, Stevie Wonder and Conan O'Brien among many others -- not bad!!
Memorial Day here, NB. To honor war veterans.
www.bonnaroo.com/artists.aspx
squirrels a rats with good PR
Squirrels are satanic!!!
squirrels and rats are both SO cute!
veterans day is for veterans -- today is for war dead -- a fine distinction
NB!!!
Une, my columbines flowered this year--last year I planted from seeds. Very cool purple flowers on LONG stems.
blech
Yes, I typed that wrong.
ohhh, I see. Is there any kind of ceremony, or just a day off, or what?
Many ceremonies + parades.
wow, never tried them from seeds -- kudos!!!
squirrels here are spoiled - they live in a ritzy condo - my son's tree house has been converted to squirrel haven
right now, with all the rain, my hydrangeas are absolute divas! :-)
hmmm well someone from the government goes and lays a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier
they are Unea! they're both so smart. One of my favourite things about coming to London used to be looking for mice on the underground, lol
Last yr I planted seeds for everything--tomatoes, flowers.
mice are cute, rats not so much
NB, I KNOW they're smart -- which makes them all the more infuriating!
I get plants since my hubby died -- being a single mother meant I had to stop doing something and planting from seeds was it
I think they are. Got a great picture of Leo with a friend's pet rat on his head!
now i buy plants because i am lazy
*shudder*
Une, here is my silly mistake: I bought 2 flats (36 plants) of what I thought were impatiens for my shaded front yard. When I got home and pulled the label out---Vinca = sun plant!
scrabs, a friend of mine tosses out a big handful of poppy seeds in the fall and right now has gorgeous big red poppies !
Hello
Vinca! ohno!! I'll gladly give you all of mine!
vinca does okay in shade
hi herin
vinca does ok EVERYWHERE!
I bought a plant called Papaver Champagne that has a poppy-like flower--will plant it today.
soooo invasive
(at least here it is)
I bought vinca vine for out front, under trees, but the other vinca = flowers.
Hello
scrabs, it IS a poppy and soooo pretty :-)
hey, herin!
I will go back into town today to buy impatiens.
Well, golly, Une.
I have impatiens, marigolds and geraniums - nice colors and all are blooming like crazy
impatiens are so sweet . . . and the double pink ones look like little roses . . .
yes, I have those, Une, beautiful!
Here in Zone 4/5 I cna only start planting annuals now. This is a big weekend for shopping for flowers + plants here.
cool!
and something new for me this year - celosia, grows tall and has a fuzzy spike
FYI I planted some baptisia a few years ago and it's spread like crazy
I highly recommend it -- makes a longlasting cut flower and is so pretty in a vase with peonies
I don't know either of those.
AND the foliage is beautiful after it blooms
Some one needs gto do our garden
full sun perennial, scrabs -- virtually carefree!
I will look for it, Une.
I have impatiens on my terrace and it does quite well. It can be windy up here so I need hardy flowery things...any suggestions
Hi Annie
marigolds
scrabs, i had to order it -- haven't ever seen it in local nurseries
Hi Scrabbs
JBV, Yes, I have marigolds too..have to get some more
so many color variations, too, Annie
I love to look at my very little garden
Daft Question But Scrabbler you a Vegetarian?

