I think and feel that if her own parents would be willing to speak up that is pretty damning as most parents would do anything to protect their kid
just from what the lawyer says, molly. although it is early yet so who knows? what I would like is for the charges to be dropped against him (and ideally brought against her although I care less about that). But if the DA wants to try the case, and he risks going to jail if he loses (because the arresting officers will almost certainly make statements that support what they did), but offers an option where he could plead guilty to a lesser charge, serve no jail time, and have his record cleared after 2-3 years of supervision - that would be a tough choice.
Hopefully it will not come to that.
and I am sure her parents will not testify against her at this point although again one never knows.

no, annie, her parents have no health insurance and she has never been treated (saw a counselor for a little while but those conversations are privileged)

Well the reason I asked is that I know someone who was in a similar situation as Sue's son and he got an attorney to represent him for a package price. It was a misdemeanor offense though. He was a great attorney too.
and we're a small town; I'm a full professor with tenure at the local university so no chance of skipping out on the bill. But because it is a small town it isn't as expensive as it might be.

Sue, sounds like your lawyer's charges are pretty reasonable, especially billing out his clerk time at a discount. One of my pals jokes that he ought to bill out his clerks at double rate, given that they need so much of his supervision time! Of course, you can't bill for that...

In the US, there is a serious oversupply of lawyers. Law schools graduate 45,000 new ones every year, but according to Bureau of Labor statistics, there are only 32,000 new lawyer jobs created per year. Hence the high unemployment rate of the new grads.
3 of which are not taking clients... 5 of which will not do legal aid... and 7 of the 8 will not get involved if children's aid is involved in any way
so...if u want out...u pay...my lawyer charges 550/ hour and that mid range...lowest is 475..highest is 850
Seems like a market failure to me. Like I said, I have top students with practice experience that can't get legal work right now.

Unfortunately, it isn't that easy. Our law school is considering a joint degree program with a Canadian law school to allow graduates to practice both in the US and Canada. But it's been complicated trying to work out the accreditation issues. And Canadian law schools are fewer and smaller than their American counterparts, so they aren't enthusiastic about agreeing to American lawyers practicing in Canada
at least I don't have to water the planters.

In the US, the police can lie about the evidence and make up stuff. There's a case where a 14 year old kid was grilled for hours, told that the victim was clutching a strand of his hair (a lie) and that her blood was on his clothing (another lie). Then that he probably was suppressing the memory of the killing from his conscious mind because he was ashamed. The kid ultimately confessed to what the police wanted. Luckily for him, his lawyer insisted on getting the DNA tested, and he was cleared.

a rare and expensive Malbec from Argentina.. maybe..like Cobos or Bramare, but jeez on it's own it is blocky and not flavorful
