I looked at some photos from out 'quake in 1995, very little damage, considering it was near a large city. I have one photo with a wall sheared away, three stories of kitchens, with refrigerators and stoves just sitting ther, undisturbed.

Portland, ME is where I would move, if I had my choice of other places to live. I love it here, but I think I would also love it there.

I lived on the 20th floor in Miami, but that was before 9/11
I was on the 4th floor of a beach front hotel during a wind storm once. You could feel the building shaking. I can't imagine what it's like higher than that.
in our windstorm on Sat night, our whole house was shaking and groaning and we're built into a hillside

yes most of NJ evacuated but the Mayor of Atlantic City told people they could stay in shelters and one is only 1 block from the bay. not good. cause the rescuers cannot go get them now

I used to live in East Haven right on the beach - glad I'm not there now!
Things seem a bit less windy now but it is still raining. Lost power but only for an hour or so.
wow! sue. There are people in East Haven who didn't evacuate and are stuck in flooded homes. They're told to go to the top floor of their houses
pretty dumb. I was a graduate student at the time; the house was cheap to rent because it was a summer house and we were living in it in the winter, but I never would have stayed through something like this.

I've heard they are being pretty tough on people who refused to evacuate.
We were pretty lucky so far. But that doesn't mean it can't go out again.
Maybe they don't evacuate because they are trying to win a Darwin award.
well, it really puts the first responders in danger when they have to go pull people out of situations that they shouldn't have let themselves get into in the first place
