kate, my kids are 27 and 30 and I found the 1983 immunization schedule to be easy to do and easy on the child too. I think (but will verify for sure) that there is 1 peds. visit that the baby is supposed to get 5 vaccines at one. That is absolutely frightening to me!

I think another problem is that most parents these days have not seen the after effects of Polio, or Measles/Mumps...so its hard for them to imagine their kid getting it. I mean the risk of Polio in the US seems so remote...

I think we are a little confused about exactly what Obamas plan is but I think it involves keeping your present insurance if you like it, but I think a lot of employers will immediately stop covering health insurance if there is a gov. option.

Owl it depends on what kind of "elective" surgery it is. If it is causing a lot of pain and interfereing with your life, then you go up the list faster. When I wanted to have kids and needed my tubes blown open, I got bumped a couple of times but I still got the surgery and 2 healthy boys.

myh dad survives on ss pays 8K to live in a hovel family home with $30K in the bank t guve him paltry interest. he makes TOO MUCH to get any kind of help - not govt cell phone, nor energy assitance to run a/c for his copd - NOTHING. man worked all his life and paid every bill he ever got in full INCLUDIN hispital bill for my aunt's long term care. IN FULL. NO HELP.

It was begun here in Canada by a guy whose child was born with a heart condition. His father was a politician who could afford the surgury so his child would live. In the next bed was another kid with the same condition whose parents could not afford it. They knew that child would die.
One other problem we have is that there are many free options for health care, but navigating them are very difficult, and many people do not understand or dont have the resources to get the appointments....
all i can say is i hope you all save well for your retirement you will need it. the term poor is very relative

I'm Nurse Manager of a prenatal clinic in a pregnancy resource center. We deal with the working poor mostly; and it's just so upsetting to see young people who have to let their own health go because they can't afford care.

I tried working as a triage nurse for an insurance company for almost a year. I was so disillusioned by what we (as nurses were expected to do: it wasn't "help the caller" it was push the products!
I had to tell an 82 year old man with Parkinsons' in Idaho that his nearest provider was 70 miles away! The docs in the towns near him weren't covered by his insurance; Medicare would pay for some of his care if he was hospitalized; but he'd have to pay out of pocket for the rest! AND, telling a Parkinsons' patient to drive 70 miles? Forget that!

Nef, a bunch of us followed cheetah through her whelping of her pups. we became quite attached to the little furballs. and now we're following them into their adult lives.
we will make sure cuddlebug is spayed and has some basic obedience discipline work before we adopt her out again
i think the spaying is going to help some of her skittishness.

That herding behavior is really hard on some kids. My sister had a dog that herded and her kids tolerated it; but my kids hated it when we would visit