Good Morning Fellow Babblers. I just got her about 10 minutes ago and just found the 9! WOOT!!
It's a good grid today Nef.
you go nef!!!
I'm glad it's a small grid today. I haven't been able to finish any big grids all month! (I also wasn't here the first 3 weeks of May either!)
There have been some doozies recently but you should enjoy todays. Hi lb - haven't seen you for ages!
I agree Cherrypop - I tried that word several times myself!
hi FM. it has been a while.
good morning all
i am usually lurking
hey pini
off for lunch! catch y'all tomorrow! enjoy your day!
take care littlebit
bye littlebit. Don't just lurk when you come here; at least say Hi!
hiya Nef...how's it going?
okay for me; but DH isn't so good today. He's got a headache and they won't let him do anything unattended (and I don't blame them!)
Have you suggested the decorative headgear to him yet? ;)
Not yet. He was pretty down when I talked to him. I'll take in pictures though and maybe that will help
Not yet. He was pretty down when I talked to him. I'll take in pictures though and maybe that will help
might help a little...even if it brings a brief smile...don't forget to say you'd be getting one for your dau, that might help with a 2nd smile ;)
gosh, did I say the wrong thing?
* zips lips *
Thankful Memorial Day to all in the USA...and anywhere else where those who died for our freedoms are honored.
hi java
Hi all!
shared sentiment
thanks, Pini
I'm feeling contemplatative today...which is probably a good thing, considering the day. So if I write something a little weird, please understand.
*contemplative*
no worries...
I actually put a write-up about Memorial Day in my prof today...
<-- from a military family
Good. I was somewhat bummed out when almost all the comics I usually read had nothing about Memorial Day today. A couple of them did yesterday, but most today were about the day off from work. Is that what's this has become for most Americans? Just a day off?
Agreed....but I also tend to think that any number of US holidays are recognized a "just a day off"
tr
You mean like Christmas and Thanksgiving? July 4th seems to be an excuse to drink and set off fireworks - and maiming oneself.
hi inge
tr what inge?
yes, java
Hi Pinik. Java, Inge...
hiya red
Hi!
I am just picking away at this grid.
Those that died for freedom are not forgotten - we have been celbrating the 70th anniversiary of Dunkirk this week when a huge flotilla of boats set of form the English coast and rescued over 3000,000 men from the beaches of France. Many of the boats that went this week for the memorial were the ones that did the deed 70 years ago.
Hi FM.
Hey red!
oooh, very impressive, FM and what a great memorial to them!
Wow! That's amazing. And thank you for the memorial.
i do think the war is more memorable in those countries that experienced so much bombing and shelling...
There were quite a few survivors from that time ( in their 90's now) that made the trip back in memory of those that had fallen.
Not that it should be this way....
FM - thank you from me too, on the Memorial
My Grandfather was involved there, but he died about 2 years ago.
You're probably right, red. But as you wrote, it shouldn't be that way. We all benefit from freedom.
both my brother and my nephew are in the service now and has been in Iraq. so glad they came back safe.
Thank them both for their service from me/us...
glad to hear that big red.
will do. java
My bro (11 mos older than me) has been actively serving for the past 20 years and seen 5 engagements. I'm proud of him, honored he's my brother, and glad he's still here!
I shall go back to lurk mode now but just wanted to share a piece of history with you.
Glad you did, FM. And thank your brother, too, Pinik
thx java...will pass the word ;)
yw java - google the dunkirk rescue and you will find out a whole lot more. *poof*
I will also be slipping out shortly, trying to nap, as I have to go to work tonight....
take care, red
Lullaby and good night, close your eyes now and sleep tight..
lovely tune, java...I think everyone's fallen back to sleep! :)
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - what?
* quiet giggle *
good...we didn't wake anyone else...I've put a silencer on my keyboard.
;)
Hellow early birds. Oh, not so early. We're going to go to Ft. Lewis to the memorial service at the cemetery.
Lovely -
Lovely
wish I could ride on the bumper, stid
We could both go - waving our flags along the way
Hi all. Stid I lived in Ft. Lewis as a kid
I have a few neices and nephews who were born at Ft. Lewis. ;)
good morning, afternoon or evening (depending you your location!) Thank you to all military who are out there as well.
Oh, we lived at McChord right next to the freeway for a year or so.
morning mcurls
Do we have bumpers anymore? You could ride inside pini.
Actually, it as McCord, because dad was USAF - went to school in Ft Lewis
*was*]
oh, gosh, thx stid! :) (noting the movement up in the world)
Morning, all (for the next 15 minutes for me)
<-- was born in a military hospital (as were my children)
Must focus, focus on grid. My son was born at the hospital at Sumter, SC the AF base. It was pretty old. The corridors were just boarded without insulation. I felt as if we were in a time portal to WWII.
My girls were born at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego...one of the older buildings that aren't there anymore.
I know a lot of the military hospitals are trying to update their facilities, and I know that many need it badly
very much so, java!
hi all! can anybody clue the U for NBT?
From some standpoints the sprawling hospital setup probably prevented the spread of infections better than the air conditioning ducts that must be filled with air born junk.

un + AT **** (opp of "Attention!")

