oh my gosh...firefighters let a house burn down because the guy didn't pay a $75 fee that would have allowed them to service his house which was outside their service area, but the protected the house next door because they paid the fee...wow

What I don't understand is why didn't the rural area have a volunteer fire department? It's a complicated issue. The city can't afford to support a service for the rural area that doesn't pay taxes, which is a common thing. So there are volunteer fire depts in lots of small towns. Also the city said they sent both written reminders and called and spoke with the people to pay their bill. It's horrible and sad but fire departments are incredibly expensive to maintain.
fee paying should not have anything to do with fire protection... most of our fire fighters are volunteers
we have a volunteer fire department -- wonderful people.
That's what I'm getting at Uni -- they don't want taxes, but taxes pay for civilization, and that includes fire protection. (Sorry to write a novel!)

I used to live in a small town in Kansas and this was a constant tension. People esp. in rural areas despise taxes but they also demand the same services/protections. Something has to give.

just read a blog where a guy said the home owner lived in a different county than the fire dept -- his county didn't have a fire dept, which is why they were requiring a yearly subscription
I wonder if the neighbors will take up a collection for them
Yeah, and the fire dept.'s point was that if they put out his fire, no one in the county would have incentive to pay -- and the service would go bankrupt for everyone. All to avoid a 13 cent tax! I just don't understand that mentality.

I have such a horror of a fire -- my family photos and other sentimental items are really important to me
with so many cities near bankruptcy I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't happen in more places

a wonderful thing happened here recently -- we had a terrible flood in May -- most destructive ever in Nashville
our friends had to pay for their street light and that was years ago..and they were robbed twice

jhb, my old friend is not in good shape. Our late hubbies worked together a long time ago. I hadn't seen her in about 20 years, although we kept in touch. A couple of years ago she had a stroke and now needs a walker and a wheel chair, and is quite frail. She came with her sister and another (much younger) friend whose late hubby also worked with ours, but I didn't know her before. She is a wonderful person, great personality, and knockout good looks -- the figure of a 25-year-old although she is 66. She was the "tour guide" and looked after my old friend so carefully.

West, this delight took place on Monday night. They were here from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon and I was driving them around the island a lot of the time -- hence not here much!

From my tattered and torn Betty Crocker cookbook: 1 large egg, 1 cup white or wheat flour, 3/4 cup milk, 1 Tbl white or brown sugar, 2 Tbl vegetable oil, 3 tsp baking power, 1/4 tsp salt. Beat egg until fluffy. Beat in remaining ingredients. Pour slighly less than 1/4 cup batter onto greased griddle.
And for a crepe maker, it will be REALLY easy. I've never had the courage to even try crepes!

i have heard several times that no matter how adept you are at making crepes, the first one always goes in the trash...
But of course it is, Ruby! :o) Gosh, French always sounds SO much better than English...
I don't measure for my crepes, just beat and egg with some milk add in flour until it's not lumpy and some veg oil and cook in butter in a tiny non-stick frying pan
not if you're the cook! That's the cook's prize, just sprinkle with a little sugar and add a pat of butter
one egg, 1/2 cup milk/ 1/3 cup flour, 1 TBS oil, pinch of salt but I'll look it up in a cookbook for tomorrow, buffgirl
I think that's what I do; batter should be very thin
and you can make them ahead, separating them with waxed paper. Then re-heat in butter (of course), sprinkle with sugar and orange juice then pour on the grand marnier and set it on fire!
