jilli, the family room of my paren't house is done in old barn siding. There was a tornado about when my dad was building our house. He passed a barn that was flattened in the storm. Offered to haul away some of the debris, including the siding and a hand-hewn beam that became the mantlepiece of the fire place. And that's my experience with barns. :)

what I liked about the barn siding is that we could be casual about putting a nail in to hang things up. My folks weren't collectors, but if they happened on something interesting and rustic, up it would go: cowbells, cabbage slicers, copper pots, etc.

use ultrapure liquid paraffin. just fill the lamp partway, let the wick sit in the oil a minute, and light. keep the wick pulled down so only a little sticks out of the holder -- the farther it sticks out, the larger the flame and the more smoky

the best part about books on cds is that the kids can load the cds on to their ipods, or we burn our own copies of the book, and then we return the cds and can then listen to the books over and over

I guess, if she was in a car, she shoul now put the leash on before opening the door. If she walked dog there, he should have been on a leash (we call it on a lead in UK, btw) anyway.