Hello, back from weekend in London and tired!
wb ruby
hi all
hi jmc
hello pini, hello jmc
here is hoping my internet last more than 2 minutes this time
you enjoy your hotel room ruby?
uh oh jmc...someting wrong? or travelling?
the hotel was awful, but the parties were great!
hello, folks -
hi jbv
hi jbv
ruby and une, this grid is for you - lots of french words - but don't bother trying prix, peur, feux, rien, pneu, etc.
hi Pini
hah hah jbv, I only see one (and its plural), still sleepy
oh, and another
il y en a beaucoup
it's too funny that you see them right away. How good is your French?
po6/24?
yes, that one I have and ru4/5
a cajun white rapper is a po6/24
raofl
ruby, I majored in French, studied it for 8 years (HS and college) and did very well on my trips there in my wild youth - now, however, let's say I will need a major refresher
cajun white rapper, eh?
I took a detour into Spanish which is now more or less my second language
I had a lot of it in school, but living here was what I needed to be fluent and, more important, to understand
I could never learn Spanish, the moment I would stop translating, I would get the French word
do you find people there want to speak English with you?
non!
being conversational in American Sign Language doesn't help me with the grid
oh, so they let you do all the work ! :)
me either jmc!
it's france jbv
but it's great when you're in traffic and you want to tell somebody off with the window closed
plus ca change - (I have to go look up the code for cedille)
I could do that before I learned ASL
(ps - still not getting the po6)
either ASL or you say "Can you read lips?" while pointing to your mouth!

any advice on poison ivy? apparently my son brought home a souvenir
here's a snippet...
Rub alcohol to the affected area, then rinse it with water and later wash with soap and water. Wet the infected area and rub plain table salt on it, this will not only relieve the victim but also stop further spread. Rub the inner side of a banana peel on the rash. This will help you to relieve itching. Place the infected area under running water. This will wash away histamines which cause itching of skin. Pour 3 cups of oats into warm water and soak the infected area into it. Simultaneously rub the affected area. Doing this will relieve you of itching. Mix 1/4 cup of bleach with 3/4 cup of warm water and apply to the affected area using a washcloth. This will kill the poison within 2 to 3 days. Apply aloe vera juice over the affected area, this will cool and provide instant relief.

I never understood why they say it to actors....
I think it will be OK, they seem to be into giving long orientations, so I need to remember no one expects me to really DO anything tonight at all, except show up in the appropriate clothing.

went for a drve on the mtn and we found this great little valley down this old unused dirt road that they close in the winter time we stopped at this bend in the road and out of this tree filled valley rose the roof line of a old grist mill and this fast run ning river thing was all black with age and had a bit of a lean to the building and all the trees and brush had grown right up over it almost hiding it from view.wife and i hacked our way dow the hill and into this little clearing right by the mill and got some great shots of the out building all covered in ivy and a tree growing right up through the roof and a pic of the old water wheel frozen motionless with disuse and the little stream churning its way around it..was amazing..if the pics turn out well ill make a photo bucket site.we could not gain entry to the old mill itself as the tangle of growth was too heavy but got a astounding shot of all the wildflowers amost covering the windowless frames that peeked out of the foilage

oooh, crossy...I like your clue better!
the end of the term at school can be a real cr6/30 time
for the wedding, talk to her physician and get his expert opinion. changes in location are very disorienting and can be quite upsetting for elderly people who are not struggling as she is.
thanks for the CR 6
everyone is against it but the BIL but he and I haven't been on good terms since I saw him dancing with his second wife before he had gotten shuck of his first wife and right after my hubby died
i thought the wrong brother died
for the "visit" bit, I suggest asking the staff where she is what her "best" time of day is, and stopping by in the middle of "errands" for a brief visit -- that will give her something to interest her when she is best able to interact, and get you off the hook for leaving quickly if it's difficult.
*tin halo falls*
jmc, I can see how you would have felt that way.
* readjusts jmc's golden halo *
*polishes up halo and puts it back*

Dim sum is a type of Chinese dish that involves small individual portions of food, usually served in a small steamer basket or on a small plate.
Oh sorry Pinik, I know dim sum, My last BF was Chinese, I just wanted to know if people were serving.

