You've lived there for ages, loads of memories etc, and the cliffs have been the subject of good coastal defences. Now, the government says they aren't going to maintain the defences any more and in a few years, your beloved house will get swept over the cliff. Boom.

Yes to compensation - probably relocation. When I bought the house they did not tell me they were going to stop
ah, there's the crux. The govt *never* promise for ever more, but most people *assume* the defences will always be there
but also sea can eat away at cliffs so quickly that you could inherit a house 10 miles from the sea and have it nearly in the water now
I don't think I would ever assume anything. In a sense, if you choose to stay somewhere where there is a risk, however remote, I think you have to accept some of the pitfalls. But I would expect some help, especially if I'd been there a long time.

so .. one would naturally expect some help, you'd hope ... but then - if you got your way and managed to persuade the government to keep on with the defences, would you expect the people along the shore that those sea defences would affect to be compensated too (generally flood defences screw up places downshore from them - people might be flooded there, have their own houses fall off cliffs)

we live on a tiny, old fault line, they occasional have 2.0 or 3.0 earthquakes, but nothing much

we have similar here - upmarket coastal area - houses getting closer and closer to the beach - one very high tide and lots of damage done - who is responsible ??
they are saying our local beach will be gone in 10 years if they don't do anything...at least we are in a bay

I suppose I'd go for the general good - what's best for the coast and what will make most people reasonably happy about the security of their homes. Unfortunately it looks as though some might have to make the sacrifice in order to secure the homes of the majority.
it really is an awful problem, and one where people and the coastline are in direct opposition - which is quite rare, usually there's some compromise that can work

anie, take 2 extra strength tylenol (or 3 regular strength) every 6 hours while awake (3 times daily) take it scheduled, ot as needed, scheduled just like a BP med, for the next 4-5 days. That will be your basal pain control
then if you eed additional, you can take alleve twice daily as well, but I suspect after a day of the tylenol dosed on a scheduled basis, you will not need much alleve
make sure you take the alleve with food, and do not take it the lay down

We're not allowed to have fireworks here, special licence required, but somehow they get smuggled in from down south.

in iowa it's always 2 days before Halloween

I am traditional like you Cos. Plus, I went to Catholic school and the next day is a holy day of obligation so we always had the day off. Now they make the kids go to school on holy days and trot them to mass during school hours.