I need strength to stay awake, this schedule is going to be interesting, but I will appreciate the extra cash....
so how long are you going to be working nights? or is it a swing schedule?
I will be working it for a long time, but...Once I get into the swing of it it will not be near as tiring, that first day is always odd...
I would imagine
but a night shift not swing?
We dont really have a swing shift. we have midshift, and night and day.
well maybe we are nnot using the same vocabulary.
good. . . .all studies show switching sifts to be bad
a swing shift means some days you work days and some days you work nights
oh the dictionary defines it as a shift 4-12.
No no, no switching shifts, I refuse to do it. Night shift is actually very bad for health, so I hope to only do it for one year.
Coming in late here, Red, but what sort of work?

hi, babblers!
hi, welki
hi welki
maybe, jellen...I'm surfing the net with the chog window open...nothing much happening on a monday night before a work day...and Koda's asleep...so no conversation there...
hello everyone -- home from Alberta :)
I'm playing poker...getting my seat handed to me...
Hi, nan
were you here in calgary???
hi nan ;)
Hello cybernan! How are you doing? Welcome to grid!
Congratulations mkg on your fireworks! Good for you
yes -- 4 days in Lethbridge and 4 days in Calgary (have kids in both cities)
awwww nan, would have liked to meet you for coffee ... always nice to put a face to a name. maybe next time :)
ok -- we get over there 2 or 3 times a year
what part of Calgary are you in ? -- kids live in Silver Springs
it's hard to pull yourself away from the kids (and grandkids) ... i know how difficult it is for me. i'm in the deep south east
lol -- wouldn't you know -- opposite ends!
Good evening all. How are you all doing tonight?
Hi, Nef!
hi nef
it's not that far, nan. i can always head north :)
The grid is my one accomplishment of the day!
'evening, nef
is your pottery featured anywhere on okanaganpotters, nan?
Hello Nef!How are you doing?Welcome to the chat log
not anymore, welki -- I retired from pottery 10 years ago -- am a life member of the group though and do the webpage for them.
well, then your pieces must now be collectors' items!
Hi Jellen, Pini and welki Min, and Nan. I was here this AM but still have 70 words left to find
hi min
and nef
it
it's not too bad nef -- been at it for about 1/2 hour and have 37 to go
but you're fast and focused, nan; I'm plodding and distracted lately. :-)
Let's hear it for the distracted among us!
huh? oh sorry, was distracted :)
lol, welki
LOL! I love you guys! :-D
i'm done, so can clue for a little bit if anyone needs a hand
Did I say hooray for you yet?
please clue for that lone U. I still don't have NBT thanks to that U
please, no hoorays. send money instead
un + take it ***y, an eagles song with a vowel instead of the y
Anyone handing out money can send it here too! <jumping up and down waving arms wildly>
Um, hooray?
Thank you welki; I'll send you a hug!
i just read your new profile, nef. i should be sending you one .. a BIG one
thanks, welki. It's been rough. I miss him terribly (he was still the main (gourmet!) cook around here.
horrible, insidious disease. i hate it. my manager at work has m.s. and is now pregnant.
pregnancy can often cause a remission. How's she doing?
ups and downs, an understandably high risk pregnancy ... but we're all hoping for the best ... and expecting the best, too. she deserves it
I'll add her my prayer list.
(that was *to* my prayer list)
i'm sure that you know that the worst part is not knowing what's ms related and what's not ... puts a whole new spin on the most benign ailments
thanks, nef :)
'course she's waiting to see how dr. zamboni's patients do down the line ... was tempted to try the therapy, but it's soooo new
since I updated my profile, Frank's fallen 2 more times this week: once at the TCU and yesterday here at home (he was out on a pass; hit his head pretty bad but didn't tell *me* -- he told the nurse once we got back to the center
dr. Zamboni? Haven't heard of him yet
hehehe, that's such a stereotypical man thing, isn't it! (yes, he thinks that ms is a vascular condition, related to a build up of iron in blood vessels at the base of the brain
he performed experimental surgery on his wife which resulted in some remarkable results ... BUT .. like every new treatment/therapy, even those that are well publicized and seem viable, there is risk in new procedures (and lack of long term study)
(okay, just Googled him already. I've heard of this procedure and theory, but haven't seen research results about it
you working tomorrow, nef?
nope. My hours were cut at work (non-profits have no $$ here right now) I'm actually off all week.
i am. so i have to sign off and get some things done before this ol' broad calls it a night. you take care ... if i send that hug right now, you should have it by the time you read this :)
you take care too, welki. Give your boss a hug from me too
en 5, please?
en + use your inside ***ce, please
sorry Nan; I don't have it yet
ty jellen -- always seem to miss that one

I was Froot Loops, the toucan, for Halloween one year
My favorite super-sweet cereal
the second to 5/10 please
add a vowel to the to 4
which to 4 Jellen?
immediately before it
May I please have a clue for fe5-16 the 1st? Thanks
thanks Jellen, got it, 8 left
fe 5 rhymes with te 5/10
te5-10?
te 5/10 is like a big brother picking on a little sister...
OR what 60's hairstylists did to lift hair
there is no te5,10 in this puzzle
Oops!
Sorry! Um, it rhymes with pe 5/12, too
that's okay - thanks for the other two clues :)
lickety is missing 2?
Thanks y'all that was the last word....see you at the flip.
yay, peach!!!
No, I don't think so, aslindy
YAY, peach! WTG!!!
hm, my lickety shows 111 but my word list only has 109
That's weird...I have 111 on both...
never mind, got itnow
yes, 111
somehow I had 2 in lickety that weren't in my word list
Yay, aslindy!!!
and I've no idea how that happens
anyway, it's all good now
ti 5/10 pls? the monkeys are very tired....
siron
the first two are plurals, the last adds a vowel to the 4 above it
oh my, I should have seen that one. ty Jellen.

Yay, fuzzy!!!
YAY bunny!!!
ty stid and jellen. two in a row for me, feels kinda good.
YAy, fuzzy! WTG!!!
hi Nef, hope your husband is feeling better today. I hope he gets to come home soon.
wait. Nef husband? *worried mama look* oh Nef!
I just read your profile. Oh Nef... *sad mama look*
Thanks, fuzzy and stid. It's been rough; I'm having trouble sometimes
Is there anything I can do to help, Nef? I have finished the required assignments for this week -- not a lot on my plate at the moment.
(I just had my head buried in the grid; sorry I missed you earlier
It's okay Nef -- the grid is mostly friendly today -- not a lot of peculiar words
I'm just asking for healing thoughts and prayers, stid. he's fallen twice more since I wrote that; he was home yesterday on a pass and hit his head on a fall here
oh dear. Well, you and he are certainly going to be on my priority list.
Nef, I will keep you and your husband in my thoughts.
thanks. I really appreciate it
Is he in pain? I know it's awful to be away from home...
I will too, Nef...
would you like any clues before I go to bed?
he's not in pain, stid (except his head today). He really has no feeling from his waist on down right now. He doesn't know where his feet are unless he looks at them
that's good that he's not in pain, sorry about the not feeling the lower extremities. I hope that gets sorted out somehow.
me too, stid. I just want him home again. My sister started talking about long tern care/assisted living; and I'm SO not ready to even think about it.
I can tell people here about it and get support; but my own siblings are being so negative
I understand, Nef. What options do you have for in-home help?
People who are not "in the middle" of situations often don't grasp the extent until things reach a crisis point. (We are in the middle of something similar in my family)
Well, my hours for work have been drastically cut (no money for the non-profits here right now); so it's sort of me I guess. I could quit work too.
And sometimes when we are in the middle we are so busy treading water that we have trouble taking the long view.
How would you support yourself if you left work? AND how would you get the very necessary "time out" that all caregivers need?
And then there are people who are just full of negative info no matter what is going on too
I don't know, stid
That is true (permanent negativity)... and hard to avoid them.
:-(
Are there senior services ombudsmen who could help you find resources?
hello everybody
yeah. This same sibling once told my then 19 year old son he couldn't come to their state! That they didn't need any gang-bangers there! (he'd gotten arrested with some pot)
gee whiz, Nef. way to be supportive of a typical adolescent mistake. >:-(
Having pot makes you a gang-banger now?
good point, stid. I should start checking into that
well, I finally got a refill of my sleeping medication, need to take some so I can get a full night's sleep (the nightmares this weekend were awful) -- I am just so anxious about "everything" right now.
he's 31 now; but he will never forgive her for that (and I don't blame him either)
